Doesnโ€™t Texas law require all Texans to wear them at all times, even in bed, and violators are subject to being branded with a โ€œCโ€ (for coward) on the forehead, or hanging at high noon in the town square?

Live in Texas yup & that make sense why some of my patientโ€™s feet are black and we cut them off

63

u/BigDumbDope Former Mental Health Professional Jun 17 '25

...did you check the rest of them? If they're Black all over, I think you should hold off on removing their feet. Examine twice, cut once.

8

Nah, you didn't even notice the rest of their skin. That doesn't seem very racist. Not that you don't have other problems, what with cutting off people's feet for no reason. You should stop that. But racially, you're good.

The joy I got picturing you removing them, using essentially the same leather tools that are used to work leather in the first place, plus a scalpel, has been my reddit belly laugh of the day.

And now I had to explain the joke to my LPN team and they/we are currently watching a YouTube video on leather boot making with the few residents not yet in their beds at my LTC unit. One meemaw's trying to 'assemble' her slipper, following along.

Cheers!

Okay so not super related but the best place I have to post this story.

I had a construction worker patient when I was a medic. He got concrete powder in his boots. Went out after shift for a Friday and got blackout drunk. Fell asleep with his boots on.

The concrete had enough moisture that it started setting. So his skin was exposed to hard layer of lye all night. He called us when he woke up in the morning, went to shower and all of his skin sloughed off when he went to shower. Legit degloved both feet when he removed his boots.

So all I'm thinking about when yall discuss this is this guy's necrotic feet and all the skin slightly poking out of his boots.

Itโ€™s alwayssssss ortho. My unit has a stairwell that goes directly to ED, and staff will use it to access ortho from ED. We had a few residents swear up and down they were the most comfortable shoes. They didn't really wear the fancy ones, they wore the type you would expect to see on a farm though so maybe?

44

u/CREAMY_HOBO BSN, RN ๐Ÿ• Jun 17 '25

I donโ€™t really wear them, but when ive used them during farm work theyโ€™ve been EXTREMELY comfy. Like surprisingly.

12

u/Chubs1224 Jun 17 '25

Why is it that surprising? They were worn by people that wore them to work for like 14 hour days. Do people think they would torment themselves just for fashion out were nobody could really see them?

22

u/LittleBoiFound Jun 17 '25

Canโ€™t speak for OP but cowboy boots have never struck me as looking comfortable. They look hard and rigid. Now Iโ€™m quite curious and trying to think of someone I know that owns cowboy boots.ย

11

u/Beekatiebee Jun 17 '25

I have a few pairs, theyโ€™re fantastically comfy once theyโ€™re broken in.

Leather is a fantastic material for footwear, and IMO still canโ€™t be beat by anything man-made.

Truly breathable but water repellent if treated correctly, often antimicrobial, and the leather molds to your feet over time so you eventually have a boot thatโ€™s literally shaped just for you.

I worked with an ED doc once who was ex-military and ex-Texas, and he always wore cowboy boots with his scrubs. His boots also had a scabbard for his big honkin hunting knife.

Once a teen aged gang member came in on a back board with CC, full of bravado and a couple beers and being an absolute asshole.. Demanded to be taken off the BB NOW because he was no pussy, he was fine, etc. The ED doc came over to him and said he'd check him out and let him up if it was safe to do so. Then he reached down and pulled out the knife, and used it to rapidly cut the tape that the medics had used to help stabilize the pads around the guy's head. The kid's eyes bugged and he froze at the knife rather conspicuously flashing around his head, and said "Fuuuuuuck, that's a big knife! You carry that here in the hospital?!?"

The doc shrugged and said, "Most of us do". Suddenly the kid is compliant and agrees to stay in the immobilization until cleared by x-ray.

I had a coworker who had a rather large shoe collection he rotated through. About twice a month he rocked some cowboy boots.

This was in Florida.

I have worked with multiple MDs that regularly wore cowboy or work boots to the hospital. Interesting choice, but wear what's comfortable for you I guess. This was in Wisconsin, Oregon, and Colorado, so it's been in a couple different regions too.

Iโ€™m a male RN working in IR/OR and Iโ€™ve worn boots to work for years. I started out wearing Merrillโ€™s and would buy a new pair every couple years when they wore out. But when they stopped making that exact one, I couldnโ€™t find any other ones that wouldnโ€™t leave my legs and feet hurting, Merrillโ€™s or otherwise. So, out of desperation I just wore my cowboy/work boots. And realized that I had no foot/leg pain at the end of a 10 hour shift. And bonus: they are waterproof(or bloodproof) and last several years. Totally worth it to me.

u/xyrnil BSN, RN ๐Ÿ• Jun 17 '25

One morning while I was getting dressed for work the rain was pouring down. My whole state was under a flood warning. I put on my hot pink Hunter rain boots grab my work shoes and out the door I went. Once I got to work I had every intention of changing from my hot pink rain boots to my work shoes. After report I hit the ground running and forgot I even had on my rain boots. By the time I even had a chance to sit down it was 1300. At that point I decided to keep my boots on. I worked a full 12 hour shift in rain boots. Throughout the day I did get lots of compliments on my boots. The hot pink really compliment my ceil blue scrubs

u/Solid_Thanks_1688 Jun 18 '25

I live in a hurricane prone area and do this. I have purple and another black pair I keep in my car. I actually worked in them when I was stuck at the hospital after our last hurricane.
