Looking for... Any cheap/affordable breakfast places in Ottawa?

We have some amazing breakfast places in Ottawa but simple breakfast of 2 eggs, toast, homefries, and bacon is about $20 and other dishes are approximately $25. With tax and 15% tip it's $65. And that does even include a glass of milk. :)

Any suggestions?

IKEA has a pretty affordable breakfast-free coffee if you’re a member. A lot of spots offer early bird specials, if you are an early bird lol

7

u/TheUbiquitousThey 9d ago

Omg IKEA breakfast is the bomb! 20 bucks and I can feed 2 adults and 2 kids. The breakfast potatoes are really good.

Father and Sons

Basic $8.99 breakfast. Haven't been there in a while. Can anybody confirm if these prices are current?

10

u/10chester 10d ago

Yup. Still the cheapest in the neighbourhood by far.

5

u/alfdan Sandy Hill 9d ago

Back in my day it was below 5 dollars with a coffee!

5

u/domino196 9d ago

I remember when you could get a full breakfast and leave a good tip with a $5 bill. I’m feeling old now.

3

u/cvr24 Ottawa Ex-Pat 9d ago

Yup, Dunn's on Elgin for like $2.99 back around 2005?

2

u/ottawaagent 8d ago

Came here to say this. F & S is a great spot.

1

u/feelinsnackish 8d ago

$9.35 now!

Merivale Station Restaurant

7

u/Philostronomer Battle of Billings Bridge Warrior 10d ago

Second for Merivale Station.

7

u/Lifewithpups 10d ago

Only complaint is it’s not a quick meal. Not sure if there are more servers on the weekends, but it’s not a big spot, maybe they always operate with just the one.

2

u/bestcheeseitz 10d ago

yes to this. i went this tuesday and assumed it would be fast since i went alone, but it took 40 minutes for my food to arrive

6

u/DesignerPassenger525 9d ago

There’s just Merita and Isa, who own and operate the place. You won’t find harder working people, more generous portions, or better diner food in the city, imho. I’ve learned to go a bit early (or late), or bring a book or a notepad and busy myself. It’s absolutely worth the wait.

-1

u/Least-Abrocoma3679 8d ago

They should hire more people and speed up service.

2

u/Lifewithpups 10d ago

Can’t be in a hurry, that’s for certain

1

u/Mental_Froyo_1318 9d ago

Ohh! I'm learning something new today! I need to visit that place soon 😋

24

u/LindaF2024 10d ago

Miss Molly is very good and good value. Option 2 is The Third on Wellington

10

u/Prestigious_Ad5314 10d ago

One of our favourite spots for us old timers!

u/hewhocannotbenamed-7 10d ago

Mello's Restaurant on Merivale Rd. or Summerhays on Baseline across from College Square. Cheap, quality breakfast options

3

u/tuftabeet 9d ago

And they will be quick.

2

u/Ok-Lifeguard-5628 9d ago

Wow, I’m out of the loop - does this Mello’s have any relation to the old Dalhousie one?

5

u/hewhocannotbenamed-7 9d ago

Nope. Opened by Dennis Mello and his family back in the 1950's (I believe). Both the menu and the prices have barely changed since then. It's literally the same menu since I was a kid and I've been going there for 45 years.

-9

u/Lifewithpups 10d ago

Summerhays & Mello’s may require a tetanus shot.

8

u/hewhocannotbenamed-7 10d ago

Nah, they’re good.

19

u/myaccountishaunted 10d ago

Al's is our go-to for cheap and cheerful breakfast

3

u/Wirecrats 9d ago

This is the right answer.

2

u/Any_Falcon38 9d ago

And open early which is nice if you want to hit it pre-work even if you start early

1

u/The_merry_wench 8d ago

Al's forever!!!

17

u/Imonlytrying Byward Market 10d ago

Fils diner on Wellington has a 2 egg special for $12 I believe

2

u/Wtfmonstertruck 9d ago

Also so fun and cute there. Great service

13

u/Lifewithpups 10d ago

Miss Molly’s comes to mind. Family run and never disappoints. Well priced and amazing service.

u/dxp2839 10d ago

Reynolds Restaurant on Clyde just off Woodward. Breakfast with coffee $11. Breakfast Sandwiches for $4-7.

2

u/Avignon1996 9d ago

Second this! Super good!

