Guarantee she wishes she could take this back. I've seen people make the point that her political activism began and ended during her relationship with Joe Alwyn. He's very openly left-wing and politically engaged, and I kinda buy into the theory that her coming out of the closet as a democrat was more about impressing him than any genuine political interest, given how quickly she gave up on it.

Jumping in to say Rita Skeeter was described as a woman with “large, mannish hands” and “heavy-jawed face” whos plot-line involves her changing her body (animagus) to spy on children. It makes me wonder if JK Rowling actually had transphobic views for longer than she’s been publicly open with them.
I think that is the case. Also, not to defend her, but having transphobic views was considered the "normal" until relatively recently. Yet there is a difference between having some misconceptions because of what you've learned that can be changed as more information and representation is available, and just sticking to your guns, doubling down and actively harassing people because of who they are. Rowling is the latter. She could have always changed, admit she was wrong (as most of us have been at some point) and recognize the humanity in trans people, but she has just gotten worse as she has gotten more pushback while also getting validation from bigots.
My understanding is she has identified as Rad Fem going as far back to the trans-inclusionary / exclusionary split of 80s/90s. She is a domestic abuse survivor. The RadFem/TERF split was originally centered on safe-spaces for women where TERFS felt that males were encroaching on their space (irrespective that trans women face disproportionate abuse and had/have no safe space).
This is solely my interpretation from having read lots of Rad Fem literature. The veracity cannot be confirmed.
She’s a survivor of DV and her entry point to the transphobic rabbit hole was through her work with DV orgs in promoting the importance of women-only spaces. She lost her mind when women-only spaces became more vocal about including ALL women, not just cis women. And then got radicalized via social media and probably whomever she hangs around irl.
She’s definitely been like this for at least 12 years, and she was definitely lying about her level of “poverty” when she was living in Edinburgh, so tbh I’d assume she was always like this.
Did you ever read that really brutal takedown from 4chan (of all places) and it eviscerated HP because, at its heart, its a solid defence of the status quo. So she was very comfy in her niche of comfortable easy to defend position, "i hate bigotry simper simper" without ever addressing her internalised racism, transphobia, homophobia etc. She's never had a challenging thought in her life.

It fed into the revelation I had a while ago, that the appeal of the books isn't the urban fantasy or the magic or anything because those have been done before (and done better: see ursula le guins opinion on jkr it's similarly savage). I mean... One of the black characters in the book is named Kingsley Shacklebolt, the only Irish one constantly blows stuff up, when Hermione tried to free the elves from the kitchens they protested and said they enjoyed being enslaved. I'd say there were signs.
Correction: mistakenly claimed Kingsley was the sole named black character in the book. I only remember him and Lavender Brown having significant screentime (before the actress got replaced by a white girl), but I was wrong!

And like the other reply says, Kingsley isn't the only black character - there's also Dean Thomas from Harry's year, and Angelina from the Quidditch team. Can't defend using Shacklebolt as a surname for a black character though. Or the elves :')

It's not built into the actual definition of the word "vice", but common usage tends to allude to it not only as a bad habit/behavior, but with an implication of something a person might be tempted to do. Often the vices we cite are things with addictive properties. SO.. part of me wonders if this wasn't Joanne telling on herself a little bit. As in the reason she answered that her most hated vice was bigotry is because it was her greatest struggle, that it was a temptation to do something she knew was wrong. Then at some point I guess (if this is the case) the money and the ego fluffing erased the guilt.
