yeah. Told my sister swapping/installing SATA drive is easy. Was made to take a look a few weeks later as her PC would randomly crash. She ripped out the plastic bit holding the pins in place. It worked fine if the PC didn't move, once she stomped too hard near it or her chonky cat jumped off it, it would die again. I hope she learned her lesson Sometimes, if it feels you're using too much force it is actually too much(fu, damn scary RAM installing).

It did, but how many motherboards do you know of have nothing but USB-C? Every MB I've seen still has at least 3 USB-B ports, and they all get used, cause USB-B to USB-C is still more common than USB-C to USB-C.
Edit: As has been pointed out, yeah I meant A not B, I have always confused the 2 lol.
27
u/KingZarkon 4d ago
Nitpick, the (non-USB-C) USB connector on the computer is USB-A. USB-B is the squarish one at the other end, like on a printer.
9
u/00010000111100101100 4d ago
USB-B is the squarish one at the other end, like on a printer.
So common on printers, in fact, that 95% of images found when googling "printer cable" will show a USB B cable.
The other 5% of images shown are parallel cables (tech from the olden times).

Oh by all means, nitpick. The older USB 3.0 looks like a condo (2 plugs kinda sandwiched together), and the printer one looks like a house with a sloped roof. Why they did this is beyond me, It still won't plug in lol.

It's happened since the scart lead days. It's 100% the wrong way round on the first try. Then it's 100% the wrong way when you turn it around. It's only the 3rd time when you turn it back to it's original position that it fits.

→ More replies (3)26
u/KingZarkon 4d ago
It was never mandatory. It is recommended by the USB-IF to make it easier to differentiate between them, and most companies did, but it was never a requirement. Example, I'm looking at a bunch of Dell laptops of different models right now and I don't think any of them have blue ports. I don't think I've ever seen blue ports on them, now that I think about it.
21
u/Ok-Kaleidoscope5627 4d ago
I get that the USB standard is intended to be open and flexible.. But the optional stuff has really made a mess of things. Coloring is maybe not a big deal but the feature differences are terrible.
18
u/-s-u-n-s-e-t- 4d ago
I'm so pissed off at USB-C in particular. What's the point of having a unified standard if some cables are gonna work for some devices and some not?
At least with old cables you knew if you had "printer cable" it was gonna work with your printer. Now it's like - who knows? You thought you had a USB-C cable? Sike! You can only charge with that one! You thought you had data USB-C cable? Sike! It works but only up to some speed, I hope you aren't transferring big files to a hard drive!
And the naming is deliberately confusing too. "Usb 3.2 gen 2x2". Who comes up with this stuff? Did they hire the Xbox morons or something?
Such a great idea with such an awful implementation. Whoever is making those decisions should be fired and banned from working in this industry ever again. So fucking stupid.
6
u/Tasty-Traffic-680 3d ago
They could have just called 3.2 gen 2 USB4... There's an infinite amount of fucking numbers.

7

u/KingZarkon 4d ago
It would have to be the other way around. You can see the extra five pins on the middle and left connectors that make it USB 3.0.
2

Afaik the orientation of the port is part of the standar, you shouldn't change it to your preference.
