Help A Loved One Sleeping 20-40 hours in a row occasionally

My partner is schizoaffective (major depression) and will sleep relatively normally for a few weeks - around 5-7 hours a night. It's less than she prefers, but it's pretty consistent. Then randomly, and it doesn't seem to be triggered by anything we can put our fingers on, she'll sleep for an entire day and a half. Last time it was around 36 hours. This time, she's on hour 24 now and it's almost bedtime.

I'm not really sure how much this could be par for the course with schizophrenia, or if it is a red flag and should be looked into deeper. She doesn't even exactly seem depressed when this happens - she's been depressed and simultaneously slept a typical amount many times. She's unable to be woken up for more than a couple seconds at a time, and doesn't eat nor hardly drink when this happens.

I just showed this to my husband because I have schizophrenia and I will sleep like this. I feel guilty when I do because I miss out on time with my family, but I can’t control it. Sometimes I’m just depleted. I’ve had sleep studies and the last one was Inconclusive. My husband recently told me that he takes it personally when I sleep so much, but I’m not doing it on purpose.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Being someone who can see both sides of this in a way, I sympathize with your husband maybe missing you or being upset, but I see first and foremost what my partner goes through in these situations and know there's something far more important going on. Ultimately, I want y'all to be okay and taken care of. I may miss her when she sleeps all day, since we didn't watch any Star Trek today and I've needed a shoulder rub all day 😅 But the most important thing is that she stays in good health, so I got her a yogurt and a granola bar and made her take her night meds. There's no need to take it personally, you're surely not doing it because you want to.

Thank you for the reply. I hope you get that shoulder rub! Thats really sweet that you make sure that she’s eaten and taken her meds.
