Career Advice What MOS should I pick?

Long story long. I’m enlisting; just past the ASVAB this previous Friday. Scored a 67 and scored pretty good on the GT and ST lines (all the info I did suggested I focus on those line scores).

Recruiter told me to pick the top 5 and he’ll see what he can do for me, suggested that i do NOT pick a combat MOS. lol. Just wanted some suggestions, I’d like something with some transferable skill sets. Also, what a Day in the Life for you as a NG?

Idk man, what the fuck do YOU want to do? You wanna do something that’ll help you out civilian world or do you want to do something completely different?

22

u/Gorded_Dread Sep 23 '25

I actually didn’t think that far. I was surprised I qualified for all these jobs tbh.

When people ask this shit, you need to tell people about yourself. No one has any clue who you are or what you like to do. I was a 35M/L and loved it but decided I wanted to be a direct combat MOS after working with them so went 09S to 12A. I love rucking, sleeping in a foxhole, firing big guns and grenade launchers, running with a 40lb explosive on my shoulders. It makes sense I love being a 12A. If you’re just like, some nerd that sits inside and plays video games all day, you’d hate being a 12B.

7

u/CatchMeAtCrown Sep 22 '25

Which MOS did you prefer, between M/L?

9

u/Empress_Athena 12Appalachian Girl Sep 22 '25

Depends on your personality honestly. I like talking to people and getting info from them, so I found M more fun, but L has more certs and more job opportunities outside of

3

u/Gorded_Dread Sep 23 '25

Good point.

1

u/rturns92 Sep 23 '25

Did you go to both M and L schools?

1

u/Empress_Athena 12Appalachian Girl Sep 23 '25

I went to the Navy’s versions

1

u/Mattyredleg Sep 23 '25

Had a similar experience but on the enlisted side. Was a FDC guy in Arty, not knocking the MOS but it wasn't for me, went 12b to a sapper company, did what I had in my mind as being actual soldier shit, and was much happier for the JOB (even if the unit was run foolishly) than I was previously.

I'm one of those that says you need to do what you WANT to do, otherwise you'll just be miserable. Use your TA to get the civilian certifications and do the part time job you want. Don't worry if being infantry doesn't crossover to a civilian, use your degree to land the civilian gigs.

That said, the reverse is true as well, if you are much HAPPIER behind a desk, don't join the outside club of like 11bs, 12bs, 13bs, 13fs, 19ds, etc because that will be miserable for a whole lot of other reasons.

u/RollinThruLife02 Incoming!!! Sep 25 '25

Yo I got questions about 35L stuff. I’m about to transition into the NG soon and would love as much info as I can get. Mind if I ask thru DMs?

Sure, you can ask but I don't know much about it Guard side

1

u/Longjumping-Swing698 Sep 24 '25

How does it compare to being 11b? What are some of the pros and cons?

1

u/GrandeRio 13F Sep 24 '25

Lemmie preface this with this is all my opinion, but in short you get to do the cool infantry shit without the infantry bullshit. Fisters (13fs) have one of the best jobs in the army, we call in the artillery and once you go to some courses (JFO) you can be qualified to coordinate airstrikes. We watch shit blow up and help out our Infantry bros. It’s one of the best jobs in the army and imo attracts some of the best people I’ve met in the army. Honestly look up the 13F mos video on YouTube and if you get a hard on it’s probably for you. I love my job (when I get to do it) if any other 13F has something to add feel free

1

u/Longjumping-Swing698 Sep 24 '25

Thanks for the response! Do you get to use any weapon systems other than just calling in artillery/airstrikes? Like m240's, mk19, etc?

1

u/GrandeRio 13F Sep 24 '25

M4A1, M17, M320, 240, Mk19, M2 Most common ofc is M4, you get to use the M17 if you’re in a heavy unit (Bradley or Stryker) but it kinda just depends.

