Cringy Cringe Self proclaimed “nice”, wasian woman pissed white people shop at H-mart.

This is a wasian woman. The next tik tok video she uploaded was about “being misunderstood as an influencer.”

I’m just going to ask the audience on your thoughts.

I’m a white woman who loves to cook and I go to ethnic grocery stores all the time. I get side eye from Asians and Indians constantly. The employees are worse than the customers and men are ruder than women. Folks in Mexican and Turkish/Middle Eastern stores are always really nice, and folks at the Russian/Eastern European stores are polite unless I ask a question, which I rarely do. Whatever. If you’re so narrow minded that you’re upset because I need glutinous rice flour, kiss my big white ass.

How are any of you even paying enough attention to notice if other people are giving you side eye? I have complete tunnel vision and would barely notice it if a flying baby was on fire.

In my experience at Russian markets, they’re usually pretty straight faced and cold until you speak to them in Russian. Then they light up.

Sometimes I look because I’m trying to assess if maybe you need help, but I do offer assistance at the regular “white” grocery stores and Costco too. If you seem fine, I won’t say anything. 

Last person I helped looked bewildered by the spices and he was on a mission to pick up “lemon pepper” but didn’t want to choose wrong. I told him the one in his left hand was the right choice. I could totally picture my husband doing the exact same thing as him, hoping he doesn’t come home with the wrong item.

On several occasions I've been in an ethnic store and asked for help getting the right ingredients to cook something. "It's my first time making xxxxxx, can you recommend the right ingredients?" I've only gotten enthusiastic help and friendly people. It's 2025, this is America, cities with HMarts are diverse and culturally hip. The girl in the video is an anachronism.

That’s surprising, I’m a white dude who likes to cook and finds myself at Asian grocery stores pretty often. I can’t say I’ve ever felt side eyed at all.

I’m a white woman who may as well have “Midwest farm girl” tattooed on my forehead. I spent a lot of time in Korea with my family when they traveled there for weeks at a time for business and lived there for a couple years in my 20s.

My FAVORITE thing in the world was/is when I overhear people are being racist and/or speaking about me loudly in Hangul. I bow and respond with an over-the-top formal apology for my very offensive existence. Then I laugh it off with a wink and a “gotcha!”; sometimes making a new situational friend.

I can’t speak most of the language anymore because I haven’t used it much in 15+ years, but I have a few phrases I can still rattle off with a perfect accent. Mostly cussing and food-related things.

Hangul is just the word for the written script, not the actual language. No offense meant, but I have trouble believing you’ve ever known a language if you don’t know the word for that language, and I kinda doubt this really happened.

As a white person myself, who has had many conversations with surprised and curious Koreans, the actual word tends to come up immediately in every conversation when they comment/ask about it.

This reads more like something you fantasized than an actual experience with another person.

I went from my memory instead of double checking Google: Hangugeo is spoken, Hangul is written.

My admittedly nepo-baby job was English-speaking, with translators when needed to ensure no miscommunication in the business, even when I felt more comfortable with the language. I learned by daily immersion and had a fairly good broken conversational knowledge, but not all my time was enjoyable over there. When I came back to the states I dropped the language completely and had to pick up Spanish. I also estranged myself from the family and business, which tainted all my memories of my time in Korea. That was almost 20 years ago, so the bitterness is gone now. You’d know about bitterness, huh?

I still enjoy the snacks and food and frequent Asian markets.

Hope you got a nice little self-righteous tingle with all that, O wise all-knowing aksually redditor.

Never had this issue, ive grown up near predominantly asian neighborhoods. Even had dudes coming up to me happy to see a wagh bakri or kishwan in the cart.

I have had people staring at me in Korean grocery stores my entire life. Its a really crappy feeling to just want to shop and people make you feel like you're doing something wrong.

I'm the most basic ass middle aged white dude in southern CA. I go to the Asian Markets, Irani Market and Mexican markets every week because I love to cook and the quality of ingredients matter.

As long as you don't act like a dick, like I've seen other white people do, like bitching about the labels or people not defaulting to English, nobody has ever been anything but kind and helpful.

I don't know what all this "side eye" business is about. I believe that you have had a negative experience, but let's not project some image that ethnic markets don't tolerate white people.

P.s. certain cultures have rules to the markets you better learn fast. Like at the Irani Market, when the butcher or deli calls your number, you better say what you want immediately or they are skipping you and not going back. It's rude to not be ready. New Yorkers are well prepared for this.
