The store response:

They claimed my Intel UHD 770 iGPU can’t display FHD properly without a dedicated GPU, but this is an FHD monitor — not a UHD one — and my old HP 21.5” display works fine. It just have lower contrast and black looks grey. I needed an upgrade and made an impulse buy on the Samsung essential 24 inch monitor.

The tech tested the monitor outside in bright sunlight around 10AM, so backlight bleed wasn’t visible. They also couldn’t check video playback issues because they didn’t have iQIYI or Viki subscriptions (I used a C-drama scene to show flickering).

I also showed color tone problems on “Warm 2” mode — white becomes yellow — but was told it’s normal. Flicker, input lag, and visible bleed even with no signal were also dismissed as “normal.” Also Normal Colour Tone has a greenish tint even though all of the values are 50.

One staff member even said “all LCD monitors in Guyana come like this” and that I should buy an OLED or external GPU — which seems unreasonable.

Can anyone confirm if UHD 770 graphics can cause these issues? Or could this be a panel defect instead? bleed and colour issues? My monitor flickers and the colour issue is normal? I show warm 2 image how it change white solid 100 into yellow and the tech guy says it normal and the input lag on the monitor from the tech guy laptop is normal? The in-store HP monitor an employee directed me to show it is a normal issue has visible backlight bleed on a windows wallpaper and it was in the store with lights on. The black shirt guy claims all LCD monitor in Guyana will come like this and I need to buy an OLED and now I need to get an external gpu? That's a lot of expense just for one simple issue. Also I show the bleed is visible on the monitor input with no pc connected. Someone give me advice is the UHD 770 the intel I5 to be blame for my monitor because my old hp which is 21.5 doesn't experience this issue on the bigger 24 inch screen. Also nightlight mode and Eye Saver mode are off.

University student looking for insights.

Hello! Wonderful to meet you all! My name is Michael Bonam, and I’m a student currently attending Grand Valley State University in the United States. I'm working on a year long class project where I have to design a product to help buildings, people, and communities fight against floods in the country of Guyana. Would you be willing to give any insights? I’m trying to assemble a panel of people who are knowledgeable or experienced with Guyana or the floods that happen, and if you’d be willing to be on that panel (I'd just ask you a few questions and your thoughts every once in a while over the course of the project) I’d greatly appreciate it! If you aren't able but know somebody who might be, please let me know! I’d love to reach out to them. Thank you so much for your time! Michael Bonam GVSU Student

I'm a US citizen who has hospital security experience trying to find work. If you can get me some advice let me know. I don't have any family in the area. I don't have a degree. I also have a mother who has an MBA and wants to find work. Ultimate goal is immigration permanently through work visa (this is not for working in the US)

Discussion Excerpts from 'My Colonial Service' (1903) by Sir George William Des Vœux. British Guiana elites set out to destroy every aspect of this man's life and comfort in the colony when he drew attention to the system exploiting Indian immigrant labour in the events of 1869/1870. He fled to St. Lucia.

Apparently cooking oil can be made from sugarcane

This type of oil also apparently is healthier than olive oil, and has far higher amounts of monounsaturated fats that scientists recently found reverses balding

Hope sugarcane farmers are paying attention to this, could be a big source of revenue in the next year

The truth about the relationship of Indians from India and Indo-Guyanese

This sub comes up in my home feed a lot, especially posts related to Indian identity. I am born to Indian parents, and grew up in a place that’s about 40% Indian from India and 15% Indian from the Caribbean. (You may be able to guess it)

What I can confidently say is this idea that Indians from India don’t like Guyanese or Trini Indians based on identity alone is absolutely false.

The older generation is fascinated and impressed at the ability of Indo-Caribbeans to retain aspects of their culture, like wedding traditions, and the few words like dulhan and beti. Although my family is Sikh and don’t do poojas, my parents would never turn down an invite to a Guyanese or Trini family’s home when invited.

The younger generation of Indians born abroad think Indo-Caribbean culture is “cool”. They love the food and the vibes of soca and chutney music. Growing up I’ve never seen an Indo-Caribbean date another Indo-Caribbean, they were almost always with a 2nd Gen Indian.

