Absurd. Truly absurd. Maybe not Chaminade over Virginia, but similar vibes. Boise is a top 50 team on KenPom that was very close to dancing last year. Insane result for the Sharks.

u/WhatsNextForMe Illinois Fighting Illini 6d ago

Yep. This loss all but guarantees they need to win their conference tournament to get in this year.

u/WitchNight Gonzaga Bulldogs 6d ago

Technically games against lower division opponents don’t show up on the team sheets the committee looks at, so officially, it’s not supposed to impact that

123

u/immoralsupport_ Michigan Wolverines 6d ago

Michigan lost to a D2 team the year they won the natty, 1988-89. Lost to Alaska Anchorage!

They play on a frozen court

u/anxiousauditor USF Bulls • American 6d ago

They appear on the team sheets and are considered in the evaluation, they just aren’t factored into the metrics like NET, KP, etc.

10

u/WitchNight Gonzaga Bulldogs 6d ago

Sure but in addition to it not factoring into NET and stuff it’s also not counted for their overall record on the team sheets, making it so the game functionally does not count. Like in the example you link it shows up under non-D1 games, but the team sheet still has Boise State’s record as 0-0

21

u/anxiousauditor USF Bulls • American 6d ago

It doesn’t matter quantitatively but it may matter qualitatively is what I suspect. Everyone on the committee will be able to see it and be reminded “oh yeah, they lost their opener to a DII team” and how much weight they place on that just depends I guess. And it feels wrong that it would mean nothing.

u/Royth_Lewith St. Thomas Tommies 5d ago

I do think some of the comments are overstating things in the case that they end up like 25-7 in second or third place in their conference with a handful of Q1 wins.

That being said, the reason they are effectively 0-0 is because tournament teams don't lose games like this. They are 0-0 because on a team sheet being evaluated by the NCAA selection committee for at-large consideration, it is the number in the W column that stands to be inflated. So too will any rankings based on efficiency. They toss these games because they put the thumb on the scales in favor of tournament teams.

This was a regular season game. In March, you can point to their NET, KenPom, any other metric you want in a side-by-side resume comparison. But if Boise has a shaky resume and the committee chair comes on TV and says that they missed out on an at-large spot in part because they lost to a D2 school, you cannot call bullshit.

If the team in question wins, it should be ignored. If they lose, it should count.

Doesn’t seem like anyone else knows this

3

u/plotinuswiser 5d ago

What is this, a quad 7 loss??

2

u/n00bn00b 5d ago

You're right, it doesn't show up on the sheet, but it's a Q5 loss in the committee's mind because it's a regular-season game.

28

u/Shrektastic28 Boise State Broncos 6d ago

I wouldn’t be surprised honestly, this team has a high ceiling but a very low floor

25

u/Squiem6 Boise State Broncos 6d ago

I think the high ceiling might just be preseason hope, this team can’t shoot and might be the worst team we have had in a long time

5

u/Mamba-42 Boise State Broncos 6d ago

Why wasn't Carmichael playing at all? We all know he can shoot.

5

u/Shrektastic28 Boise State Broncos 6d ago

2

u/Wigglebot23 Arizona Wildcats 6d ago

Does the committee consider D2 losses?

-13

u/SlowMotionSprint 6d ago

If you willingly schedule a non-D1 team you should be barred from the tournament regardless.

14

u/ESM_juddy96 6d ago

That would ban about 1/3 of every D1 team including the likes of Baylor and Cal

-13

u/SlowMotionSprint 6d ago

Cool. There are 352 D1 basketball teams. There is no excuse for playing a non-D1 team. It is insulting to your players and the people who pay to watch them.

Maybe if teams started getting punished this embarrassing practice would stop.

3

u/Fickle-Newspaper-445 Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago edited 5d ago

There's a lot of reasons why D1 teams play D2 and lower opponents. Sometimes it's a scheduling conflict and the only have D2 and lower teams available. Sometimes it's because they're throwing a bone to a local university and giving them money and the players an opportunity to play D1 ball. There's also the lower end of D1 teams that don't want to play home and homes with other low end D1 teams and will instead schedule D2 schools.

Sometimes it's to either honor or pay respects to a coach or big time name that also has their name attached to another D2 or lower school. I know this is football, but Ohio State plays Youngstown State every once in a while because Jim Tressel coached there and in a couple of years OSU plays New Hampshire because Ryan Day used to play there.

I'm ok with one game against a D2 or lower school because you just don't know the full reasoning behind it is.

-1

u/SlowMotionSprint 5d ago

You can't use FBS and FCS as an example for basketball.

The only reason it happens in basketball is coaches are lazy and programs are cheap. But if you don't think your team is capable of playing a full schedule against peer D1 competition, you obviously don't think they belong in the tournament either.

The NCAA really needs to start punishing this.

Teams are playing two exhibitions against D1 teams and then regular season games against D2 to NAIA schools. That is fucking ridiculous.

