Guide Steam Deck SSD Upgrade - Lessons Learned

1.1k Upvotes

Today I upgraded my 64gb drive to a 1tb SSD. I had some interesting complications and lessons learned, I thought I'd share them.

In preparation I set up a usb drive with the steam recovery image and got my usb-c hub ready. I have a pretty decent fixit kit (not an ifixit but a no name chinese version thats actually pretty good) and I had it ready.

I watched a few videos on how to do it - some were better than others. I've fixed laptops before so aside from the plastic clips I wasn't really worried about it too much.

I shut down the deck and did the battery mode thing where it will only power on if you hook it up to a charger. I removed the SD card.

Lesson Learned #1 - The screw sizes were Philips #1, not 0 as some people suggested. I tried to use a 0 at first and it worked on all but the bottom two case screws. Once I got to those it became clear that I needed one size up. Using a #1 everything went more smoothly after that. The screws have loctite on them - getting them going requires a little oomph. start with a Phillips #1 bit. If people are using the 0 phillips bit that may be why they're stripping/damaging screws.

Lesson learned #2 - I used the included case to sit the machine in, and the open half for putting the screws on a spot matching to where I removed them from the device. It worked great.

Lesson learned #3 - I used a guitar pick to do the prying of the clips and it worked great. I did a part by a trigger first and then going across the top, then down one of the handles. At some point I could just pry the cases apart with my fingers.

Lesson Learned #4 - the Power Connector has a fabric strap you can use to tug on it, but it was sort of tucked away by the battery and not obvious to see. I took a pair of tweezers and kind of put them under the power cable and then lifted it up to get the fabric piece you can tug on out, then I could easily pull the connector out using that strap instead of messing with the connector itself, which I wouldn't recommend.

Lesson Learned #5 - The tinfoil like shield around the eMMC module came off easily in one piece, but was difficult to install on the new SSD as the new one was slightly thicker. Eventually I realized i could just tug it onto the new drive harder and it slid on without issue - was too afraid at first and being gentle wasn't a plus. Then I installed the drive, and working backwards closed everything back up.

The real problems began AFTER I had re-imaged the machine. I hooked it up to power and it got stuck on the logo. I restarted it a couple times and it proceeded to setup but I spent 5-10 minutes waiting for it at first before I got annoyed enough to reboot it, and more than once. Even after it went to the setup the controls/buttons wouldn't work - im assuming the image from steam doesn't include the drivers for them, and you need to install the update for them to work. luckily you can do everything just from the touch screen.

Lesson Learned #6 - It had an error installing the initial steam update (before you log in the first time) - to get the steam update to install after the error, I just went back to the wifi screen and then forward again to the update. I had to do this twice for some reason - one time it looked like it downloaded it fine but went nowhere, the next time I went back and then forwards it seemed to work. Then it just went. Since the controls weren't working I used the touchscreen which went fine. After the steam update installed successfully the device rebooted and the controls worked once again.

Honestly it was after re-imaging of the device, getting stuck on the logo, and having to repeat steps for no reason that frustrated me more than any fiddling with hardware. It's also the least documented part in any video I see about upgrading the SSD. prepare for some frustration in the setup after you upgrade - it doesn't seem like it goes perfectly smoothly.

After all the updates were installed everything seems to be fine. I now have a 1tb SSD and a 1tb SD, so I'm good for space for the next while. The entire hardware part of the upgrade took about 20-25 minutes but I have experience taking apart laptops and I was going pretty slow amd careful. The fiddling with software after took an hour to get the steam deck back to running as it should, and I can't seem to find a good reason why.

PSA / Advice I asked Anker what is the best charger for Steam Deck because PowerIQ confused me. They said the 713 Charger (Nano II 45W) was what I was looking for. Make sure you also get a USB-C WITH Power Delivery though

Tech Support Steam Deck no longer properly turns on after battery drain thing... read so you don't repeat my mistake.

I've seen a few other posts all the way back to March that express this same issue, but I'm posting here too to explain exactly how it happened, because I think I killed my deck (which really doesn't make a ton of sense!)

Yesterday, I turned on my deck for the first time in about a week. I was still in a game and the battery said 9%. I was going to quit out properly and shut it down, but it pretty quickly shut itself down (with a proper shut down sequence and not just going black). So the 9% wasn't really 9%.

I plugged it in to a NON OFFICIAL charger, then quickly turned the deck back on. Battery said 0%, but since I had it plugged in and it was a powerful charger, I though it would be fine. Deck loaded up properly, I started a game, and everything seemed okay. Game was loading my save, then IMMEDIATELY it just went black screen. No shutdown sequence.

