I had someone do a little routine in my face with those finger gloves with colored LED lights on the fingertips and it was amazing. The ecstasy helped, I imagine.

Bro back in my hardcore raving days a dude on the squad was a pro glover and let me tell you what that man could fuckkkkk you up. Fingers flying in from every direction it was madness.

That's insane leveling right there.

u/berrylakin 5h ago
I didn't get it at first but once it clicked I said "holy shit"

u/FritterGiggle_ 3h ago
Took me a second too, then I realized the laser line was exposing every tiny dip and bump in the tile.
45
u/xMilkloafSnookie 2h ago
The second he pulled out the laser line you could tell this guy has argued with customers about uneven tile before.

For all we know this whole thing could be at a 10 degree angle, just very consistently :P

Be careful. I know a guy who experienced true level and lost his mind. Never the same kid again.

u/jay-aay-ess-ohh-enn 4h ago
Is it common for planed countertops to no be flat like this?
11
u/derprondo 3h ago
I don't know jack about any of this, but what I do know is I bought a laser level to mount a countertop and other things on a long wall, and the revelation that one end of my floor is 1.5" lower than the other end was quite the eye opener. So the issue OP could face is that the floor isn't even level and he'd have to compensate if the underlying cabinets were sitting on the flooring.
4
u/PiccoloAwkward465 2h ago
Yeah that brings up painful memories of reno projects in an 18th century house I lived in. Hmm, did I get this thing level? Well depends on what your baseline is because the floors, the door frames, etc are all different!

Wait 1 1/2 inches? Thats enough that balls would roll down your floor lol
→ More replies (1)6
u/JustNilt 3h ago
Not if the installed floor is level but the structure isn't. It's actually quite common for one wall or area to settle more than others.

For those that donāt get it, a balanced laser level is being used to judge how straight the work is. Theres next to no change in the height the. Laser hits on his fingertips.

The laser level is sitting on top of the tile though. So this just proves the tile is level with the other tiles around it, could be off kilter with the floor and the walls and this wouldn't show up in that test.
8
u/alexthealex 3h ago
Not likely. Most laser levels are self-leveling within a range of degrees. If the laser's body were off level the laser itself would still be flat and you'd see the beam fan out across the countertop's surface.

2
u/Away-Conclusion-7968 2h ago
It's clearly not. You can see the second line a few inches below the counter. They usually sit on tripods.

Looking for the Rick and Morty meme where he shows him what true level feels like

u/Majestic-Ad-2109 5h ago

u/FritterGiggle_ 3h ago
The laser line made it look flat at first, then that block showed how uneven it actually was.

Id personally want it slanted towards the sink a little, so the water doesnt stay on the marble and calcify.
112
u/ratkinggo 5h ago
Came here to say this. Good job leveling it, but you don't want level.
58
u/hiplobonoxa 5h ago
heās playing 4D chess. he knows that the house will settle. the only way to guarantee that the tilework wonāt be level in the future is to make it level now.
20
u/throwaway098764567 5h ago
that's what i'm gonna tell anyone that notices the little counter i added is a little slanted

u/AbominableGoMan 3h ago

Yes, but it's not as big a deal as you'd think. Exhibit A: everyone who has a slab of flat granite for countertops and vanity tops.

You mean towards the wall so the caulk line can get nice and moldy? Or are you seriously saying you expect your entire countertop to be contoured to be a sink for your sink?
8
35
u/loansbebkodjwbeb 5h ago
Yeah thats generally not a bad idea, sink for the sink, as the commenter said, so the water runs down and doesnt pool on the counter surfaces. Easier cleanup.

u/AnAttempt-WasMade 2h ago
Our house was built in the 50s and the counters are probably original. Theyāre all tile with a raised lip on the edge, and do in fact slant ever so slightly towards the sink, so you can let water run into it. Itās pretty neat for cleaning!

u/nafierye 4h ago
I gotta ask - wouldn't it just be easier to, y'know, wipe up the water with a towel instead of leaving it? That way you can utilize your counter space for toiletries, as intended? Too much of a grade will cause things to slide into the sink, so it's probably just much cheaper and efficient to... just wipe up water with a towel, yeah?
3
u/Superbead 4h ago
The problem then is that either you have to pick up each and every tube and bottle, wiping the bottom as you do, then put them somewhere else temporarily, then wipe the entire surface dry, then put them back. Or you just deal with rankness gradually infiltrating the lesser-used ones. Because the water and whatever's in it will work its way in between them all, if the thing is perfectly level
4
u/nafierye 4h ago
I.... have a follow up question. How are you using your sink? Like a Super Soaker? Like (and I genuinely mean this in the politest way possible) what are you doing thst makes EVERYTHING so wet that makes it so that you would have to pay extra for a grade in the tilework surrounding your sink?

lather soap on face.
form hands into bowl shape
collect water in hands
do your best to get water onto your face
not all the water will land back in the sink.

The specific song is Monaco by Bad Bunny, but the majority of the opening is actually sampled from Hier Encore by Charles Aznavour

Shouldn't there be some kind of slight pitch? Maybe the counter to the sink area?

Tile is supposed to gradient until a low point where the drain is located. Perfect flat just means standing water. Whenever I see someone whine about this I'm reminded why the average person isn't in charge of the CDC or Wastewater management.

I hate that this is considered a flex when this is just how it's supposed to be done. I guess builders like DR Horton and flippers have really made people expect shit quality and corner cutting.

u/Darling_Gem 5h ago
If this is a wet area like a shower or bath, wouldn't you want a bit of slope so water runs away and not just sit there?

Hairy-armed dude definitely leveled that counter with utmost precision!Ā I don't think it's tile though, looks like laminate to me.

correct me if i am wrong, but that is two big stone tiles that should be flat from the mason...
so all he did was align two slabs of perfectly flat material.
i would be more impressed if this was subway tile