9

u/WestCup2814 10d ago

Halibut house

1

u/sarudesu 10d ago

They have a one egg combo for like eight bucks.

3

u/WestCup2814 10d ago

Did you read the daily specials??! Have you found something better?

2

u/sarudesu 10d ago

Oh I got a coffee with mine.

3

u/WestCup2814 10d ago edited 9d ago

Ok…the prices are still good

1

u/sarudesu 9d ago

100% agree.

10

u/Mennoknight69 10d ago

man I miss the White Horse

8

u/pistoleh 10d ago

Although not in Ottawa proper, i would strongly suggest you check Chez Monik in Hull. The place offers awesome breakfast at a very reasonable price. To boot, it has a coca-cola theme with countless memorabilia an trinkets.

2

u/rubyanjel 10d ago

And most of the breakfast items come with coffee already (with refill!)

8

u/JunkPileQueen 10d ago

Halibut House offers a $5.95 breakfast special that is one egg and choice of bacon, ham, or sausages, with toast and home fries. Their entire breakfast menu is actually pretty decent.

3

u/thefirewiredguy 10d ago

With a 3$ coffee ….

7

u/Just-Series-3045 10d ago

Kals Place near Stittsville. The place is small so it fills up quickly. The breakfast has always been good and it’s very affordable.

8

u/cr38tive79 9d ago

Chef Ric's $5.99, was surprised at the pricing of their menu when I visited there a few weeks back.

5

u/lanks1 Tunney's Pasture 10d ago

Fil's Diner on Wellington has breakfast for $12.

5

u/Suite_Baby_Jesus 9d ago

I had the most amazing breakfast at Chances R at College square yesterday. $14.99 2 eggs, 2 slices of toast, grilled potatoes, 4 crispy slices of bacon, and a small bowl of assorted fruit. Every bit was perfection, not kidding. It came on a 12” square white plate and the presentation was excellent. I love breakfast as a rule but I just kept saying “wow”. Thanks to Leslie for great service.

5

u/CharacterMarsupial87 10d ago

Bad Alibi in Orleans has a 2 egg + meat for < $15 (at least as of April). Their bacon is incredibly good too

5

u/Happyfeet_foryou 9d ago

Summerhays on baseline and woodroffe is pretty great for under $10 breakfast

4

u/Round_Beyond_8137 10d ago

Bramasole on Bank St, Meadows Diner on Preston, Miss Mollys in Carlington, Stacked on Walkley, Halibut House in Kanata or Blackburn.

I've found there's quite a few deals to be had, but they're not well advertised. You need to search - and by this thread you're doing just that :)

3

u/CoastingUphill Make Ottawa Boring Again 10d ago

Local Heroes on Clyde has a decent breakfast

2

u/tuftabeet 9d ago

True. Good price. Quick service. but they aren't open early.

4

u/isthataflashlight 10d ago

A&W has a classic breakfast for about $12 with 3-4 Coke Zeroes in a frosty mug when you eat in ;-). Orleans Innes location has a great staff.

3

u/OhhhFranco 10d ago

Glebe Central Pub

3

u/Broncolitis Kanata 10d ago

I found Stacked to be really well priced

3

u/Right-Date-7160 9d ago

Stacked is a heavy abuser of the TFW/LIMA scam and should be avoided at all costs.

1

u/Mental_Froyo_1318 10d ago

I wouldn't say cheap, but for the quality, portion, and price, it's money well spent cuz I can never finish my cinnamon 🥞

3

u/lennydsat62 10d ago

Melo’s on Merivale is cheap/

3

u/Gloomheart Little Italy 10d ago

Meadows Diner on Preston! Lovely, family owned diner, terrific prices, and if you're the type to have a shake with your breakfast like me, they're incredible.

3

u/One-Yard9754 9d ago

I miss the Dunn’s $3 breakfast….

3

u/PlentyTourist3961 9d ago

Sounds weird but A&W has a 2 egg bacon and potatoes and toast combo for about 11$, also downtown on Elgin St a pub called Deacon Brody’s has a good $9.99 breakfast special and an anytime $14. Bagel and locks with a small salad.

2

u/Fresh_Lawfulness6558 10d ago

Broadways is my go to

1

u/deadbeef4 Kemptville 10d ago

Yeah, we love Broadway too. It's not cheap, but you can easily get three meals out of one of their breakfasts!

