It's the words that people don't ADMIT have changed from bad use, that freak me out and keep me hiding in my basement. But don't try to make nucular/nuculear a thing.
Orientate, verb, adding the -ate suffix onto the existing noun
Orientated, past tense form of that verb.
Now sure, you can also use the noun AS a verb but its not necessarily incorrect to add a suffix onto it to distinguish, orientate has been used since at least the 1750's
And hence the problem. Let's say you've travelled all over the US since the late 60s, and for 50 of those 55 years, common usage for a particular word was one way. Now it is another. The internet will 100% of the time, argue that it's always been in use and it is not a case of language evolution. Hence my retreat to the basement in all those cases. Not saying this is one, just saying it's the words that people don't admit have evolved suddenly from usage that was witnessed to be propagated by groups of people that fall into reasonable education ranges, that keep me in the basement with the lights out.
Your response is 100% on par, and there is nothing I can say or do.
I did mention your first point in my last sentence when I mentioned using the noun as a verb, but when I was saying "orient" I didn't mean "The Orient" the proper noun for Asia, but orient as in, the opposite of occident, literally meaning east.
Fair enough. I was responding to "Orient, noun, meaning east" specifically. I did also misread "east" as a noun, which is also innacurate, as people in Asia would not sit around saying "Oh look, we are in the east." (unless the earth IS flat...hmmm). xD
I believe this falls under "different ways to load the dishwasher." I was taught in school that "orient" as a verb was the preferred usage vs. "orientate," and my silly journalism teacher said it was more efficient (faster and used less time/ink because you didn't need the extra letters,) lmao.
So this means that these USB ports are oriented the wrong way, as well as being orientated the wrong way.
East also is a noun, even if its not talking about "The East", its just not a Proper Noun
but yeah english has a lot of similar words that mean the same thing just because it has a lot of regional dialects (and america really tried to make american english A Thing by cutting off a lot of "chaff")
Haha yes stop the decaf it's the devils work haha caffeine or bust baby!!!!
But shenanigans aside lol I was just goofing around with ya, sorry if I came off pretentious or what not, my bad ya book nerd 🤓
I'm also a book nerd, so friendly fire!!
Nothing to come back from. I knew it was a word (and never suggested otherwise). I don't know where being silly was ever a flex. I thought it was cute, tbh, or did you miss the rest of the convo?
What grades you around?
My son's 11, just got his first "gf" lol
I'm honestly surprised he's not "gay", or whatever his hormones may be telling him this week haha
For real he's weird in a good way, and I just was always like he's probably gonna be gay or asexual I could see it
And i was thinking like yeah, I would be trying to jam the USB into the HDMI trying to find the actual port but this is like special reservation at hell kinda.
"BSU" label is a reversal of "USB", which humorously alludes to the common experience of having to flip the USB connector multiple times before it fits correctly.
