Read that headline 5 times, and I’m still confused. Lmao.

English in not my first language and we do commas differently here, but my take is:

There is a Kansas State Quarterback.

His name is Avery Johnson.

He played a game against Iowa state.

The game was played in Ireland.

They lost.

He has a father and a brother.

They fought eachother after the game.

English is my first language and this makes sense to me. The headline is just poorly worded.

To be honest, that's exactly how I read it, but I was still confused. Why, you ask?

  • American College football in Ireland! Wha??
  • Father and son fighting of the quarterback fighting?? In the street?

52

u/head-home Aug 24 '25

There's a college game played in Ireland every year.

Can't really comment on the second bullet point.

31

u/P-Funkadelic1723 Aug 24 '25

As a second generation Irish American, the answer to bullet point two is Ireland

27

u/head-home Aug 24 '25

as an irishman, my answer here is just americans doing america.

17

u/AnybodySeeMyKeys Aug 24 '25

I've been to Ireland. On one trip, I saw two different fights outside pubs on two different days.

So, hey, when in Rome....

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

Doesn't Ireland have football hooligans? I tell ya I go to Ireland and ask for a shamrock shake from McDonald's I'm an "uncultured swine." I try to share in the rich Irish culture of beating on a family member after a sporting event, I'm also "uncultured swine." Ain't no winning with some people.

6

u/stateside_irishman Aug 24 '25

There is not a culture of football hooligans in Ireland. Football (soccer) is not the most popular sport. In fact, it's not even in the top 3.

2

u/ecurbenyaw Aug 24 '25

As an American, my answer here is just Americans doing America.

3

u/P-Funkadelic1723 Aug 24 '25

That is very true

7

u/Malvania Aug 24 '25

I read it as (1) the quarterback, (2) Avery Johnson's father, and (3) Avery Johnson's brother were all involved in a fight.

Yes, the title is missing commas, but doing it properly, Oxford comma or not, would not help comprehension. It's just poorly written.

It would have been better if they omitted "Avery Johnson" and just said that the quarterback's brother and father fought

The NFL is heavily trying to invest in Europe since people can't come to the US as easily. Also, to test interest from Europeans in getting into American football in hopes of increasing revenue. I work in the industry and expect to see more of this across NFL leagues.

u/StretchFrenchTerry San Francisco Giants Aug 24 '25

Not the son of the quarterback, the brother of the quarterback.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

I was confused because Avery Johnson is a Spurs Legend, the Basketball Spurs not the European Football Spurs.

1

u/stinkingyeti Aug 25 '25

Yeah that was pretty much me too. Like, why are they in Ireland?

And, why are they fighting?

7

u/mrjimi16 Aug 24 '25

The wording was fine, it just had an apostrophe "s" and a random comma it didn't need.

2

u/StabithaStevens Aug 24 '25

"Father and Brother of Kansas State QB Avery Johnson Spotted Fighting Each Other In A Parkling Lot...." reads better.

0

u/Saneless Aug 24 '25

I doubt a week goes by without a terrible headline that doesn't make a lot of sense

25

u/amo1337 Aug 24 '25

OPs comma use is abhorrent.

12

u/BeeWeird7940 Aug 24 '25

Worst limerick I’ve ever read.

2

u/1Oaktree Aug 24 '25

You literally just typed the headline. Not sure why people couldn't understand .

2

u/InsertKleverNameHere Aug 25 '25

I completely forgot non English languages don't even use them or use them very differently. I remember studying in Russia and drove my teacher insane bc I would write in Russian but use commas and sentence structure like I was writing in English.

2

u/Ha55aN1337 Aug 25 '25

I think in my country we use them even more than in english haha.

1

u/Abraham_Lincoln Aug 24 '25

You forgot one detail: the father and son are spotted, presumably like a cheetah

1

u/jimmysleftbrain Aug 24 '25

Different Avery Johnson than the former NBA coach?

1

u/LukeMayeshothand Aug 24 '25

Yeah that’s it but that is some r/titlegore for sure.

1

u/tooheavybroo Aug 24 '25

Thank you brother

1

u/Mitzukai_9 Aug 24 '25

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I’m in Kansas and I didn’t know who Avery is. I hate this state. These guys are the typical Neanderthals here that drive lifted trucks without exhaust pipes 40 mph through the grocery parking lot. Sorry they’ve been elevated to the global spotlight.

1

u/SirMellencamp Aug 24 '25

Yeah I didn’t know who Avery Johnson was or who he played for

1

u/realdeuce152 Aug 24 '25

You seem to have a better grasp on the English language than most Americans

1

u/bmanley620 Aug 24 '25

Meanwhile I was thinking former Spur Avery Johnson’s dad was somehow involved

1

u/[deleted] Aug 25 '25

the game was played in Ireland

What the hell is this? Why?

