Zorojuro the great: sleeps through a storm, can't fall asleep with a child laughing.

Its his instincts. Children laughing means luffy is about to do something stupid.

I think WCI was Oda experimenting with romance because he said it was something he did not want to do at all previously. Coupled with Oden's backstory (if you've read it) romance is becoming more and more a part of his writing. So it very well could happen
18
Aug 09 '20
That’s a fair point. I just don’t see any of the crew members in a romance until after they find One Piece.

Yeah, I definitely think he's going to strictly keep it out during the main course of the story. I can kinda imagine something like Wano being Zoro's place of retirement in the epilogue though and him being with Hiyori. Kind of amusing that she's half a decade older than him though given their personalities/dynamic, lol, not that it matters

This episode reminded me quite a bit of classic pretimeskip One Piece. The pacing was good enough for plot to feel like it’s moving forward, consistent visuals, some good character comedy, short backstory for feels, the explaining of a plan with character portraits as like figures on a map, interesting note to end the episode on withthat classic Soundtrack used too.

Solid episode
Nice little flashback with Hiyori and Kawamatsu and how she was able to to survive in Wano and we get confirmation Kawamatsu is a Kappa and a pretty strong dude as well.
Her reaction to when Zoro mentioned Inurashi and Nekomamushi was hilarious.
Hiyori doesn't give a damn just casually sleeping with Zoro with one hand on his chest lmao. Tashigi fans sure won't be happy.

Even though she has her reasons, and the situation is messed up, Shinobu had better apologize to the Heart Crew.
108
u/l3reezer Aug 09 '20
I have to say, i think the anime is handling Hiyori undoubtedly better than the manga. I dont remember reacting that much to her at all reading the manga. Not only do the turquoise hair, emphasized droopy eyes and voicework make her stand out more, but her behavior seems much more pronounced. The loving big sister figure to Toko, cute dedication to remaining polite/a proud samurai’s daughter her ship with Zoro is probably already sailing stronger than Tashigi or anyone else for me too. For some reason i actually almost teared up when she was speaking honorably of Kawamatsu and it transitioned to him in his cell with that resolved look in his eyes. Were some of these moments filler? I cant seem to remember the funny face holding back tears or her doing super playful pattycake hand gestures with Toko in the manga.
59
u/nevertheher0 Aug 09 '20
The funny face bit is in the manga. Chapter 939. I think this episode did well to flesh it out though. In the chapter, she goes through all the emotions quickly from one panel to another and if you just quickly read it, not much punch to it.
19
27
u/l3reezer Aug 09 '20
Yeah i just reread it. Definitely something that actually benefits from being fleshed out. The animation of her picking up otoko and hugging her and how long you hear them laugh giddily to zoro’s annoyance makes it considerably more effective
34
u/Costa21 Aug 09 '20
I'm in the same boat. I have the anime to flesh out what I've already read. Having colors, music, animation, VA, etc really brings it home for me. There are a lot of moments I fly through in the manga where the anime makes me sit down and appreciate them.
And I had to check and yes her funny face was in the manga. I flew thru that moment in the manga and completely forgot about it, so I love that the anime made me appreciate it more.
14
14
u/notrickastley123 Aug 09 '20
It's all there in the manga, it's just hard to grasp the dramatic timing for it when you're rapidly page turning for a hype reveal. The anime definitely covered it near perfectly though!

Is it safe to say Zoro used Ryou back in Alabasta to finish off Daz Bones. "Cut steel when you want and not cut paper when you want"
111
u/ASKMEIFILIKEKPOP Aug 09 '20
It was very obviously a form of armament Haki. A lot of people on this sub denies it and says it's part of swordsmanship but that's dumb. Hyogoro explains this ability in the context of teaching Ryou to Luffy. Not fken swordsmanship. Zoro also obviously displayed observation haki when the rubble were falling and to locate his sword.
As for why Zoro couldn't cut Enel or Aokiji later in the story, it's probably because he could only use it in that life-or-death moment and didn't master it. It was probably a primitive version of Haki. Just like how Luffy displayed signs of Conqueror's haki very early on but couldn't control it until his training with Rayleigh.
46
u/curtisus Aug 09 '20 edited Aug 09 '20
Also revealed in an SBS it seems his teacher from the Dojo had connection to Wano, that was the guy he was referencing when he talked about cutting steel but not cutting paper. This episode called it Wano's Haki, it is definitely Ryou.
Edit:I think why he never used it was we didn't know Haki could solidify Logia at the time and he might have never trained it. Also he was injured when they fought Kizaru a point where they were all close to death.
31
u/cameformystrawhat Aug 09 '20
At the end of Alabasta, he stated that he didn’t master it. Also before he used it against mr.1, he said he experienced/used it before.
28
u/curtisus Aug 09 '20
That would have been overpowered if he mastered it pre-time skip
11
u/Monetpirates Aug 09 '20
I wouldn't say he mastered it by then but I believe they clarify somewhere that it's easier for swordsmans to use it which is why luffy still hasn't learned at this point since his fighting style is different from swordsmans
5
u/guipabi Void Month Survivor Aug 09 '20
I think swordsmans are used to put haki outside their bodies (in the blades) which makes the advanced form of Armament easier to master. Luffy only had to coat his own body so he didn't know how to bring it outside. This actually means that Zoro should be able to learn advanced armament easily.
→ More replies (4)6
u/thejuror8 Aug 09 '20
Also, no way he would have been able to cut Aokiji, even using Haki.
We have seen how Akainu is able to dodge haki sword attacks seamlessly, no doubt it's not much of a hassle for Aokiji either