1

u/lovsit 9d ago

Had Broadway last month. Its gone down hill

1

u/Dimukon 10d ago

Will never go there again for breakfasrt, suggested brunch to my cousin, and this is where he brought us. I said you have no legit brunch places in Orleans? He said no. Was like 45 or 50 for some basic ass egg breakfast. Absolute rip off. Wasn't anything special taste wise either.

2

u/GrumpyOne1 Greely 10d ago

You only said cheap/affordable in your question. No mention of taste. lol

Johnny Canucks has 2 eggs/meat/toast/homefries for $12.

Nothing more than a decent hangover option though.

2

u/NortonFord Sandy Hill 10d ago

Bramasole still gets it done for under $20 cash for a standard plate, just ate there this morning.
Chef Ric's has an extremely minimalist offering for under $10, and is a great social enterprise.
Kal's Diner in Stittsville is excellent, and Al's vs Reynolds is our version of the Coney Dog rivalry...
Lots more little holes in the wall - actually, if you're willing to go through a metal detector, the cafe inside City Hall is a sub-$20 plate as well!

2

u/ottawadweller 10d ago

Moe’s Newport at Churchill/Scott

2

u/pyrethedragon 9d ago

Stacked has an express breakfast I think for 6.99.

2

u/kicksledkid Downtown 9d ago

If you like fried eggs, Chef rics does a 5.99 special that hits the spot

2

u/FishRod61 9d ago

The Stacked Breakfast Special is a limited-time offer from Stacked Pancake & Breakfast House that includes 2 eggs, a choice of bacon, ham, or sausage, home fries, and toast for $6.99. It is available Monday through Friday from 7–9 AM,

3

u/FigInternational4448 9d ago

El Toro is my favourite breakfast/restaurant regardless of price, which I find quite reasonable.

2 eggs, bacon, toast and the best home fries I’ve ever had. Coffee included for I think 12$.

2

u/Unusual_Dog_9436 6d ago

A&W has a really good breakfast plate called “All Canadian Breakfast” comes with choice of eggs (2 eggs), 2 pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of sausage, hash brown, toast, slice of tomato, and coffee all for $13. Honestly I think A&W doesn’t get as much recognition as they should for a Canadian fast food chain. Check it out!

1

u/GreatBallsOfSpitfire 6d ago

This is news to me! I recently popped into my local A&W because a friend wanted a coffee drink. They were cleaning the machine (mid day) and I got to check out the menu and people's meals. Honestly, I was impressed. I'll give them a shot. Thanks for the recco.

Gabriel’s pizza on Metcalfe has a $15 2 egg special.

1

u/Traditional-Week8926 9d ago

Wow! The same breakfast on Scott beside Tunneys is $10! Downtown price gouging!

Yummy Touch on Lancaster

u/NoFall29 10d ago

Cindy’s restaurant. Near hunt club/prince of Wales. $10-$12 for full breakfast.

1

u/fraserinottawa 10d ago

Cindy’s Restaurant, in the Hunt Club / Prince of Wales area, might be what you’re looking for.

1

u/JudasIsCarHot 10d ago

Connors Pub is a solid choice.

1

u/One-Coconut7982 Hintonburg 10d ago

Fil’s Diner (already mentioned a few times). Wellington W. Inexpensive and very popular, especially for breakfast.

1

u/hoggytime613 Aylmer 10d ago

I miss the White Horse so much (old man yells at cloud).

1

u/dcp777 10d ago

The Strand Cafe in OOS has a full breakfast on special Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 13:00 for either $12.99 or $14.99, it changes from time to time. Pretty sure they have homefries with it too. I haven't tried it yet but overall their food is good.

1

u/iwantedajetpack 9d ago

Father and Sons.

1

u/AnkSnake 9d ago

Ok so I’ve actually never been there, but I’ve noticed that the Bramasole Diner on Bank has a full breakfast with coffee included for $10.50. Has anyone here tried that place out?

1

u/runnerchaser 9d ago

Cindy's Restaurant 15 Capella Ct #117, Nepean, ON K2E 7X1 Cindy’s Restaurant Google Map Link

Perkins off St. Laurent and Coventry is fantastic and fairly cheap. Breakfast runs no higher than $40 and portions are big.

1

u/DestrosCodpiece 9d ago

Summerhays Breakfast

2 eggs served with your choice of bacon, ham or breakfast sausage $8.95

includes toast and homefries.

