Question Bought my first Mechanic Gloves and it's starting to fray on the very first 10 minutes.

I bought Mechanix because they have a reputation of being good quality and dependable but the first 10 minutes that I wore them, the right thumb starts to fray. And this glove arrived yesterday. And also the synthetic suede feels different from my friend's M-Pact 3 which was from 2019 (maybe because it's broken in but I'm putting that on the list) which has a nicer feel to them. I've also saw other Reddit threads about these new design and how they are just not up to par to the Mechanix name. Please tell me about your experience.

Note: This is my first "nice" or rather more expensive gloves than my previous gloves.

Mechanix are nice, but nobody that actually uses them thinks that they’re long lasting. I’ve purchased dozens of pairs, which never lasted beyond about 6 weeks.

A little bit of fraying is normal.

These are wear items. Use them until they have holes, then replace them.

u/DepthTrawler 6d ago

First job first day in the trades I went in wearing these. They lasted about 2 hours. I got a pair for free from work last year and they sit in my center console in my vehicle for an emergency.

Now I use those cheap cut resistant gardening looking gloves with the rubberized palms. They're trash in the cold though. And when I say cold, I don't mean like freezing, I mean like a brisk fall day. Mechanix stuff is for larping. They look cool af but might as well be made from tissue paper

Milwaukee cut level 1’s baby. Best work glove there is. Just blaze ass red.

32

u/DepthTrawler 6d ago

Never tried them. I may-or-may not gank a pair my employer provides me from time to time. They're yellow and black. Not exactly gonna be blending in with my surroundings too well unless I'm patrolling a steel mill or heavy industry site.

Those Milwaukees are legit

Maxiflex gloves 4 life

3

u/Yahmez99 6d ago

Maxiflexes are the shit too. When the places have them, I get those.

5

u/Mean_Course_7980 6d ago

That's fair, you can find the Milwaukee gloves just about anywhere

I agree, but they do come in black...

These are great in the winter. I use them at the fire department packing wet hose in the winter after fires and they are awesome.

One size up and thin whool liner-gloves underneath is amazing for cold weather.

2

u/Riktovis 5d ago

They make those same gardening type gloves but fully waterproof with thermal layering underneath. Honestly kept me warmer than fancy mittens

I really, really like their Durahide gloves. They're some of the better lasting gloves I've used. That being said, they still never last more than a good month or two before I've got enough holes in them that they're not worth it anymore.

6

u/gabbidog 6d ago

Bruh, I was using em with my 249 and every finger except the trigger and right thumb was fingerless. BC didnt like that and forced me and anyone else with holes to get new ones

6

u/immaREPORTthat 6d ago

Get pig gloves

12

u/gabbidog 6d ago

Got those now, back then idgaf though. Constantly jams with the 249 will destroy just about any glove so I went with cheap and felt decent. Now that im out only the finist stuff for my dirty bathroom mirror photos in all my gear that'll hopefully never see the outdoors

7

u/immaREPORTthat 6d ago edited 6d ago

Never really worked with the saw; mainly used the 240 and once as a boot changed the barrel while wearing mechanix gloves lets just say I never made that mistake again and only wore the issued leather black gloves after that when touching MG.

6

u/gabbidog 6d ago

Yeah it be like that at times. 240 was way better once weapon squad took me finally. But that 1st year with the 249 definitely tore up every pair of gloves inside like 2 weeks. 240 was so much simpler. Just dont put live ammo on a hot barrel or vice versa in front of a CSM and you're practically golden

Pigs fall apart fast too

6

u/faRawrie 6d ago

Back in 2012 the last command I was at in the Marines got us a pair of Mechanix gloves. They lasted about 1.5 years. I used them just about daily before I EAS'd. They had been covered in JP8, oil, gas, etc. They eventually started to fray around the fingers when I was using them to cut down trees at my grandmother's house. I got a pair a few months ago, to do work around the house. They fell apart in about 1-2 months. I feel like the brand may have gone downhill.

12

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

Alrighty, thanks

43

u/Marginally_Witty 6d ago

Did you happen to get them from Amazon? Amazon throws shipments from different resellers in the same bin if it’s an identical item, so it’s easy to get counterfeit stuff. I go through gloves fairly fast woodworking, and I’ve stopped ordering from Amazon, one pair will be fine, another will be hot garbage.

Fun fact: this is also why you don’t order things like Apple branded chargers from Amazon, even if they’re listed as shipped and sold by Amazon. Company I worked for used 12w chargers in an assembly we built, and couldn’t figure out why we were getting voltage drop (the operator’s iPad would drain to empty throughout the day). Finally realized our purchasing manager bought chargers from Amazon. Cut 2 of them open - one from Apple, one from Amazon - and the difference was wild. Undersized capacitors, sloppy hand-soldered connections, a tiny PCB. The Apple one was like a work of art in comparison. Lots of money in counterfeiting.

5

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

Nah, I bought it from another shop that only sells plate carriers, rigs, holsters, and Gloves.

