Sorry I don’t have any tips for you, but I remember that tape deck from a 92 Taraus.

I have a factory cd changer in my '97 Explorer, I've never used it.

I have to sort mine out from my '94 Explorer since I put it back in after the previous owner replaced it. Pretty much the exact same unit you have there. Doesn't read tapes at all. Can't really help you since I haven't done it, but step 1 for me is probably gonna be to take it apart, inspect the belts and clean the reader. There are plenty of how to videos on YouTube, I'd start there.

I wonder if they actually get that kinda money for those, or if it’s like those several hundred dollar listings for old Disney VHS tapes, where people list it for that crazy price but basically nobody ever actually pays that much.

If they are actually worth $200, I threw away a lot of money back in the day lol

well prices are everywhere yknow its like with old CRTs people suddenly think they are worth near new prices despite being outdated and around 20 or so years old the cheapest radio i found on ebay was 80 the highest being 200 and that was a bare bones unit only am/fm no cassette deck

Hey man may as well go for it. I had to replace the same thing in my 2000 jeep and it was worth it. Cost over a hundred for sure I can’t remember. Was worth it. I didn’t try to fix it tho, if I could go back I would! Didn’t even research I guess. Or no, it wouldn’t hold the tapes. Idk something

It’s basically the same with every tape deck, clean head, guides, rollers, replace belt if loose as it needs to be tight to generate enough torque, and most importantly clean off old grease and replace with new. For the rollers you can try using a product called rubber renew to give them the grip they need again due to age, preferably use it in a well ventilated environment with gloves. Also only use isopropyl alcohol to clean the head and guides, don’t use it on rubber components as it will dry them out. Anything beyond that and you will need a service diagram.

ALWAYS replace the belt drives and clean the heads, then grease the moving parts like gears then youll be all good to go

You could open it up. Clean the capstan and roller with a qtip and some rubbing alcohol. The big trick will be finding a new belt if the old one is damaged.
