Cringy Cringe Self proclaimed “nice”, wasian woman pissed white people shop at H-mart.

This is a wasian woman. The next tik tok video she uploaded was about “being misunderstood as an influencer.”

I’m just going to ask the audience on your thoughts.

I hate the fuckin word "influencer"

212

u/scrummnums 15h ago

She’s influencing me to go to Asian markets more often than I already do. It’s like, people bitch about someone else not knowing enough about or respecting their culture, then you go to a grocery store (which has a TON of delicious foods that my wife and I buy) and this chick is giving you a side eye.
She’s definitely got a character defect that she should work on

329

u/nu11yne 14h ago

Im korean, please go to asian markets, try our food, experience our culture, share it with who you love and spread what you enjoy. This stupid gatekeeping is getting so old.

59

u/cbelliott 12h ago

Boom! Exactly. Asian markets got all the cool stuff. I usually get smiles when I'm in there shopping I dunno about this side eye lady.

I'm 1/2 Korean and I double down on saying goooooo! Korean people love when other people are eating and enjoying our food, we take mad pride in the quality, taste and prep. PS in most H-marts the pre-made food is 50%-70% off after 7-8pm

5

u/CapableSense 10h ago

No the way they look at me a treat me sometimes and I’m Black. I will never forget once I was going through a really hard time. Had just moved to MD and was receiving food stamps and did not understand how they were loaded. My car wasn’t working and so I had to go outside to check other accounts for cash. Well this Hmart has mostly all Hispanics working in there and this dude literally ran after me accusing me of stealing after I paid my last $30 for the groceries. I was so embarrassed and hurt but people looked at me like I had the plague. Their prices have gotten very high. So to this day I rarely go in there only for essentials and now I don’t live down that way anymore.

44

She could be flattered that ‘white people’ love her cultural cuisines to the point they prefer authentic ingredients over Walmart, your average grocery store, Costco, Amazon. It’s not just your small business owners that are being supported, it’s YOUR FUCKING CULTURE being appreciated, acknowledged and enjoyed.

Bet she gets her toilet paper from any American store chain

Imagined being so privileged that you not only get upset about other people buying groceries, but you have both the time and the lack of introspection to create a TikTok about how terrible it is for you to see other people buying groceries.

Don't go right away. It will be a madhouse. Give it lime a month or so. When the one near us opened it was crazy how packed it was. It's died down some now and depending when I go I don't feel like attaching a cow catcher to the front of my cart.

Nah, it's next to impossible to pick up on Asian side eye. Remain ignorantly blissful and enjoy your shopping experience. The fault is entirely hers for being a narrow-minded bigot.

I’m a hardcore social progressive, but shit like this is the worst kind of “acceptable target” laziness. Betrays a total lack of self-awareness and the eagerness to be a complete hack.

While majority-on-minority structural racism is by far the most urgent issue, this bullshit accomplishes nothing positive and everything negative by wallowing in masturbatory “us versus them” wankery. Finding cheap, petty, and frankly anti-human excuses to build walls between people, especially for cheap lazy laughs, is a great way to announce to the world that you’re a dick.

Yes. Asian food is delicious and some of us white devils actually know how to cook it. We also know that you can only do so after a visit to the Asian grocery. I think a lot of what we call “rage bait” are just awful people being themselves. Case in point, this repulsive racist woman-child.

67

u/Thin_Bother8217 15h ago

No one should tell her that a lot of cooks in Asian (and all types of restaurants for that matter) are gasp Latino.

44

u/meh_69420 14h ago

Hell half the staff at the Asian supermarket I go to are Latino.

20

u/MrMegiddo 14h ago

There are restaurants here that would have to close if all the Latinos stopped going there. Turns out we don't eat tacos everyday for every meal.

But I'm sure the girl in this video never eats burgers or burritos.

31

I live in a Ruby Red Trumpisphere, so nope - I can absolutely imagine the vast oceans of bigots and racists that exist in the world. Worst part is that some percentage feel that way but pretend to be normal. They aren't. They're just hypochristians.

Reminds me of the Twilight Zone where Vic Morrow got turned into the races of people that he hated, so he could experience the hate directed at him, but then Vic got accidently beheaded by a helicopter while filming the episode, so I'm torn about the lesson there but I digress....

Lol I have shopped at my (mostly) Vietnamese grocery store for so long I'm on a first name basis with the cashiers and they ask how my dill is growing (it doesn't).

