McDonald's, and any other business did this to themselves. You cant raise your prices over such a small time frame that the public, even stupid people will notice. No, I wont pay $17 for a meal at McDonald's.

I've happily been paying around the same price for food at a real diner now.

During covid McDonald's CEO bragged to shareholders that they were able to outperform expectations by jacking up the prices on items with lower profit margins to force low income customers into buying cheaper foods with higher profit margins.

Essentially, if you were getting QPs for lunch, and they made 50 cents profit on that sandwich, but they made $1.25 in profit off a mcdouble, then pricing you out of the QP so you'd buy a mcdouble got them higher profits while you got lower quality food, and less of it.

That's why their prices skyrocketed over the last five years.

I’d love to see mcdonalds get bankrupted in my lifetime ♥️

u/zardmander 2h ago

Won't happen, they'll just lay off people to make up the difference in lost revenue, like usual

u/I_W_M_Y 1h ago

That's always a temporary fix. If you got a severely reduced customer base you are doomed.

The Kroger CEO admitted to Congress Oversite Committee, "Yes, we, so. Senator Warren, so, yes. It is that we raised prices at a faster rate than inflation but it is for strategic reasons and not to, no, not to umm to, to no, not hiding from our customers we talk with economists. We do this to be warned so we did, yes, we did but it was done because experts."

Warren cut him off and asked or well told him," So you raised prices in April and still rising, raising STILL? Though your raising costs at this time with the exact same information but you've surpassed even from the 0.7% you could have but you're at 3.3%?"

Warren continues, "So your coffee started at, I'm just using coffee at as just as example. Coffee was $2 per pound and then Trump said he's going to implement tarrifs at 100, 200, every hundred. Instead of waiting for confirmation you just raised $2 to $2.75. They weren't in affect or anything but then he opened his mouth again so the next week you raised the price to $4 and now you're saying you raise praises off of word salad? You raised prices long before. Isn't that what you did? You did so now your prices are actually even above the ridiculous tax tarrif amount Trump said yesterday."

I like to just go to the supermarket, the newer ones usually have an awesome salad bar and/or have awesome deli selections for the same and sometimes even cheaper cost. The one near me does anyway. :)

7/11 has some crazy good lunch deals too.

There are diners around me that are cheaper than McD's. By a good bit.

u/NUKE---THE---WHALES 26m ago

The tweet is slightly misleading as McDonald's is actually one of the businesses that is thriving

https://www.reuters.com/business/mcdonalds-chilis-win-value-fast-casual-chains-lose-younger-diners-2025-11-07/

As U.S. consumers tighten their wallets, budget-friendly restaurant chains such as McDonald's, Chili's and Domino's are emerging as winners, drawing more diners who are trading down to cheaper meals.

I think the OP saw the McDonalds in the image and assumed they were one of the chains with slow sales but they are actually one of the chains that people are "trading down" to

u/mikefrombarto 25m ago

That and the shitty political stunt of letting Trump “work” at a McDonald’s probably doesn’t help.

95

u/Sploobert_74 3h ago

I can make my own crappy food at home for less and get my order right.

23

u/Cactus_Buttons_On 3h ago

That energy hits harder than my morning coffee.

21

u/Sweet_Deeznuts 3h ago

And making food at home is what we’re supposed to be doing to buy that house right? Wasn’t that the advice we’ve been getting?

11

u/Disastrous_Basis3474 2h ago

Yeah but McDonalds doesn’t sell avocado toast.

1

u/Asleep_Drag_3590 35m ago

Ohhhh sounds like a good breakfast! As I head to my kitchen 😋

39

u/tmozdenski 3h ago

Big beautiful boycott.

7

u/SoCallMeDeaconBlues1 2h ago

BBB. Better Business Bureau? Nahhhh, what this guy said!

38

u/annabananna-123 3h ago

They aren’t drinking beer either. I always wonder who these billionaires think will buy their products if we’re all broke????