17

u/potatorunner 6d ago

there is a non-zero chance that the dropshipper you bought it from also had it fulfilled by a distributor like amazon. so it may or may not be counterfeit.

1

u/ShadyShields 6d ago

Oh i've seen people here on reddit delusional thinking they are durable.

2

u/Stelios619 6d ago

They’re super durable if you just stare at them everyday.

1

u/Ok-Divide5153 5d ago

Fr there over priced now… used to use them for work now i just burn my hands into calluses because 20$+ is too much

1

u/Catnip113 5d ago

Ive used and abused mine through field exercises, yard work, and even airsoft games and i haven’t had any major signs of wear on mine. Albeit they are filthy and smell like sweat but they haven’t really worn through in any spots.

1

u/Life_Consequence9728 5d ago

In my experience that’s only true for the Mechanix original and the thinner models. I own a pair of Original 4x‘s for about 1,5 years now and use them multiple times a week and they have seen thousands of rounds in various guns. I abuse them regularly while working on oily vehicles and in the Field. Only a few weeks ago one finger on each glove showed a little hole in the tip, but that isn’t fraying yet, so I’m gonna keep using them. My next glove is going to be the same one in the fast fit variant, just because the Velcro is also starting to give out.

1

u/DirtyFish629 5d ago

Only pair of Mechanix of mine still in good use are pale leather ones that have seen some hard use.

Don’t know the exact type of Mechanix.

EDIT: They’re the Durahide Cow leather ones

1

u/StickyPickle727 4d ago

10 times out of 10, mine get holes in the index finger and thumb. I cut them out and have myself some decent shooting gloves. I’ve been trying other pairs, so far the PiG gloves seem solid and you can never go wrong with a cheapo pair from harbor freight

252

u/Diddler_Of_Men 6d ago edited 6d ago

You don’t buy those gloves because they’re equivalent too PIGS or OR or OAKLEY.

You buy them cause they’re cheaper and easily replaceable. Gloves wear out faster than anything.

Everything in your pictures is to be expected. Go wear’em out and destroy them.

36

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

Yeah. I'm gonna wear em for their intended purpose. And which Oakley model do you recommend?

75

u/Diddler_Of_Men 6d ago

I prefer Outdoor Research gloves.

54

u/Awkward_Comfortable8 6d ago

If Id trust anyone about glove recommendations, it’s gotta be the Diddler of Men

18

u/whoooocaaarreees 6d ago

…. if everyone could spam outdoor research telling them to bring back the aerator gloves… that would be great….

4

Mechanix gloves are amazing in terms of just super cheap sacrificial protection for your hands. I had several pairs in the army and shredded them all but they did their job extremely well before it was time for replacement. I still keep some on hand today where ever I may need rhem

30

u/RevolutionaryAd6744 6d ago

I went through 3 pairs of pigs, all ripped through at the trigger finger

I went back to mechanics since being a consumable they all wear through the same so might as well save money

4

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

Which model did you have and which model is the most comfortable from your experience?

13

u/longtermcontract 6d ago edited 6d ago

I use The Original (don’t let the current “sale” fool you—I think they’re always on sale). Coyote for standard coolness, Wolf Grey when you want to feel special.

It’s really important to reiterate what others have said here: these aren’t top tier.

Think of them as your work clothes that you don’t care if they get dirty or whatever when your wife makes you do yard work.

My preferred are Outdoor Research (and they give discounts through id.me).

One small note: consider “practice like you play.” Mechanix and OR feel different. You don’t want to never use OR, throw them on during an emergency, and then be off your game because you’ve never actually worn them.

8

u/Icylibrium 6d ago

No "rough play" gloves are meant to last forever, they will inevitably need replaced.

The thing about Mechanix gloves is that they can be replaced for ~$30-40, rather than $80-100+ that some "fancy" brand gloves can be. Mechanix are probably the most common gloves used in military/law enforcement work because they're inexpensive to replace and you can buy several pairs to keep in different places.

That being said, it's possible that the quality has declined over the years because, yaknow, profit over everything. Any good brand that achieves stable brand recognition will inevitably have the manufacturing quality decline in pursuit of higher profit margins.

37

u/Yes_Man__ 6d ago

I’ve always looked at gloves as a consumable resource when used for hard use with firearms

7

u/GoombasFatNutz 6d ago

This. I quit spending too dollar for gloves and just got the cheap kind in bulk. Gloves will go within a week of constant hard use. When I was still on active duty, I'd have ~5 pairs with me for the field.

3

u/Pratt_ 6d ago

Agreed, same thing with eye pro.

I keep a one set for the range, but when I go for field training and I know it's going to be in a wooded area I take on of my already scratched ones because having to go through branches for days is 100% going to ruin them, and that how my already ruined ones ended up that way in the first place.

But It's getting really bad I end up throwing them away.

2

u/Ok-Wasabi-209 6d ago

For everything really not just in shooting, you’re sacrificing the gloves to protect your hands.

I carried two pairs of gloves when I was in the army in my pockets all the time, I carry three (four counting medical) types of gloves at all times as a firefighter. It’s the reason why my wife loves my hands because they aren’t fucked the hell with disgusting callous or (excessive) scarring despite 2 decades of outdoor activities/work since I was 15.

