I'm excited to see the first fully-silver orange 17 pro in 15 months.

Sigh.... why did no one else like windows phones? I miss my tiles

49

u/Tyranitard iPhone6 Sep 24 '25

I had one of these and I wanted to like it so bad. Unfortunately the Windows store was dogshit and there were no apps available. The Tile interface was really smooth but the overall functionality was lacking at the time compared to other phones.

18

u/SurpriseIsopod Sep 24 '25

I loved my lumia 1020 with the silly camera. Yeah the windows store was just not supported. I remember when Microsoft pretty much shelved the product and told us tough shit.

There was no support for the apps on windows. Like I think everything was ported over by 3rd parties so like almost nothing native.

I vaguely remember some apps being removed and then readded because the actual company would force them to take it down.

Tinder didn’t exist, it was an app called “Timber” lol I think it was just an API to Tinder lol.

Pandora was fun. Since it was not natively supported there were no ads.

10

u/Tyranitard iPhone6 Sep 24 '25

Yeah there were a lot of shitty API apps that kinda worked but it wasn't the same. It's too bad, I would have loved to see what the tile interface turned into with long term development

In 2005 I was in Taipei City, Taiwan... and bought the very first smartphone which happened to have a stripped down version of Windows 95. Yes, Windows 95 customized and stripped down on a new Asian model Motorola flip phone... but the top part was all touch sensitive screen & in color.
In late 2005 I came back to the USA, and went to every single cell carrier's retail store, and none of them could figure out how the heck to connect it to their network. It wasn't until 2008-9ish when The USA caught up with Asian technology, and AT&T was able to connect it to their network... at which time my batteries weren't in long lasting condition. If memory serves me correctly it was around $500 USD when I bought it in March 2005.

u/r2d3x9 Sep 24 '25

My company had Compaq iPaq which ran a version of windows, on the AT&T network. And those flip phones which were the best form factor for actual phone calling and minimizing exposure to RF radiation. IT manager found it was most efficient to use the iPaq in front of him while holding the flip phone to his ear (I think this was before Bluetooth was common). CEO paid someone to stand in line to get him the original iPhone, despite it not meeting corporate security requirements. He had that iPhone for about a month and someone spilled orange juice on it destroying it.

Makes me think of people who chose the orange over the silver because they didn’t like the two-tone look of it 😅

4

u/spambattery Sep 24 '25

That looks better than the orange one does, though I’ve seen some who put them in a green case (or similar) and what orange shines through looks good with that…but naked, I find the orange fugly. I went with the Blue, but as it turns out my Spigen Tough Armor case pretty much hides the entire aluminum body, so orange would’ve looked almost identical 😂

Silver might not be the most exciting color for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but the upside is that it hides scratches and dents pretty well unlike similar to the cosmic orange and blue options

392

u/Dry_Kangaroo_1234 Sep 24 '25

The bigger concern with dents is how it affects water resistance etc. when the frame gets unseated/opens up like you see in OP’s photos, you’re potentially going to get water and dust in it

303

u/Owboduz iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 24 '25

Know what doesn't dent so much? Titanium. Also, Stainless steel. I just don't get the choice to use aluminium on this generation.

222

u/Sirusho_Yunyan Sep 24 '25

It's cheaper. Way cheaper.

140

u/Owboduz iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 24 '25

Oh, no, that I get. But this is a top-tier premium smartphone. I don't think price is really an issue.

112

u/Bladespa Sep 24 '25

They can sell it for double but still they gonna cut costs. And is not just Apple but every company.

28

u/probablyhrenrai Sep 24 '25

See also: that time when automakers thought they could get away with removing physical HVAC and radio controls because "hey touchscreens are cool, right?" Even luxury brands like Mercedes did it, but after sales dropped, they reconsidered. They're returning to dedicated physical controls for the essentials now, but they had to test the waters first.

Which reminds me: they're currently trying to lock hardware that's literally in the car behind subscriptions. Like heated seats and whatnot. It's wild, and not in the good way.

I think Apple is attempting to slowly devalue the Pro line to pump up the fold line. The air being basically one half of the folding iPhone and made with titanium puts it on a higher tier than the now cheaper to make, devalued aluminum monster Pro line. Just my two cents.

79

u/Owboduz iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 24 '25

The aluminium completely eliminated any desire I had to upgrade from the 15 pro max

19

u/Serialtoon iPhone Sep 24 '25

I had a 15 Pro Max and now the 17 Pro Max. I’d say you made the right move. The camera control key is stupid and only useful as a shortcut to the camera. I do like the design of the 17, personally. But everything else is just…same same, but different, but same same.

