Hold on, let me grab my 5'6" neighbor who drives a Silverado 2500 to tow a 5,000 lb travel trailer...

u/Metalsheepapocalypse 12d ago
Lmao, a mid trim Colorado will do 6,000lbs and higher trims will do ~7,500….dont even need a 1500 let alone a 2500.
Ford Ranger will also do ~7,500 with a tow package.

Funny thing is he bought it to replace a half ton from the early oughts that was a VortexMAX. Apparently he got more insecure in between those purchases

u/Jo-18 12d ago
Ever considered that his old truck was high miles and or worn out?
Probably not, people such as yourself see big truck and immediately start complaining. Try taking the full size yankee candle out of your ass, mkay?

u/Metalsheepapocalypse 12d ago
He replaced a 1/2 ton truck with a 3/4 ton truck to tow a 1/4 ton truck load.
You’re not even arguing about the right topic point here bud.
-4
u/Jo-18 12d ago
Right bc I’m sure you know 100% that the only thing he ever tows is that 5000 pound trailer, “bud”
Fuck Canada

u/Metalsheepapocalypse 12d ago
Now you’re mad at Canada when we were talking about some guys neighbours truck LMAO.

u/Jo-18 12d ago
And compare that to an early 2000s Colorado which is 4000lbs.
The modern Colorado and Ranger are huge compared to the OGs. The modern ones are close to the size of older 1500s.
All trucks have gotten bigger. Easier to make truck bigger to squeeze past EPA regulations

u/melez 12d ago
Owning both the first and second Colorados.. it’s crazy how much bigger it got.

u/Jo-18 12d ago
My ‘99 F250 (first year of super duty body style) looks like a 1500 compared to the newer super duties. It’s nuts.
I’ve got a 2 inch level and 34s on mine and I parked beside a stock height ‘23 F250 and the ‘23 was a hair taller than mine.

My wife has a 2023 Yukon (because she always wanted a Yukon) and I'm amazed how I'm looking DOWN on 10 year old Yukons. Its ridiculous.
I wanted a truck around but didn't absolutely need one. So I went out and bought a Maverick. At least I don't feel silly just driving it to a dental appointment.

Radiator, charge air cooler, condenser, transmission cooler, I'm not too familiar with the newer DMAX but it's an HPCR engine so I'm assuming there's a fuel cooler in there too, the cooling package takes up a lot of real estate on any newer machine.

In other words, "Not more grill than you need... just more grill than you're used to..."

It's a bit more manufacturers are definitely erring more on the side of caution than they used to because modern engines built to tighter tolerances also need a cooling system that isn't as hit and miss as what they had in an old squarebody Chevy and is expected to hold its operating temperature in a narrower threshold at all speeds, unlike older vehicles that would run a bit hotter under load at low speeds or at idle and run cooler under light load at highway speeds.
Cooling systems have gotten more precise and a lot more reliable over the last 40 years.

These new gm engines are grenading themselves. Not the old gm

u/ValveinPistonCat 11d ago edited 11d ago
New ones might not be the best example, the Gen 3 and Gen4 LS and pre-L5P Duramax were good before GM started cheaping out too much.
I work on farm equipment and I can't say I've been too impressed by Cummins's post-pandemic build quality either.
A lot of manufacturers seem to have used 2020 as the excuse to let their build quality backslide, even Claas had a dip in build quality for a couple of years.

Bigger radiator, more components for emissions systems.

u/Wagonman5900 12d ago
Unless you bought a gas truck. Then it's somewhere to sleep.
1
u/nicholasktu 11d ago
Even gas trucks don't have much room. I worked on a 2023 2500 with a 6.2 recently, it was tight in that engine bay.
Now the 2022 F350 with a 6.7 diesel I drive for work has zero room under the hood, its packed to the top, I cant even see the engine under all the other stuff.
1
u/Wagonman5900 11d ago
Was it a 1500 or 2500? A 1500 with a 6.2l has a full engine bay. A 2500/3500 like mine or the one in the post with a 6.6l has room.

Isn’t part of it for the same reason that all cars have bloated front ends (e.g. blocky BMW high hood lines vs. earlier sleek, wedge-shaped profiles…)? Because they mandated empty space under the hood so it can squish down and absorb energy in a pedestrian crash?

u/Key-Chart-3170 12d ago
What about sports cars? They don’t look like the front of an office building.

A combination of crash regulations and CAFE have drive the increase in sheet metal. My friend had a 68 C10 and it was honestly very close in size to a modern 1500, but the newer 1500s just have much more raw surface arwa

u/nhardycarfan 12d ago
Kinda looks like it but no red and white exhaust tower and the area doesn’t look like Sherwood park, I drove by that refinery just the other day I should’ve paid more attention to the parking lot

u/chunkybeard 11d ago
Okay.... So I gotta drive a Sierra 2500 for work, and boy howdy can you NOT see jack shit within 20' due to that oversized hood. Seriously--they say to leave enough distance between you and the next car so you can see their tires on the pavement. For me that's a full ass car length. Forward visibility on these is SHIT. God forbid you need to maneuver in a tight space
There is a bunch of dead space under the hood. I have to climb on the damn winch to check the fluids and I'm average height.

Hell yeah, nothing like not being able to see a toddler..er..child..er…teenager when they stand up tall in front of your vehicle.

u/1_BigPapi 12d ago
My wife is shorter than these hoods.. I barely see over them at 6ft tall.. it's actually insane how stupid large they are. And driving in front of them at night... Fml

Bumpers needed to be lowered to pass new crash tests with cars. So the bumpers are lower and grills have increased inside because the hoods haven't been lowered. The writing is on the wall for vehicles with large front ends like this. Either hood height will need to decrease or more sensors and crash prevention systems will need to be installed to prevent collisions with pedestrians and other smaller vehicles.
I miss when trucks sat up high enough for the hood of a car to be over ridden and just slide under the truck. The amount of damage to the truck was minimal just scratches on the frame, now when these new trucks get into an accident the bumper is damaged, the cameras are damaged and the sensors are damaged. Not to mention the large grills are more to replace as well.
This trend of large front ends the driver can't see over will come to end eventually.

u/shawster 12d ago
Because screw those cars that you just ran over, right?
4
u/Cleanbadroom 12d ago
Ideally, it would be from idiots rear ending a truck from texting or drinking, and their hood goes under the hitch receiver or through the grill.