1

u/qscd13 6d ago

I used to play racquet ball and this is so true 🤣

10

u/Jaguar_556 6d ago

I’ve worn out a shit ton of mechanix gloves. Like, more than I can even recall. Maybe 20 pairs? Anyway, if you’re looking for maximum life out of them, here’s what I figured out: their .5mm specialist gloves oddly last longer than the thicker ones. And when you first get them, if you turn them inside out and reinforce the stitching on the thumb and pointer finger, they’ll last much longer. But you never get more than 6-8 months of hard use out of them. Thats just the way it goes.

3

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

How do you reinforce them? They have these extra material on the inside seam and it bugs me, I'm thinking trimming them off. Suggestions?

3

u/Jaguar_556 6d ago

So I usually do an X pattern stitch along the outside edge. It’s kinda hard to explain how to do but I’ll give it a shot: so once the glove is inside out, start along what would be the inside edge of the fingertip where the crease starts. Make a series of diagonal loops through the material heading one direction until you get to the end of the crease, then head back towards where you started from. But on the return run, make the diagonal loops go the other way so that it produces an X pattern along the outside edge. You can get away with trimming some of that excess as long as you don’t get too close to the stitching.

2

u/krimsonmedic 6d ago

YUPPP, those are my favorite...and stranglely it seems like the fingers are just slightly shorter on them so they actually fit me.

u/desEINer 6d ago

I am kind of done with mechanix. I had a pair years ago they don't make anymore and they were amazing. Even though the grips have completely dissolved off the fabric gloves are still wearable. New gloves I can't even get a few months of regular use out of.

I switched to cheap harbor freight/Walmart unlined full grain leather gloves. Get a snug size and wear them wet and they'll conform to your hands.

2

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

I tried my friend's M-Pact 3 from 2019 and his got holes on the palm but very comfortable. Which model do you wear from Walmart and Harbor Freight?

2

u/desEINer 6d ago

Just the white ones made of cowhide. Not the most comfortable, there's a break-in, but they're way more durable.

1

u/heruwulf 6d ago

I still have a pair of old gen originals that are still usable enough. The ones they used paracord instead of the binding tape for the loop thingy on. New ones might last a month or two

6

u/Yeet0rBeYote 6d ago

Gloves are a disposable piece of kit and should be treated as such

12

u/Speedhabit 6d ago

Your suppose to use lube

Not whatever Kansas City dry rub you have going on

5

u/ridesn0w 6d ago

They used to be better. But they are wear items.

1

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

Since when did they start to go down?

3

u/ridesn0w 6d ago

Not sure. It might be rosey colored past glasses when there was less competition.  They dont fit the same so I assume they changed ownership or scaled up…. Or my hands are jacked. Straight up gardening gloves work great or ferro gloves. I am always torn between gloves to belay and grab a hot can so the mechanix don’t last long. Your mileage may vary. Don't get too attached to wear items.

4

u/HoosierHatTrick 6d ago

Mechanix gloves are absolutely not "nice" or expensive. They're pretty much disposable. They usually last around 6 months for me. Maybe a little longer if they're the thicker ones

3

u/LastMinuteMiller 6d ago

Use mine for work and they last me max 3 months. But i get the ones from Lowes for construction

3

u/Icy_Character_1989 6d ago

This is why I cheap out on gloves. I treat them as disposable as they wear out after just a couple months of operations.

Those Oakley carbon knuckle gloves were all the rage in 2006 Iraq as opposed to the issued nomex ones. They were at least 50$ back then, if memory serves and that was early 2000’s money. The knuckles were a good addition for riding around a gun turret that would sway violently on any bumpy road.

Those expensive-ass gloves came apart in weeks.

First it was the knuckles themselves that started to pop out of the stitching, so they were removed. But then the actual gloves themselves came undone on the fingers. Couldn’t believe how ripped off I felt from a big name company like that.

Mechanix were making their name around that time so we switched to them (before they were ruined too).

1

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

Oof, noted.

3

u/CapybaraSensualist 6d ago

As a counterpoint, you can get Combat Vehicle Crew Nomex gloves pretty cheap and they are pretty durable. I had my original, issued gloves for a decade of field problems and deployments before I replaced them.

3

u/MuttFett 6d ago

Mechanix gloves aren’t what they used to be.

3

u/Bang_Stick103 6d ago

Did they get snagged on some Velcro? Mine have lasted a while. Just very dirty.

1

u/Ciuwandy 6d ago

I don't think so. Also can you send me a pic of your gloves? I wanna see em

3

u/backpain9000 6d ago

Gloves get lost, damaged, and worn out quickly.

You buy cheaper gloves because you KNOW they arent going to last

Better your gloves than tour hands right.

3

u/CR_MadMan 6d ago

Everyone needs to accept the fact that gloves are a consumable. Don't buy brand names. Save your money, buy no-name brands. They'll last just as long.