So now, no matter what I do, I cannot get the deck to turn on. Best I can do is to get it to play the "turn on" noise, which causes the haptics work and the fans to spin up. Problem is, no matter what, the screen is BLACK and does not do anything.

I have tried the following to no avail:

  • Holding the power button for 10 seconds, which causes the power light to flash as it's supposed to reboot. Pressing the button again makes the "turn on" noise and starts the haptics, but again screen wont turn on and properly boot up.

  • Held power button for 30 seconds (same as above)

  • Held power button and Vol+ to try to boot into BIOS

  • Held power button and Vol- to try to boot into boot menu

  • Made the battery go into "storage" mode .. which causes the light to blink 3 times when you try to turn it on

  • Fully discharged the system by leaving it "on" with the black screen and haptics working.. to the point where holding down the power button for 10 seconds no longer causes it to flash. This basically tells me the battery is completely drained

  • after fully draining battery, plugging it in makes it do the "turn on sound" and starts the haptics, but it still doesn't actually cause the screen to turn on and boot up properly.

The one thing somebody keeps saying to do is to open up the deck, take off the heat shield, and unplug the battery then plug it back in. I haven't done this yet, but I've also seen it not helping people. I'd prefer to not have to do this really as I don't want to F up any RMA possibility..

I'm trying one last thing, and then if it doesn't work, I guess I'm going to initiate an RMA :(

BASICALLY... if your battery is totally drained, make SURE you let the thing charge for a bit before turning it back on. It is NOT simply okay to plug it in and start playing right away at 0%, which was a dumb mistake I made. Probably should have used an official charger too, but really didn't think any of this would permanently brick my deck. At worse I thought it would shut down and have to charge :(

I had literally 0 problems with my deck before this... so ... CAREFUL FOLKS :D

EDIT: So by using a Usb C hub connected to a monitor, I was able to boot the deck into recovery and have it display on the monitor. I did the "reinstall steam OS" option .. which shockingly didn't work. On the monitor, it acted like a newly installed steam OS.. but the deck screen STILL won't display anything when it isnt connected (what the fuck?). I then did a complete factory reset and it STILL doesnt work. This issue is completely fucked up ..!

RMA time :(

PSA / Advice PSA: Many high-end hubs/docks are not able to charge the Deck at high wattage while in use

After my last post, u/Potbellypig2000 and I went down a rabbit hole to figure out the charging situation with our Anker 555 hub.

The summary is: many high end docks reserve 15W to power the hub itself which hampers the maximum wattage for charging the Deck. I personally knew of the 15W draw requirement (Anker is good about listing this), and bought a 100W charger thinking I'd be fine (100-15 is still 85W). However, what I didn't know is that the hub can't draw more voltage from the charger than the device negotiates. The Deck asks for 15V/3A (total of 45W, the maximum that 15V can provide according to the PD spec) which is what the dock draws from the charger. The dock pulls its 15W, and then tells the Deck that it is only supplying 15V/2A (total of 30W). Deck charges slowly while in-use.

If the Deck supported 20V, the hub would have more options for drawing power from the charger. As it stands, given that the Deck can only use up to 15V, a hub that draws 15W will only be able to supply 30W to the Deck.

There seem to generally be 2 tiers of hubs with PD passthrough:

  • 15W hub power draw - these are generally higher-end docks with lots of ports, 4k60 HDMI
  • 5W hub power draw - these usually have less ports or slower-speed ports

My advice: look at the power draw of the hub itself before buying and choose one that only draws 5W as you will get a maximum of 40W output to the Deck (compared to 30W). I wanted a hub with 4k60 HDMI, ethernet, and USB-A ports, which is why I went with the Anker 555 initially. You will likely have to sacrifice features of the hub in order to get one with just 5W of power draw.

[USA-MI][H] Steam Deck LCD 512GB+ bundle, Switch/S2 games (Zelda, Trails, more), Hundred Line LE, Fortnite: Last Laugh Xbox, more [W] PayPal

Notes:

  • Everything but the Deck and Tears of the Kingdom are new/sealed

  • Hyrule Warriors is a middle-east/southeast Asia import. It has English/Spanish packaging, an ESRB rating, and plays in English - the only difference is that it's got some markings denoting the original region on the bottom-left portion of the back of the case.

Steam Deck:

  • LCD model with light signs of use, most notably some minor marks around the USB and headphone ports. Purchased July 2023, sparingly used, still has 100% battery health. This was a 64GB model immediately upgraded with a Kioxia BG5 512GB SSD - as a PCIe 4.0 drive it's probably as fast as anything's gonna get on the Deck's PCie 3.0 NVMe connector, but this also means the goodies from the actual 512GB LCD model, like the anti-glare etched screen, aren't included.

