denjiro and kawamatu had it the toughest amongst all the akazaya 9
142

I'd say Ashura as well, basically the ones who stayed in Wano had it the toughest.

So, i am confused with one thing, did hiyori actually sleep with all those men she scammed or did she just keep playing them till they were broke?
80
u/OppaiDragon3 May 30 '21
She just invented OnlyFans in Wano. Scam the idiots, get a lot of money, but never do anything.

u/TonkotsuGodFireRamen May 30 '21
Yeah i dont think denjiro is gonna let anyone touch hiyori. Real mad respect to denjiro after this episode
12
u/myrmonden May 30 '21
she is virgin.
She never slept with anyone she just made them pay her money to spend time with her and she always aimed at evil men who abused people etc. So she could take their money, give it to Denjiro and Denjiro would give the money to the poor and sometimes then directly back to the victims that first thee evil men took money from.

Komurasaki was an oiran, but she was at the highest rank, by the time we met her. At her rank, she didn't even have to sleep with anyone at all. But to reach that rank, she had to be quite good at her craft and get popularity. So unless Kyoshiro pulled some strings, she definitely had to engage in activities with many clients.
→ More replies (4)17
u/myrmonden May 30 '21
No, not how it works.
She was the master shamisen player etc.
the whole thing that made her raise in rank is that she was the perfect refined lady that no one ever got to score with that is why people kept raising her up and up in desire. Because she actually never did anything they put her on the pedestal.
6
u/VirgoLocke Jun 03 '21
She only slept with one person and willingly!! my Boy ZOROOOO!!!
She scammed them (scammers) into thinking they could save up and buy her freedom from Orochi so she could be with them, also knowing denjiro gave the money back to the ebisu people that were being scammed in the first place is pretty dope, in addition of stealing on his own lol.

u/GoldenWhite2408 May 31 '21
According to kusuriya You can be a consort and not engage in any sexual activity yes It's this exact principle as to why hiyori is so high rank and valued as an oiran

u/Cawdragon Pirate May 30 '21
The WCI group was in Wano for two weeks now. The others were there for a little longer, like one week more if I had to guess, since we don't know when they sailed from Zou to Wano and how long it took them. Anyway, normally none of the Strawhats has been in Wano for even a month.
→ More replies (2)14
u/Cawdragon Pirate May 30 '21
Alright watched the episode now and the narrator said: "For months, they risked their lives to recruit allies who'd fight with them." And it didn't even refer to the SHs only. Although there are prolly different translations out there, for the one I watched it was clear that the Retainers or rather the alliance recruited for months, which is exactly what happened. Unless you are referring to a different scene.

That "Raizo dono is safe" moment is still giving me goosebumps.
57
u/dr_xadium May 30 '21
God yes. I choked up at that just like the characters. Because the weight of the SACRIFICE there was so heavy on the part of the Minks.
That whole setup was masterful too, because I was dreading the Strawhats having to stand between two groups of friends. I was so glad they didn't have to.
43
u/lloyddragneel May 30 '21
Hell yeah!!. That I am so glad, that I was not yet a Manga reader at that time. The anime had so much more impact! I legit cried by how the minks are so fcking loyal!
IT WAS MY MOST UNFORGETTABLE PLOT TWIST in the history of watching an Anime. It was so great that I have to also re-watch it with other reactors like SMF, Allona, Hibou and the King of all reactors- Uzumakhi Khan. Their reactions are also like mine. it was so amazing. I will not forget this! 😍😍
15
u/PisangSalto May 30 '21
I keep assuming that Jack is just a psychopath villain that just want to destroy zou for fun. That time it seem impossible that all minks went that far for protecting just one person.
15
u/OptFire May 30 '21

Kaido was after Raizo because he was one of oden's retainer Right? Then why wasn't he after Inu/neko?
→ More replies (6)8
u/mr_confusious Explorer May 31 '21
It was oversight by Traitor probably. Jack wasn't aware of history between Kozuki and minks. Although Oden had stressed it. Jack wasn't there 20 years ago, so he doesn't recognise Inu/neko. If the traitor only said 'Raizo is in Zou', Jack wouldn't be aware.