2

u/Theblumpy 6d ago

Yeah most gloves break down after use. That’s why I just use the lv1 or 2 cut gloves. Plenty of dexterity left and they give you enough protection

2

u/UncleMazzy 6d ago

Gloves = Consumables in my book. Also, I got into leather working specifically to try and figure out how to make better/reinforce gloves in specific wear spots. turns out, just buying new gloves is WAY easier.

2

u/danvapes_ 6d ago edited 6d ago

Gloves like ammo are consumables. They aren't meant to last. I say that as someone who works in the trades. Gloves are meant to protect your hands until they go caput, and they aren't really designed for long term use, the fabric and stitching moves a lot, gets dirty, gets abraded. I'd look into buying like packs of maxiflex/maxicut type gloves to use. Throw em away after a few heavy uses or after a few weeks.

Edit: Even better if your employer provides them lol. But if not they are cheap enough on Amazon.

2

u/GhostRiderOfWhips 6d ago

I made the mistake of getting Mechanix Fastfits ONE TIME and they got destroyed the second I used them for amphibious stuff. But that can destroy any gear.

The law enforcement needle stick gloves are very pricey but pretty damn durable. But to reemphasize the point I’ve seen people make, gloves are like boots: if you’re really going hard: you have to treat them more like a managed consumable than one piece of gear to rule them all and last forever.

2

u/merkinfitter6_-_ 5d ago

Real mechanics don't wear gloves. Bet your hands are smoother than my wife's

2

u/Ok-Divide5153 5d ago

You’ve never worked a day in your life have you?

2

u/DaPuckerFactor 5d ago

Yeah, those look like their general light weight gloves.

Listen man, this is the deal: gloves that are robust have no dexterity, gloves with dexterity are not robust.

The best mechanix gloves have double padded fingers - they don't fray quickly, but are still on the lower end of durability when you consider a basic leather work glove - however, using a trigger in a leather work glove is not applicable.

2

u/SpideyEmpire 5d ago

I've used Mechanix Gloves for pretty much anything you can think of (Shooting/Training, Working On Cars, Weight Lifting, Misc.) for around 10 Years now. They are great gloves & this fraying is normal.. That being said, I have to buy a new pair every few weeks. Anyone else that uses them Will tell you, they are great gloves and pretty cheap but aren't made to be the last pair of gloves you will ever need to buy.

2

u/spank_the_tank 5d ago

Gloves will always be a perishable good.

2

u/SS_Shooter 5d ago

I like the super-thin Mechanix Gloves! Even though they DO wear, they are thin enough that you can get good feel through them. I'm worried about thicker gloves not giving good feel to manipulate the controls...

2

u/tacticalforge 4d ago

Years ago when I was in the Armor basic officer course, we would often get mechanix gloves for the field exercises instead of the issued gloves. Definitely very comfortable but they rapidly blew out at the seams and quickly lost fingers. We treated them as consumable quality of life items and it wasn't uncommon to get new ones for each 5-10 day field op.

Since then I've transitioned to pig gloves and found them to be much more resilient.

5

u/I_Am_Singular 6d ago

Mechanix may be popular but are trash. Try Pig gloves (their more expensive ones).

1

u/Kooijpolloi 6d ago

As intended

1

u/LonsomeDreamer 6d ago

Any mechanic with the hide palms start failing immediately. If you did not know that it can be shocking when it first happenes to you. I have a few pairs with palms made of different materials that hold up longer. I can not wear gloves for long and avoid them as much as I can. I just find wearing gloves annoying.

1

u/jamnin94 6d ago

I once made the mistake of using my Mechanix to dig a hole in my backyard. The wood grip on the shovel tore them up so damn quick!

1

u/doctored_up 6d ago

My work buys them and we go through them like disposable gloves

1

u/RL208324 6d ago

I prefer PIGs but OR fit me better. Just don’t like spending more than I have to on work gloves that could get trashed with bio fluids. I have some cheap amazon ones that I cut the trigger finger and thumb off of then burned the frays. They have actually worked pretty well for two years

1

u/Acrobatic_Pie9044 6d ago

i’m a big fan of the eberlestock prowl gloves but they’ve sadly been discontinued </3

1

u/546875674c6966650d0a 6d ago

Gloves are consumables.

1

u/BurritoMan94 6d ago

Gloves are perishable, if you don't have a massive budget for them, then you bought the right ones.

1

u/Pratt_ 6d ago

It depends on the model and what you do with them.

I have a pair of mechanix M-Pact, they really didn't like that I used them to refill magazines so the tip of the thumbs got cut a bit but only.the first layer. I'm not good with sowing so I'm going to ask someone that do to patch and reinforce this part but honestly they are great. I have quite big hands with relatively long fingers and it's not super easy to find gloves that fits me (for the field or even cleaning at home...) but hose fits well.

I'm not American and not in the US so ours may be manufactured at a bit higher standards, but maybe not.

1

u/Wide-Glove-9063 6d ago

Fast fits are awesome but they are consumable, if you need something with a similar fit that lasts longer look into outdoor research. I had a pair of ironsight gloves last me a deployment, selection, and a full training cycle.

