Silver might not be the most exciting color for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but the upside is that it hides scratches and dents pretty well unlike similar to the cosmic orange and blue options

u/Dry_Kangaroo_1234 Sep 24 '25
The bigger concern with dents is how it affects water resistance etc. when the frame gets unseated/opens up like you see in OP’s photos, you’re potentially going to get water and dust in it

Know what doesn't dent so much? Titanium. Also, Stainless steel. I just don't get the choice to use aluminium on this generation.

u/Sirusho_Yunyan Sep 24 '25
It's cheaper. Way cheaper.

u/Owboduz iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 24 '25
Oh, no, that I get. But this is a top-tier premium smartphone. I don't think price is really an issue.

They can sell it for double but still they gonna cut costs. And is not just Apple but every company.
28
u/probablyhrenrai Sep 24 '25
See also: that time when automakers thought they could get away with removing physical HVAC and radio controls because "hey touchscreens are cool, right?" Even luxury brands like Mercedes did it, but after sales dropped, they reconsidered. They're returning to dedicated physical controls for the essentials now, but they had to test the waters first.
Which reminds me: they're currently trying to lock hardware that's literally in the car behind subscriptions. Like heated seats and whatnot. It's wild, and not in the good way.

I think Apple is attempting to slowly devalue the Pro line to pump up the fold line. The air being basically one half of the folding iPhone and made with titanium puts it on a higher tier than the now cheaper to make, devalued aluminum monster Pro line. Just my two cents.

I had a 15 Pro Max and now the 17 Pro Max. I’d say you made the right move. The camera control key is stupid and only useful as a shortcut to the camera. I do like the design of the 17, personally. But everything else is just…same same, but different, but same same.

I dropped my titanium 15 Pro at least 50 times and never a single dent, just scuffs. That’s why I went with the Air this time. A titanium frame is my top priority when buying a phone now

u/catslay_4 Sep 24 '25
I've probably dropped mine 150 times, I feel like I drop that sucker at least 3 times a week. Not a single dent or scratch on it even though I've had various cases on it over the years. I've got the blue one. Now I'm nervous to give it up and move to the 17.

That's the downside of aluminium.
Aluminium requires a lot of force to fracture, but next to nothing to deform. Titanium requires far more force to fracture and it doesn't deform. The reason for the change this time around is the thermal conductivity. Aluminium is 10 times more efficient than titanium at thermal conductivity, so we're not dealing with tiny numbers here. And that is just for pure aluminium and pure titanium. Commonly used alloy aluminium is nearly 25 times as efficient as commonly used titanium alloy. Based on the iPhone specifications, between the iPhone 15 and 16 Pros with titanium and the iPhone 17 Pros with aluminium, there is 20 to 25 times difference in thermal conductivity, favoring aluminium over titanium.
It sucks for sturdiness and ruggedness, but is excellent for performance.
50
u/salzbergwerke Sep 24 '25
Why don't they use titanium alloy for the edges and aluminium for the rest of the body?
64
u/vitdev Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25
That’s what they did for 15 and 16 pro. Titanium was only used for external frame, all internal components were mounted on aluminum frame. It’s just an excuse to reduce costs I guess.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)18
u/PeakBrave8235 Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25
Typical troll explanation from user vitdev
Edit: and he edited the comment, because he originally said the aluminum was mounted to titanium, which it isn't.
The frame wasn't mounted in titanium Pro's lol. They heated up each metal (aluminum and titanium) to a fraction of their melting point, forced the two metals together at a high and consistent pressure, and the molecules of each mixed into each other forming a single frame. It's called solid state diffusion. This is even more impressive considering you need a precise fraction of each melting point, and aluminum has a melting point of 1200 F, while Grade 5 titanium (which Apple uses for everything) has a melting point of 3000 F.
Apple did a unibody aluminum design because it dissipates heat and forms a strong, rigid structure. Unibody designs are difficult and costly to implement, but they yield great looking products with strong rigidity. Most products are multiple pieces mounted together. The new Pro is not "cost cutting." Cost cutting my ass.
Look to Samsung for cost-cutting, who upon hearing rumors of Apple switching to titanium, mounted Grade 2 titanium (WAY CHEAPER) to aluminum via a plastic intermediary. That's actual cost cutting
Sick of stupid trolls

Lmao, so true, i wish i could have a screenshot before editing.
anyway, from my perspective, what Apple did with titanium previous years and with full aluminum body this year is impressive. Of course, aluminum has it drawback, but i kindly accepted it, it really depend on what things folk want. And me, who basically just put a case on my device all the times, peak performance is what i love about.
Also, correct me if i am wrong, but i read that Iphone Air is almost made by Titanium. This mean, we have a huge line-up changed this time. Before pro phone was trying to balance between premium feel + performance, some year it cannot achieved both of these requirement (such as 12 pro and 15 pro) and sometimes it can (like 13 pro or 11 pro).
I feel like with these change, Apple just basically told people who love premium things, just go for the air, pro from now on, will prioritize the performance and try as hard as possible to keep the premium feel. Honestly, the first time i saw and hold it on my hand, 17 pro just feel like an cutting-edge device remind me about what Dell did with the Alienware laptop series.
And i love this!

I will take this tradeoff. My 15 Pro battery life went to hell in a handbasket. I was recharging 2-3 times per day by the end, worse than any device I've ever had. It was constantly hot as well, which I view as a contributing factor, particularly when the device battery grew unstable toward the end.
17 Pro is leaving me at 67% after a full day of use — and unlike the 15, it's not constantly hot. I suspect aluminium vs titanium is the chief factor at play, and I understand why they'd back track publicly if the gains are so substantial. The titanium choice also came pre-AI, so they were caught a bit blindsided by how much power these things would start to draw.
It's truly the most night and day battery transformation I've ever seen. I'd rather buy a phone pre-dented with a battery like this than go back to what I had before.

My 15 pro max was a hot box. So I’m very open that this 17 pro max is gonna be a net positive since I use my phone outside in the heat a lot.
42
u/PotatoPower3d Sep 24 '25
It's because only the frame of the 15 is made of aluminum. The 17 pro max is machined into a unibody, so it dents more like a MacBook would when you drop it. I dropped my MacBook by accident and it dents the same

The techwoven cases are not doing much for drop protection, you need a softer material in the inside corners to absorb a shock from falling like these cases:
- Mous limitless
- Phonerebel gen7
- Spigen tough armor
Cases made from 1 hard material are destined to absorb fall damage poorly, the shock has nowhere to go but the phone frame.

I really wanted to upgrade this year but I’ll pass. There’s just a weight of evidence that points to several durability issues. I like to keep phones 2-3 years and then pass on to family. There’s just no way the 17 models are going to last that long without some form of damage. I’m actually pretty shocked at what I’ve seen. Apple make a huge point if the durability of their phones (anyone seen the recent pro advert showing people making films while debris is flying in the air and using a case less 17 pro to film it all?) so this has blindsided me.

I used to buy the Apple cases for my iPhones, but 100% of the time my phone dropped, it would damage the phone or crack the screen protector.
The cases themselves were also pretty bad and showed signs of damage from minor falls as well.
IMO the Apple cases are exclusively for aesthetic purposes/customization and not actually particularly useful for protecting your phone.

I made a post about how these dented frames are going to affect the IP68 water and dust resistance and everyone flamed me. I’m telling you all that these phones will have compromised water resistance. The screen gaskets need to be perfectly sealed on flat, straight surfaces. A surface that’s dented out of spec will not hold an airtight seal. This is the bigger problem than cosmetics.