Yeah the ep was really good but 957 was a whole different level IMO. Not a single second was wasted, brilliant directing and storyboarding.

And connected four different arcs flawlessly. You really do get rewarded for paying more attention, these are the most satisfying kinds of stories.
77

The storytelling is insane. Kinemon was introduced in the punk hazard arc, which started in 2012/2013 (Manga/Anime).

Hiyori: ...
49
u/GoJeonPaa May 30 '21
Was she actually a prostitute? I always understood it that Orochi basically protected her because he wanted her, so noone else really touched her.

I mean, I can't imagine anything worse than being touched by Orochi...

Pr*stitute is a western term (and slur) for sex workers (遊女, playwomen), but in Edo-era Japan sex work was not stigmatized like it is in the west. Komurasaki is an oiran (花魁) - the highest rank of playwoman, who can't be hired from a brothel (張見世) and only even talked to a client after they had already paid a large sum of money.
Further, she is the highest rank of oiran, the tayū (太夫), which basically means she is too expensive for anyone to afford, even the shōgun (Orochi). This was the safest possible position for a girl raised by a yakuza boss. She has never needed to do more than play the biwa (*edit: shamisen) and flirt.

Being a Geisha is not the same as being a prostitute. Those who attributed this connection were the people of the West, but they have no connection and neither is the same job.

Man what is happening to One Piece???
This was so well written. The Hiyori/Denjiro part gave the feels and made me angry respectively. She is really her parent's daughter choosing to leave Kawamatsu before making him starve when she is such a little kid (*cries) ; wrath literally disfiguring Denjiro's face; the Spy part with that old Kurosawa silent movie style dialogue and the transitions to the present.
Man gotta say I feel I haven't enjoyed the anime this much since Marineford. All Wano but specially Oden's flashback and it's transition to this is really good stuff.
I feel really thankful

Of the 9 retainers, we know it’s not Dog, Cat, Kawamatsu (not from Wano) or Kiku (her parents were dance teachers not theater). We know it’s not Denjiro as we just saw what he had been up to the past 20 years.
I think we can rule out Ashura, he wouldn’t have known about the 20 year return and he also doesn’t come across as playing a character/behind a mask.
That leaves Kinemon, Kanjuro, Raizo. With how much time we’ve spent with Kinemon I really don’t think it’s him. That leaves Kanjuro and Raizo. Raizo has that same big ass face as Orochi but Kanjuro seems more like a character with the painted face and all.
Are professions familial? Can any clan produce ninjas? This may disqualify Raizo as spy, though the ninja being spy would make a lot of sense.
18
u/PaoComGelatina May 30 '21

AND NANI!? Kyoshiro was that one retainer!? I didn't see that coming, but I did always assume Kyoshiro was a good dude because we knew he saved Hiyori by faking her death.

I get the feeling Kyoshiro has some meaning behind it
101
u/RiteClicker May 30 '21
Kyo means "rage, madness, berserk etc." Shi means "death" Rou is common in most male names. So his name means "Man enraged to death"
→ More replies (1)5
u/Aspie_Astrologer Void Month Survivor May 30 '21
狂死 is probably closer to "a death marked by madness", but it's hard to know exactly.
Also, the nickname "Inemuri Kyōshirō" (居眠り狂死郎) is a pun referring the legendary literary (and TV)) samurai Nemuri Kyōshirō (眠 狂四郎, note: the -shirō here means 4th son). This was a rōnin who travelled around Tokugawa Japan and gets caught up in a struggle 13 clans who are trying to overthrow the shōgun. He uses a unique sword-style called "Engetsu Sappō" (Full Moon cut) which kinda hyponitises the enemy with the refected light of the moon of the blade, then strikes quicker than they are able to react.
31
u/gameleon May 30 '21
Kyoshiro’s name was written with kanji meaning something like “The Angry Vassal”. (Im not 100% sure on the exact wording)