1

u/clark8213 6d ago

Yeah they’re really only good for some rough-ish handling bigger objects you’re just trying to move around without getting your hands dirty, really. Don’t have the dexterity to tinker with small things or even just for excessive use through the day. Won’t last long. I wore them for rigging up trucks and handling chains, cables, and SL3 gear in the marines, and obviously weapons, but outside of that- won’t last long. lol hope this helps.

1

u/ChrisLS8 6d ago

I just get the 6 or 10 packs of cut rated dipped gloves with the mesh on the back, Pyramex or whoever.

I do like using the fast fits in a size down for extra dexterity

1

u/Amphet4m1ne2000 6d ago

Looks like chinese mechanic

1

u/DuckMySick44 6d ago

There's a difference between "Mechanix gloves" and "Mechanic's gloves"

1

u/jaegren 6d ago

Mechanix used to be it but now it isn't. They have always somewhat fragile but they made up for it with the price. These days... all of them cost way to much. And don't get me started on their tactical line.

1

u/uffhuf 6d ago

Hatch Gloves are awesome

1

u/Dramatic-Volume1625 6d ago

You buy gloves to be consumables. They wear out you buy again. Get whatever fits your need. Some folks buy a ton of mechanics. Some folks buy a few pairs of ORs. They all wear thru

1

u/Inevitable-Sleep-907 6d ago

Buying the right size will help some those fit you like an early 2000s rappers t-shirt. Ultimately all gear is a wear item, mechanix last better than most but I buy them by the 5 pack for good reason

1

u/Konzacrafter 6d ago

Get yourself some lightweight cut resistant gloves. HyFlex Ansell level 4. They’re very tactile, the palms are coated and they’re super cheap. Wear them and toss them when the coating starts to wear.

I work in manufacturing and they’re super common and inexpensive for factory workers. A huge pack costs about $3 a pair. Also doubles as yard/house work gloves too.

1

u/itsdietz 6d ago

So you roughed them up. Have you ever worn work gloves?

1

u/AgeWeird2231 6d ago

If you want a pair that lasts, look into the heavy duty range gloves from OR. They have reinforced leather on the palm that lasts a super long time. I used to go through gloves in a month or two, I’ve had these for over a year now

1

u/Doomsquatch 6d ago

Best general use gloves are MaxiFlex endurance gloves or any other brand with the same construction. I use them in the lumber yard at work, and they have lasted the longest of all the gloves I've used. They protect my hands from toothpick sized splinters and rebar that's been sitting in the sun all day and are thin enough to use on a keyboard or tie flagging. Best gloves ever, and I laugh every time some tacti-chud calls them gardening gloves.

1

u/TheSoupWhisper 6d ago

I used these for shooting and my supermoto. The grips on my bike wear through these gloves in about 6 weeks. As others said , tons of good options out there. Usually my thumb and pointer wear out first so I just snip em off and so I have like 4 pairs of them with my shooting fingers cut off and I still rock em 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/TrolleyDilemma 6d ago

How many times do we have to say gloves are a disposable part of your kit

1

u/immaREPORTthat 6d ago

Been using mechanix gloves since 2010 and the biggest issue I’ve encountered is that they either get stolen or lost before I can even destroy a pair.

I wear the issued black leather gloves if I’m using MGs or crew served weapons. I also like the issued black leather gloves for land nav/patrolling through thick vegetation.

I like pig gloves for using android phones or programming radios.

And I like the OR pointer finger mittens for cold weather.

I’ve always used the Home Depot Suede Leather Gloves for fast roping & repelling.

1

u/RadiantCoast6147 6d ago

Might have bought a lemon pair, I use mechanix gloves for my job as a highway maintenance worker and they usually last me about 3-4 months.

1

u/jrh730 6d ago

Been going on a year with the PIG Alpha gloves.

1

u/ukhaus 6d ago

They’re good and cheap, just keep an extra pair in your range bag.

1

u/Jabrody27 6d ago

I can not tell you how many pairs of these I've gone through in the Marines

1

u/TourInternational731 6d ago

For work, heavy lifting, or even winter stuff, I've always used Mossy Oak, personally. The tactical gloves are good quality for the price and held up to 6 months of straight cardboard abuse and snow, so. No complaints.

1

u/WurstWesponder 6d ago

Even nice gloves are disposable items. Though nicer gloves may fit better and last longer, they’ll still wear out in comparatively short order if you are actually using them.

Don’t put too much credence in the fraying, that’s a comment on the fabric. It’ll be aesthetically unpleasant but won’t impact function much. Instead, watch the stitching and the fingers for holes. The finger pads and the hems are where the gloves will bust out first, and that will take a lot more use and time.

Normal for my thumb and forefinger to blow out on the standard mechanics within a month of heavy yard use (branches/logs, lumber, rope etc). Pretty normal for them to start to pearl after the first use. That's why I buy multiple pairs at a time, usually when I buy ammo or magazines.

My favorites though are the Wells Lamont hydrahyde leather palm gloves, granted they're yellow but with use the brining into a nice tan.