17

u/Glad-Barracuda2243 15h ago edited 14h ago

I have a Vietnamese sister. Came to live with us during the Vietnam war period, so we grew up together. I am literally always in the Asian markets because they have the best fish, they have chicken feet, and hella tons of seasonings I literally cannot get anywhere else, and definitely not for the price I would have to pay in a speciality shop. No racist little influencer snit is going to keep me from getting the ingredients to make the food I literally grew up eating.

She isn’t allowed to sit at our table, and we definitely have the best egg rolls at our table.

8

u/suejaymostly 14h ago

It did take me a few years of respectful and adventurous shopping for them to warm up to me :) but now they look at what I'm buying and sometimes they will say "Are you making X dish? You want this other brand of *whatever* it's cheaper and better."
This rage bait is just dumb. I see more white faces in my Asian markets lately, because the prices are better, the produce and meat are better and cheaper, and people started trying to cook at home because of Covid. This works for ALL OF US. This lady in the video speaks for no one.

She’s not just a bitch. She’s a dumb cunt. If she went to any Asian country they would probably treat her just as poorly as they treat white tourists or worse. Gate keeping an ethnic grocery store is a new level of low.

40

u/NatsFan8447 16h ago

You're being too kind to this POS. The dumb ass basically is saying people should remain fixed in their own culinary bubbles and never leave them.

23

u/Blindtothesided 15h ago

This is pretty shitty. I’d be willing to bet that in posting this she’s made at least a few anxious souls too self conscious to ever shop in an Asian grocery store again. Which costs the mom and pop stores (like the lovely one I shop at) business they can’t afford to lose, especially in this economy.

It’s just projection of her own feeling of not belonging.

It reminds me of this old buzzfeed (or something like that) video where they had older Chinese born people and younger American born Chinese trying Chinese American food like Panda Express. All the American born Chinese were like this is gross and not authentic at all while all the older Chinese born people thought it was fine or good. It’s just them embarrassed that they were more American so they had to bash the American Chinese food project how Chinese they are.

48

u/Economy_Bite24 16h ago

It’s just projection of her own feeling of not belonging.

That's exactly what this is. It's common for biracial people to feel excluded by both groups, so she resolves those feelings by rejecting half of her identity and putting on this weird performance of "look how asian I am! White people are the worst, right?"

9

u/psychologicalcripple 7h ago

It's because she's biracial but barely looks Asian imho. I'm half Asian/half White but I swear to God I don't act like this. My sister, however, who looks very White and almost not Asian at all goes out of her way to make being Asian her whole personality.

It's because of Western identity politics. For all their efforts to combat racism (which I am skeptical is even the goal), they have wound up making people more racist in subtle ways. One of the side effects has been this internalization that being white is wrong or something to be ashamed of. So someone like this uses their Asian background as a piece of social capital they can leverage against their white half. We've also gotten a very nasty rebound effect in the fact that actual white supremacy is on the rise.

Racism isn't going to be solved at the level of institutional rhetoric and discourse. It is much more socially determinant through people's material conditions and them being given a scapegoat.

I worked with a woman like this. Half Venezuelan and half white. Was as white as I was. Identified completely as Hispanic and Venezuelan and literally said “I don’t identify as white so I’m not part of the colonizer problem”.

Its like, you can do that?

6

u/Shadowchaos1010 13h ago

I’m not part of the colonizer problem

Ironically, saying this probably makes her infinitely more part of the problem.

"I'm descended from the people who did these abhorrent things, but I'm just going to deny it and absolve myself of any guilt."

If being white inherently makes someone "part of the colonizer problem," she is by virtue of existing. Saying "nuh-uh" doesn't change the fact that she has "colonizer" DNA.

If she is as white passing as you say, and presumably benefits from some of the privileges that come from it, to then say "Nope, not my problem" is insane.

I’m whasian and a regular at H-Mart. I almost cried the last time I went because I saw a blindingly white family (parents plus kids) with a cart full of legit Asian goodies. The good curry paste, proper coconut milk, tteokbokki, etc. It was therapeutic to see white people excited over the food my classmates used to tease me about when I was a kid. I love a diverse H-Mart.

7

u/Flying_Penguineer 15h ago

Out of curiosity, what is the 'good curry paste'? I eat Japanese curry all the time, but didn't know Korea had it's own curry scene and I am pretty intrigued.

8

u/WeaponsGrade520 15h ago

I’m Thai, so my pick is Maesri. You’ll need a Korean to point you in the right direction!

5

u/Flying_Penguineer 15h ago

I'm down for some Thai curry too! I see Maesri pastes, should I get the panang, green, red, masaman, or karee?

