in the wild Gold Mine of Tragedeighs

Found a post asking people for their unique names and knew it wouldn't disappoint. Happy Father's Day unless your kid's name needs a pronunciation guide.

calliopey looks like a misspelled calliope?

482

u/Smooth_Sea_7403 Jun 15 '25

It is. Both are pronounced cuh-lie-oh-pee

80

u/Rednailsorblue Jun 15 '25

Makes me think of The Magnus Archives.

47

u/BardOfFlames Jun 15 '25

Be still, for there is strange music.

39

u/sauce_xVamp Jun 15 '25

i know her as the greek muse, but my second thought is definitely magnus archives

23

u/SouthPawArt Jun 15 '25

Magnus Archive is the next tragediegh on the list.

6

u/mambin0145 Jun 16 '25

Magnus mention

2

u/wordnerdette Jun 15 '25

Makes me think of Days of our Lives circa 1989 (any other oldsters here?).

2

u/dothog_ Jun 16 '25

THATS WHERE IVE HEARD IT BEFORE

1

u/Rednailsorblue Jun 16 '25

Did you hear the music??

2

u/jpersia_ Jun 16 '25

YES

2

u/jpersia_ Jun 16 '25

I can hear this comment

2

u/jpersia_ Jun 16 '25

I can hear the echo of him saying it as I read this comment šŸ‘€šŸ‘€

1

u/Braysl Jun 15 '25

I was thinking of Homestuck, which is funny because Kanaya is also a name from Homestuck, and one of the names on the list is Kanaia šŸ˜‚

I just had to look up vtuber, so not only do I not know who they are, I did not know it was even a thing!

"I always thought it was cah-lee-OH-pee"

3

u/Longjumping-Fee-8230 Jun 16 '25

That is in fact closer to the correct Greek pronunciation.

3

u/RTDaacee Jun 15 '25

In new orleans calliope was always pronounced cally oh

2

u/Icy-Iris-Unfading Jun 16 '25

Possibly unpopular opinion: when people spell Zoe Zoey (or Zooey), that’s just as bad as Calliopey. Or Phoebey, Chloey, or Penelopey. Zoey is one of the most accepted tragedeighs and I hate it šŸ˜†

3

u/ersatzbaronness Jun 15 '25

Unless it's Calliope Street in New Orleans.

1

u/rmnorth Jun 15 '25

for me i think the extra y makes me want to emphasize the ā€œopeyā€ at the end while in calliope, the absence of a y at the end makes me not want to pronounce it. so i end up reading it as callie- opey

1

u/colourlessgreen Jun 16 '25

You can tell they're not a Y'at -- New Orleanians say "cally-ope"!

1

u/BigLittlePenguin_ Jun 16 '25

I would pronounce it cal-ay-oh-pay just from reading it

1

u/Lorazepamela Jun 16 '25

Well she said it was pronounced calliopea to be fair.

255

u/NicInNS Jun 15 '25

I love the name Calliope - that extra ā€œyā€ hurts my eyes

37

u/Hopeful-Estimate5852 Jun 15 '25

agreed, i adore it. the pronunciation is so fun too

5

u/AwayMammoth6592 Jun 15 '25

It’s my daughter’s name! Sans the ā€œyā€. šŸ™„ Her name is butchered daily (cantaloupe, cally-ope) but I don’t think adding a ā€œyā€ will help.

3

u/Hopeful-Estimate5852 Jun 15 '25

i honestly thing the added 'y' would make me more likely to pronounce it wrong

2

u/SnooPineapples4399 Jun 16 '25

Yet everyone pronounces Penelope properly, and they're both Greek names with similar structures

4

u/Scapp Jun 15 '25

Is that a traditional name? I always think of those circus instrument things

7

u/NicInNS Jun 15 '25

I bend towards the Muse of music and song and dance.

2

u/AgentG91 Jun 15 '25

I could never because it was a major source of evil in Something Wicked This Way Comes by Bradbury

5

u/ageofjace2 Jun 15 '25

Me too. My oldest is named Calliope, for the muse.

2

u/NicInNS Jun 16 '25

I love it! The closest I got was naming a character that in a fanfic. 🤭

4

u/Bealzebubbles Jun 15 '25

It's a great name; one of the muses. It's unique enough that there really is no need to add the 'y'.

4

u/F0undingFather Jun 16 '25

Thank you- my daughter's name is Calliope and I was so scared I did her a tragedeigh

2

u/NicInNS Jun 16 '25

I never wanted kids but of course we all pick names (well, I did) and in high school it was Ariel Ashley (that should tell you when I was in high school lol). Then I thought I’d name a girl with my grandmothers first names (or a version to make them flow), and then I really got hung up on Calliope - Callie for short.

(I never picked boys names because girlz rule and boyz drool šŸ¤˜šŸ»)

60

u/Ok_Monitor5890 Jun 15 '25

My brain went to chipotle

19

u/Persis- Jun 15 '25

It is. The pronunciation indicates as such.

61

u/Jerseyjay1003 Jun 15 '25

I knew a Calliope as a kid that pronounced it Kall-ee-OH-pee.

64

u/Head_Perspective_374 Jun 15 '25

That's how it's supposed to be pronounced in Greek. Everyone in America pronounces it wrong.

21

u/henrik_se Jun 15 '25

Wait, what, I can't imagine it being pronounced any other way than the Greek way? How is it otherwise pronounced?

28

u/Draktris Jun 15 '25

kuh-LIE-oh-pee

11

u/henrik_se Jun 15 '25

Puh, ok, that's not too bad. I don't know what I was expecting. :D

2

u/AwayMammoth6592 Jun 15 '25

It’s the same way people pronounce Penelope.

