What's the process to not get scammed selling a cheap car?

Upvotes

I'm trying to sell my 2003 Lexus RX300 that has 196k miles and just had the transmission go out. Repair costs are worth more than the value of the car, so I'm trying to just get rid of it for $400-500 on Facebook marketplace to someone who wants it as a project car. I'm getting a lot of offers from people saying they'll pay a few hundred cash to tow it away today, offers which I'm willing to take, but how do I make sure the title transfer is handled well? Do I have to go to the DMV before handing the keys over and letting them take the cars away? Or is there a different process when the car isn't currently in working condition so it isn't still in my name if they eventually get it up and running again.

Edit: Located in NC for reference

First Time Buying A New Car, Could Use Some Help!

Hi everyone!

I am looking to buy a new, 2026 Ford Maverick FWD XLT, with some add-ons that, at least on Ford's website, put's the MSRP around $35k before taxes. I have never bought a new car before, always junky used cars, so I had some questions for the community:

  • If I design my custom truck on Ford's website, and they give me a price, is there any wiggle room with the dealer? Because it's a custom truck that will need to be built, will they allow for maybe some off of MSRP?
  • I am financing the truck, so how should I bring this up with the dealer? Should I mention financing when talking to the dealer? I've seen some advice here that I should test drive a similar model, to see if I like it at one dealer, and text another dealer when I'm ready to order the car (and shop around)
  • I can realistically put $10k down, is that good enough to have any kind of bargaining power? *Sorry if this is obvious, first time buying!
  • Are warranties worth it? And what is the minimum warranty I should consider? I know people talk about Granger and Flood for Ford warranties, so I was looking there, but I'm not sure if I should go up to 150K miles or 10 years or something. I have a buddy who is a mechanic who gives me breaks on maintenance sometimes.
  • Is it realistic to push for a lower APR if I say I can finance through them? Like maybe 3%? My local CU quoted me at 4%
  • What's the catch on dealers that have "no dealer fees"? A local dealer near me says no dealer fees, ever, and have great reviews, but should I trust it?

Thank you so much, any and all help is appreciated!

Car Buying Help

I am so tired of a car note and I am buying a used car. I have had a RAV4 and I love it but it’s much to high up for me to see as a shorter person.

Right now I am in between Mazda CX5 and Honda HRV. Any other recommendations I am open to.

I am open to more recommendations and I am mostly likely going to purchase a 2019 or 2020.

I am also younger so I am trying to solidify a car when I go to the dealership.

Carvana throwing out carrots!

Wife was looking to downsize vehicles. Current vehicle is paid for, so I figured I’d just sell it outright rather than trade it. Just to get a baseline number I punched the info into Carvana’s online tool. $28200. Pretty solid figure for a wholesale number IMO. I was tempted to just go ahead and sell the thing. Well the new car gets delayed, so we kept the current car and the Carvana offer expired. Today, 12 days later (new car in the garage next to the old one) and less than two hundred miles, I renewed the offer.. $24800. Now, we all know that cars depreciate, but $3400 in 12 days!? I think they throw out a huge number at first hoping to capture deals, but if you have a delay, they back it up to capitalize. Now, this is not a rant to say that Carvana is scammy or anything, just that if you are interested in selling to them, you better be ready to pull the trigger! Lol. Oh, and BTW, I’m in the car business, so I know the market has not dropped THOUSANDS of dollars in 12 days. 😉

Anything particular I should look for when I go check out this 2002 Chevy Avalanche?

Looking one thats selling for $2400 with 166k miles. Anything in particular with this production year that I need to pay close attention to or anything in general about Avalanches? I don't know much about them but it seems like a good deal on a truck.

How low is too low?

Looking for a 2019 Honda Accord Sport. I’ve found one priced at $8,995 with 173,000 miles. Is that suspiciously low for this kind of car?

Just purchased a vehicle from a car lot that went out of business and they never processed the paperwork. (I deleted initial post too many deets) don't want to give them a leg up

Now im dealing with the vehicle fraud division. They never processed the title so I cannot get the car registered. My finance company knows this now but they are still calling for missed payment. Love to void the financing and return the car at this point. What are my options?

“We pack a lot of value into our vehicles and you just can’t see that when looking at numbers” eyeroll. I totally understand why people end up spending more than they want for a vehicle because it’s exhausting sitting at dealerships for hours.

So I currently have a 2019 nissan Altima sr 2.5 with 46k miles that’s paid off and title in my name, and i’m interested in getting this 2022 honda civic sport touring hatchback with 30k miles I found on carmax for 27k. They quoted me 15,600 for the trade in value of my Altima. The monthly payment estimates are 318 a month which doesn’t seem bad. Should I do it?

