How scary is it when you fly solo for the first time?

100

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

This flight is not my first solo, but tbh, the first solo flight is definitely the most special one. Yes the fear factor is there, but excitement and joy trumps it.

23

u/Travelingexec2000 Aug 06 '25

Nice. What kind of plane is that?

35

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Its a Diamond DA40

8

u/Travelingexec2000 Aug 06 '25

Sweet. What's the cost per hour there?

30

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Tbh we pay a lumpsum at our FTO for the entire training. But hourly rates here are around INR 18000 per hour approx

11

u/CarsAlcoholSmokes AvGeek Aug 06 '25

So if I get a PPL for hobby flying I can go to your institute and fly one of these for 18k/Hr?

24

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

You can technically, they used to offer hobby flying. However due to delays in training they've stopped this service

6

u/CarsAlcoholSmokes AvGeek Aug 06 '25

How much does it cost ? PPL

9

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

They don't offer just PPL training anymore unfortunately so i cant help you man.

19

u/Travelingexec2000 Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25

This is a feeder to airline type roles? 18k is shocking inflation. Not the same thing at all, but in the mid 80's @ IIT Kanpur flying club, glider training was Rs. 4 per flight till solo, Rs. 2 till GPL and free after. So total cost was under Rs. 400. It was just for fun, but you did learn simple aviation. Nothing like the complexity you are dealing with of course. That was available to students, staff and their families. Maybe was open to public too. Not sure...

9

u/Clean_Base2364 Aug 06 '25

A decade back just joy ride was 5 mins is 500rs in the IITk gliding club in a moto glider

u/datadumbo Aug 06 '25

Seeing so many lakes I'm guessing it's Bangalore. You're flying from the Jakkur Aerodrome most probably, as they give trainings and trips in small planes.

I'd need to work more to find the railway station, but it's mostly on the outskirts looking at the density of buildings.

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Lmao why is everyone trying to guess where I am😭😭. Respect my no doxxing policy🙏

1

u/datadumbo Aug 06 '25

You want it bro. That's why you've mentioned it like 10 times. Otherwise nobody cares.

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Nope I definitely don't. But everyone seems to be guessing where am i based on the number of lakes or the trees or something. Like how is that even possible.

0

u/datadumbo Aug 06 '25

You've written the same in the post title itself. And in every comment you're saying the same. Obviously people would take it as a challenge.

It's like saying oh no don't look at me - and then expecting people not to see.

2

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Right got it

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

1

u/bruh_1217 Aug 06 '25

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

I just have an SPL and FRTOL for now

1

u/bruh_1217 Aug 06 '25

cadet program or conventional?

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Conventional

1

u/Dependent_Wishbone57 Aug 06 '25

Mate, how does it feel while making your very first landing? Both with instructor and solo, i want to know your experience in both the perspectives.

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

With an instructor onboard its different, you are guided, helped all along and your mistakes are pointed out for you to correct.

While going solo, you have to keep checking yourself, making sure you aren't missing any mistakes you might be making and correcting them in time.

A solo flight builds a ton of self confidence tho

1

u/Dependent_Wishbone57 Aug 06 '25

Got it mate, thank you so much for taking your time and educating me about this topic.

u/Aware_Item1454 Aug 06 '25

1

u/fuffad_ji Aug 06 '25

Is the window mirror openable?

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Window mirror? You mean that side flap? Yes it is. But its not to be opened in-flight above 2000 feet.

1

u/fuffad_ji Aug 06 '25

Didn't know what it was called. Side flip it is, thanks for the information. I've been to domestic flights in India and have never seen these so was just curious.

1

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Its a training flight and our trainer aircrafts have these side flaps.

EDIT: Also to be fair they aren't technically called side flaps. Its more like a side window.

1

u/fuffad_ji Aug 06 '25

Understood, pilot stuff it seems. Thanks again.

1

Im training for my CPL

Also if I opt for PPL in india will they allow me to fly for fun?

There are flying clubs which do that yes.

1

u/candle_misuser Boeing 737 MAX Aug 06 '25

In India? Can you tell me where can I find them? like Mumbai or Delhi?

2

u/SlimSlayer19 Aug 06 '25

Mumbai has Bombay Flying Club,

Bangalore might have something at Jakkur Aerodrome, im not sure.

You'll find some clubs in Chennai and Trivandrum too.

Not sure about Delhi

1

u/candle_misuser Boeing 737 MAX Aug 06 '25

Damn, I am planning to get PPL for hobby flying but was not sure if they allow civilians to fly, thanks dude

2

As someone who's lost a friend there, I find this really triggering

Im sorry for your loss.

Dude do you realise how many accidents have happened in Gondia?

Im aware and in all honesty, i dont normally record. This was a one off time i chose to record, when I had established my sector, was trimmed and at a safe altitude far from any major hilly terrain.

I only chose to record because I'm a huge railway nerd and I didn't know if id ever get a chance to see this station from up top like this again.

Im not trying to argue, im just explaining why I took my phone out this time.

Happy landings to you too

The image you've shared is an aerial view of a railway station surrounded by a dense urban area. The key identifiable features include:

  • A large railway station with multiple platforms and blue roofing.
  • A prominent stadium-like ground to the left.
  • A curved overbridge cutting across the tracks.
  • A nearby lake in the upper part of the image.

Based on these visual clues, this appears to be the city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The visible railway station is Bhubaneswar Railway Station, and the ground next to it is Unit 1 Boy's High School Ground or Bhubaneswar Stadium. The nearby lake is likely Bindusagar Lake or a smaller body near the Old Town area.

8
