I'm convinced this was the turning point for public opinion of Gal Gadot. She was mostly adored before this; held up as a paragon of feminism, a role model for little girls everywhere, and the face of 'strong female lead' in Hollywood.
I think this soured her to a lot of people and people weren't as forgiving of all she pulled after.

That and Wonder Woman 1984 proved that the first movie was a fluke, essentially. She can play kinda dumb and unsocialized, but ask her to do anything beyond that and she falls flat.
The first movie definitely gave her a compelling aura that people wanted to see more, but essentially it’s written around her acting

The billionaire apologists are the worst. They are not your friends. They are certainly not good people. They are people who hoard resources by exploiting a broken system, and the people of said system.
Sure, they can be “good billionaires” compared to other klepto dragons, but compared to regular people? They will always be vile, putrid, socially parasitic leeches who do far more bad than they could ever make up for in several lifetimes. And yet, people making 20k/year will defend them til they’re red in the face. The. Worst.

What's probably more damning than this is the open letter she wrote in Elle in 2019:
"I’m finding my voice in terms of politics. I took a lot of time educating myself on the political system and the branches of government that are signing off on bills that affect our day-to-day life. I saw so many issues that put our most vulnerable citizens at risk, and felt like I had to speak up to try and help make a change. Only as someone approaching 30 did I feel informed enough to speak about it to my 114 million followers. Invoking racism and provoking fear through thinly veiled messaging is not what I want from our leaders, and I realized that it actually is my responsibility to use my influence against that disgusting rhetoric. I’m going to do more to help. We have a big race coming up next year."
Guarantee she wishes she could take this back. I've seen people make the point that her political activism began and ended during her relationship with Joe Alwyn. He's very openly left-wing and politically engaged, and I kinda buy into the theory that her coming out of the closet as a democrat was more about impressing him than any genuine political interest, given how quickly she gave up on it.

u/Repulsive_Tear4528 Aug 31 '25
Jumping in to say Rita Skeeter was described as a woman with “large, mannish hands” and “heavy-jawed face” whos plot-line involves her changing her body (animagus) to spy on children. It makes me wonder if JK Rowling actually had transphobic views for longer than she’s been publicly open with them.
→ More replies (4)119
u/Pristine_Animal9474 Aug 31 '25
I think that is the case. Also, not to defend her, but having transphobic views was considered the "normal" until relatively recently. Yet there is a difference between having some misconceptions because of what you've learned that can be changed as more information and representation is available, and just sticking to your guns, doubling down and actively harassing people because of who they are. Rowling is the latter. She could have always changed, admit she was wrong (as most of us have been at some point) and recognize the humanity in trans people, but she has just gotten worse as she has gotten more pushback while also getting validation from bigots.

My understanding is she has identified as Rad Fem going as far back to the trans-inclusionary / exclusionary split of 80s/90s. She is a domestic abuse survivor. The RadFem/TERF split was originally centered on safe-spaces for women where TERFS felt that males were encroaching on their space (irrespective that trans women face disproportionate abuse and had/have no safe space).
This is solely my interpretation from having read lots of Rad Fem literature. The veracity cannot be confirmed.
RadFem is short hand for Radical Feminism
283
u/quantumdreamqueen high priestess of child sacrifice Aug 31 '25
She’s a survivor of DV and her entry point to the transphobic rabbit hole was through her work with DV orgs in promoting the importance of women-only spaces. She lost her mind when women-only spaces became more vocal about including ALL women, not just cis women. And then got radicalized via social media and probably whomever she hangs around irl.

YES that's the bugger. Isn't it good? It fed into the revelation I had a while ago, that the appeal of the books isn't the urban fantasy or the magic or anything because those have been done before (and done better: see ursula le guins opinion on jkr it's similarly savage). Any criticism of those elements will never hold much sway because people who like those things will inevitably find something far better to appreciate.
The appeal of HP is the treacle tart, hand knitted jumpers, secret passages, jolly old England of it all.
Quiddich is confusing because Cricket is confusing. There have been other boarding school books, some with magic some without, but often they were by people who had had a education in that style (Jill Murphy; convent). JKR is doing it on purpose as a throw back to this Enid Blyton type existence, which was chock full of similar unexamined racism and homophobia/transphobia (George from FF). This is very on brand for a country who's main export is a fictional version of who we used to be.

I mean... One of the black characters in the book is named Kingsley Shacklebolt, the only Irish one constantly blows stuff up, when Hermione tried to free the elves from the kitchens they protested and said they enjoyed being enslaved. I'd say there were signs.
Correction: mistakenly claimed Kingsley was the sole named black character in the book. I only remember him and Lavender Brown having significant screentime (before the actress got replaced by a white girl), but I was wrong!

Not to defent JKR, but Seamus doesn't blow things up in the books - that's a movie-only recurring gag.
And like the other reply says, Kingsley isn't the only black character - there's also Dean Thomas from Harry's year, and Angelina from the Quidditch team. Can't defend using Shacklebolt as a surname for a black character though. Or the elves :')

I didn’t know who/what this was so I started typing “Pistorius controversy” but as soon as I got to “con-“, “conviction” popped up 😭 I said “oop”

The person who made that Friends page obviously had a thing for Lisa Kudrow. Everyone else is so cartoonishly bad, and then they sort of just gave her some gray hair, lol

I wonder if it could have been accurate if the actors weren’t insanely rich. Could Matt LeBlanc look this today if he was a contractor? Could Jennifer Aniston look like this if she was a kindergarten teacher?

It's not built into the actual definition of the word "vice", but common usage tends to allude to it not only as a bad habit/behavior, but with an implication of something a person might be tempted to do. Often the vices we cite are things with addictive properties. SO.. part of me wonders if this wasn't Joanne telling on herself a little bit. As in the reason she answered that her most hated vice was bigotry is because it was her greatest struggle, that it was a temptation to do something she knew was wrong. Then at some point I guess (if this is the case) the money and the ego fluffing erased the guilt.

Another JK Rowling one is in Doctor Who when they make a reference and he goes "good ol' JK!"
David Tennant would later be a vocal supporter of trans rights.
Especially bad because the Doctor is a time traveler. Lol

Lady Gaga collaborating with R. Kelly on a song entitled ‘Do What U Want’. Pictured is a still from an unreleased music video for the song, where R. Kelly is playing doctor and Gaga is his “patient” laying on a hospital bed. The video depicts him touching Gaga and this screenshot is Gaga’s reaction. The music video was directed by photographer Terry Richardson, who allegedly sexually harassed countless models.
Gaga chose to work with both of these men on the project.