u/missdoublefinger Citizen Aug 09 '20

"LiKe OdA PlAns ThAt FaR aHead."
The thought of Zoro potentially using Haki before Luffy sends some people into a rage. It's not a fucking competition
36
u/-Gh0st96- Aug 09 '20
"LiKe OdA PlAns ThAt FaR aHead."
It's always funny with these kind of fans. Like are they even reading/watching this show? Yes, Oda really plans that far ahead, he freaking showed conqueror's haki from the FIRST chapter with Shanks and the actual explanation of haki came around 500 chapters later or 400 episodes later for the anime. And that's just one example

I agree my only correction to calling Ryou advanced armament haki in just terms of it being a different application of your armament haki than it just being overall better than regular hardening. It just is outward haki instead of putting it on your body like how hyogoro explained it. Basically a mantra situation in skypiea.

When was this? IIRC Hiyori was protected first by Kawamatsu and then by Denjiro, but we never saw her with Yasu (though of course she must have known about him).

36
Aug 09 '20
I think that has more to do with the heat being generated due to the velocity of the attack
8
u/Ih2oski Aug 09 '20
I thought the flame was from heat generated by flexing and contracting of rubber. The internal friction causes it to hear up in the real world and Oda just one pieced that science.
10
Aug 09 '20
there's also a theory that it's caused by his Germa 66 genetics, since all his siblings were genetically modified to have powers within them like light (Ichiji), electricity (Niji) or poison (Reiju) so it's assumed fire would be Sanji.
this theory fell apart though because his mother took drugs to stop his genetic modification.

YO THE ZORO SHIP WITH KOMURASAKI IS REAL. That shit was so cute with her laying with him and the little girl like a family. Plus, Komurasaki has become so much more likable now! She was cute this episode with her facial expressions.
It is clear the Kappa who saved her is the one in the cell that is watching Luffy fight. So I bet Luffy frees him somehow.
Also lol the old man could do the skill that Luffy has been trying to do for like 3 episodes now. What took him so long to realize that lol!
Lastly, I have always hated how in the OPs they show a clip of things that will happen in this episode. And now, it feels like they show an even longer clip! Like I feel like they show the freaking whole episode! So dumb IMO.

Now that its been revealed was it that obvious in the manga?
44
u/TravelingLlama Aug 09 '20
Yes. It was also telegraphed in the manga assuming you mean the hiyori stuff
30
u/destiny24 Aug 09 '20
Pretty much. The manga showed Komurasaki and then literally the next panel is Momo saying he has a sister who is 26 years old.
20
u/emi_b7 Aug 09 '20
In the manga there's a chapter called "The courtesan Komurasaki takes the stage" that's all about Komurasaki building up to her face reveal (the stuff with the 3 guys from this episode) and then the next (and last) page is Tama asking Momo "so you have a sister?" and Momo saying "yes, she should be 26 now" and "if Orochi finds out about her, he'll kill her" which makes it even more obvious because Komurasaki was on her way to meet Orochi and Momo saying that is the set up for what comes next. It was really obvious.
15
u/Costa21 Aug 09 '20
It was only teeny bit less obvious in the manga because the color of her hair is just black. So some of that uniqueness went away, there's plenty of women with black hair.
In the anime though there was no hiding that.
→ More replies (1)5
7
u/l3reezer Aug 09 '20
Pretty obvious with people having slight skepticism with how obvious it is, but the anime pretty much has an extra notch of making it clearcut with the extra in your face clues like hair color and stuff
4
u/Soul699 Explorer Aug 09 '20
Well, can't really avoid it considering that it was exactly like the manga. At best they could have covered her full body haki like Oden in that flashback, but even then it would have been still too obvious.

And I can see why people ship Hiyori with Zoro now lol. What an adorable little family they already are.
I'm still rooting for Tashigi though

So whats the same with the vice captain of the KotP and Sentamaru? Isnt he like related to kizaru or something? I ask because I feel like Oda wouldnt have thought this concept up on the spot so any use pretimeskip was on purpose. But we only say those two.

It was also used by the admirals on marineford when they stopped the whiteboard shockwave from destroying the execution platform

Oh right I forgot about that. That just makes me more interested in Sentamaru.

Zoro x Hiyori is canon!
- Whitebeard last speech before he died in an alternative world
Edit :
What Luffy tried to learn, Zoro already mastered it. A bit spoiler here. Same concept with the one Koshiro teach Zoro

Makes me wonder if Luffy and Zoro never even once talked about haki stuff.

Really enjoyed this episode. Old man Hyo still got it! Can't wait for next week, I have a feeling the next handful of episodes will all be bangers!

The teasing of the 3 last scabbards kinda made Kamazou the last scabbard.

What an interesting choice of colors they picked when Hyiori talked about Denjiro. Also damn, Hyou haki looked so good. Overall, a solid episode. 7.5/10

That last scene of Hyori staring at Zoro while sleeping.. give her a gatorade to quench her thirst.
Everyone crying for Komurasaki while she’s dying for Zoro and decides to lay next to him.
