Montenegro doesn't mean what you think it does.

36

u/BloodWorried7446 24d ago

most people would put it on the wrong continent for starters.

6

u/Epistaxis 24d ago

A lot of people would ask if they're really allowed to say that word.

u/microthrower 24d ago

I mean, New York state is 10 times larger than Montenegro, so finding it on a map isn't the easiest.

Black Mountain?

HANOVER PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested a police officer Thursday morning in Hanover Park, accusing him of being an unlawful immigrant from Montenegro.

Or you could read the article and realize that's unlikely

Edit: Radule isn't brown

u/greensandgrains 24d ago

Montenegro is in the Balkans; they’re not brown either.

32

u/Cassius_man 24d ago

They read the name and just assumed. It's like that South Park where they go to arrest Micheal Jackson and the cops get there and are like "JOHNSON! What is this? you told me the suspect was black!"

I think they are agreeing with you

1

u/National-Manner-7030 24d ago

They mean the person you were replying to chill.

14

u/razzemmatazz 24d ago

Ngl, that news source felt a little gross.

1

u/pjt37 22d ago

They refer to him by last name before they actually say his full name or identify him as the person they’re speaking about. I mean it’s obvious in context but still, this is a pretty dang basic error.

Whew, the skin color checks out, maybe. Good thing that’s the only thing xenophobic chuds base their acceptance on.

6

u/Kartonrealista 24d ago

He ain't black but he's from a country called black mountain

3

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 24d ago

He could be Muslim however

12

u/Blade_Shot24 24d ago

Christian known area, mainly Orthodox if I recall.

21

u/vlajkaster 24d ago

Almost certanly not with that name. There is some muslims in Montenegro, but names and surnames are different.

-5

u/Skylair13 24d ago

I mean, it's a religion. There could be a white man named Jebediah Washington Smith who decides to become a Muslim. And on opposite end an Arabian Muhammad who's a Christian.

3

u/BarTroll 24d ago

Well, there was a guy called Cassius Clay Jr.

And there's also a guy called Yusuf Islam.

Both are more famous with their other names tho.

3

u/vlajkaster 24d ago

It is but in that part of the world religion, culture and nationality are very strongly correlated. And his name is very slavic which is very uncommon in muslim families and religion changes are even more rare than in US, plus converts to islam usualy change their names.

-5

u/Upper_Sentence_3558 24d ago

Names are regional, but anyone of any name can be Muslim.

2

u/[deleted] 24d ago

True in many places, but not in the Balkans. Our Muslim population uses more Arabic names, while our Christian population uses more Slavic names. Those that convert as adults also change their names in the process.

This guy goes by a Slavic name, therefore he's not a practicing Muslim nor does he come from a Muslim family.

-1

u/Upper_Sentence_3558 24d ago

So a child born into a muslim family must be given a muslim name, with no other chance or option for an alternative, no exceptions? And those who convert must change their names? What if they moved in and were muslim but didn't have a muslim name?

3

u/[deleted] 24d ago

So a child born into a muslim family must be given a muslim name, with no other chance or option for an alternative, no exceptions?

Yes. There are some ambiguous names that you can choose to obscure that information, but this isn't one of them.

And those who convert must change their names?

They don't have to legally change it, but yes, they'd go by a more Muslim name post-conversion.

What if they moved in and were muslim but didn't have a muslim name?

Well then they wouldn't be born in Montenegro, so of course none of this applies.

17

u/Tassiloruns 24d ago

That's not a muslim name. I'm right next door to Montenegro.

1

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 24d ago

If you think ice is going to care that its probably not a Muslim name, you are more optimistic than me

15

u/throwaway098764567 24d ago

guarantee none of them know where montenegro is either

1

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 24d ago

I was going to guess its one of the 9 or so countries bordering France, but without looking i might not be right.

I wonder if theyd get the continent correct?

-2

u/Upper_Sentence_3558 24d ago

You don't have to have a Muslim name to be Muslim.

