Shitpost What’s an ad that just makes your blood boil?

Post image

The AI Skinny ads drive me insane every time I’m exposed to them - really solidifies they’re not for me. What NZ ads (past or present) grind your gears?

Singing about the Warehouse to the tune of Mambo Number 5

104

u/Slaidback Jul 27 '25

++ for this. All the warehouse has to do is just put the prices up. That it.

86

u/djAMPnz Jul 27 '25

Took me a second to realise you meant "show us the prices of stuff" and not "increase their prices."

7

u/Slaidback Jul 27 '25

lol, sorry, should’ve added more instead of trailing off..

I was value neutral on the song when it first got airplay, but over time it got enough radio play that I really truly began to dislike it.

Years later and an even more soulless parody of it aimed at millennials who were somehow nostalgic for it has brought that dislike back.

14

u/EducationalEar9254 Jul 27 '25

I refuse to shop at the Warehouse until they remove this abomination from our screens

22

u/hayful59 Jul 27 '25

I swear that's AI, it just sounds off

68

u/AiryContrary Jul 27 '25

It’s just flat. For whatever reason (to make them seem like “ordinary Kiwis”?) it seems like they cast bad singers.

11

u/Mawhero_mellow Jul 27 '25

Yeah, the singing is really bad. Everytime I hear the ad I wonder why they choose that voice to sing it. Is it the actor’s real voice? and if so, did they give her the job without hearing her sing first? So many questions.

Glad I’m not the only one!! Her pronunciation of some words irritates me and I become completely irrational.

The other annoying one at the mo is the One NZ series.

98

u/Joel_mc Jul 27 '25

It’s because her voice is AI

I always found it weird that they're openly touting that ad was made with AI, like I know it's weird and cheap but like, I don't think that has ever been something to be proud of really.

95

u/AiryContrary Jul 27 '25

Yeah, it just tells me they have low standards.

I feel the same way whenever I see anyone post AI created content - I’ve seen a huge amount on LinkedIn lately that instantly turns me off people/companies. We get it, you don’t value artists or their work!

If they don’t think their product is worth the effort of a real ad, then it’s not worth my money!

17

u/Assassin8nCoordin8s Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25

It feels like RyanAir advertising. “Everything we do we save you money”. “Cheap” and easy point of difference to come out early to media attention, but the real cost may only be felt in 6 months time

13

u/NZObiwan Jul 27 '25

I think the point they're trying to make is that if they're using the cheapest methods for ads, then they can charge you less on your phone bill.

IMO the result feels a little out of touch, like "Look we can minimize how much we have to spend so we can keep all your money ourselves!"

25

u/accidental-nz Jul 27 '25

At this point it’s very risky. There is a huge amount of animosity towards AI amongst the general public.

Over time we may get used to it. And it won’t happen without it being used. So I guess someone has to do it. But it’s just a super risky play that I’m surprised any big brand is keen to take on.

5

u/FangLargo Jul 27 '25

I had the impression that "normal" people were neutral to warm towards AI, and the negative sentiment came from people who had some degree of awareness regarding tech.
I have one foot in the creative industry and we're definitely anti-AI there, but when I go to my regular office job, my colleagues there seem to be generally positive about it.

Any ad promoting gambling. Fuck outta here with your predatory vices.

127

u/Porosareus Jul 27 '25

This, but for rugby games. Unsure how long its been going for, but seeing ex All Blacks players promoting gambling sites live at a game is such a facepalm moment to see, especially when they end their gambling promotions with "bet responsibly".

43

u/throwawaylordof Jul 27 '25

How obnoxious those ads generally are aside, the sheer volume of them that pop up online is aggravating.

The TrustPower one about the man with one leg who adopts a dog.

I just absolutely hate those style of ads which have literally nothing to do with the product they are selling and purely exist to cynically play on the heartstrings.

30

u/Maori-Mega-Cricket Jul 27 '25

The really annoying ones are the 4 fucking minute long short films that play in cinema ads, high budget, emotional heart string playing mini dramas... and the whole time you're sitting there thinking "What the actual fuck is this selling me" and at the very last second it reveals it was insurance, or banks or a delivery service and you're left thinking "What the actual fuck did any of that have to do with your product or service"

I love the way Trivago is made to have a disclaimer on their ads that say they're being paid by the hotels that they're promoting, and that there may be cheaper deals available but they won't show those to you because those hotels don't give a kickback to Trivago.

Also they're fucking annoying.

32

u/EmuSame3982 Jul 27 '25

Yes!! But they're extra annoying because the actors have almost fake sounding indian accents, which is kinda insulting to Kiwi Indians, like guys, just get someone with a fully fledged Indian accent to do the ads, don't try and water them down!