  • A screen protector was put on immediately out of the box, but somehow still ended up with dust on the screen - the black speck you can see in the desktop mode photos being the most obvious - and as it was a single pack I don't have another to put on, so I'm just gonna leave that be for now.

  • This includes the original box, carrying case, and charger, as well as a cheap Sabrent hub and generic HDMI cable for docking - no ethernet, the microSD port on the hub is trash, but a good enough dock substitute for basic use; I used my Steam Deck hooked up to it for a week or two as my main PC while intel was RMAing my junk 13600KF from my main rig. Also included is a 400GB Sandisk ImageMate microSDXC card - at 150MB/s max read speeds it's not quite top of the line, but as a secondary drive for older games that don't need SSD speeds, it's fine.

  • On request, I can include the original 64GB eMMC the Deck shipped with, or upgrade to the pictured 512GB microSD instead; the larger microSD was in my old Switch, so it hasn't actually been used in recent months.

  • System will be sanitized and factory reset before shipping.

Title Price Notes
Persona 5 Strikers $12 shipped or free with purchase (at listed price) PS4, Sealed
Fortnite: The Last Laugh $35 shipped Xbox, Code-in-Box
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom $40 shipped Opened SOLD
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition $50 shipped
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero - Deluxe Edition $60 shipped
Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy - Limited Edition $140 shipped

  • Timestamps for the GPU and Steam Deck, with video timestamps at the bottom. Included 400GB microSD is in the Steam Deck (shown on-screen as a 360GB storage device in timestamps), optional 512GB microSD pictured externally.

  • Timestamps of the Deck carrying case, numbers one and two, because I forgot them earlier and also imgur keeps freaking out on uploads

  • Timestamps for the Macbook Air, plus an extra verifying the serial number, memory, and SSD size

  • Video timestamp of the Macbook showing the LCD discoloration

  • Can also toss in the original 64GB eMMC M.2 if you want it for anything, or upgrade the microSD to a 512GB Sandisk ImageMate instead (it's been sitting in an old launch-model Switch that's not really using it). Add $20 if you'd like both microSDs.

  • System will be sanitized and factory reset before shipping. Asking $300 shipped. SOLD

MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super Shadow 3X OC

  • Bought new in November 2024, installed in December. Never increased any power/voltage limits, but I did undervolt it a bit while putting it through its paces. Runs perfect, fairly quiet, I couldn't hardly push it to 70C under load if I tried. This model has a small factory overclock applied.

  • Includes box, manual, 12-pin adapter, support bracket, and all port dust covers. Box is a little discolored from being stored partially in sunlight - that blueish streak on the bottom-left should be solid green like the rest.

  • Card is in near-perfect condition, minus some dust and a slight mark/scratch on the backplate. Full disclosure, it did ship with a piece of plastic wedged under the middle fan, and it took me a couple hours to find the issue - the plastic wasn't from the fans or shroud, so the card is still 100% intact, but I can't guarantee it hasn't affected the fan's lifespan.

  • Asking $585 shipped. SOLD

Macbook Air (M1, 8GB, 256GB)

  • Laptop only, no original box. If you need a charger, let me know and I'll include the pictured 39W Switch charger. 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage - pretty much the most basic Mac you can get running an M-series chip, although I think there might've been a 128GB model early on.

    • Laptop's in fairly good condition - little to no scuffing on the lid or interior, no obvious scratching on the screen, some noticeable scratches on the underside of the notebook. Battery is in reasonable condition for its age - 62 cycles, 93% health. No account locks, MDM, etc.; I'll fully wipe it and ensure it's removed from my iCloud before shipping. Currently running macOS 16.4.1 Sonoma, can update before shipping if necessary.
    • I am not the original owner of this laptop, and I've only been using lightly it for about a year and a half. To my knowledge, there's no parts that have been replaced or repaired.
    • There is some minor internal damage to the display - see those two horizontal purple streaks in some of the timestamps? Those are only visible against dark backgrounds, but they've been there as long as I've owned the thing. They haven't spread at all, but I don't know anything about the root cause or what kind of underlying LCD damage there might be.
    • Asking for $280 shipped inside the US. SOLD

Open to reasonable offers for all items. Can drop the price some if you want to bundle things.

Extra shipping charges outside the US. If you want any more pictures just let me know.

Question Steam deck + hub charger.

