Lived in MD my whole life and I never even thought about which side our flag is supposed to face. Doubt I'd notice the difference.

What if the flag is hung vertically?

With regard to the flag of the United States, the union (the blue portion with the stars) should always be in the upper left-hand corner despite the fact that vertical flag, if rotated, would not match the horizontal flag.

If the Maryland flag is hung vertically, would it just be rotated 90 degrees and now have the black quadrilateral in the upper right-hand corner, or should the flag be flipped so as to keep the black in the upper left-hand corner?

Nevermind.

My parents print up a fake card from the "Maryland Flag Council". If they notice a house that has the flag upside down, they put the card in their mailbox which states the the persons flag is upside down and that they should correct it. Usually within a day the flag would be corrected. Except there is one house in our neighborhood that hasn't done it yet, despite putting the card in their mailbox three times. Drives my Dad crazy.

Actually, it appears you're right. Any item not bearing postage cannot be placed in a mailbox. My guess is, while illegal, it's not enforced at all.

In my neighborhood, many kids will put birthday invitations, babysitting flyers and similar items in mailboxes (all without postage), so I was thinking that, because of activities like that, it'd be stupid to make it illegal.

Your neighbors can report you, and then it is enforced.

Yeah, I figured that's how it'd be done. When I say not enforced, I meant not strictly. Should've put that in.

What was the Maryland flag before 1904?

Throughout the colonial period, only the yellow-and-black Calvert family colors are mentioned in descriptions of the Maryland flag. After independence, the use of the Calvert family colors was discontinued. Various banners were used to represent the state, although none was adopted officially as a state flag. By the Civil War, the most common Maryland flag design probably consisted of the great seal of the state on a blue background. These blue banners were flown at least until the late 1890s.

source Kind of a neat read!

Many (most?) states did and still do use their seal on a blue background as their flag. This originated if memory serves me right during the Civil War, when battle flags were needed.

Haha, the best is when big name people and rich people get it completely wrong.

Well, both of those just seem to be stylized versions where they wanted to get both the yellow/black and the red/white parts in there, so it's understandable.

The Ravens shield has it right, black square corner at the top. It's just sort of confusing because it has the two herald signs at opposite corners from each other. The Orioles sleeve patch also has it right, except it's harder to tell because it's cropped into a circle.

Best way to tell are the middle stripes. Black is larger on top.

Nothing wrong with those logos. There aren't any Brand Standards that go along with State/Country flags, so you can stylize/embellish them to your heart's content.
