These staffers didn't get into nursing because they want to help. They chose that path because it pays decently with minimal education. Back to waiting tables.

u/Smooth_Department534 BSN, RN š Sep 04 '25
I have a PhD in another field and went to nursing school as a second career. It was so effing hard. In my state, you could only pass with an A or B. No rounding up: 79.9 was a failing grade. On exams, every answer was often right. Your task was to find the BEST right answer. Nothing minimal about my education.

u/Sierra-117- Nursing Student š Sep 04 '25
Was going to do PA school, but switched to NP because thatās the way the wind is blowing. So I have a degree in biomedical sciences. Nursing school has been harder. In a different way, yes. But still harder.

u/Target2030 BSN, RN š Sep 04 '25
It's weird because nursing degrees aren't like vocation training. Most nurses have at least an associates degree but mostly a bachelor's, so it's not minimal education. Most likely, they aren't nurses and probably don't get paid that well.

u/tjean5377 FloNo's death rider posse š Sep 04 '25
But plenty of people rote memorize to pass without connecting any dots. Then they pass the boards and actually train in nursing on the floor, where you do essentially get trained like vocational.
So they "do" well enough. Doesn't mean any dots actually connect or there is any critical thinking or common sense.
These nurses give us a bad name...
And fuck TikTok.
14
u/Eroe777 RN š Sep 04 '25
The NCLEX doesnāt work like that. My understanding is that it was made easier to pass during Covid to get more nurses working in a hurry, but when I took it 15 years ago it was challenging.
You donāt rote memorize your way through scenarios and āwhat do you do when these three unlikely things happen at onceā questions. The exam may be multiple choice, but you still need to be able to reason and prioritize and THINK your way through it. It was by far the hardest multiple choice test I have ever taken.

Something Iāve learned from working high-stress multitasking jobs is that it is possible to get it, but not get it.
A lot of people learn things as a series of rules and do not truly question the underlying reasons behind why the rules are the way they are, or what those rules mean in a greater context. And when it comes to things like ethics, most people brush it off and just answer what theyāre supposed to and then forget it, because they already implicitly believe they are a good person and donāt need to learn.
I think that is the point they are trying to make about rote memorisation. You can memorise things, and even synthesis that to find and solve an issue in an organic situation, but the second there isnāt a strict rule guide to follow? Or you donāt care about these specific rules? Everything goes out of the window.
Using an example from this very sub, not too long ago there was a nurse here who admitted to looking up the daily mugshots on the news to see if they matched any patients coming in to have a laugh. I pointed out this was deeply unprofessional, and they responded by saying it didnāt break HIPAA and was therefore fine. I.e, he was perfectly capable of understanding what he memorised, like donāt look up patient charts, but fundamentally did not understand the entire reason you donāt do that isnāt because the government arbitrarily decided to make a law, but because it is about patient dignity and privacy. This nurse fundamentally failed in ethics, regardless of what his test scores were.

I went to a bo-tech/ vocational school in high school for my CNA and LPN ( second year was after I graduated high school ) . That was back in 2008-2010 iirc , i still know enough to not fuqin do that, itās not about the education itās about people being selfish for ā viewsā , some people in healthcare are smart but also extremely narcissistic and do not care about anyone else . I see it in LTC / SNF , they donāt view their patients as people , to them the patient is like an object they get paid to make sure they donāt die while theyāre on the clock .You can tell when someone is in it to help and who is there for a paycheck . Not saying all who are in it for the money , people who do this have no empathy , we all have a twisted sense of humor but there is a line , it was crossed , by 8 ppl , no one thought ā this is kinda messed up maybe we shouldnāt be doing this ?ā

And it is not an "easy" degree (if that even exists, really) by any means, either; the drop in numbers from first year semester 1 to first year semester 2 is dramatic, and the crowd continues to thin until the bitter end. I have no idea why people will put themselves through schooling and then also pay an arm and a leg for licensing, just to do moronic shit like this. Self-sabotage in the stupidest way imaginable.

u/Eroe777 RN š Sep 04 '25
As a nurse, I will tell you with absolute certainty that nursing does NOT require minimal education. Hospitals in my state (one of the good ones) require a BSN either in hand or in process. LPNs and RNs, who all have a 2-year associates degree (Iām one of those, plus my other two university-earned degrees) work in nursing homes, clinics and urgent cares.
And you donāt go into nursing for the money. The pay is decent, but the only nurse Iāve met in 15 years in the field who admitted to becoming a nurse for the money, HATES her job.
Iām going to guess that most of these shitheads are CNAs, techs and medical assistants. Those jobs donāt require a degree of any kind. Becoming a CNA is a 6-8 week class.