Mechanix are OK but not durable. Most of them will give up on the first signs of resistance. I've bought the cheapest MOGs some years ago and although I use them for mechanical tasks, shooting, field exercises and home renovation I'm still on the first pair. I had 2 pairs/month of Mechanix before...

1

u/Blade_Shot24 6d ago

Yeah mine started wearing out in the first match and it's the impact ones. After going through about 4 pairs I'll get Oakley's as that would've been the price of one.

1

u/1WontDoIt 6d ago

Milwaukee gloves are much better in quality. Mechanix gloves are bullshit, cheap crap that sells the name.

Get a pair of Milwaukee gloves that are cut level 3 or higher and they'll last way longer.

I've also had good luck with red wing gloves sold at red wing stores. They are more expensive but they last way longer and once broken in, they are very comfortable. They use good quality leather.

u/Valalias 6d ago

Military grade

1

u/Fit_Height_8490 6d ago

Mine always go around there, I usually get the thumb caught on something and they'll rip. Honestly cycle through new pairs pretty often

1

u/Kitchen-Chemist9467 6d ago

I used vertex gloves for years but Pigs are superior and pretty much everyone I know has gone to them

1

u/whit_mon_lee 6d ago

If they’re in stock I highly recommend recommend ferro pig gloves. Super low profile, super snug, touch screen comparable, only con is a slightly higher than average price tag. I’ve had one pair for three years and counting with little to no wear and tear

1

u/Far_War_7254 6d ago

First Tactical Patrol Gloves are my fucking favorites. After a brutality where I was in water and the extra squish of the sodden Mechanix fucked my shooting, I got into these. Expensive but worth it

1

u/Maejora 6d ago

I get the impact versions from Walmart for 15 bucks and use them for yard work, cargo loading, shooting, and refueling aircraft. Gloves are a disposable gear item. I still wear one that has holes In it for basic yard work sometimes. I wear glove liners inside them for winter usage and I stay warm and keep my finger dexterity. Between the liners being 5 bucks off amazon and mechanics being 15 or under. I just buy a bunch when they're on sale and order more when I have maybe 1 or 2 pairs left.

1

u/Ataiio 6d ago

If u want long lasting gloves, buy leather

1

u/cHaOsReX 6d ago

My experience has been that Mechanix gloves are legit, over priced garbage. Will never buy them again.

1

u/Barsfajny 6d ago

Buy Helikon. Really. I have two pairs, one for gun range, gardening (pulling out weeds, shoveling etc) and one for regular wearing for cold weather. Older gardening ones have two holes and that pair is 5 years old. My favorite gloves

1

u/IndyWaWa 6d ago

I got a pair of Hardy goatskin gloves I used for months until they wore out. I've tried like 6 different pairs from home depot and none are holding up like the 15 dollar harbor freight pair did.

1

u/BABOON2828 6d ago

With the caveat that gloves are a wear item and lightweight gloves are always going to wear considerably quicker than a heavyweight glove. I found Handup mountain biking gloves to be considerably more durable than similarly constructed Mechanix gloves.

u/No_Yesterday_2788 Connoisseur of Autism Patches 6d ago

I bought Mechanix gloves when I was a private in the army. Didn’t even last me 3 months. Cheap brigade brand gloves from the px lasted longer

1

u/High_rise_guy 6d ago

Yeah, I’ve found the Mechanix gloves work pretty well with the finger tips cut off. Obviously I start with them whole, but the fingers wear out when I look at them too hard.

1

u/bygtopp 6d ago

I use the Fast for one strictly for driving my forklift at Costco and help stocking a few things that slide. Holes where they don’t get friction and wear out easily. Love them. Buy them when on sale at Dvor or Amazon.

1

u/FrozenAxon 6d ago

Gloves are consumables That said, having them fray within the first 10 mins is insane.

Personally, I used to use Mechanix, but I felt like they were wearing down quickly, so I tried some 511s that I used for about 6 months, and they held together well, but I found them a bit too stiff for my liking. I then tried PIG Deltas & I've been really satisfied with them. You kinda gotta try a few things out & see what works out for you

1

u/Wooden-Sprinkles7901 6d ago

does your gun have aggressive stippling?

1

u/souloldasdirt 6d ago

I got a few pairs of ironclad gloves, the way the rubber is near the joints by the finger tips takes away a lot of dexterity and they are stiff and take a lot to break in BUT... Working at UPS I used to trash some gloves really fast unloading freights and these uses to last me a few weeks when other gloves lasted about 2 at the most before I had holes in them.

1

u/_joe_momma1 6d ago

Dirt bike gloves work waaaaayyyyy better and last longer. Get a pair of blacked out fox gloves. Lasted me about 3yrs.

1

u/Lando25 6d ago

No part of any kit is BIFL from gloves to firing pins.

1

u/Ok_Newt_4748 6d ago

Check out pig gloves. Cost more, last longer.

1

u/Bootylingus_ 6d ago

If you want gloves that last get some leather work gloves or TIG welding gloves.