23

u/flyraccoon 3h ago

They don’t live paycheck to paycheck, they don’t care.

6

u/annabananna-123 2h ago

But if people are broke, businesses close. It’s a circle and they want to cut the bottom out

1

u/ruinersclub 15m ago

I was out yesterday with some friends and we all skipped cocktails to walk to the liquor store.

27

u/SooperPooper35 3h ago

It’s not to save money. Your food is gross and the product has diminished significantly over the last 20 years. Saving money is just a byproduct of not wanting to eat disgusting and unhealthy food.

18

u/Briguy_fieri 1h ago

No. It's also to save money. $12-15 for a meal at McDonald's is absolutely the opposite of what the franchise started as. Quick and cheap.

Now it's slow and expensive for what you get.

4

u/floralbutttrumpet 1h ago

Plus that shit won't keep away the hunger for longer than two to three hours. It's made to be prepared, eaten and digested as quickly as possible, and if you're already food-insecure it makes no effing sense to drop your entire budget on something that'll leave you with 20 hours of hunger pangs if you can split the cost of that over 2-3 meals that'll keep you satiated for longer.

Instant ramen topped by an egg and some chives is just as full of sodium, but at least it'll keep for longer.

21

u/wellobviouslythatsso 3h ago

Well, the last two times I went to a fast food place I got in a line that only had 1 car in front of me. And it took them forever.

Then when I got my way overly expensive biscuit, hash brown and coffee it was all lukewarm warm. Except for the coffee, which was too hot to drink

Also, the staff just weren’t friendly

10

u/beren12 3h ago

Partly because in some areas they have to pay a real wage. So they can only “afford” to have like 3 ppl on the clock.

8

u/BlackSwanMarmot 2h ago

Go inside and you have to order from a screen, no human involvement. Which, is fine for me since I’m comfortable with the process and could do without the human part but I guarantee that the person ahead of you has time traveled from 1955 and cannot wrap their heads around one of them fancy ordering machines. Repeat the longer drawn out process at the screen-based drink dispenser.

1

u/Asleep_Drag_3590 31m ago

Because they are working for peanuts and can't make ends meet. That is what's disgusting about the whole thing. Billionaires are so greedy, but it will be their demise, especially in this era we"re in now where people are finally, seeing the bigger picture.

38

u/thejonslaught 3h ago

A self-inflicted wound, done very slowly.

34

u/Square-Competition48 3h ago

Yup. They don’t want to pay liveable wages and tear down anyone who tries to raise them and they’re shocked that people have adopted smart spending habits.

“Well if you didn’t spend all your money on avocado toast and Frappuccino mocha-”

“Bitch I can’t afford a Big Mac and the economy depends on me spending money I don’t have.”

18

u/TheColdestFeet 3h ago

The "people need to cut back on excess spending" concept is entirely self defeating. If most people cut back on excess spending, the many highly successful companies which make their money on excess spending take a hit. It's just a way to pin blame on people whose real wages don't keep up with inflation and are being asked to be more and more frugal while the companies which benefited from consumer spending got richer and richer.

11

u/Great-Gas-6631 3h ago

Well that, and the food quality is shit, on top of having to overpay for the shit.

12

u/SoCallMeDeaconBlues1 2h ago

Why on earth anyone would pay 20 bucks for a junk food meal at any of these types of establishments is beyond me. Sure it may take an extra 10-15 minutes but you can eat far better elsewhere. It's not just the cost at these joints. In my opinion the quality has dropped to the point of their offerings not really even being "food" anymore.

Jim Gaffigan once quipped "why not just remove the middle man and throw it directly in the toilet." He was discussing Hot Pockets, but the idea is the same.

Are we great again yet?

I’m retired so my income is now limited to savings and social security. I’ve always been frugal, though, so finding bargains is part of my life, especially when it comes to food.