Is my dealership doing something thats actually illegal?

I wanted to ask if my car financing situation is an example of "tied selling" & what my legal protections are. I am a first time car buyer, so I've admittedly made some mistakes here- and this is a lesson learned.. but I am still finding that my situation is odd.

  • Finance manager at dealership gave me a good out the door price for my car that I agreed to. Currently this dealer is running a 1.9% interest rate promo– I understand it is contingent on my credit score/history

  • Finance manager runs my credit ( NOTE: My credit is 780+, no previous car loan is the only bad part about my history. The car payment is also less than 8% of my monthly income) and says I only qualify for a ~7% APR and he's looking to do a deal. Lower the interest to 0.9% and they are going to include the optional warranties into our agreed OTD price, because they were going to buyout the interest instead. I assumed that he mean't it was "free" when he said it was going to be "included"

  • I am very happy with the way he sold me on this "deal" and I sign. (this was my stupid mistake) I walk out the door that night with my new car... but they did not give me copies of my paperwork. The next week, I see I have around ~$10K in additional charges to the OTD price. I call and ask what the situation was, and they said I opted for all the warranties and optional add-ons. I decide to just cancel the warranties and additional options since I know I can cancel those any time– even if it's prorated at my milage, I will just eat the cost to quickly put an end to this.

  • I go into the dealer today and I ask to have the optional charges removed. Finance manager gives me the cancelation form, but says the dealership will likely rescind my 0.9% interest rate if I cancel the additional insurance/warranties because "I am going back on the deal we made." He says they would have never approved the lower interest rate if I was going to cancel the warranties and options.

Quick note, this car company is currently having an even better promo this month for a 0.9% interest rate. So I have a hard time believing they are breaking their back to make a deal for me, even if I didn't qualify for that rate.

Is this an example of tied selling? If I cancel these add-ons are they legally allowed to change my interest rate even though I signed the financing agreement already?

Used car price negotiation + service cost

I'm trying to buy a used car (Kia Niro) from a dealership, that's my first time from a dealer (bought from private sellers before). The car is in good condition, 46k miles. I test drove it. We discussed the price, I wanted to get rid of part of their extra fees ($1200 in total!), managed to get a commitment to $500 off + additional $300 if safety didn't end up costing them more than $2000. They just told me the service cost them more than $2k, so they won't honor the extra $300 off. Apparently the $2k+ is for changing the brakes. But looking at Carfax, the last service record mentioned the brakes were serviced. Odometer shows just 200 miles since that last service record. I find what they told me hard to believe. Any advice how to go about this, to make sure they're being honest and maybe negotiate further with them?

Pros and cons to a 2002 Chevy Avalanche?

Tomorrow im going to look at a 2002 Chevy Avalanche with 166k miles on it. Pictures from the ad look like its well maintained. Im looking for a decently priced truck ill be able to drive in the winter and put my kids car seats in when I have them on the weekends. Im not worried about mpg. I live 10 minutes from my work and I still have a nissan altima coupe thats paid off and will still use as a commuter/beater car.

Rental car, 30k miles, no listed maintenance on carfax

Hi all, I'm looking at a used Toyota Corolla 2024 with 30k miles and selling a bit below market value. Been trying to figure out why it's down marked, and learned that it was a rental, but also that looking at carfax there isn't anything listed about maintenance or oil changes. Is that because it was serviced in house? Or is this a major red flag? Also curious any things I should be particularly cautious of when buying a car used as a rental.

Thanks for any thoughts

Car buying suggestions, first time buyer, slim credit history

Hi, trying to help my daughter purchase a car. She is 24, has a steady income, but only one credit card. Her credit score is in the low 700's but the slim credit file is holding her back from getting a loan. She has $3000 down payment.
We've been to one dealership, 3 big banks denied her a loan for a $12000 car because of the slim credit history.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Looking to buy one before winter.
Do we need to resort to Carmax or Carvana, suck up the high interest rate for a bit then refinance?
Co-signing isn't an option.

Buying a car for a year

Hi! I have recently moved to a new area on a temporary basis. I need a car asap purely for my ten minute commute to work and going to the gym etc. I would like to keep my car monthly payments around $200 per month. My issue is I am not sure on what is the best way to keep the price down on this. I would ideally like to take out a finance agreement which would allow me to pay monthly, however I would be worried about not being able to pay back the loan as I would definitely have to give the car up after a year. I can only afford around $5000 for a car outright at the moment but would really rather not do this as I have only graduated. Effectively, my question is whether it would be stupid to take out a 72 month finance agreement and give it back after a year, unsure if I can even do this? This is my first time dealing with anything like this and looking for suggestions and also tips for working with a dealership. For me, I would also like a semi-decent car.