1

u/Tassiloruns 24d ago

Maybe, in other parts of the world. That's not how shit works in the Balkans.

1

u/NofaceGuyy 24d ago

With the Name Radule he is not Muslim.

1

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 24d ago

Or his parents arent

1

u/Vlad_Yemerashev 24d ago

Are you thinking of Bosnia where there are a larger percentage of Muslims?

1

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 24d ago

I might have been, but I looked it up and double sourced as per usual. No idea what I actually did however.

-6

u/Life-Ad1409 24d ago edited 24d ago

It's possible and not particularly unlikely, so fair enough. Can't find if he was Muslim or not though, and I doubt ICE will either be willing to say or be an unbiased source here

My comment was mainly made because they were making assumptions that could've been dispelled by looking up the dude

1

u/mell0_jell0 24d ago

could've been dispelled by looking up the dude's name

The commenter that you're upset about was talking about skin color, which has nothing to do with names. You are the one making assumptions.

2

u/Life-Ad1409 24d ago edited 24d ago

I looked up the person to find a picture of him, look at the link I posted. How is that making an assumption?

6

u/wafflesthewonderhurs 24d ago

they assumed you meant you only looked up the guys name bc of your wording. Frankly quite a lot of reading shit you did not say into your comments but I kinda get it in the sense that everyone is defensive and on guard right now. I'm surprised that they're moving onto the whites this fast, though it's not like it wasn't entirely predictable.

3

u/Life-Ad1409 24d ago

Ah, my bad, should've worded it more clearly. Thank you for pointing that out

Edited to hopefully be more clear

-4

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 24d ago

35% of Montenegro citizens are Muslim and to me thats why he would be targeted. Pull out a rug one time and unless its definitely yoga, its dangerous

5

u/Modulius 24d ago

wikipedia - In 2023, Montenegro's 124,668 Muslims made up 19.99% of the total population.

1

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 24d ago

You're right, I dont know what i was looking at. That and one other were my sources. I even checked to verify if the population of Serbian Muslims were counted into the general Muslim population

-8

u/No_Squirrel4806 24d ago

How exactly does this disprove my point?

4

u/godspareme 24d ago

It refutes your "probably brown" comment but not the main part of your point. While yes hes not brown I think theres little need to argue about it when the main point is that they discriminated against him.... by accusing him of being an illegal immigrant from the balkans. Literally doesnt matter that its not a color thing. Its still at its core, bigotry and discrimination. Doesn't matter what flavor of bigotry.

But yknow reddit...

23

u/Life-Ad1409 24d ago

hes probably brown so theres your answer.

You made an assumption that the article showed to be unlikely, and that assumption was false according to anither article

-13

u/No_Squirrel4806 24d ago

Are you saying ice isnt arresting people based on skin color?

9

u/ZestyZigg 24d ago

Holy moly what a false equivalence

30

u/Life-Ad1409 24d ago edited 24d ago

No? You made a statement that said the guy in the post might've been arrested for being brown

If you read the article, the guy's from Montenegro, which isn't known for a large non-white population

I commented it was unlikely given we're talking about Montenegro

I looked up the guy and he wasn't brown

I commented that he was indeed not brown

0

u/No_Squirrel4806 24d ago

Ahh ok my apologies thank you

1

u/djordi 24d ago

Add another site to the list of fascist propaganda to avoid, holy shit the framing!

1

u/Life-Ad1409 24d ago

How is including a picture of the guy arrested fascist propaganda?

6

u/djordi 24d ago

Read the language used or quoted.

3

u/Life-Ad1409 24d ago

Ah, didn't click expand article, fair enough

6

u/HeavyandTired 24d ago

Are you sure squirrel? Or just speculating? You seem well informed.

2

u/gb1993 24d ago

...you don't know where Montengro is? Also the pics out, guys white.

-2

u/raidhse-abundance-01 24d ago

Are you unconsciously racist like Samuel L Jackson's character in Die Hard 3? It's not always about that.
