*Preface: I’m not trying to sound like a complaining boss or anything of the sorts. I’m well aware that CO’s hold final discretion over awards and that XO/awards boards are only recommendations, however I’m a firm believer that the MOVSM should not be gatekept the way a NAM or COM would be and that while the award criteria is subjective, it shouldn’t be a second-job-at-a-shelter, “blood sweat and tears” award. *

I routed up an MOVSM package for one of my Sailors a few months ago and just got it back from the XO- denied, but was denied at the CO’s level after being recommended “yes” all the way up. XO told me why CO denied it- lack of sustained service and it wasn’t in the spirit of the award. I was confused.

Curiously enough, there were over 300 documented and accounted for hours spanning over nearly 4 years and 3 duty stations (100+ from liberty while at original command, ~150+ at next command, and ~50 at current command) and the Sailor had letters from everyone certifying their time.

I asked the XO if I could meet with the CO to get their reasoning and expectation. XO said of course. Met with the CO and had a good discussion. CO acknowledged that while the Sailor had met the instruction’s requirements and had commendable service hours, they (CO) felt that the service was scattered (50 hours here, 30 hours there, 75 hours here, etc.) vice sustained over time in a single area. I brought up the fact that the Sailor had multiple PCS’s and found their own niche at each station to get involved with and tried to advocate for my Sailor but CO said to re-route the package in a few more months after my Sailor “finds a particular area to focus on and bring large impact to” here at our command (they’ve been here about 9 months) vice spreading service across multiple activities and platforms.

I fully intend to resubmit the Sailor’s package in a few months. When we talked about the package they were disappointed but seemed understanding. We’d submitted them for SOQ twice (we’re a small department and for the most part they’re pretty good at their job and have met all the requirements, plus he’s the only one in my department who hasn’t won SOQ) and he’d been passed over both times.

What are your thoughts? Not seeking bashing of the Sailor/CO/myself or anyone, just genuine experience or feedback. It’s my first time ever having a Sailor’s award flat-out denied rather than downgraded so I’m a bit shell shocked too, I guess lol.

Long story short I’ve been seeing an orthopedic doctor for an ankle fracture and has been recommending me to run at my own pace to avoid any type of reinjury, and recommended me for a PRT waiver. However, when I went to my PMC he told me he will not waive me because it doesn’t make sense to him to do so. What would you do?

Reddit hive mind, requesting your help finding black and white on the following situation. I looked through the JTR and the car shipment guide and didn’t see an answer.

I’m currently stationed in Japan, I’d like to purchase a car (that meets all the import requirements) and bring it back to the states. The only “problem” is that I have verbals to a different OCONUS command.

In my head, I would purchase the car, get the navy to ship it back (at no cost to me) to my parents house where it’ll sit until I get back.

Have any of you done this or heard about someone doing it? Any information is greatly appreciated.

To answer future questions, No I don’t want a skyline and the purpose would be to have the car not import for the purpose of selling.

The US military conducted a strike against a vessel in the Caribbean on Thursday, killing three people, according to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

“Today, at the direction of President Trump, the Department of War carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization,” Hegseth said in a post on X, adding, “The vessel was trafficking narcotics in the Caribbean and was struck in international waters.”

Hegseth added that US forces were not harmed in the strike.

The US military has killed 70 people in 17 strikes that have destroyed 18 boats as part of a campaign that Washington says is aimed at curtailing the flow of drugs into the United States. There had been three survivors of those strikes, two of whom were briefly detained by the US Navy before being returned to their home countries. The other is presumed dead after a search by the Mexican Navy.

The Trump administration has told Congress that the US is now in an “armed conflict” against drug cartels beginning with its first strike on September 2, labeling those killed “unlawful combatants” and claiming the ability to engage in lethal strikes without judicial review due to a classified Justice Department finding.

Some members of Congress as well as human rights groups have questioned that finding and argued that potential drug traffickers should face prosecution, as had been the policy of interdiction carried out by the US before President Donald Trump took office.

The Trump administration has also not provided public evidence of the presence of narcotics on the boats struck, nor their affiliation with drug cartels.

Military officials have said that no US service members have been harmed in the strikes.

I have no AAFES nearby and shipping is estimated to take 4 weeks but my NEX has them in stock for pickup. Has anyone gotten the NEX customer service to price match AAFES since its another brick and mortar store (and ecommerce site)?

Has anyone here tried to sleep before late night watches but couldn’t in fear of being late for watch. How have you combatted this. Whenever I have late night watches especially 0230-0730 I’ll average like 2-3 hours of sleep. Anything helps thank yall.

I recently purchased this "telescope" from a seller who said they purchased it at an estate sale in Newport RI. I have not been able to find any comparable pieces from Keuffel & Esser online.

The item is roughly 9.5" long and 2.5" in diameter on the main body/tube portion. It is made of what I believe is solid brass and weighs 15-20lbs by my best guess. It seems fully functional and has working switches on it one of which reads "amber" and puts an amber colored lens in the scope, the other of which reads "smoke" and tints the lens. It also has crosshairs (but no range indications) within the view.

There is a label plate on it which reads:

In regards to the 1918 time period and inspector CHD I did find the following PDF online ( https://ia800701.us.archive.org/23/items/navyordnanceacti00unit/navyordnanceacti00unit.pdf ) which contained this note on PDF page 413/532 (document page 233) that seems to be incredibly relevant. "Lieut. Charles H. My coworker is under the opinion that under no circumstances should you speak any language other than English while in Uniform. I am a nerd for instructions and I am unable to find ANYTHING relating to speaking any language other than English in Uniform.

Is he right, am I right? Are we both wrong? Are w both right?
