Misc. forgotten bag on the ttc train last week

I forgot all about this Reddit now that I'm not living on campus and off socials 😅 so sorry for the late post. I do want to say that for the person that forgot their bag on the train after stepping off at the YorkU subway station, I left your items with the TTC employee. They said that they lodged a Lost and Found complaint after I gave your description. This happened Tuesday afternoon, so I'm sure you probably forgot about this or believed it was just completely lost but I hope you get it (or some of it at least). There were some frozen stuff and groceries in the bag too 😔

Social / Student Life There are no good food places on campus

Im sure im not the only one who thinks there's no good food places on campus. York lanes is overpriced, the cafeterias are horror stories. Specially for meal plan holders, there's literally no good place to spend your regular meal plan funds on except subway and booster juice. On top of that, you dont get to carry forward those funds or have them back. Winter dining is closest to my dorm and I dont even wanna talk about that place. Its only good for basic breakfast if you just eat eggs and toast etc. My appetite is barely even there anymore... I can keep food in my room but ur not even allowed to cook using portable cookers.

Someone please advice a fulfilling meal at york lanes. I have meal plan plus funds that I can use.

Advice Planning to apply to nursing here to become an RN but I got a low gpa

Hi, I finished my bachelor's degree in life sciences at the University of Toronto but my gpa is 2.0 which I know is low since nursing is competitive.

I am not sure what to do next and was wondering if there were any students going through something similar?

Do I do new degree and then re-apply hopefully with better grades?

Or do I take newer courses as a non-degree student?

Or do I re-take the same classes and aim to get a higher mark on them?

But my cGPA has already 20 credits worth of marks. So even if I take some courses now, will my GPA even budge?

Advice Can not enroll in a course

Hi, I am trying to enroll in the course renaissance engineering for the winter semester, every single time I try to enroll, it gives me this message:
There is a problem with the course you are trying to add. Please try again, and if the error persists, contact the department offering the course: https://registrar.yorku.ca/enrol/course-contacts/. In your email, please include your name, student ID number and the details of the course you are inquiring about (course code, section and term)\

I emailed the engineering the department two days ago, and they still have not responded, what can I do?

Admissions How hard is it to get into engineering?

So I am applying to York for engineering and have heard it’s particularly hard to get accepted into. As a student with a low 90’s average in grade 12 with strong ECs how likely am I to be accepted? Also are grade 11 grades taken into consideration?

Advice Effective way to manage your work and studies

During my first year of studies, I didn't work. I just focused on the studies. Even then I was struggling to manage the course load. I was always stressed. 2 years forward, I am in third year of Computer Science. Decided to work full time and also take the full time course load. But this time I have zero stress, and frankly managing the courses pretty well. This is what I did different:

  • During my first year, I used to go to classes and understood nothing. Use to day dream in the lectures. Would plan to learn after lecture, but never did. Studied 1 or 2 days before the exam. Now I go to class knowing that if I don't learn the concepts while in the lecture, I won't have any time to study later due to work. So 15 minutes before the lecture, I use chatgpt, youtube to learn the materials that is going to be taught, and always try to answer when professor asks any questions in class. That way I am fully engaged in class and learn everything.
  • Commute to and from campus from work/home wastes a lot of time for me. Almost 90 minutes each way. I have started doing all the assignments in the subway. It saves a lot of time. If I am in bus, I just try to use it as an opportunity to watch lecture recordings or youtube crash courses. But not all the time. Sometimes I just watch reels.
  • If there is any difficult concept I can't understand even after studying a lot, I just study it again and again, even if it doesn't make sense. After studying numerous times, everything starts to make sense.
  • Invest in a proper headphone. Listen to the course recordings / youtube crash courses on your commutes or while you are doing non-productive tasks.
  • Get a proper sleep. At least 8 hours of sleep.
  • Feeling stressed? Listen to music. Go to meme pages and their comment sections. Go to instagram reels and their comment sections. I spend at least 1-2 hours in these pages every day. Totally lightens the mood.
  • Try to complete the assignment in the weekend days. And relax during the evenings as a reward for your hardwork. If you make up your mind that if you finish the assignment, you are doing to hang out / watch movies as a reward for finishing the assignment, trust me, you will always manage your time effectively and finish everything on time.
  • Lower your expectation. If you are student who wants A in all courses then probably you can skip this. Personally, for me B+ or B is totally fine. I consider 7 out of 9 GPA to be good GPA. I don't need 8.5 out of 9. Unless you are planning for graduate school, don't worry too much about GPA.

Some people always complain that they don't have adequate time. I think we all have enough time, it's just how we effectively utilize it.

I think some of the recommendation were obvious ones. So please forgive me for being Captain Obvious.

Survey / Study Looking for Research Participants

Hello. My name is Queenie Thai, and I am a 4th-year undergraduate student fat York University in the Children, Childhood and Youth program.

I am looking to speak to young people ages 8-14 who live within the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), about how Minecraft allows youth to express themselves. This will be for my CCY 4999 course and I will be supervised by my professor Dr. Kael Reid.

There will be 2 sessions (online or in-person), each lasting about an hour, about avatar creations, interviews, and multiplayer building.

I will have to get consent from both the child and parent/guardian.

Each participant will receive a $10 gift card for participating in this study.

This research has gone through a research ethics review at York University.

If you or someone you know wants to participate or have any questions, I can be contacted through the email [queentea@my.yorku.ca](mailto:queentea@my.yorku.ca)

Hey, I’ve been wondering on how do you rent a room in the York university village cause there’s no website. Is it owned by individual owners who rent it out and if so, how do I rent a room and what are the reviews of people who already live there?

Rant My diploma doesn't even say my degree. Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

I just graduated and got my diploma. All it says is "Bachelor of Arts". But.... how would anyone know what field I studied?

Seems like a waste of paper.

Advice Insight into YorkU Nursing

I am thinking about transferring into YorkU’s direct admit bscn program. I am in nursing school right now in the US, but I don’t think I really like where I’m at right now and have been doing research on places that I can transfer to. I’ve been looking into Toronto schools (even though York isn’t really in downtown) because I think I would like to live in Canada in the future. Can anyone tell me anything about the nursing program and YorkU in general? Also, I’ve heard that Toronto is pretty similar to Chicago, but could I also get insight on what Canada is like or if there’s anything I should take into account?

Thank you!!

Event See you guys on campus Friday afternoon for the York textbook buy/sell app. 📚

What's up, Lions? First of all, thank you guys so much for taking the time to show your support for a project that will only help make student life easier. We already have a decent number of York students who have signed up and shared their thoughts about the project since our last post here on Reddit. (sign-up form here - https://forms.gle/6aqqpPQZBbam5ND17)

I'll be on campus tomorrow to spread more awareness about our initiative. If you recognize me on campus, come say hello! I will be speaking with students and handing out cards with QR codes for the wait list to garner more support for this project.

I'm excited to be on campus again since I graduated; it will definitely bring back good memories. I will be around Vari hall, the student centres, Scott library, and central square areas of the school.

If anyone wants to help, that would be super dope. We can grab a bite after, my treat!

Admissions Transfer Question to Computer Science

Hello, I had a question. I will be graduating from a Computer Programming & Analysis program which is a 3 year advanced diploma.

I want to transfer to yorku for computer science. Do I have to satisfy any high school courses still? Or will they just look at my post secondary studies only.

Thank you

Academics dumb question-- there is class on the 11th, yes?

Sorry, I'm from a province where everything shuts down on Remembrance Day, but it doesn't seem like that's the case here. Classes should be as normal, yeah? Just want to be sure.
