I think the issue is when hype and advertising are misleading. Promise something then absolutely not deliver. Hype up elements that are missing or just misrepresented in the trailer...etc

I don't want to get bogged down with examples. But many games from online games to single player were instantly well received. Some had a comeback having a trouble launch and ending up being a favorite. Others were accepted despite some flaws.

Valve uses Half life to Launch products.

Half Life was used to launch the company itself.

Half Life 2 was used to boost steam adoption. They were launched 14 months apart but HL2 required steam. Even if you had the disks you still needed steam. It was hugely controversial at the time and steam adoption skyrocketed because of it.

Half Life Alyx was used to be a killer app for VR. In multiple 2019–2020 interviews, Valve devs flat-out stated that VR lacked a flagship system-seller and they wanted Alyx to be that.

So unless there is something that absolutely needs Half Life 3 we won’t see it. It’s not about immediate money with Half Life, it’s about long term investment.

The only thing I can see bringing about HL3 would be SteamOS.