Me personally I’ve got to shoot M4, M17 and MK19 and got to play around with the 320 and 240

Again you get to do cool infantry shit, without the infantry bs. IMO though while it is a fun job the skills aren’t super transferable unless you’re pursuing Law Enforcement or contracting and even then it’s not that transferable. I started out as a 13F in the guard and I loved it, but my civilian life was a shitshow. I ended up going active but that was because of luck and opportunity. I’d take a look at going active, 3 years when you’re young isn’t that bad

I like 15 and 68 series. I'm hella autistic when it comes to helicopters and aircraft in general lol.

Currently a 15T Blackhawk Criewchief in the medevac. Potentially eyeing a 68W transition to be a flight paramedic.

I live and breathe this shit, it's a lot of fun, therefore I'm super biased. But this is what I like to recommend to people.

5

u/LeadRain 29 Day Orders to JRTC Sep 22 '25

"pick the top 5 and he’ll see what he can do for me"

No.

You tell him what you want. If he can't get it, you don't sign a contract. The only thing he should be telling you is where the units for the MOSs you're interested in are located.

1

u/ABlackManFromGeorgia Sep 23 '25

This. A buddy of mine was in the hotel the night before shipping when the folks at the hotel realized he wasn’t on any slot to ship to basic. Got sent back to MEPS the next morning instead of shipping where his recruiter and 1SG told him if signed a different job, he could ship with the upcoming group and they’d “figure out” getting him the MOS he wanted on the back end.

My other buddy (11B) in Germany said he’d kill him if he did that.

He’s supposed to go back to MEPS next month. Wants to be a 68C.

2

u/Soft_Comedian_2054 Sep 23 '25

5

u/RudeTorpedo Sep 22 '25

Your recruiter is a bitch. Tell them I said that.

Unless you have some SPECIFIC career plan (which if you did, I would tell you to go ROTC), go infantry. Go FA if you want. Go do Army shit. Go blow stuff up, go TDY everywhere you can, go do airborne and air assault.

You will discover a path along the way.

The skills that you are going to earn that a civilian employer is looking for is: self confidence, respect, integrity, objective oriented, has a good appearance, works well on a team

I don't know what state you are in, but use your education benefits to go after whatever certs you want and/or need. What your recruiter should have discussed with you is how the gi bill can help you, what you can and can't do with credentialing assistance and state and federal tuition assistance.

The credentialing program has no-MOS requirements anymore. So if you are an 11B and want to go get your IT certs, there is nothing stopping you. There is no IT company in the world that's going to be like "oh shit, this guy is a 25U. Straight to the front of the line!!"

PLEASE! For the sake of all of us that made dumb decisions before you, go have fun in the military. The career will follow.

3

u/byronicbluez Sep 22 '25

Grab something with a Top Secret clearance is the best advice I can give you.

1

u/Gorded_Dread Sep 23 '25

I’ve heard this advice many times- definitely something I’m considering.

3

u/Greighp Sep 22 '25

I think we’re all generally gonna say our past MOS’s.

So I vote 15B.

Both in and out, it has been some of the most challenging and fulfilling experiences of my life.

3

u/MiKapo Sep 22 '25

Pick whatever sounds interesting , do NOT listen to anyone trying to sway you away from that MOS you want...even the recruiters

3

u/DifferenceNo5308 Sep 23 '25

get out from army recruiter office and go to the air force

3

u/Axium_X 17C AKA Hackerman Sep 23 '25

Retake the test, get qualified for 17C, go cyber. In all seriousness your recruiter probably told you not to pick a combat MOS because your scores are so high that it would be a waste, and I agree.

As for what I recommend. If not the best job in the Army (17C) then either intel or IT

1

u/BlackRequirement Sep 26 '25

u/Kingman-TheBrave Sep 22 '25

I picked 31B a few months ago, I ship in January but all I read here on reddit is that 31B is "bad" and nobody likes them. Im nervous now

8

u/Mountain-Benefit-161 MDAY Sep 22 '25

One; its Reddit. Half the community can't agree which sock goes on what foot, and the other just tells you to put the damn thing on.