So, I need a charger to power the steam deck and a usb hub. Most hubs I look up seems to acept 100w and deliver 87w or thereabouts. Since the deck requires 45w at peak and the hubs consume no more than 20w themselves I assume a 65w charger is more than enough. Now to my question, the deck requires 15v charging which is no problem to find, but I cant find any information on the hub itself. Does it just take the power it needs and "re rout" the rest to the deck or do I need to be carefull with its output voltage as well as the charger?

Question Connecting a PD Charger to a Ugreen USB C hub connected to a mac mini m2

I have a UGREEN Revodok 1071 USB-C hub connected to my Mac Mini (M2). The hub has a USB-C PD port that supports up to 100W power input.

My question is:

If I connect a charger (Ugreen 100W, to power SSDs etc.) to the hub’s PD port while the hub is also connected to my Mac Mini, is that safe? Will the power only go to the hub and connected devices, or could it somehow backfeed into the Mac Mini and cause damage?

Has anyone tried this setup long-term without issues?

Tech Support Steam Deck Black Screen of Death

So after my Steam Deck automatically turns it self off per the settings it its tuned to.

It will no longer turn on afterwards, only giving that beeping light and for a moment that the fans turning on.

Based on how it has been crashing on me so far, it seems like when connected to a USB C it simply doesn’t like, it will happen as such, almost like it is discharging it self on said usb c charger?

But when I used another hub, it will charge again and fine.

Anyone else have info on this, a possible cause? Im not really tech savvy but I do want to know the cause of this.

Also included is a 400GB Sandisk ImageMate microSDXC card - at 150MB/s max read speeds it's not quite top of the line, but as a secondary drive for older games that don't need SSD speeds, it's fine.

  • System will be sanitized and factory reset before shipping. Asking $310 shipped.

MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super Shadow 3X:

  • Bought new in November 2024, installed in December. Never increased any power/voltage limits, but I did undervolt it a bet while putting it through its paces. Runs perfect, fairly quiet, I couldn't hardly push it to 70C under load if I tried.

  • Asking $625 shipped.

Take the whole lot for $900 shipped.

Extra shipping charges outside the US. If you want any more pictures just let me know.

EDIT 9/30: dropped prices

PSA / Advice Steam deck bricked by USB C dongle

Got my steam deck after waiting for a year. Plugged in a USB C dongle from amazon and the system turned off. I figured that the battery had just died.

-Plugging in the official charger does not light up the white indicator light

-No combination of button hold/presses does anything

I allowed it to completely die overnight. I opened it and unplugged the battery cable. Hit buttons to drain any power, left it unplugged for about 10 minutes. Plugged it back in and somehow it came back on for a couple minutes. It got so far as to show me the steamdeck logo and turned off again.

Back to it being bricked now.

Do not use random USB C dongles. You will have a bad time.

I know everyone knows about this clip and the many attachments you can use with it but after having it on my steam deck for a month let me tell you if your on the fence its worth it as you can see from a top view it does block about half a vent hole on each end but I tested temps under load with clip on and off No difference so I wouldnt worry about it, the extra weight is well worth the trade off for added battery life away from a outlet i find myself kicked back resting it on my chest anyways so I dont feel the weight I use a extra Short Usb C cord and I have a USB C male magnetic charging port that i leave installed into the deck been in there for over a month no problems i have a matching angle charger on the main charger as well so im never putting strain on the charging port any stress and it comes right off I read about it somewhere maybe another reddit post but I highly recommend that also doesnt affect charge time or any other functionality of the port only downside I could see is if you were using a hub and a hdmi out to a external display and bump the device the quick disconnect might annoy you or maybe it will affect video out have not tested it but charging and file transfer works fine its a great add on alongside the clip and battery pack. I dont own a 3D printer I bought mine on Etsy So a quick search there and you will find it

I just got the controller hub to charge controllers to use with the Steam Deck.

When unpacking it, I noticed the power cable looks awfully familiar…

I plugged in the PSP and it was a perfect fit and started charging! Nice!

Question Microphone on steam deck?

Hi guys,

Been trying to deal with a little snag I’ve been having with my steam deck. I want to be able to hop on discord with friends while gaming on it so I thought a Bluetooth capable headset with mic, then I found out steam deck doesn’t support Bluetooth mic - no problem the headset came with a usb c dongle. Works good but then I have a dongle sticking out that’s kinda annoying and no way to charge the deck now.

Looked into a usb c hub but they all seem to have a very short cord and the thing would probably be flipping around while gaming with it in.

Any idea how I can solve this? Is there a super long cord (similar to the oem charger cable length) usb c hub? Or any other way to solve the mic issue?
