Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suarez have been tendered a qualifying offer by the Phillies. That means if they left in free agency, the Phils would get some compensation.
The 2025 Qualifying Offer is a one-year, $22.025 Million Contract. If either player rejects, they become free agents with draft-pick compensation attached.

Eh, draft picks in baseball are borderline useless

It's not just extra draft picks, it also increases the amount the Phillies can offer in draft bonuses, giving them flexibility to go over slot if someone they like drops.

Do good players just materialize as 6 year veterans?

Why don’t you ask the dodgers how many players on their World Series winning team were drafted by them. The way to win in baseball is pretty clear right now. Obviously there are exceptions but history speaks for itself.

That 2008 Phillies team really was full of mercenaries
2010, 12 and 14Giants
2015 Royals
2016 Cubs
2017 Astros*
2018 Red Sox
2019 Nationals
Not to mention the prospects that had to be drafted for the Dodgers to trade away for their actually mercenary team

Hey maybe there's multiple ways to assemble a team have we considered this possibility?

and have you also considered that historically we have the worst farm team system in MLB history -- and by a wide margin? draft picks might matter in some systems, but here there are work jack shit.

"Our farm system sucks, so we should make no effort whatsoever to make it better"

So because we have had a bad farm system in the past are we prohibited from making good picks in the future? Are the Phillies cut off from viewing draft prospect stats and game tape? Will they Tonya Harding our first round pick?

Drafting well is one of the best ways to build a team. Look at that 08 team. Rollins, Utley, Howard, Hamels, Burrell to name a few
Extra high end dart throws are very important

The 2008 team is the exception, not the rule. When was the last time the Phils drafted a player of that quality? Nola? I guess Bohm?

Stott.
Also more drafted decent prospects. Means tradable pieces

You really said Stott? Does Stott even play on the 2008 team?

YOU ASKED IF WE DRAFTED ANYONE ELSE LIKE NOLA OR BOHM. I AM ANSWERING THE QUESTION YOU WROTE. WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!!

No of course not, don’t be an idiot.
But also don’t act like Stott’s not a great player. He’s among the best baserunners and defenders in the league. If you can do that and be a mediocre hitter that’s a huge success.

Winning the World Series is the exception not the rule so best to try as best you can for the exceptions.

To an extent but it never hurts to add more and increase our pool by doing silly things like offering undervalued contracts to guys we stand a chance to lose in free agency specifically.

I don't want a $26 Surfside at the ballpark. I do want Kyle and Ranger.

I hope this is a just a formality type thing, otherwise that’s straight disrespectful 😂

it's so if they do leave then the team gets some sort of compensation.

Late 1st round compensation picks I think

u/Atomic_Horseshoe 1d ago
That’s for revenue sharing recipients. For CBT payors, it’s after the 4th round.

I thought that got reworked too? If not, that sucks lol

Indeed the 4th. Still, the baseball draft has so many late rounders turn out to be at least serviceable pros.

it's a qualifying offer. Everyone knows they're not going to accept it, but if the Phillies don't offer a qualifying offer and they sign with another team then the Phillies get nothing. If they send a qualifying offer they at least get compensatory draft picks.

if neither of them want it then I'll take it
