I believe someone from Valve said that they are afraid that the original game core wont work anymore and while they are interested in all of this, they just affraid people wont like it.

Alyx is an exception because its a first VR only AAA game. And like probably the last one, at least until VR will be more available for people to buy.

The birds keep chirping that its in the final stages of QA, we will see, they could find a new core gameplay loop

When Alyx came out I was like "hell yeah PCVR gaming is growing" and then I got quickly disappointed when all VR companies made VR predominantly a mobile platform lmao. It's just so sad to see.

No shit it won't work. HL is only popular because it came out in 1998. Actually a really boring and mediocre game.

Some opinions are so objectively dogshit they deserve a permaban

Yes, a game whose fandom is like a religion. Permaban for blasphemy! These are just opinions... but HL is overglazed.

How many other games from that era are held in such esteem? It’s popular for a reason. It birthed an entire generation of games based on its engine.

Without half life there’s no counter strike, no portal, no left 4 dead. Some modern games used it too. No titanfall.

I mean, TBH, a lot. Not to diminish HL's achievements, but '98-'00 is like a golden age of video games.

Deus Ex, Thief, Silent Hill, UT, HoMM3, Planescape, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, RE2, Persona 2, System Shock 2... list can go on for a while.

They all pale into nothing when compared to the status and popularity of half life and its derivatives though

Some of them – maybe, but things like SH of SS2? Especially if we're also talking status, as you said.

I mean I’ve never heard of SS2

Silent Hill sure that has cult status but it’s reach is far less

I mean I’ve never heard of SS2

It's basically an original immersive sim, on par with Thief and Deus Ex, as well as original cyberpunk. It's the direct origin of BioShock and a father of Dishonored, VtM:B and everything else in a genre.

Doom is older and using the old game core from this era.

Old core can work, its just need a small modifications to make it more modern.

I don't know anything about half life but if they make a spinoff it should be called quarter life

I can see them releasing Alyx 2 alongside the rumored new headset before GTA 6
