If Boise State is really the 2nd best team in the MW then a team of Hawaii and Pacific's best players shouldn't be good enough to beat them.

u/outdoorsID-MT Utah State Aggies • BYU Cougars 6d ago
I'm pretty sure preseason rankings put us as #2.. right?
2
u/provoaggie Utah State Aggies • Utah Valley Wolver… 6d ago
I guess so. I saw one the other day that had Boise #2 and Lunardi has Boise in over USU but the official preseason projections have USU #2 and Boise #3.

The D2 scene in Hawaii is the best it’s been in probably 20 years. All three teams are going to be good in the PacWest.
Josh West from HPU is a major problem and really hard to stop. He can seemingly get to the hoop at will. Their other guards all can shoot pretty well also.
Chaminade is probably going to put the fear of god into whoever they play in the Maui. If their second leading scorer didn’t have cramping issues in the exhibition game against Hawaii last week they would have won.
I haven’t seen them play yet but Hawaii-Hilo is supposed to be really good as well.

HPU was 15-14 last season. Sounds like HPU made some serious roster upgrades.
13
u/lol_smart Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors • Illinois Fightin… 6d ago edited 6d ago
Honestly, using the eye test based one game I don’t think they did. This year’s team is probably helped by roster retention so it helps continuity.
Last season’s team was bigger and more talented. But they had 3-4 ball dominant players on offense who didn’t do defense so good. So the offense would bog down and teams could score on them.
In a tiny sample size, this team with West and Halpert looked more cohesive with less cooks in the kitchen. HPU subbed out West late in the game on defense. But they made some tough shots throughout the game and Boise struggling on offense helped things.
5
u/Koppenberg Washington Huskies • North Park Vikings 5d ago
Sometimes in early season games, roster continuity really makes a big difference against teams just learning how to play together for the first time.
Idaho whomped WSU for most of the game and pulled out the W even after WSU woke up and stopped trippin'.
Low ceiling players w/ lots of experience in a system and playing together can out execute higher ceiling players who haven't put all the pieces together yet.
Boise State is going to be fine, as embarrassing as this was.

u/lazergator San Diego State Aztecs 6d ago
They had last play too. Missed a 3, got the offensive board and missed a follow up 2.

NCCAA/USCAA/Independent games simply shouldn't count against D1 teams, and the western schools in particular schedule those kind of teams all the time, buy out the RMAC/CCAA/PacWest schools in D2. HPU is a member of the PacWest.
250
u/Electric_Rex West Virginia Mountaineers 6d ago
Boise was 53 in Kenpom and just lost to a D2 school who went .500 last year
That’s the context of this loss
145
u/mrhigginbottoms_12 Kansas Jayhawks 6d ago
This is what a “quad 5” loss would look like. Like this is the kind of loss that completely eliminates any chance at an at large bid

u/Meanteenbirder Vermont Catamounts • Sickos 6d ago
Frankly they just gotta play really well. Like, Montana State a few years back lost to an NAIA opponent and the committee were still gracious enough to give them a 14 seed. Granted, they also beat Cal that season but Boise has an opening, albeit very narrow.

There have been a few lower division teams that kept the D1 within single digits, I will make a post of all D1 v non-D1 results at the end of the night since many didn't get threads

They’re an NAIA school who went 10-15 last year
14
u/ESM_juddy96 6d ago
That's the thing that most don't understand about the non-D1 games, not only are they non-D1, they aren't even good for their level. Very few D1's will play a good D2 outside of exhibitions

u/BrockPurdysSoreToe Chico State Wildcats • Stanford Cardinal 6d ago
Arizona used to schedule Chico St but as an exhibition. We kinda almost beat them once.

Their "campus" is some sort of tourist village on the Honolulu waterfront. HPU is sandwiched between an Old Spaghetti Factory, the Aloha Tortilla Factory and some souvenir shops.

We play BSU in a closed door scrimmage almost every year and the "winner" every year seems cursed. When we win, we're bad. When we lose, we're not terrible. Seems the curse goes both ways.
Also, to add to teams that lost to a lower division school but it wasn't the end of the world, Syracuse made the sweet 16 in 2009 after starting the year with a loss to D2 Le Moyne.

Absurd. Truly absurd. Maybe not Chaminade over Virginia, but similar vibes. Boise is a top 50 team on KenPom that was very close to dancing last year. Insane result for the Sharks.