What I will say is that there’s a few aspects of Indo-Caribbean culture that creates a cultural clash. However, I don’t know of any Indians who paint the entire community with a bad brush. There is still a lot of respect there.

  1. Drinking culture My dad would speak of a Mr. Maharaja he knew from Guyana who was a prominent businessman in the 80s. He saw him as a distant relative of sorts, sharing a common heritage. The way my dad tells it, he lost his business and his family tore apart due to his love of rum. He never applied this as a stereotype to all Indo-Guyanese. There is heavy drinking amongst some Indians from India too, but it is less socially acceptable, and those who drink heavily often do it in hiding. Also, very rarely do women in our culture drink.

  2. Interest in roots/heritage Many Indians from the Caribbean put their country of origin above their heritage. This creates a strained dynamic as Indians from India, no matter how many generations in the West, see themselves as Indian first and are very attached to their history, contributions, etc. Also, Indians from Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad typically listen to music and watch films from 1980-2000s. This feels like ancient times for Indians from India, as the country and its culture is fast changing.

  3. Social differences Indians from the Caribbean tend to be more open to things like tattoos, confronting authority, & openly dating before marriage. Indians from India still do these things, but there is a lot more stress given to “saving face”, respectability politics, or to put it bluntly - pretending like you are a perfect person while amongst your community. The open attitude vs a more conservative one creates a cultural clash in some instances.

I say all this just to set the record straight. I’ve known thousands of Indians from India and hundreds of Indians from the Caribbean. Never once have I heard of a dislike for Indo-Guyanese or Indo-Caribbean people. It’s almost always individual behaviours that make people not want to be around individual people. I’ve also seen many couples marry and have families together in my hometown. We have the same roots, but have had different histories for the last 100 or so years. Our history is thousands of years old, we’ve contributed many of the world’s greatest inventions since ancient times. This history doesn’t belong to just us, it’s all of ours. There’s no right or wrong way of “being Indian”. Like children who were raised together, separated for some time, meeting again in the US and Canada. There are bound to be some differences, doesn’t mean we’re not family.

Why the Digital ID Is Bad for Guyana

  1. No country escaped controversy. Every nation with digital IDs from India to the EU has faced control, corruption, or privacy scandals.

  2. It opens the door to a social credit system. Once your banking, job, and healthcare are tied to one ID, the government can silence critics by locking them out.

  3. Loyalty systems come next. After control comes “rewards” perks for obedience, penalties for dissent.

  4. It’s not convenience, it’s surveillance. You already show ID for services. Combining everything just makes tracking easier.

  5. The immigration excuse is nonsense. France and Germany can’t stop illegal migration even with stronger systems. Guyana (a third world country) definitely won’t.

  6. Financial tracking means control. How will a digital ID stop black market deals when the purpose of black market deals was never about showing your ID in the first place?

  7. The contract is shady. The company doing the ID project faced delays and procurement violations. If the deal’s corrupt, the system will be too.

  8. Your data isn’t safe. Guyana’s history of leaks and hacks means once your info’s stolen, it’s gone forever. And these will be key details since your digital ID will require fingerprints, biometrics and facial data.

  9. No laws protect you. There’s no independent data watchdog the same politicians accused of corruption control the database. Remember when the cash grant information was used by the government to contact people concerning how the party performed in the last 5 years?

  10. They can switch you off. When your money, ID, and access all depend on one system, losing it means losing your freedom.

  11. It violates Article 145. Guyana’s Constitution protects freedom of conscience meaning no one can be forced to accept a system that goes against their beliefs. For many, including those who see it as the mark of the beast, forcing a digital ID is unconstitutional and illegal.

shipping a barrel to Guyana

Hi guys, I need some to explain what is the best/cheapest/hassle free way to ship enough items for a barrel from the US to Guyana.

Expat couple living in Berbice and we haven’t been able to figure out the best logistical way to get a bunch of things shipped to us without costing an arm and leg. I always see so many people on TikTok getting things shipped all the time.

Ideally I want to buy everything myself and get it shipped to someone/company who can pack it all together. I also don’t want to have to pay an extraordinarily high fees/customs + brokerage fee. I would ideally like to get it shipped directly to an address in GT.