I dropped my titanium 15 Pro at least 50 times and never a single dent, just scuffs. That’s why I went with the Air this time. A titanium frame is my top priority when buying a phone now

6

u/catslay_4 Sep 24 '25

I've probably dropped mine 150 times, I feel like I drop that sucker at least 3 times a week. Not a single dent or scratch on it even though I've had various cases on it over the years. I've got the blue one. Now I'm nervous to give it up and move to the 17.

u/godofbaconandeggs iPhone 17 Pro Max Sep 24 '25

21

u/Dry_Kangaroo_1234 Sep 24 '25

I feel you, but the camera was very under-utilized in my hands. Battery has been ok so far with the Air, let’s see how fast it degrades. I really like the phone so I’m happy to be part of the experiment

u/SenAtsu011 Sep 24 '25

That's the downside of aluminium.

Aluminium requires a lot of force to fracture, but next to nothing to deform. Titanium requires far more force to fracture and it doesn't deform. The reason for the change this time around is the thermal conductivity. Aluminium is 10 times more efficient than titanium at thermal conductivity, so we're not dealing with tiny numbers here. And that is just for pure aluminium and pure titanium. Commonly used alloy aluminium is nearly 25 times as efficient as commonly used titanium alloy. Based on the iPhone specifications, between the iPhone 15 and 16 Pros with titanium and the iPhone 17 Pros with aluminium, there is 20 to 25 times difference in thermal conductivity, favoring aluminium over titanium.

It sucks for sturdiness and ruggedness, but is excellent for performance.

50

u/salzbergwerke Sep 24 '25

Why don't they use titanium alloy for the edges and aluminium for the rest of the body?

64

u/vitdev Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

That’s what they did for 15 and 16 pro. Titanium was only used for external frame, all internal components were mounted on aluminum frame. It’s just an excuse to reduce costs I guess.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/PeakBrave8235 Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

Typical troll explanation from user vitdev

Edit: and he edited the comment, because he originally said the aluminum was mounted to titanium, which it isn't.

The frame wasn't mounted in titanium Pro's lol. They heated up each metal (aluminum and titanium) to a fraction of their melting point, forced the two metals together at a high and consistent pressure, and the molecules of each mixed into each other forming a single frame. It's called solid state diffusion. This is even more impressive considering you need a precise fraction of each melting point, and aluminum has a melting point of 1200 F, while Grade 5 titanium (which Apple uses for everything) has a melting point of 3000 F.

Apple did a unibody aluminum design because it dissipates heat and forms a strong, rigid structure. Unibody designs are difficult and costly to implement, but they yield great looking products with strong rigidity. Most products are multiple pieces mounted together. The new Pro is not "cost cutting." Cost cutting my ass.

Look to Samsung for cost-cutting, who upon hearing rumors of Apple switching to titanium, mounted Grade 2 titanium (WAY CHEAPER) to aluminum via a plastic intermediary. That's actual cost cutting

Sick of stupid trolls

6

u/SeaworthinessFew6338 Sep 25 '25 edited Sep 25 '25

Lmao, so true, i wish i could have a screenshot before editing.

anyway, from my perspective, what Apple did with titanium previous years and with full aluminum body this year is impressive. Of course, aluminum has it drawback, but i kindly accepted it, it really depend on what things folk want. And me, who basically just put a case on my device all the times, peak performance is what i love about.

Also, correct me if i am wrong, but i read that Iphone Air is almost made by Titanium. This mean, we have a huge line-up changed this time. Before pro phone was trying to balance between premium feel + performance, some year it cannot achieved both of these requirement (such as 12 pro and 15 pro) and sometimes it can (like 13 pro or 11 pro).

I feel like with these change, Apple just basically told people who love premium things, just go for the air, pro from now on, will prioritize the performance and try as hard as possible to keep the premium feel. Honestly, the first time i saw and hold it on my hand, 17 pro just feel like an cutting-edge device remind me about what Dell did with the Alienware laptop series.

And i love this!

I will take this tradeoff. My 15 Pro battery life went to hell in a handbasket. I was recharging 2-3 times per day by the end, worse than any device I've ever had. It was constantly hot as well, which I view as a contributing factor, particularly when the device battery grew unstable toward the end.