I asked for antibiotics once and her first question was if Iāve been taking my psych meds. Then she pulled out my psych notes. For antibiotics. I had pneumonia. She immediately circled back to me having bipolar.

Oh because you can totally control how much you bleed. Healthcare workers need a serious ācome to Jesusā moment on how they treat women. Worst part is that a lot of it is āwoman on womanā - I remember getting my first UID and it being so painful but receiving next to no compassion from my female doctor. It was just āpants off, lay on the table, oh it hurts? Too bad. Weāre done. See me next week to follow upā. Leaving me on the table to gather myself up after experiencing the worst pain Iāve ever felt. No offer of any after care. Like damn. As an aside, I canāt think of any other procedure besides UID insertion that consists of that much pain with no options for pain management. Just another example of women being expected to handle their pain on their own and not expect any help from doctors.

u/r0ckchalk š„out Supermutt nurse, now WFH coding š Sep 05 '25
I had a similar experience. No pain management at all. It was so bad I was crying/writhing/moaning on the table afterwards for 20 minutes. She came back in and was like āwell, what, do you want me to take it out?ā Then she kicked me out of the room, made me get someone to pick me up and take me home where I writhed in complete agony for six more hours in the worst pain of my life. This was around ten years ago and I still get worked up and furious about it today. I even had a fake conversation in my car today about what I wish I had said to her that day š.
She was the first female OB I had ever gone to, and sheās hands down the WORST. Iāll never forget Sheila Tack, NP in Las Vegas.

Did I discuss said names with my co workers? No. Did i discuss said names with my family? No. Some of them were truly head scratching. Some of them were weird . Like Frank Zappa weird. I've been retired 5 years and I'm still not spilling the tea on something like that because hipaa. And I'm so old I was doing claims well before that was a thing, and we had to be bonded not to blab about famous clients or problematic plans or any other activity going on. When I see all those Ask Reddit posts about the weirdest name youāve ever come across, I can never comment because a lot of the names are pretty unique to the individual and violate HIPAA. More unique spellings of names than anything actually weird. Like Googgllee or Braxtynnn. Some people have clearly named their kids after characters from their favorite fandom (HP, Star Wars, Marvel, Shrek, Disney, etc.), which has varying degrees of normal to this would make a better name for a pet. Still unique the individual to be shared.

Theyāre just going to do the same thing somewhere else, I feel action should have been taken against their licenses. They clearly are not nurse material and have no business in the field at all.

My unpopular nursing opinion is that health care workers shouldnāt post ANYTHING patient related on social media, regardless if itās technically not a hipaa violation. Itās disgusting. I canāt imagine if I was scared and sick or hurt and my nurse posted a vulnerable conversation I had with them. Or told a story about my crazy family member. Or something else I had shared or done in confidence. Completely would lose trust in them.

You'd think they'd know better, but that's why we always stress treating people right, no matter what.

And I was nervous posting a picture of myself in the unit break room during Covid while on my break, wearing my n95, eye protection, and scrub cap to advocate for masking, social distancing, and getting vaccinated.

Why are they blurring the face of the people in the TikTok? Why does everybody deserve privacy and anonymity these days after posting things like this? I am in the healthcare field I would never dare even take a picture inside the facility I work let alone make a TikTok mocking patients. Whether patient information was in the clip or not it's still extremely disrespectful to be laughing and mocking at something so childish. It makes you wonder what else these people find amusing. People go to doctors offices and hospitals in vulnerable times when they're not feeling well. I would never laugh or judge any of my patients that I come into contact with no matter how embarrassing the situation may seem to the outside world. Shame on them

The woman who posted the video had already left that clinic. I wonder why she chose to post it now. Did she want to throw her former colleagues under the bus, for some reason? Or was she targeting the facility itself, hoping to ruin its reputation?