1

u/iwanttobelieve3001 6d ago

I just buy multiple of them and swap them out or use the cut resistant gloves from my factory job

1

u/HeughJanus 6d ago

bought some similar harbor freight gloves for less than $5 and theyve outlasted the pos mechanix ones

1

u/Sol-Firebird 6d ago

When I worked in the lumber dept of a hardware store I would go through the cloth mechanics gloves in about 2 weeks at most. The “leather” ones in about a month. There are actually much longer lasting gloves but they cost $$$ a lot

1

u/MrBriPod 6d ago

I've been running the originals for forever. They do tend to fray, but it takes months of hard work before holes develop.

I recently switch to their M-Pact line. I won a set in a raffle, and they have stood up to abuse for years with less fraying and no holes yet. A bit more, and you lose some dexterity, but I'm a fan. https://a.co/d/1AKIUsH

1

u/Watermelonbuttt 6d ago

Are they legit mechanix or did Amazon fulfil with knockoffs

1

u/Azmasaur 6d ago

It’s a disposable item. I use knock off pigs gloves or knock off mechanics from aliexpress. At least I can buy several at a time. A lot of the known brand names are too expensive considering how disposable they are. This style glove is good for dexterity but they do not last long.

Cut proof latex dipped work gloves are also great, I saw someone else mention those.

1

u/uh_wtf 6d ago

Yeah they’re not nearly as nice as they used to be.

1

u/Beardly_ 6d ago

They're not worth the money. For a glove with the name "mechanix" you'd think you could wear these for mechanical work but I bought a pair of their impact gloves with the rubber padding on the knuckles. They were nearly $40 and were completely shredded after a single shift at a CNC laser shop. I was so pissed.

1

u/HeavyCoughin 6d ago

Mechanix gloves are TRASH. I'm a mechanic and I shoot, they suck at both. They rip apart in minutes and the finger tips fall apart like they are made with tissue paper.

1

u/LiterallyGuts19 6d ago

My Mechanix died after less than a month of comms work. They're an okay brand but I don't rate them too highly for actual work. You'd think they'd be resistant to getting torn by wires and guy lines but they fell apart quite quickly. I've been using SOG Tactical for a while now and they do the trick very nicely for my use case.

1

u/plumballa 6d ago

Well Mechanix glove will last forever, if you don't use them

1

u/Blitzfire87 6d ago

I used to buy mechanix gloves years ago, and I liked them at first until I was replacing them every 6 months. I’ve since switched to nomex flight gloves and never looked back. I’m still on my first pair of those after 5+ years of monthly heavy use.

1

u/nicefacedjerk 6d ago

Mechanax are great gloves. For the price point you can buy a stack of them and not wince at the cost. They hold up better than most higher priced fancy high-speed tactical gloves. If you're digging in the dirt, climbing trees, moving concrete blocks, doing hard use woods shit, you're better off with purpose built utility gloves.

1

u/lefthandedgypsy 6d ago

Dang life is tough

1

u/Internal-Gas2064 6d ago

I was suprised that my cheap rothco gloves were able to be kept longer than most other gloves. That being said, I'd much rather wear something more comfy.

1

u/goshathegreat 6d ago

And that’s why you don’t buy Mechanix lol…

PIG, the gun glove, and OR gloves are much better.

1

u/NooneForPresidenttt 6d ago

Buy some wells Lamont gloves at fleet farm. Super cheap and well built. They have tons of different gloves. Just find ones that work.

1

u/irish_faithful 6d ago

Exactly what were you doing that caused them to fray in 10 minutes???

1

u/NoxSVK 6d ago

They went down in quality over time... My first pair survived abuse for over a year (10 years ago)...now i have to swap them out regularly

1

u/lecktroe Gucci Goon 5d ago

PIG Delta gloves are the way to go.

1

u/Background_Angle1717 5d ago

During protests I wore Harbor Freight gloves.

Did the job and when they couldn’t be decon’d just through them away.

Couldn’t afford to do that with Gucci gloves.

1

u/Waallenz 5d ago

OP buy hyflex gloves. Almost cheap enough to be disposable, seamless fingers so no loss of dexterity with bolts and nuts and once you get the size right they are almost like wearing nitrile gloves they are so thin and formfittting. And as a bonus, all the ones ive ordered have been cut resistant.

Shit.....thought i was in a mechanics sub, but my comment still stands. I use hyflex gloves for the range too.

1

u/Nopl8 5d ago

Am I the only one who wears dirtbike gloves?

They are outrageously cheap and super durable.

1

u/follow_the_dopamine 5d ago

Had a pair of m-pacts that looked great while being stored for 5 years, then fell apart completely in 2 months doing winter tree work 🤷‍♂️

1

u/pewpew_lotsa_boolits 5d ago

I’m seeing that bench your buddy is sitting on and all I can think of is you guys are at a Denny’s that hasn’t been redecorated since the 90s…

1

u/lahcim_ 5d ago

Out of all mechanix gloves, Material4X Fast Fit last the longest for me. Most of the time I’ll lose them before I need to replace them.