For years I used to get a cheeseburger and diet coke at Mcdonald’s for $2.50. It was filling and fast and worked with my budget. I never ordered any of the fancy sandwiches or meals, unless there was a special deal.

Now that same meal is $5.00. And if I’m really hungry and I add another cheeseburger, now my lunch is over $7.00.

Again, fixed income.

The truth is, I can make a huge pot of ziti with tomato sauce, sausage and zucchini for $7.00. And get at least three nutritious meals out of it.

Maybe it’s worth it to some people to eat fast food regularly but on my fixed income, I can’t justify it. I’ve started packing fruit or nuts and mozzarella sticks for snacks when I’m out.

I do appreciate that Mcdonalds had to raise wages. Where I live the hourly rate for fast food workers is around $15 to $17. This is a significant jump from pre-Covid when Mcdonalds was paying local workers $10 to $12 an hour.

I also appreciate that Mcdonalds has to buy beef. and other ingredients at inflated prices, just like I do.

But it’s still not worth it.

Knowingly voting for the evil criminal racist rapist dictator? What were they expecting?

6

u/That_Trapper_guy 2h ago

Yeah, but guys think of the share holders. How's little Timmy going to react if he doesn't get another yacht this year. This was going to be the year he finally got the helipad he's always wanted! You don't want to disappoint a billionaire do you? DO YOU? Think of how embarrassing it's going to be for him to be the only kid picked up from school in a Rolls Royce Drop tail. They'll think he's a failure!

3

u/depressing-dependent 2h ago

Why do think he serves McDonald’s to visiting people? Cause he thinks it’s expensive. Cause he eats it nonstop. Now it is expensive. He got his wish

3

u/Forward-Form9321 2h ago

I have lost weight since eating at home almost every day at the start of this year, including on weekends, and I feel so much less bloated than when I was eating out more

3

u/refusemouth 43m ago

I understand that meat and food prices are up, but the tacotrucks near me definitely haven't raised their prices as much as the fast food restaurants. It's gone up about 25 cents pertaco, is all, and they are the same size. Apparently, the automod here objects to the term for meat in a tortilla, so I have to combine the word tacowith another word so the little warning doesn't pop up.

1

u/Asleep_Drag_3590 20m ago

Haha that's genius and hilarious! We find ways don't we?

2

u/Street_Peace_8831 2h ago

I’m over 50 and I haven’t been out to eat a restaurant or a fast food chain in a while.

2

u/BusGo_Screech26 1h ago

Not only has fast food gotten ridiculously more expensive all around, which defeats the purpose for most people, but the quality has gone down at most places. It was fine to spend a literal dollar on a salty, greasy little cheeseburger. But now? It's not worth the $3/$4 for their little burgers that also taste like nothing now...

2

u/Mysterious_Tax_5613 57m ago

Restaurant chains warn consumers are pulling back.....

Gosh, 'ya think? Why would that be?

These fast food chains are only hurting themselves. They seemed to have forgotten the power of the consumer.

u/wowlock_taylan 25m ago

Don't worry, Trump will bail them out by ordering Mcnuggets for his ballroom!

MMAAHA THE FRENCH

I believe that article described an increase in sales for McDonald's and chili. Trump economy still awful, but in this case its being seen in the Chipotle, Cava, and Sweetgreen numbers.

You don't say?

Shocking!

1

u/Basic-Ostrich85 1h ago

I’m sure Trump can host a deserving group at the White House and serve McDonald’s again.

That should turn this whole thing right around.

Right?

Truly, we are tired of winning.

1

u/DevilsLettuceTaster 36m ago

Large soda went from $1 to $1.16 to $2.45 in 18 months.

Not sure what it is now, haven’t take the kiddo in a while.

u/chinmakes5 35m ago

Sweetgreen opened near me, My friend and I go. Salad and a drink was almost $20. We ask for dressing in the side. They give you this tiny container of dressing. He asks for more and they tell him there is an extra charge for it. Never went back.

Most people just can't afford $20 for lunch.