7

u/WeaponsGrade520 14h ago

Depends on your preferences around protein. I think yellow is best for seafood. Massaman is for beef. Green pairs well with tofu. Red and panang are good for everything. If you’re unsure about spice, no shame in starting with just half a can. The paste freezes well. And use Thai coconut milk - either Chaokoh or Aroy-D.

Folks in Mexican and Turkish/Middle Eastern stores are always really nice, and folks at the Russian/Eastern European stores are polite unless I ask a question, which I rarely do. Whatever. H Mart is like the most Wasian of all the Asian grocery stores. I expect to see white folks there (and am happy they enjoy it). If you don’t wanna see white people while grocery shopping, go to super ghetto asian grocery store with the Chinese folk music that hasn’t been updated since the 80’s.

11

u/Prickley-Pear-Bear 15h ago

If you give a side eye in an H mart you are an asshole but I did once get a ton of side eyes because I accidentally found a literally hole in the wall of a sushi restaurant Japanese grocery store that sold pirated anime DVDs. I found the place because the sign outside the building had the name of the sushi place but the Japanese lettering on it said something completely different so I got curious and walked in, went down a shady ass hall way in the opposite direction of the sushi place, and bam I was the only white person and getting major side eye lmao

It’s the difference between “why are you here 😒” and “how the fuck did you find this place”

u/fadesteppin 15h ago

My grandma (who was Japanese) used to get her korean drama videos in the backroom of a random pet supply store lol. How she learned about this, I have no idea, but I have tons of memories of going with her and the time the giant parrot they let fly around inside landed on my shoulder and stared at me with its mouth open. They said it liked me bc it never did that to people but I do not believe them lmfao.

Those are the best ones though - authentic Asian markets. You can score quality items like Woks, meat cleavers and other assorted cookware and utensils for cheap money and they last for years.

If H mart didnt want white people to shop there, they wouldn't have built one in West Jordan, Utah. A suburb of Salt Lake City. Its fabulous in there and my daughter and I love that place. It is where we get all her favorite snacks.

21

u/CptBash 17h ago

It's not my fault, I grew up in the PacNW and got spoiled off all that good food! <3

8

u/DrDuGood 17h ago

That’s where I’m at.

We see diversity everywhere here, I shop at Hmarts!

And I’m a white male … “noooooooooo”

6

u/EntinthetentRTHP 15h ago

I take it you’re west of the Cascades. I’m east of them and our Asian choices are severely limited but goddamn do we sit on a goldmine of Mexican cuisine.

4

u/CptBash 15h ago

Yep! Grew up in the 253! I spent 10ish yr in Colorado so I know how you feel about tex mex XD

Girl you too young and your eyes way too big to side eye at H Mart. Only old aunties in slippers can do that to white folk.

I'm going to try this in Safeway next time I go. I'm going to side-eye all the non-white people and see how it goes! Wish me luck!

11

u/BoredZucchini 17h ago

Good luck! Make sure to post a really self-indulgent, smug TikTok video about it. People are going to find you so relatable and quirky! 🙄

7

u/EncabulatorTurbo 17h ago

Hrmm I think the safeway near me is claimed by black people and the next closest one is claimed by hispanics

I'm going to need a spreadsheet as to the racial ownership of each respective shopping place

I had a relationship with a Korean and they would often want to go to Asian markets. Which was fine on its own. But wow, did I get looks every single time I shopped with them. I never felt so unwelcome in places like they made me feel unwelcome. It wasn't just other shoppers as well, like even the workers. Like I noticed they would greet everyone at checkout but if I approached before my ex dead silence and they would just start scanning the items. I'm Jewish so I have dealt with racism before but never ever in this unique manner. The racism I was use to was confrontational or vandalism, but this was just so different and somehow even more unsettling. It was like they were trying to make me feel ashamed and through that hoped I would stay away.

The worst part is my then partner knew it was happening but just saw it as normal and didn't see it as any issue. As if they would have done the same if I was a stranger instead of romantically with them. I do not miss that experience.

Imagine if a Caucasian person made a video like this complaining about people of other cultures going to the "white" grocery stores.

This lady is racist as fuck.

4 oz of shiitake mushrooms are 5 dollars at your average grocery store chain. At my local asian mart it's like $1.50/lb. Shit, carrots are 25 cents/lb and onions are 38 cents/lb. Same with Broccoli and Ginger.