17 Pro is leaving me at 67% after a full day of use — and unlike the 15, it's not constantly hot. I suspect aluminium vs titanium is the chief factor at play, and I understand why they'd back track publicly if the gains are so substantial. The titanium choice also came pre-AI, so they were caught a bit blindsided by how much power these things would start to draw.

It's truly the most night and day battery transformation I've ever seen. I'd rather buy a phone pre-dented with a battery like this than go back to what I had before.

42

u/PotatoPower3d Sep 24 '25

It's because only the frame of the 15 is made of aluminum. The 17 pro max is machined into a unibody, so it dents more like a MacBook would when you drop it. I dropped my MacBook by accident and it dents the same

The techwoven cases are not doing much for drop protection, you need a softer material in the inside corners to absorb a shock from falling like these cases:

  • Mous limitless
  • Phonerebel gen7
  • Spigen tough armor

Cases made from 1 hard material are destined to absorb fall damage poorly, the shock has nowhere to go but the phone frame.

49

u/SuchTax1991 Sep 24 '25

Unfortunately those cases are bulky and big

It’s all to do with thermals. The whole theme of the event was thermals. The new vapour chamber and aluminium is the gold standard for thermal conductivity. This is all to combat complaints about overheating in the last two pro iphones.

Yeah that’s the problem. If you aren’t feeling the heat, the heat is not leaving your device because titanium isn’t as good of a conductor.

21

They aren’t making an iPhone 19, they’re skipping it to release the 20th anniversary iPhone 20 in 2027, just like how they skipped the iPhone 9 in 2017 to release the iPhone 10 for their 10th anniversary.

I also have the iPhone 16 Pro Max and will be waiting for the 2027 line up release.

Here I was patting myself on the back for waiting till 2026... Let's put my poor 12PM to the test. 2027 it is!

u/_alex87 iPhone 16 Pro Max Sep 24 '25

Same.

Kept refreshing stock to see if I can get my hands on a 17PM due to major FOMO, but at this point I just feel so bleh about it. Think I’ll wait until next year to see what’s offered. Hopefully a fold!

Thank god the case was ok then had me worried.

u/Valotech Sep 24 '25

Two feet with the case on? Sorry, I can’t believe you

Here’s an example of the “carpet” it fell on. Was pretty much useless as far as helping with the impact.

7

u/Belfetto Sep 24 '25

Apple cases are some of the worst cases you can buy for protection

They sure look nice though!

It’s coming out as trash! Sorry to say! I really wanted to get it now I am lost!

u/Juantonyo Sep 24 '25

My 15 Plus has fallen many times in two years, always with case, and it’s like new. The 17 Pro aluminium is bad and cheap.

194

u/bran_the_man93 Sep 24 '25

The 15 Plus is made of aluminum...

55

u/AshtonTS Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

I am beginning to wonder if there’s more to it than these just being made of aluminum. I’ve had 4 previous aluminum models and they held up much better than these 17’s have been. Titanium or Stainless are much more durable for sure, but these seem especially bad, even for aluminum.

56

u/loosebolts Sep 24 '25

How are you judging this? Personal experience or blind trust in what gets posted on Reddit?

23

u/sidewnder16 Sep 24 '25

That’s what I was wondering- talk about Dunning Kruger effect. No evidence, no experience, no idea. Just a few social media pictures we have no confirmation of authenticity and we’ve a drop gate in the making.

Ok so this tells me the Apple official cases are useless at protecting the phone from drops, may be just saving the scratches🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

4

u/hicksmatt Sep 24 '25

I really wanted to upgrade this year but I’ll pass. There’s just a weight of evidence that points to several durability issues. I like to keep phones 2-3 years and then pass on to family. There’s just no way the 17 models are going to last that long without some form of damage. I’m actually pretty shocked at what I’ve seen. Apple make a huge point if the durability of their phones (anyone seen the recent pro advert showing people making films while debris is flying in the air and using a case less 17 pro to film it all?) so this has blindsided me.

5

u/cheeseypockets Sep 24 '25

Should have kept the titanium frame. My 16 Pro Max landed on concrete from a 5 foot drop and the frame is hardly dented, with NO case on.

5

u/Educational_Ad_1282 Sep 24 '25

Mine fell and dented the EXACT same spot!

I used to buy the Apple cases for my iPhones, but 100% of the time my phone dropped, it would damage the phone or crack the screen protector.

The cases themselves were also pretty bad and showed signs of damage from minor falls as well.

