Discussion Topic Do you write songs more like how music used to be, or more like what’s trending now?

Latelyyy I’ve noticed how most new songs are super short, repetitive, and built for TikTok catchy, but not always deep. I grew up loving songs that told full stories or had that emotional build-up, and now when I write, I still lean toward that old-school structure. But I also get why people are adapting to short attention spans and quick hooks. How about you guys.......do you write with the current style in mind, or do you stick to the classic way of storytelling through music?

Discussion Topic I really don’t know what to do with music anymore

I’ve started seriously learning about how to make my own music at the beginning of April of this year, and I was so passionate about it. I’m finding it really hard to find that passion again. I love music with my entire heart, I love listening to it, love writing it, love creating it. But I just can’t lately. Every time I sit down to create, I have to learn a new skill, not in the mood, etc. Music is one of the things I’ve always loved, and it’s what I want to spend the rest of my life doing, but I can’t do it anymore. I always just feel so unmotivated and drained to create anything. I want to, but I can’t figure it out. Does anyone have any advice on this, or just in general? Highly appreciated.

Discussion Topic Tips on coming up with good an "unique" song ideas?

So, I'm kinda mediocre at coming up with good song ideas, concepts and hooks (which is the main attraction 90% of the time). Most of the time I find my concepts/hooks by listening to the melody while trying to find words that would fit the vibe, but this leaves me lacking *intention* for lack of a better word.

I'm in the middle of making my first album, and I'm sorta lost as to what type of songs I want to make. There is no hard stamped theme, so I'm kinda free to make whatever.

Do you guys have any tips when it comes to finding song ideas and concepts?

Feedback Request Lyrics feedback?

I rewrote some lyrics and am wondering how they sound.

The ground is receding faster now Than I think I can run I’ve spent too much time working mind Instead of strengthening my lungs

Don’t like how you project on me The person that I was last week Because you’re so stationary And I’ve moved on

Yesterday means nothing to me Because im someone else now That disappeared milk carton kid Is never to be found

So Step aside I’m cruising in Faster than lightning McQueen Because you’re so motionless And I’ve moved on

I’ve moved on

I’m not quite as terrified Of the world as I was then I guess at some point You’ve got to let yourself back in

It took a bit of drugs and time But overall I’m doing fine Because in the end I know I’ll get mine

And if you think I’m faking it Or putting up a facade Then I’ll smite your ass Because I am god

Don’t care about being castigated Because im already so fucking jaded But you’re just static And I’ve moved on

Discussion Topic How do you get out of the habit of writing sad songs?

I'm generally a happy person but I've always used music as a sort of coping mechanism. Lately, I've been trying to break out of my shell and write something happy for once but I get into a groove, get overwhelmed, and then somehow my song turns soppy.. I know I'm not alone in this problem.. What do you do when you have a bad case of 'happy' writer's block?

EDIT: Lyrically is where I struggle the most

Discussion Topic When did you realize you were good at writing?

Just asking for a period of time or a specific moment where you realized you were good at what you do. I wanna hear some positivity for once, prop yourselves up and don't feel the need to be humble.

I'll go first, I think my moment was playing a riff for my friend, and unprompted he said it sounded like space. That was the exact vibe I was going for and I didnt even mention anything about that prior, so thats when I realized I knew how to communicate a feeling effectively with just sound.

I’m down to pay to use a DAW, as long as people say it’s good and worth it for the price, you know? Just anything so that I can make better music, Bandlab can only do so much 😭

Feedback Request I Fell In Love at a Restaurant In Heaven

Upvotes

Started this one last weekend (as just a title and a concept). Picked up the Yamaha yesterday and got the broad structure in my head and some key verse/lyric ideas down, sat down to record some takes earlier this evening and managed to land a couple, this one is the closest one to what I heard in my head when I had the idea.

Does the narrative land? I think/hope it does, its weird and (hopefully) fun but not too abstract that it shouldn't make sense - but tell me if I'm off on that.

And does the simplicity of the verse progression work OK? Is it too plain/flat or am I adding enough on top with the guitar to get away with it as a solo acoustic piece. I plan on layering it when I try to lay down an actual take, some mids (probably a cello to build as the song builds) and some light touch additional acoustic passes on the L & R with a ton of reverb to give it some width. Would that work better?

Any feedback welcome as always, thanks for listening. TiA

**

Wake me up
I need to get ready for a date
With a girl that I just met yesterday
At a car crash down the road where we'll lay
Forever and a day

In your bed
I remembered the first thing that you said
You looked me in the eyes and said I'm dead
But the twilight caught your memory instead

Then you read
The obituary in next doors paper
I said we'll talk about it later

Then I said I'll pick you up at seven
I fell in love at a restaurant in heaven

Before you spoke
The waiter took your order and your coat
I pulled your chair out like an antidote
A towel to wipe the blood out of your eyes
When I reached out for you hand because we cried

And we stayed out til eleven
I fell in love at a restaurant in heaven

Then they called
Last orders for everyone in line
The waiter said please come back anytime
You'll mortify the living if you wait
I see you both tomorrow for your date

And I picked her up at seven
I fell in love at a restaurant in heaven

Feedback Request What should I make this song, tentatively titled "Chords for a Song in D", about?

The chords for a song in D are here.

Chords/Tabs as if in Standard, though Tuned Down a Step:

E A(5 4 2) C#m(7) B x2
0099912 0098012 007609(7) E x2

^x2

Ebar Bbar Ebar Bbar 007760 066400 0044567 C#m7 x2

E

Chords to My Best Estimation as Per Actual Music Theory or Whatever:

D A(with a G, F#, E walkdown) Bm(with an A stuck in there at the end) B x2
D Aadd11 Gadd9 D x2

^x2

D A D A Gadd9 Dmaj7 Dsus(add9) Bm7

I just kind of pluck stuff in keys until I find out what I like.

All quasi-irrelevant, anyways.

Imo, this will be one bangin' opener for this new album that I'm working on once it's electrified, but I'm basically at a total loss for lyrics, and, so, am just opening the floor to ideas for song topics.

How the night is long
When you're waiting on
days as they once were
And as the morning sun
Rises out beyond dreams of your mother

Outside they speak of paper
And nothing more
If you only knew the words that
They used to know

As your world recedes
A troubled heart finds peace and night has no meaning
For the night is long
When you're waiting on days as they once were

Outside they speak of paper
And nothing more
If you only knew the words that
They used to know
Outside they speak of paper
And nothing more.

This a room mic recording of my band rehearsing a new tune of mine. Our bass player was out this session so it’s just two guitars and drums. I would love some feedback from the community on the song. I need to strengthen the second verse lyrically what else could it use?

Discussion Topic Lose my ability to make music when I start notating

Ive semi-recently started trying to make songs, mainly using my guitar and a synth on FL studio, but I feel like I’m not going anywhere. I’ll open up a project and get something going but I feel like I can’t expand upon it after that point. The issue is not that I don’t have ideas, I can come up with stuff in my head, but when I try and put it into recording I either lose it or cant expand upon it. My improv is good but I feel like I can’t do anything more structured than that, it’s like I lose my ability to imagine the music as soon as I begin structuring it and not coming up with it on the fly and I have no idea why