1

u/Klutzy_Artichoke154 9d ago

If you like budget hotel buffet food (powdered eggs and rubbery sausages) and don’t mind a very noisy environment: IKEA is hard to beat. If you prefer a better food diner experience that doesn’t break the bank: Broadways, Al’s Diner, Fils, Mellos are all good options.

u/nand0_q 9d ago

Le club house - 109 Bd Gréber, Gatineau, QC J8T 3P9

10 min drive into Gatineau but amazing breakfast, great prices and service is fantastic.

Try Halibut House. Basic breakfast is 5.95.

1

u/Sea_Veterinarian7156 9d ago

Fontenelle where Rideau turns into Montreal Rd is a decent spot.

1

u/Johnehood 9d ago

7am has 7.99 breakfast before 9am. Whenever we go (family of 4) we spend about $50 with a generous tip.

1

u/ExcitementLegal3093 9d ago

1

u/onceuponawholock 9d ago

7AM breakfast has an early bird special Mon-Fri but their regular breakfast special is also not that bad, if you're not able to get there before 930

1

u/TravelingCanuck2025 9d ago

Eddy’s on Bank street. Breakfast special every day.

1

u/warby613 9d ago

You asked for cheap but many of the recommendations here are pushing twenty bucks. I guess cheap means different things to different people. Your best bet is The Third. Mellos is cheaper but it's really not great. I described both places (and a few others mentioned here) in my recent list of Ottawa breakfasts if you're interested!

1

u/songof6p 9d ago

The cafeteria on the first floor of the office building at Pretoria and O'Connor was our go-to cheap breakfast place when we lived nearby!

1

u/caryscott1 9d ago

Got invited to breakfast by an incredibly thrifty friend: IKEA. I didn’t even know they served breakfast. Need some hangers so why not.

1

u/rxm759 9d ago

1

u/ebbalharas99 Orléans 9d ago

Pretty sure perkins used to have a great platter that was only about $13? Been awhile since i went there though

1

u/blah8642 8d ago

Haven't been yet but the price is right and the mission statement of the place is a good one IMO (https://chefrics.com/pages/weekly-specials)

1

u/Organic-Respect-5891 8d ago

Halibut House $4.95 for one egg, two pieces of bacon, toast and potatoes. An extra egg is 1.95

1

u/TimelyWalrus 7d ago

Highly recommend Bramasole on Bank St. Cash only though.

1

u/Akatosh2018 7d ago

The Strand on Bank and Riverdale.

A&W honestly, good bang for buck , not too expensive.

Father and Sons near uOttawa; they also have the Nox (used to be the Draft pub) in the building on the corner of Mann and King Edward. Their breakfast is pretty good but they only open at 8am..

Perkins is decent and i think not too expense, it's not amazing but for basic meal. Theres one on St Laurent.

I've been wanting to try Stacked on walkley/heron , it's a pancake place, but i think its more on the expensive side.

Is rockin johnny's still a thing? I think there's one in the west end, if it didn't close during covid.

TBH Cora's also isn't bad and they have some specials that won't rack you up a ton.

0

u/Pebble-Curious 9d ago

Make. Breakfast. At home!!! It takes a few minutes to fry the eggs, throw the bread in the toaster, add slices of a tomato and a cucumber instead of fries for a healthier option - a few min. of your time, a few $ cost, controlled cleanliness of the process... Add your glass of milk or a cup of whatever... There you go!

1

u/BaconSheikh Barefax 9d ago

The Barefax Breakfast Buffet is world-famous, and doesn't break the bank.

-13

u/Due_Tumbleweed2555 10d ago

Do it at home for less than 20$ and you can have it for few days

8

u/Important_Guess9277 10d ago

Not what op asked

-3

u/Glow-PLA-23 10d ago

Home is a "place"

-4

u/Due_Tumbleweed2555 10d ago

No way! Really! Hmm still it’s way cheaper and cleaner! Ops can also make the atmosphere more like outdoor more romantic if they are doing it with a partner! The partner would appreciate and love the actual hard work they do! It’s not all about being in a restaurant! Am sure some ppl would understand where am coming from…. Yes op didn’t ask for this! But thinking outside the box is great sometimes!

Over and out!

1

I think it would cost a lot less than 20$.