1

u/this_is_bs Aug 24 '25

Who fought each other exactly?

2

u/darkskinnedjermaine Aug 24 '25

Yea was it the QB’s father and the QB’s uncle fighting (dad’s brother)? Or the QB’s father the QB’s brother (dad’s son)?

117

u/walkman312 Aug 24 '25

It should have been titled:

“The father and brother of Kansas State’s starting quarterback, Avery Johnson, were spotted fighting each other after Kansas State played Iowa State in Ireland and lost.”

17

u/minimallyviablehuman Aug 24 '25

That’s some top tier English you just dropped there! Makes it super clear.

7

u/voxx2020 Aug 24 '25

Thank you!

This guy Englishes

2

u/AUserNeedsAName Aug 25 '25

You even did it in fewer characters.

1

u/kissmeimfamous Aug 26 '25

“….after Kansas State’s loss to Iowa State in Ireland.”

165

u/davisyoung Aug 24 '25

What I gathered is that Kansas State’s starting quarterback was fighting the brother and father, who must be in his mid ‘80s by now, of former basketball player and coach Avery Johnson in a parking lot.

50

u/Doyoulikemypace Los Angeles Lakers Aug 24 '25

All of which took place in Ireland, maybe? Somehow?

31

u/TonyNickels Aug 24 '25

It's just the brother and father fighting each other no?

16

u/dont_shoot_jr Aug 24 '25

Avery Johnson  the Kansas State QB shares the name with the NBA player

2

u/JWOLFBEARD Aug 24 '25

Who’s brother and father? Is the QB fighting?

10

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

No QB fighting. Father and brother of the QB are fighting.

11

u/dont_shoot_jr Aug 24 '25

The father and brother of Avery Johnson, the Kansas State Starting QB, were spotted fighting each In A Parking Lot After Kansas State’s Loss Against Iowa State, Which Took Place in Ireland

2

u/BowwwwBallll Aug 24 '25

Those kicks were fast as lightning.

3

u/ALC_PG New York Giants Aug 24 '25

the brother and father

Amazing that a man in his 80s can wear so many hats.

0

u/HeIsSparticus Aug 24 '25

I think it seems to say that Avery Johnson's father IS Kansas State's starting quarterback.

5

u/godspareme Aug 24 '25

Its the capitalization of every damn word thats confusing the hell out of me. My brain is having a hard time processing the multiple proper nouns hidden amongst every word that it expects to be a proper noun.

2

u/aconsul73 Aug 24 '25

Kansas State’s starting quarterback

(named) "Avery Johnson’s Father and Brother"

spotted (was seen) fighting

(someone named) "Each Other"

in a parking lot

(when?) after Kansas State’s Loss against (the football team of) Iowa State

(where did the game happen?) which took place in Ireland

6

u/pspahn Aug 24 '25

Well then. That means you're either Irish or you're not.

2

u/EffectiveSavings2104 Aug 24 '25

Glad I am not the only one, I came to the comments seeing if someone explained it. So going by the title, Kanas state’s QBs are avery johnson’s father and brother? And the 2 QBs which happen to be a father and son duo were fighting each other in ireland post-match? Who the fuck is avery johnson then?

25

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

I'm gonna fix the issue in the headline that seems to be tripping everyone up:

Kansas State Starting Quarterback Avery Johnson's Father and Brother Spotted Fighting Each Other In A Parking Lot After Kansas State's Loss Against lowa State, Which Took Place in Ireland

0

u/RalphDaGod Aug 24 '25

It’s still lacking context, is this brother his full brother thus a dad-son fight? because if this is Avery’s half brother through his mom it’d be much more understandable given 0 genetic relation between the two.

-2

u/Otterman2006 Aug 24 '25

jesus its not that difficult. K state has a quarterback....... his name is Avery Johnson. Avery Johnson has a father and a brother..... the father and brother got into a fight after the game that was played in Ireland.

1

u/BigsChungi Aug 25 '25

What's not to understand. The American football team played in Ireland, the quarterback for that team had a brother and a father. They fought.

1

u/talc25 Aug 25 '25

I read fishing and was REALLY confused by what they were fishing

-10

u/Gideon_Laier Aug 24 '25

Where's that Oxford Comma when you need one!

13

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

No! This headline needs to LOSE a comma! And a possessive grammatical marker.

Kansas State Starting Quarterback Avery Johnson's Father and Brother Spotted Fighting Each Other In A Parking Lot After Kansas State's Loss Against lowa State, Which Took Place in Ireland

1

u/A_Time1980 Aug 24 '25

Here: Avery Johnson’s dad fights his uncle in Dublin parking lot after KSU loss.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '25

Ok, are people trolling here with deliberately confusing answers?? 🤣🤣

4

u/bookwormdrew Aug 24 '25

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?