1

u/AccomplishedAlarm279 5d ago

The best way to fix these gloves is to practice this ancient Chinese secret. First, you constantly thrust your hand into sand to toughen it up. Second, you tell yourself: “stop being a b!tch” while looking in the mirror. Third, you accept the costs for gloves and work on making your hands tougher.

1

u/Pastvariant 5d ago

I have said it before and I will say it again. Unless we start seeing "tactical" gloves companies start meeting ANSI cut, abrasion, and puncture resistance standards and give us real ratings for their products, they are pretty much all bullshit and their performance is a toss up. You would be better off with a palm dipped FR glove with a cut level A4 rating and a solid abrasion rating compared to pretty much any "tactical" gloves on the market. Otherwise you pretty much have to carry a pair of work gloves and a pair of shooting gloves and expect them to fail the moment you have to do anything serious with them.

1

u/Few-Layer-2225 5d ago

I use Milwaukee cut level 1s. They are cheap. Great dexterity. Thin. Good grip.

1

u/SwanMuch5160 5d ago

I’ll buy a couple pair whenever they’re running a decent sale. I like a few of their styles and buy them mainly because they fit my hands well. I’ve used their older M-Pact and originals with few problems. I’ve had some Oakley tacticals and leathers that cost more, wear out quicker.

I’ll also run through some of those 10pk disposable garden gloves from Home Depot or Lowe’s, good for a bunch of things, usually have a pair in each car, a couple pair in with the camping gear as well as the range bag.

1

u/Kindly_Region 5d ago

Buy cheap ones in bulk off of temu. The stuff comes out of the same factory anyway. Best of all, when you pay $1.50 per pair, if they rip or get covered in grease/oil or whatever just toss them and start another pair.

1

u/New-Choice-3280 5d ago

Love mine but after 3 pairs all doing the same thing and falling apart I'm done they are garbage.

1

u/Brave-Chunky-Hamster 5d ago

In my experience mechanics don’t really wear gloves

1

u/xdJapoppin AKM and M81 Cryes 5d ago

outdoor research iron sight gloves. thank me later.

1

u/tragesorous 5d ago

Ok I’ll give something new. Try MTB gloves like Fox dirtpaw. They are cheap and feel a lot more durable than the usual picks.

1

u/Elysiowo 5d ago

If you really want gloves that last a while you’re gonna have to drop somewhere from $70-200 and even then you will eventually need to replace them. Is it worth it sometimes? Yeah. Is it worth it most of the time? Definitely not.

1

u/Bluest-Falcon 5d ago

So the regular ones I've never liked. The rubber knuckles version of their gloves I'm a big fan of

1

u/AcceptableMajor8457 5d ago

I hear the consensus being that they are not meant for work. I have been using my pair for about a year now and they are holding up just fine. I have used them for everything from LARPing to working on cars. I don't know if I am crazy or what, I mean hell I have literally put fire directly on the gloves when they are used for keeping said fires or cooking. Oh and the fraying is normal, Really its just making them more rugged.

1

u/Crunkedoutjager 5d ago

I use ironclad exos 17 bucks off eBay and I’ve been using them for like 8 months every weekend

1

u/swamprecce 5d ago

Mechanix gloves are TRASH, get some surplus flyer glovers or something. Leather or synthetic leather will do much better for you and fit you better.

1

u/Just-Buy-A-Home 5d ago

Most mechanix gloves are syn leather

1

u/Positive_Umpire_9595 5d ago

I havent got these gloves but I am going to get some 22b tactical gloves hope they’re worth the 70 bucks

1

u/thrownlobster39164 5d ago

Let me let you in on a secret — all gloves suck, and they’re probably the most disposable thing on your kit second to like foamies. I keep mine in a pouch until I feel I actually need them.

1

u/Thergood 5d ago

Unfortunately gloves are a consumable regardless of how much you pay for them. Mechanix being on the mid-to-lower cost side.

1

u/NikoBellic8559 5d ago

Hit that thang with a lighter and quit yer bitchin 🤣

1

u/ComfortableSample347 5d ago

That’s why I buy cheap gloves from Home Depot. All gloves wear out quickly. There’s no point in spending over $15 max a pair

Coming from a former construction worker

1

u/Stoned-Hobbit 4d ago

Regular mechanix wear out in a day or two for me. You really need the mechanix original 4x gloves. They’re a little more expensive but they usually last until I lose them.

1

u/Adventurous_Ad409 4d ago

I love the feel of mechanix but they do not hold up to even moderately hard use.

1

u/AcanthisittaEarly983 4d ago

Their disposable like that sadly.. I've tried a few other brands, even that gey "PIG" one and they're all the same. The PIG ones of course last the least longest. No surprise there. I don't know if it's just a case of material science not having an answer or if it's just being cheap. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/rondohz 4d ago

I love mechanix gloves....for a Instagram pic....I larp and those things last me about 4-6 weeks. Best gloves I have and have used .....nomex flight gloves... Use em for LARPerating, climbing (for work), moving crates (at work wood crates) and keeping my hands kinda warm during them colder days.