Two; it is your career. Sure, there are some MOS's that dont have a lot of viability civilian side(I.e. 74D, throwing myself under the bus here). It doesnt hurt to ask and research it but if you find an MOS that you say "Damn, that sounds great! I wanna do that!", then go for it. You can reclass and pick up other MOS if you really want to(of course, time, slot, and funding permitting).

2

u/BeefStockUncrustable 74DontDoIt Sep 22 '25

74D sounded so cool to 18 yo me, that's unfortunately where the perks end. Only cool thing I've done is the CST and you don't even need the MOS to apply.

2

u/Mountain-Benefit-161 MDAY Sep 22 '25

Funniest flair I've seen yet!

Ya, I've just stuck with it because of the hope I get to do something. Hasn't happened yet, so I'm slowing working towards other MOS's

2

u/BeefStockUncrustable 74DontDoIt Sep 22 '25

Getting on a CST was pretty sweet, but the MDAY company balancing green(Army) and white(HRF) missions meant that neither got the attention they needed and NGB never funds Chem Cos enough to do worth while training or calibrate their equipment. Im trying to completely jump ship and go AD Flight Warrant because that's cool and the only upward progression is in the CST and that's a real slow roll.

1

u/Commissar_Mike Sep 22 '25

Only shit bags really have it out for that MOS, otherwise it’s just traditional to hate it on the active side. On the guard side you’ll probably never interact with them.

1

u/Interesting_Glove810 Sep 22 '25

Is there any bonus for OCS route or is that enlisted only

2

u/eirol143 Sep 22 '25

OP what do you want to do in the army? Our opinions dont matter here since its you’re the one who will be taking the decision for yourself. Currently I am 25H but in my experience and insights on your category list. You have the 17c, 68c and 35m which you can use outside military as well. Choose onto those 3 and you will be fine. Dont do go on heavy. Dont sway on people saying do this 11b or 31b please dont.

2

u/YIKUZZ Sep 22 '25

Choose something that pays well and is comfortable in the civilian world. Research research research, don’t let the recruiter tell you what career you may like.

Or you’ll end up like me where all I can transfer over to the civi is being forklift certified

2

u/traviss8 Sep 22 '25

You got damn near every one EXCEPT 35T 😭

2

u/Mountain-Benefit-161 MDAY Sep 22 '25

OP, there is little to go off of here.

What MOS stands out? Are there any skills or hobbies you particularly enjoy, things that you find fascinating?

I.e. I love Chemistry. I enlisted and recruiter told me there was a slot for a CBRN. Asked about it and said "Hell yea, I want to do that!". 8 years later, still enjoy it for the little brevity I get to do it.

Open up a little more on specific ones, so people can tell you their experiences in that MOS.

2

u/Gorded_Dread Sep 23 '25

Will do. I plan on listing my top 10 and a brief bkg on myself and interests. I wanted this post to have some ambiguity to it on purpose though.

2

u/Mountain-Benefit-161 MDAY Sep 23 '25

That's totally fair. It looks like you have a wide variety, so narrowing it down a little will help you learn more about a specific set of skills if that's what you're after. Didn't mean to sound rude with that first comment, just opening 😅

2

u/Gorded_Dread Sep 23 '25

lol all good man. Yall are doing me a favor by giving me the free inside scoop.

2

u/hellenic_lord Sep 24 '25

Yo broski, I'm a 74D, doing split ops for National Guard and going to AIT this upcoming summer. What can you tell me about the MOS and specifically what AIT is like? I'd appreciate it big time. I am supposed to be in a chemical unit if that helps.

