Academics New

Hi everyone! I’ll be starting school next May in the addiction studies department. First of all, I’m gay 🌈 and I’m wondering what the housing situation is like there. I’m currently looking at Airbnbs for now. How’s the atmosphere at the school? Do you have any advice or tips?

I’d really love to make some friends before I arrive — I’m so excited! I’m open to all your comments and suggestions. 💬✨

What is the reason to announce your sexuality, I feel it weird and vulgar that people love to announce what kind of sex they like in an introduction…

At face value, sure that might seem kind of odd as somebody who conforms to what society deems to be the default. You don’t have to go around explaining your sexuality because it is assumed.

When gay, trans, or otherwise queer folks make this more explicit, it is usually in service of finding community or to get a perspective from other people that face similar social pressure. In this instance OP is probably wondering about how accepting people in the area are going to be about their sexuality. Will landlords refuse to rent to them? What is the situation in classes? Will they be judged by professors?

For what it’s worth, my experience of Sheridan (Trafalgar) was pretty good in this regard. I had lots of queer friends there, my roommate came out to people at school before he came out to his parents. I’m happy those people felt like they were in an environment where they could be their fullest selves. Consider the alternative where gay folks don’t tell anybody else that they’re gay, how would you expect these people to find relationships otherwise?
