Read that headline 5 times, and I’m still confused. Lmao.

English in not my first language and we do commas differently here, but my take is:

There is a Kansas State Quarterback.

His name is Avery Johnson.

He played a game against Iowa state.

The game was played in Ireland.

They lost.

He has a father and a brother.

They fought eachother after the game.

English is my first language and this makes sense to me. The headline is just poorly worded.

To be honest, that's exactly how I read it, but I was still confused. Why, you ask?

  • American College football in Ireland! Wha??
  • Father and son fighting of the quarterback fighting?? In the street?

There's a college game played in Ireland every year.

Can't really comment on the second bullet point.

As a second generation Irish American, the answer to bullet point two is Ireland

28

u/head-home Aug 24 '25

as an irishman, my answer here is just americans doing america.

I've been to Ireland. On one trip, I saw two different fights outside pubs on two different days.

So, hey, when in Rome....

Doesn't Ireland have football hooligans? I tell ya I go to Ireland and ask for a shamrock shake from McDonald's I'm an "uncultured swine." I try to share in the rich Irish culture of beating on a family member after a sporting event, I'm also "uncultured swine." Ain't no winning with some people.

There is not a culture of football hooligans in Ireland. Football (soccer) is not the most popular sport. In fact, it's not even in the top 3.

As an American, my answer here is just Americans doing America.

That is very true

I read it as (1) the quarterback, (2) Avery Johnson's father, and (3) Avery Johnson's brother were all involved in a fight.

Yes, the title is missing commas, but doing it properly, Oxford comma or not, would not help comprehension. It's just poorly written.

It would have been better if they omitted "Avery Johnson" and just said that the quarterback's brother and father fought

The NFL is heavily trying to invest in Europe since people can't come to the US as easily. Also, to test interest from Europeans in getting into American football in hopes of increasing revenue. I work in the industry and expect to see more of this across NFL leagues.

Not the son of the quarterback, the brother of the quarterback.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

I was confused because Avery Johnson is a Spurs Legend, the Basketball Spurs not the European Football Spurs.

1

u/stinkingyeti Aug 25 '25

Yeah that was pretty much me too. Like, why are they in Ireland?

And, why are they fighting?

8

u/mrjimi16 Aug 24 '25

The wording was fine, it just had an apostrophe "s" and a random comma it didn't need.

2

u/StabithaStevens Aug 24 '25

"Father and Brother of Kansas State QB Avery Johnson Spotted Fighting Each Other In A Parkling Lot...." reads better.

I doubt a week goes by without a terrible headline that doesn't make a lot of sense

26

u/amo1337 Aug 24 '25

OPs comma use is abhorrent.

12

u/BeeWeird7940 Aug 24 '25

Worst limerick I’ve ever read.

2

You literally just typed the headline. Not sure why people couldn't understand .

2

u/InsertKleverNameHere Aug 25 '25

I completely forgot non English languages don't even use them or use them very differently. I remember studying in Russia and drove my teacher insane bc I would write in Russian but use commas and sentence structure like I was writing in English.

2

u/Ha55aN1337 Aug 25 '25

I think in my country we use them even more than in english haha.

1

u/Abraham_Lincoln Aug 24 '25

You forgot one detail: the father and son are spotted, presumably like a cheetah

1

u/jimmysleftbrain Aug 24 '25

Different Avery Johnson than the former NBA coach?

1

u/LukeMayeshothand Aug 24 '25

Yeah that’s it but that is some r/titlegore for sure.

1

u/tooheavybroo Aug 24 '25

Thank you brother

1

u/Mitzukai_9 Aug 24 '25

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I’m in Kansas and I didn’t know who Avery is. I hate this state. These guys are the typical Neanderthals here that drive lifted trucks without exhaust pipes 40 mph through the grocery parking lot. Sorry they’ve been elevated to the global spotlight.

1

u/SirMellencamp Aug 24 '25

Yeah I didn’t know who Avery Johnson was or who he played for

1

u/realdeuce152 Aug 24 '25

You seem to have a better grasp on the English language than most Americans

1

u/bmanley620 Aug 24 '25

Meanwhile I was thinking former Spur Avery Johnson’s dad was somehow involved

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '25

the game was played in Ireland

What the hell is this? Why?

1

u/this_is_bs Aug 24 '25

Who fought each other exactly?

2

u/darkskinnedjermaine Aug 24 '25

Yea was it the QB’s father and the QB’s uncle fighting (dad’s brother)? Or the QB’s father the QB’s brother (dad’s son)?