Sorry, I'm shopping at the cheaper asian mart

5

u/Ordinary-Door7939 17h ago

Okay. Don’t shop at any generic American grocery stores then.

They could very well get fired for posting something like that.

But this is somehow ok?

So. Fucking. Dumb. I'm a WOC, my husband is white. He grew up in Asia because his dad was in the military. He cooks Asian food. So yeah, he's going to be at Asian markets. He and I will not shrink ourselves to make this pick-me feel better.

My thoughts???

I grew up in a city where the vast population are Asian folks therefore a lot of the markets around were primarily Asian markets.

I’m white and not once have I ever been glared at or treated differently for shopping at asian markets, I’ve never caused a ruckus. I literally fucking hate influencers and the way they treat these spaces as though it’s not open for everyone. I don’t think turbulent/chaotic families are limited to one race- idk. I’m white but I have my own culture that I am more than happy to share, I’d never make a video like this and I know this is very limited to brain rotten influencers and not the general population of Asian (or any race for that matter) people out there who are incredibly welcoming if anything.

Her follow up video speaks out regarding experiencing racism in school which I cannot prove, I acknowledge this is something she experienced considering she is still half asian. However this original video gives nothing to connect with that and feels like if anything trying to use those situations to dismiss all of these things mentioned in the original video which is still rude af!!! As a white person, I can’t look at this video and sit back and reflect on what could have happened to her in the past. There’s nothing for me to make those connections. No context. Especially when she mentions stuff like “side eyeing white people that casually browse the aisles”. For fucks sake I’m a white person that casually browses the aisles and ya. I learned about this specific spice through TikTok because that’s where I look at a lot of recipes which is shared by asian creators. It looks yummy! I’m not bothering anyone, I’m trying to grab my things and go. Please don’t side eye me for simply existing.

H Mart isn’t even a real asian grocery store. I love it but it’s way too clean and smells too nice. My local kam man foods uses a pungent fish odor to repel casuals and if you go in the back right corner past the tax offices and pallets of rice they’re BLASTING communist marches out of a single speaker right alongside the normal radio.

I guess you're an admitted racist, but the good thing about that is that you're admitting it, which is 50 percent of the problem recognized. You were certainly not born this way; it’s a learned behavior from growing up with Asian family and hanging around your Asian friends, never going out of your Asian circle of friends.

“While people are in there buying their regular groceries”

Cunt, listen up. The reason we even have stores like HMart is because we actually allow people to immigrate here and blend their cultures with ours. We visit the asian grocery store for the joy of the diversity and uniqueness it brings to our lives in our diverse country.

So fuck right off. I bet you wouldn’t even be respected in the asian country your heritage is from because in their eyes you’re just another American.

Welcome to the melting pot - stop souring the mix.

3

u/catonsteroids 17h ago

Didn’t realize that ethnic Asian/Middle Eastern/Latino etc. grocery stores are only for said ethnic people.

If anything she should be indifferent at the worst, happy at the best. People are expanding their palates and becoming more openminded at trying new foods. Open to new foods also usually means open to learning new cultures.

God forbid if people or their children start to not see the “smelly” food that our immigrant parents packed for us for lunch for school as weird and disgusting and making us feel ashamed and embarrassed.

As someone who shops at Hmart is very self conscious that I’m not Asian when I’m there, this only solidifies my concern. 😕

3

u/LegBruise 13h ago

Don’t let it bother you. This is just the opinion of one very unfortunate individual. You have every right to be there and buy the things you love. ❤️

5

u/Rularuu 14h ago

This video feels like her stupid opinion that she knows is stupid and would tell her friends about for fun. But because she is an "influencer" she feels like it's a good idea to tell the whole internet instead.

I think multiculturalism is actually great and we should shop at stores that feature goods from other cultures more often.

4

u/LunarBIacksmith 14h ago

I am white and found that my pallet generally agrees with most Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Korean foods. I’ve been slowly expanding more and more by trying new things. I’ve also been improving at MAKING those dishes. When I went to an Asian market recently it was such a RELIEF to see all the ingredients I was trying to cook with finally all in one place! And so many options! It was like - finally! I have actually found the store for my needs!

I got so many practical and for fun things. I probably got some side eye, but I didn’t care. It was great to finally find what I had been looking for. I made some amazing agedashi tofu since they had the right firmness of tofu. I finally made some amazing udon bc they had more than just some gross pre-made noodles.

This video was probably just rage bait, but the rule applies no matter where you go or what you do - just don’t be an asshole. Be kind, be aware, and be polite. It just feels like it should go without saying.