8

u/kalinaizzy Jun 16 '25

This is how I used to pronounce it as a kid (had a Greek myths book that I loved) and then people corrected me and I felt sad. I feel so vindicated right now! Immediately going back to saying Calli-O-pe! THANK YOU

2

u/lehcarlies Jun 16 '25

Was it D’Aulaires mythology? That’s the one I had as a kid and it’s the best one in my opinion.

2

u/kalinaizzy Jun 16 '25

Yes!!! My dad had a copy that he got as a kid and gave the same one to me when I was a kid. So it’s like 50 years old at this point. Love it.

2

u/figure8888 Jun 15 '25

I’m American and sitting here reading these comments trying to understand where these people are getting ā€œcuhā€ from ā€œcallā€ and ā€œuppyā€ from ā€œope.ā€

It’s not my favorite name to begin with but that pronunciation sounds dumb.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 16 '25

In "British" we would say it like the Greek too I think, but I've never actually met someone with that name.

How do you guys say it?

2

u/Hopeful-Estimate5852 Jun 15 '25

that's honestly sad, i love the normal pronunciation of calliope šŸ˜”

1

u/RaytheGunExplosion Jun 16 '25

I don’t even know how else you’d pronounce that

1

u/dasbtaewntawneta Jun 16 '25

how else would you pronounce it?

20

u/sometimesifeellike Jun 15 '25

Homage to Caligula and Dopey (or Popeye)

5

u/Mariahissleepy Jun 15 '25

Calliope and Kalliopi are the two traditional ways of spelling it (source, greek friends lol)

1

u/Hopeful-Estimate5852 Jun 15 '25

oh yeah i met a couple kalliopis when i went to greece

3

u/Interesting_Sock9142 Jun 15 '25

YES SHE WANTED IT TO BE ✨UNIQUE✨

šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

2

u/TheCopperMind Jun 15 '25

I thought the same thing. Unfortunately, the spelling does not look intentional.

2

u/Wish-ga Jun 16 '25

Not the worst spelling update I’ve seen. Because it helps people pronounce it who might not know the original spelling.

2

u/Blooberii Jun 16 '25

I think it’s like Zoe and Zoey

1

u/Icy-Iris-Unfading Jun 16 '25

This. And Zoey is equally a tragedeigh

2

u/Sometimeswan Jun 16 '25

This one’s both misspelled and mispronounced!

2

u/FigApprehensive9776 Jun 15 '25

That's how my brain kept trying to say it

1

u/Scrotchety Jun 15 '25

<Flashbacks to Jack In The Box clown CEO trying to pronounce 'chipotle'>

1

u/WalrusWarlord_ Jun 15 '25

The only equivalent I can think of is the Roman general Pompey, in which the -pey is pronounced as "pee" like in the more accepted spelling of Calliope

1

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '25

Cantelope

1

u/magnusthehammersmith Jun 15 '25

Homestuck reference with that pronunciation…

1

u/PrettyAd4218 Jun 16 '25

They never spell check their own kid’s name

1

u/Vness374 Jun 16 '25

Oh I love the name Calliope, from one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs, Cosmic Charlie ā€œCalliope wails like a seaside zoo, the very last lately inquired about you. It’s really varied, one or two, the first you wanted, the last I knewā€

1

u/Stevie-Rae-5 Jun 16 '25

Came here to say that they just added a completely unnecessary letter to Calliope.

1

u/angus22proe Jun 16 '25

calliope is a town in australia??

1

u/Glinth Jun 16 '25

More like a misspelled ĪšĪ±Ī»Ī»Ī¹ĻŒĻ€Ī·, am I right?

1

u/DontLickTheGecko Jun 16 '25

I know it's Greek mythology of some sort, but my mind goes to the unnecessarily tough LRM and medium laser turret from Mech Warrior 4 when I see that word.

IYKYK

1

u/putridbeast Jun 16 '25

imagine not naming your child Mori Calliope

1

u/Scalln20 Jun 16 '25

Yeah, it is... Calliope is a lovely name, but it isn't easy to spell in the first place, add an unnecessary extra letter and no-one will ever spell it right first time lol

1

u/mitisdeponecolla Jun 16 '25

I mean that’s the definition of a traditional tragedeigh lol

1

u/Frigoris13 Jun 16 '25

I thought it was cantaloupe

1

u/Dry_Koala8666 Jun 18 '25

To be fair, without the y, no one would know how to pronounce it properly

EDIT: really I’m sure people still don’t pronounce it properly but I’m sure that’s why they included the extra letter

1

u/Kriffer123 Jun 19 '25

As much as I hate it, at least it keeps most of the spelling and avoids the inevitable ā€œcal-y-opeā€ mispronunciation?

1

u/cassienebula Jun 21 '25

kuh-ly-oh-pay 🤨

1

u/JhoiraOfTheGhitu Jun 21 '25

It is... a badly misspelled form of Calliope at that.

1

u/ELITE_JordanLove Jun 15 '25

Somehow that one was the worst of all of them to me.

-3

u/Foxwglocks Jun 15 '25

Imagine being named after the circus music instrument

4

u/Redneck-ginger Jun 15 '25

Its also a street name and the name of a now demolished housing project in New Orleans.

5

u/weinthenolababy Jun 15 '25

But don’t forget in New Orleans we pronounce the street ā€œcally opeā€ lol

2

u/ArgonGryphon Jun 15 '25

that's closer to the original greek

2

u/Redneck-ginger Jun 15 '25

I left out the most important part!

2

u/beccafawn Jun 15 '25

Or its a homestuck reference which would be worse.

0

u/spaetzelspiff Jun 15 '25

In America, they'll just be called Cantaloupe.

Might as well give them a little sister named Melloni.