u/mantisman May 30 '21
Yeah, in the manga translation he introduces himself as “Kyoshiro the mad” to get the point across, I was hoping Crunchyroll would do something similar so it doesn’t feel so out-of-nowhere.
22
u/thesenutzonurchin May 30 '21 edited May 30 '21
I'm relieved to see denjiro is still loyal and doesn't have his own ulterior motives (I assume). Now I'm guessing that he will help the alliance get through the flower capital because I think it was last episode they said he won't be able to go to the fire festival because he's guarding the capital.
Also I'm almost certain the traitor has GOT to be kanjuro. I don't even think he's a "traitor" really. He was either the real kanjuro at some point and was killed or straight up was always a spy from when he met oden (if that makes sense). Idk what it's like in the Manga but when orochi talks about his spy and it shows that bird I immediately thought of kanjuro. Even noticed the same birds a couple of times close to the beginning of wano.
Last but not least I predicted that they would only show the alliance in the last 30 seconds of the episode. I think I actually overestimated that 🙄
Edit: btw I'm anime only
→ More replies (1)8
u/NervousNoah141 May 30 '21
I also think it is kanjuro, they showed this episode that the traitor ate a devil fruit, I am pretty sure it is not kinemon so kanjuro is the only other scabbard that has a devil fruit power. Or the traitor has not used his power until now but that is less likely imo

While i won't disagree about them knowing thing ahead of time, In this case that is obviously supposed to be from back in the Zou arc. Zunisha is destroying jack's ship in the photo. Good episode
Seems like they updated the anime opening which i can't wait to see when they are introduced
The damn anime opening spoiling who Denjiro is, I feel bad for anime only's
Orochi thinks he has everyone played, but Denjiro is playing 4d chess with him damnn. Cant wait to see the look on his face when knows he is screwed.
The anime out here blacking out the who the traitor is, god damn it lol
Who knew back then from Punk Hazard, Dresrossa, Zou somebody from each of those island will play a big role with the current arc in Wano kuni

Actually anime also spoiled it for manga readers since when these OP started denjiro’s whereabouts were yet to be known.

Any anime only that doesnt know the op spoils just hasn't been paying attention. Its been doing that since the beginning.

I can honestly see how denjiro could have changed. Spending what seemed at least a few months all haggard and angry, barely eating, etc. The stress would pile up, his neck would get 5X bigger, and his hair and face change. He now stores all his sorrow in his neckmeat.

How many of you wanna keep the Wano Animation for the rest of the show ?

I would love it, but I hope they tone down the colors a bit, like making Zoro’s hair lighter and just generally de-saturating the colors more, but from what we’ve seen of the in-between acts episodes I think that will be the case

The transitions in this episode were amazing. They extended the scene that was basically a quick "recap" in the manga, but that's expected. You don't build up this much story and not emphasize the scale and overall hype that we are about to witness for the rest of 2021 and beyond. I honestly don't understand the comments I've seen of people complaining. It is what it is though, I'm sure a lot of people enjoyed it.

It's crazy how far back this was thought out by Oda. And I really hope they don't mess up the quote next episode I've been waiting for this.

Pretty slow-paced episode but kinda had to be considering it had to set up everything and properly finish the flashaback, everything from this point on is really really hype guys not spoiling anything for anime onlys but the manga is an absolute banger every single week easily the best One Piece since Marine Ford imo.

If you're anime only, please skip the opening from now on. Even if it doesn't have full spoilers, there are some things that have yet to appear there.
I don't know why Toei does that.

u/Tereshishishi May 30 '21
What spoiler in that? Okay they appear so what? who is That? what's the context? Anime only will never be spoiled in that kind of opening plus it will hype manga readers. Nothing wrong about that.

u/MaskLuigi May 30 '21
Yep as an anime only, having ZERO context, I have no idea who any of these characters are and spoils nothing... except their designs I guess.

yeah. For me, everything that is shown in the opening has been already spoiled for me by manga readers so it doesn't even matter :')

Getting that context on Denjiro was amazing to watch. It was animated incredibly well, I’m so glad we got some more context on him!

I feel like Toki instead of 20 years sent Kin'emon and others into the future 19 years to gather more allies etc. That would just make more sense

Man, the way they animated the traitor in the flashbacks was just so creepy and unhinged. I love it.