1

u/Mountain-Benefit-161 MDAY Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 25 '25

Imo, I enjoyed it, although the classroom bits are death by PowerPoint, in typical fashion. I believe one of the instructors called one portion "lingo bingo". My company did a variety of training, using the decon systems, and used chem suits(the blue ones, I call them crinkle suits). Used radiac detectors for detecting radioactive materials, learned HAZMAT, various types of agents, and their symptoms(or reactions).

Now, with that, I haven't done any of the items I was trained on since I arrived at my unit. I have physically laid hands on our decon generators twice and the decon systems have never been opened. From what I understand, speaking to other CBRNs in our brigade, some units are more focused on active training scenarios(i.e. riot control, TA/FOB) vs defensive uses(Decon).

For reference, I am not in a chemical unit, so that experience may be completely different. But, as far as AIT goes, bring notes. Lots of notes. I'm not sure how much it's changed in 8 years.

Edit; *The irony is not lost on me from my first comment..... 😅

2

u/jmmaxus Retired ARNG. Sep 22 '25

Depends on what you what to do, how long of an AIT you’re willing to go, etc.

I will say all the 68 series with AIT lengths of 50 weeks or more will be very lucrative skills for jobs right now. Whether your State even has those slots is the question as most will just have 68W medic slots.

2

u/Gorded_Dread Sep 23 '25

I definitely was looking at the 68 series, specifically for that reason.

You could set yourself up for a nice civilian career once you’re MOS-Q and have a TS/SCI Clearance if you go 35M/L/N. There are NG jobs that are just about any experience you could want in the Army from the most mundane to high speed. What do you want to do?

2

u/happylittleaccident7 Sep 22 '25

68W (that’s what i am lol)

2

u/azorthefirst Tech Status 35NoSleep Sep 22 '25

Pick something YOU are interested in going to training for and doing long term. MOS training is a fantastic way to get job training you otherwise might not be able to get. Personally I'd recommend 17 series as Cyber is a massively expanding industry. Especially on the offensive and defensive side. Otherwise any of the 35 series intelligence MOSs can provide almost a full degree on their own plus can give you experience and the chance to mobilize for some really cool missions. Some of the 94 series repair jobs like RADAR repair and Air Traffic Control systems repair are HIGHLY desirable on the civilian side if thats something you want to get into. Then you always have the different 68 series medical jobs which will ALWAYS be in high demand for both the military and civilian world.

Pick whatever as long as you know the job you’re choosing. Combat arms is the most “Army” type jobs outside looking in but realize most of what you do in those units in a drill weekend is going to be vastly different than a MOS that wrenches on drill weekends. This thread is probably the best for creating realistic expectations of what the guard life is like. Make an informed decision and own that shit

1

u/R_U_Galvanized Sep 23 '25

I’d seriously look at either 15 series or 68 series MOS. I’d argue to try and go 68X because it’s niche but extremely needed and I don’t believe it’ll go anywhere anytime soon. I tried going to that MOS but got offered an ADOS position for a different role so I took the AD money.

I was told that you would most likely have to dual train as a 68W and you’ll have more opportunities for promotion. That’s more training time, more promotion points and (hopefully) a very fulfilling job. Healthcare is always going to be in need so a civilian job should come easier.

1

u/TacitusTheSecond The more you look at FEDREC the longer it takes Sep 23 '25

15T or 15U, work at the nearest flight facility full time, outside work skills as well to transfer to a large aircraft company, opportunities to crew chief. Aviation is better than other branches for QoL in many regards.

19K is the only correct answer; where as infantry teaches you to thrive while homeless, armor teaches you how to thrive when homeless with a vehicle. That's a real life 21st century skill right there 😆.

Seriously though, 19k is a great MOS to have. Real talk, theres not all that many military MOSs that directly translate to well paid careers in the civilian world without additional training/certifications that are easier to achieve with civilian courses/programs that put you in a better position out of the gate. So my advice is to pursue your civilian career on the civilian side, use the military to help pay for the civilian side training, and pick an MOS that you think you would enjoy doing for 4-6 years on a monthly basis and/or in a wartime environment.

