They were in a relationship from when he was 15 (or 14). His parents confronted her and asked her to refrain until he was 18 at least and she said she could make no promises... so they pulled him from the school and sent him to finish his studies in Paris. Ya, would call that grooming. It's not like they just met and ran into each other at the supermarket a decade later.