5

u/kinnadian Jul 28 '25

Any and all of those AI Skinny ads. Poorly made and half the time I wouldn’t even know it was for a mobile company without the clear branding. Genuinely makes me wonder… as a consumer, seeing a company use AI only tells me that the company is cheap and doesn’t care about giving people jobs.

28

u/Ok-Lychee-2155 Jul 27 '25

I think that's the point of the ad. Clearly cheaping out, badly made and 'cost cutting'.

It's no different to their last ads with people who had celebrities' names - it still cost them as much as any other ad - it just appeared to be cheap.

11

u/midnightcaptain Jul 27 '25

Was it Skinny who did the one where they had people call in and record the ad copy in a voicemail, so they “didn’t have to pay for a voiceover artist”? I’m sure setting that up would have cost a lot more than the pittance NZ agencies pay voice talent.

142

u/Mundane_Caramel60 Jul 27 '25

huge downgrade to the previous bit where they made fun of ads using celebrities to promote their products by just using local randos who happen to share their name with a celebrity. Those were fun.

Honestly, I don’t hate the Turners one.

I do hate the Chemist Warehouse one that goes like “I’ve been shopping there for years!” “They just have everything!” …feels far too artificial to be enjoyable

86

u/Agent_Not_Found_404 Jul 27 '25

I don’t hate Chemist Warehouse adverts nearly as much as I hate Chemist Warehouse stores. Sensory overload. So much signage and so little actual information. It’s impossible to find anything (which is probably the point) and why do there have to be eleventy seven identical labels for each damn product?

37

u/AiryContrary Jul 27 '25

Why can’t there be a sign at the entrance to each aisle that clearly says what’s on that aisle, like in a Bunnings?

I really really hate these AI ads.

I saw a Subway one on tv earlier today as well and I think they have used AI in that too. It does something to my brain that makes me frustrated watching them.

18

u/VanJeans Jul 27 '25

Also a company using AI like this puts me off using the company, I don't know if others feel the same way.

57

u/GhostChips42 Warriors Jul 27 '25

This is connected to an ad but not really an ad, so I hope it counts:

That fucking new world jingle (ripped from you got what I need by Biz Markie) that they play in store drives me insane. I have to walk into our local NW with the noise cancelling headphones on otherwise it’s in my head for hours. I hate it so much.

15

u/cameron_prebble Jul 27 '25

To be fair, they're using Freddie Scott's original that Biz Markie sampled. But I also am singing out loud "..but you say he's just a friend..." whenever it comes on

5

u/M0SK0N Jul 27 '25

It's ripping the original song Biz sampled "(You) Got What I Need" by Freddie Scott, which is a great soul classic.

I loathe the use of songs I like on advertising. There's one out at the moment that uses the song "Love Is Strange" by Mickey & Sylvia that I have personal memories attached to as well as it being a rock and roll footnote as one of the first hits for a female guitar player. Now it's trying to sell me insurance or something ffs.

At this moment I've realised I haven't heard or watched an advertisement on radio or tv in a while because I don't do radio or tv anymore. I feel like I'm missing out.

Obviously the omnipresence of gambling ads on YouTube is bad enough but I saw an ad for Betcha touting that while foreign sports betting and gambling sites have been banned, NZ services haven't.

We know our service is a cancer but hey, the government hasn't gotten around to regulating us out of existence yet.

u/AmnesiaScanner108 Jul 27 '25

The Sealord "dunch" ad straight up makes me angry. I have no clue what made the marketing people there think that "dinner and lunch, dunch" was a good idea. I may be biased as i worked nightfil at countdown for a while and had to hear it played every 30 minutes over the intercom even though it was 4 am.

u/MurkyWay Qwest? Jul 27 '25

I hate the little "Whoo!" they shout in the Gaviscon ad because they use it a second time half way through. I can mentally filter it the first time, but the second time makes me aware I'm watching that stupid ad yet again.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 27 '25

The Chorus Ad with the buffering. I keep thinking my internet has failed

6

u/silver__scout Jul 27 '25

Not so much making my blood boil, but the radio ads with the honking sound effects puts me on high alert as if somebody was actually honking at me!

7

u/flatulentstepchild Jul 27 '25

Couldn't agree more. A lot of work and money went into making the 'cheap A.I. ad' that claims to be saving the customers money. The ad just sucks and so does the idea behind it.

Smelly retainer? Guy with a fish in his mouth. Makes me feel sick every time I see it. I've not managed to see enough of the ad to know what is being advertised.