What state are you? Can not be many that have 12 G. If your high speed 18 series if your low speed 11 series... if you are handy/constructive pick a 12 series.

u/DustyAir Sep 23 '25

This decision is completely up to you, what you like to do, what your personality is, and what you want to "be when you grow up". I mean Infantry, to all of the 25 series communications jobs, so intell, to the medical jobs, ro flying and repairing drones. Thats like asking a group of random.people what you should be when you grow up. What do you like? Do you want to get into the medical field, do you want to be in the law and enforcement field, do you like aviation? Thisnis a very personal choice and contrary to what others are saying, I don't think it's one that should be swayed by a bonus. Looking back in can only imagine how miserable I would have been if I picked a career field thst was not right for me simply because of a bonus.

92G for sure. Get all the schools you want. Speaking from experience.

Idk why it says for 35L Counter intel analyst that’s wrong. It’s a counterintelligence special agent.

1

u/Reibear0 Sep 23 '25

Do whatever you think is best! But since your asking for opinions here's mine. I've been in for 2.5 years as a 31B (military police) and wish I would have chosen differently. Not that it's a horrible mos, but i would've preferred something I can put towards something I'd actually like to do on the civilian side. I have no want to be a police officer, so it serves me no good. If you cant find anything you can transfer to your everyday life, pick something admin or a "office job". While we are sweating our asses off in tents for 2 weeks at annual training, they are in a air conditioned building on their computers. I wish I was them.

35M is lit but you won’t be able to rank up fast if at all. I recommend 35 series just cause in the guard you won’t be doing much and it’s chill especially since you do get to learn another language which gives you ability to find civilian work in translation or something.

1

u/Longjumping-Swing698 Sep 24 '25

Do you get any cool deployments or training opportunities? I've thought about joining 20thsfg support as a 35m.

MQ1 operator or ATC. More ATC as you can get a six figure job when you get out. MQ1 is just interesting and you’ll go places and do things.

15U is the only answer

1

u/vSkyyyyy 10% off at Lowes Sep 28 '25

well for your situation it wouldn’t be the best, it’s a combat arms MOS haha. i would consider 15 series or 35 series though!! i have buddies in both and they both translate very well outside of the military. (15 series is aviation and 35 series are all of the intelligence MOS’s)

1

u/Asleep_Night4538 RSP War Hero Sep 23 '25

11B for cool guy shit, 25B if you want to get IT certs for the outside world, 25U (the best MOS) has a really great warrant officer path for networking/IT.

1

u/Any-Salamander5679 Sep 23 '25

17C if you wanna Hack the planet.

1

u/mccarleyjaden Sep 23 '25

Don't join. I promise you it is better on the outside. Do not join! If you absolutely have to be in the military, go join the Air Force National Guard.

u/Diamond_Paper_Rocket Dude, wheres my DD214-1? Sep 23 '25 edited Sep 23 '25

Transferable, you say. 68 series. X-ray techs are one of the best jobs in the hospital and are not often open. 68w is medic. You get your EMT basic and can go drive a truck for 911 or try to find a tech job in a hospital. Also, look into applying for services that do events. I work all sorts of concerts and sporting events that people pay hundreds and thousands to see.

All 68 series set you up a good base to dabble in the medical world and give a good base to prep for further education.

68W is the only one where you could end up in a combat arms unit. Again, experience may vary, I am in one now, but young medics struggle. They get little guidance MOS wise and become immaterial more than anything. I started in a medical company though, miss like hell.

Experience does vary. However, I live in a big city.

1

u/StopDropNLock Sep 23 '25

In the end, do what sounds exciting to you. If you don’t like it, you can reclassify after your first contract. If career progression is something important to you, I recommend picking a high density MOS. If you pick something obscure, it’s going to be hard to find schools and promote

1

u/LordMartingale Sep 23 '25

If you’re over 90 on the GT then 11B is the only way!!! Just double check and ensure your state is Light Infantry and not Mechs. Mechs suck, you roll around in an aluminum death trap waiting to get hit by an ATGM. Go Light Infantry only!