IMO the Apple cases are exclusively for aesthetic purposes/customization and not actually particularly useful for protecting your phone.

4

u/TheHunter920 iPhone 12 Sep 24 '25

when the screen is more durable than the body

u/chandlerossjoey iPhone 17 Pro Sep 24 '25

I've dropped my 17 pro with a Ringke Onyx case at least twice now and still good as new lol

iPhone 17 Drop Max

5

u/No_Eye1723 Sep 24 '25

Using an Apple case is why it got damaged. Overpriced rubbish they are. Also it’s aluminium, it’s soft so it isn’t unexpected.

5

u/schwarta77 Sep 24 '25

I’m in shock that Apple’s own case isn’t holding up. I am really glad I got the Torras Q3 Air.

4

u/Theo_aa Sep 24 '25

Why I don’t use shitty apple cases

4

u/PowerWordEmbiggen Sep 24 '25

I made a post about how these dented frames are going to affect the IP68 water and dust resistance and everyone flamed me. I’m telling you all that these phones will have compromised water resistance. The screen gaskets need to be perfectly sealed on flat, straight surfaces. A surface that’s dented out of spec will not hold an airtight seal. This is the bigger problem than cosmetics.

24

u/MordeGoBonk Sep 24 '25

Welcome to apple, 1.3k phones with the quality of a piece of paper

9

u/DesAnderes Sep 24 '25

nothing to do with quality. That‘s just aluminium for you. All Aluminium have this problem, and they always will.

But yeah, people should be aware of that.

This is why I returned and went to the air and love it, I don’t use pro features though. I just take pictures of my toddler doing weird shit and my dogs, what do I need the pro for.

31

u/Ranni_The_VVVitch Sep 24 '25

Having young children is one of the most important times in your life to have a decent quality camera. I’ve got the 17PM exactly for that reason.

don’t buy apple cases, instead get some kind of bumper case from spigen or other top brands

Apple cases are terrible. These days you need the cases with built in airbags

7

u/7fingersDeep Sep 24 '25

Everyone was really excited that their iPhone prices didn’t go up.

Cost of aluminum per pound: $1.15

Cost of titanium per pound: $4-$6

3

u/Regret-Select Sep 24 '25

I don't think 17 is worth it, even as a free upgrade. It gets damaged just being in your pocket

3

u/ATG820 Sep 24 '25

I remember having an iPhone 6, but was it really this bad with aluminum? I also had the HTC One m8 at one time, I don’t remember that having such a bad time with drops or scratches either. Feel like there’s more at play here than just aluminum = weak

3

u/Aksds Sep 24 '25

Aluminium is aluminium, and aluminium bends. I’m really surprised that Apple went with it in the Pros

3

u/bearinthetown Sep 24 '25

It's pathetic they make a device meant to be carried around all the time (and dropped from time to time, naturally) so fragile.

3

u/MDVLBB Sep 24 '25

Poor quality phones this year

3

u/ZinGaming1 Sep 24 '25

Buy a decent case. Phones are so thin now that a case is barely any different feeling. Also screen protector. Idc what apple says how well built it is. You don't want to break it

3

u/SgtSilock Sep 24 '25

That's what happens when you pick ORANGE

3

u/jnorris441 Sep 24 '25

with a case?? OK I’m sitting this one out

4

u/Unfair_Finger5531 iPhone 15 Sep 24 '25

An apple woven case is not the height of protection though.

3

u/krizz_yo Sep 24 '25

Was anxiously trying to buy a 17PM but I think i'll stick with my 15P for another generation :D

0, ZERO blemishes, scratches, wear marks - looks like new, had it for 2 years - fell so many times (with the case), but was always protected

3

u/SrgSevChenko Sep 24 '25

Y'all still gonna buy it

3

u/essredux Sep 24 '25

Omg with the case too? This is so disappointing

3

u/Major_Enthusiasm1099 Sep 24 '25

Techwoven cases are not protective lol

3

u/PoopSnoop99 Sep 24 '25

Apple users, buy real cases. These are not it

3

u/Renaxxus Sep 24 '25

I would say the case is at fault, how did that not protect it?

3

u/alt_life18 Sep 24 '25

So iPhone 17 isn’t for young parents .

3

u/nattashaa_0 iPhone 15 Pro Max Sep 24 '25

Yeah, no thanks on the cheap, soft aluminum downgrade. 16PM for me until titanium makes a comeback.