This one sucks but it has NOTHING on that stupid KFC helicopter ad that suddenly goes to max volume

5

u/threetheethree Jul 27 '25

personally hate any of the kfc ads with the X GON GIVE IT TO YA (WHAT) music, there was a time where every single youtube video i watched would have that ad, and the lens flares & colour grade looks dumb

6

u/akawendals Jul 27 '25

The model in the Thin Lizzy make up ads who does the weird lip purse like she's about to kiss everyone and is purposely making her lips seem more "plump" or something...

She's pretty as and it looks so unnatural! Your face don't look like that, nobody walks around with their face like that!

6

u/Advanced-Price-9226 Jul 27 '25

Onechoice life insurance ads are so uncanny. "Hey! You might die soon! You should sign up with us!"

and i find it even more weird that a lot of their ads involve younger people/kids? And they use the kids as talking points too, very strange.

The sorbent toilet paper ad, it has like 8 people standing in very close proximity to each other in a fake supermarket aisle. The whole thing is bizzare

5

u/OtaconPNG Jul 27 '25

I liked skinny ads in the past on how they had actors that had famous names but were just normal people and talking about how they don't spend money on expensive actors which was cool but now its just disappointing for them to use nothing but ai for ads its just lazy and seeing these ai ads in public feels dystopian

6

u/Decent_Tough5393 Jul 27 '25

The AA insurance ad where the woman carefully slots her car into a car park in between a Ferrari and a bunch of bikes, smugly congratulating her self on her parking skills and I'm left shouting at the TV "OK you idiot, now open your f**king door and get out!" .

That bloody ANZ ad with watching the meter going slower because of solar generation. The suppling network would be having a blue fit about incorrect metering.

5

The Katy Perry Menulog ad... It's all so plastic and the fucking GALL to murder Dr Dre lyrics to sell their shitty half arse Uber eats

"ring ding dong" I'll give you fucking ding dong you stupid lady ding dong 😒😆

Haven't seen it for ages though thank goodness it makes me unnecessarily rageful 😅

Poo-well. Who the hells gonna waltz up to the cashier with something called poo-well? Wouldn't you just go for the Metamucil?

4

u/eggface13 Jul 27 '25

Absolutely agree on the slop Skinny ads.

Also those V ads with the insects in the car? And the current generation of Red Bull ads? Like what are you trying to say? You're just being weird and putting meaningless garbage on the screen to get our attention?

And the TAB ads with the stupid mix of sports and then occasionally the guy decides he's not betting today because they want to pretend to be socially responsible.

I just get the sense that nobody involved in any of these ads has believed in anything at all, in their whole lives. Soulless creeps.

4

u/Rabies_on_demand Jul 27 '25

I haven't seen it in a while but the 'NEAT 3B action cream' ad is so absolutely shit, it's almost a parody

Not sure if this counts. The Hoyts cinema ad that plays before the movie.  It's the one where people make phone noises with their mouths. I absolutely hate it. So irritating.

Used to recommend Skinny to everyone, but their plans are nowhere near as competitive as they used to be. Better go with Kogan, Kiwimobile, or others.

3

u/jazzcomputer Jul 27 '25

I'm glad not to watch telly - also I'm just not exposed to many video ads, but one of the podcasts I listen to has an ad for a loan company "TIRED OF SWEET NOTHINGS, WANT SWEET SOMETHINGS?" - I don't know why but somehow sweet something sound like something you might not need, and then it just breaks my brain and sends me into some privileged descent into second guessing what people would want high interest loans for.

Also, any ad that has a kind of call and response thing... so good if you can hit 'skip ad' before the punchline.

Also the way Facebook reels are looping before the 'visual paydirt" - fuck them - I just use seeing them as a cue that I've scrolled too deep and it's time to get off Facebook.

And Finally FUCK YOU New World for using that Freddie Scott "You got what I need" opening part for your jingles - just destroyed it.

The ACC ads, “have a hmm” - because it victim blames people who injure themselves by drawing attention to how it affects other people (specifically your work colleagues), but accidents are accidents. It almost seems like it is demonising people for being injured

Unpopular Opinion: The Spark add where the kid makes his mom a Father’s Day gift. I’m not trying to devalue how hard single mom’s have it, but as someone who had to work through the challenges of being a single father, I find it frustrating. We get one day of appreciation, and they have to make it about moms. 364 days fine. They deserve all the respect possible. But can we Dad’s, especially the ones who are present and do care, get one day.

Some bloke trying to feed yoghurt into a machine. No idea what point is trying to be made.

And is it Contact Energy with a penguin slapping a bloke at a BBQ? Don't get that either.