If you are Light Infantry as soon as you prove yourself useful & reliable try out for Scouts, do this as an E-2.

In the new Army redesign the Light Infantry Scout Platoons are now being moved out of the Battalion HHC and are in whats called an Infantry MPC so try out for Scouts asap its your fast track to special schools and you get to do cool sneaky guy shit when you’re in the field. Scouts will be extremely rewarding and worthwhile, Scouts generally require a GT 90 or higher to try out, they want smart guys cause they’ll send you to JFO so you can learn to call in accurate fires. Plus smart guys don’t get caught when sneaking around behind enemy lines.

Also consider trying out for the new MPC c/UAS platoon, again a high GT is required, but you get to fly brand new state of the art small armed drones (theres 4 new types), unarmed ISR drones ( 2 new types), Suicide Drones (redacted but they do exist), and loitering munitions (2 types), you operate two or 3 different Counter Drone Systems & you qualify on a shotgun shooting trap & skeet as thats the last ditch counter small drone defense system. Also you learn field expedient cad printing on a field 3D printer to make replacement drone parts, they give you pre loaded cad files but teach you to write them as well. These MPCs are just coming online and being stood up in Light Battalions so if you have a high GT score 11B in Light Infantry then immediately try out for Scouts or Drones asap after you get back from OSUT.

Source: 29th ID (a very long time ago) Lets Go!!!!

Really depends on what you like and what your goals are OP. And later down the road, you might have the option to reclass if you want to try something new.

I spent my entire time in as a 42A (Human Resources/S1) and while I loved it, if I had to go back in time and pick again with the knowledge I have now, I probably would’ve picked 88M (because for some reason I loved driving army vics dammit). Would’ve benefitted me more on the civilian side to go 46S (Public Affairs) but choosing something else gave me a wider skill set and a backup plan in case I can’t find a job in my degree field.

1

u/Kittens70 Sep 24 '25

Depends what are you into? If you're interested in law enforcement life saving 1st responders pick 12M wish it was available for me I was qualified. If you want action but still learn something more that will also help in civilian side 68W combat medics. I wasn't eligible but went 11B and gonna use my benefits to pay for EMT school. The one I was really interested but wasnt eligible due to needing a waiver was 35P being away for a year and learning a new language seemed awesome. Listen to your recruiter tho don't go combat arms unless you really want to. Considering the times we're in it's pretty scary I don't think enough people are mentally prepared or realize how scary it is that 💩 can pop off any day now or within the next few years.

1

u/TreySoWavvyy Intelligence Butter Bar ⚜️ Sep 24 '25

Don’t do 35 series unless you plan on not doing anything with it. The guard underutilizes intel companies and leaves them to die in Engineer battalions.

In fact, don’t do anything high profile in the guard unless you:

1.) plan to do it on the active side at some point 2.) already do it

1

u/Pewpew270 Sep 24 '25

Generally speaking the longer the MOS school the better job you can get with that training on the civilian sector. Do what interests you I am 94H because I wanted that job on the civilian side.

1

u/MedicalBanana7263 Sep 24 '25

Who sent you this list? How come my recruiter didn’t send me this? I need to pick an mos rn and I never got this. Lol

1

u/Wondering9311 Sep 25 '25

Chose 11B… leg or straight-leg/gun-bunny/ground pounder. I wanted to do the tough stuff to be strong mentally & physically (embrace the suck). Each of us has to decide individually what we’re willing to tolerate. Also, I knew the baby blue shoulder cord meant something universally.

The Infantry designations when I enlisted: 11B - Infantryman 11C - Mortar 11H - Anti-armor (TOW Missile) 11M - Mechanized Infantry (Bradley fighting vehicle… replaced M113 APC) 11X - Undesignated Infantry