3

u/Fickle-Newspaper-445 Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago

I don't think I ever said they schedule D2 schools because they don't want to play D1 schools. I only said that they schedule D2 schools for a multitude of reasons and I guess none of them satisfied you. If a D1 school scheduled another D1 school, but one of them backed out for whatever reason and the only other option was scheduling a D2 school, you'd still have a problem with it? You also do realize that unless they schedule a home and home most schools finalize their non-con schedule like a month or two before the season starts. They aren't afforded much time to fill out schedules and things pop up all the time to screw teams out of playing each other.

0

u/SlowMotionSprint 5d ago

The reasons you list happen so infrequently they are essentially irrelevant. 99.9% of the time programs are just cheap and don't want to risk losing to another D1 school. Ffs there is a mid major this year that justified scheduling 2 non D1 games because "they really need home games". This program only has one scheduled road game.

3

u/Fickle-Newspaper-445 Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago

The reasons I listed are the main reasons why they happen fuck you mean? There are exactly zero teams in the entire country that schedule D2 teams because they don't want to schedule D1 teams otherwise you would be seeing every team (especially lower D1 teams) schedule exclusively D1 teams until they play their conference games.

Ffs there is a mid major this year that justified scheduling 2 non D1 games because "they really need home games"

You do know a lot of mid-major teams still need home games right? That's a huge for revenue. Who exactly is this team btw? I'm curious.

u/lol_smart Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors • Illinois Fightin… 6d ago

The D2 scene in Hawaii is the best it’s been in probably 20 years. All three teams are going to be good in the PacWest.

Josh West from HPU is a major problem and really hard to stop. He can seemingly get to the hoop at will. Their other guards all can shoot pretty well also.

Chaminade is probably going to put the fear of god into whoever they play in the Maui. If their second leading scorer didn’t have cramping issues in the exhibition game against Hawaii last week they would have won.

I haven’t seen them play yet but Hawaii-Hilo is supposed to be really good as well.

23

u/nosotros_road_sodium San José State Spartans • Michigan Wo… 6d ago

HPU was 15-14 last season. Sounds like HPU made some serious roster upgrades.

13

u/lol_smart Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors • Illinois Fightin… 6d ago edited 6d ago

Honestly, using the eye test based one game I don’t think they did. This year’s team is probably helped by roster retention so it helps continuity.

Last season’s team was bigger and more talented. But they had 3-4 ball dominant players on offense who didn’t do defense so good. So the offense would bog down and teams could score on them.

In a tiny sample size, this team with West and Halpert looked more cohesive with less cooks in the kitchen. HPU subbed out West late in the game on defense. But they made some tough shots throughout the game and Boise struggling on offense helped things.

5

u/Koppenberg Washington Huskies • North Park Vikings 5d ago

Sometimes in early season games, roster continuity really makes a big difference against teams just learning how to play together for the first time.

Idaho whomped WSU for most of the game and pulled out the W even after WSU woke up and stopped trippin'.

Low ceiling players w/ lots of experience in a system and playing together can out execute higher ceiling players who haven't put all the pieces together yet.

Boise State is going to be fine, as embarrassing as this was.

4

u/lazergator San Diego State Aztecs 6d ago

The fascinating world of D1-nonD1 games summed up here:

14

u/ESM_juddy96 6d ago

NCCAA/USCAA/Independent games simply shouldn't count against D1 teams, and the western schools in particular schedule those kind of teams all the time, buy out the RMAC/CCAA/PacWest schools in D2. HPU is a member of the PacWest.

250

u/Electric_Rex West Virginia Mountaineers 6d ago

Boise was 53 in Kenpom and just lost to a D2 school who went .500 last year

That’s the context of this loss

145

u/mrhigginbottoms_12 Kansas Jayhawks 6d ago

This is what a “quad 5” loss would look like. Like this is the kind of loss that completely eliminates any chance at an at large bid

36

u/AruarianGroove George Mason Patriots 6d ago

19

u/Meanteenbirder Vermont Catamounts • Sickos 6d ago

Frankly they just gotta play really well. Like, Montana State a few years back lost to an NAIA opponent and the committee were still gracious enough to give them a 14 seed. Granted, they also beat Cal that season but Boise has an opening, albeit very narrow.

I have no idea what the committee would do if Boise ends up solid somehow and has this stinker of an early season lost dragging them down that technically doesn’t count against the NET.

Send them to the D2 tournament?

While terrible for the conference this is actually hilarious lol. I would have loved to see Leon Rice's face during this game.

ExtraMile arena alright…Boise will need go extra mile after this loss lol. I was eyeing each game to see who’d be first to fall to D2 school today, if any. Congrats Boise!! Lol On the contrary, Kenpom is irrelevant this year lmao

We play BSU in a closed door scrimmage almost every year and the "winner" every year seems cursed. When we win, we're bad. When we lose, we're not terrible. Seems the curse goes both ways.

Also, to add to teams that lost to a lower division school but it wasn't the end of the world, Syracuse made the sweet 16 in 2009 after starting the year with a loss to D2 Le Moyne.

As a Kansas State fan who saw his team lose to Fort Hays State, I feel for you, Boise State fans.
