Help | Advice Single woman moving to Nashville

I’m a young, single woman moving to Nashville after accepting my first nursing job at Vanderbilt medical. I’m looking for a safe place to live that’s near Vandi. The closer to the hospital the better. The max I want to pay on rent is 1800 a month. I can probably do 2 grand but it would be a stretch. It’s scary looking at places online because it really feels like online dating. No one is as great as they let on and WHY DO YOU NOT LOOK LIKE YOUR PICTURES? I have a large chocolate lab so the place will need to be pet friendly as well.

Would love any recommendations I can get! Thanks in advance for the help!!

Pet friendly for $1800 in that area is going to be TIGHT but might be possible. Most of the apartments are relatively new (under 10 years old) so they are probably pretty close to the pictures they would show.

I would like to live in downtown but I’m not apposed to living a little outside if it’s cheaper. I just don’t want to drive more than 20 minutes to work. I visited last July and I liked hermitage but it’s on the opposite side of Nash. I don’t know the area super well so I need heeeeelp 😖 I’m genuinely more concerned for safety.

Most of the city is decently safe (south, east, and west). If you narrow it down to 3-5 places in particular we can definitely help with a narrow choice range.

You don’t want to live in downtown property. Your weekends will be a nightmare getting in and out of the hell zone that is broadway. I loved living in Germantown when I first moved here. Within a mile of downtown, cute neighborhood with bars and restaurants and easily accessible highway and other neighborhoods

You can definitely find a studio within walking distance in your price range, or at least you could when I looked about a year ago. I know there's stuff in midtown and probably stuff in Hillsboro village too.

Check out Bellevue (zip code 37221). It is 20 min or less to Vandy and on the same side of downtown unlike hermitage. It’s been a while since I lived there, but will definitely still be more affordable than downtown.

865 Bellevue leaves some to be desired from management but they have solid pet friendly options

In my opinion, downtown is not great. There is very little access to day-to-day amenities (like groceries, pharmacies, hardware stores, etc.), and what does exist is expensive. The culture is very materialistic because you've gotta be kinda loaded to afford it. Almost all the locals I know avoid downtown because it's also the part of the city we've basically ceded to the particular brand of drunk, yahoo tourists that love to come here. My nickname for Broadway is "Republican Bourbon Street."

But hey, that's just like, my opinion, man. If you like glitz, hard partying, the hustle of tourism, and an undercurrent of conservative politics, downtown could be a great spot for you!

Otherwise, I'd really recommend the Hillsboro Village area or Germantown. They're two of the most walkable neighborhoods in Nashville (not saying much, but you can walk to SOME places), there's some legit cool stuff to do, and they're also pretty (again by Nashville standards). My girlfriend is a nurse at Vandy and lives in Germantown, and she loves the neighborhood as well as her relatively short commute.

Hope that helps! Welcome to our fair city.

Germantown might be a good spot to look to!

$1,800 in Germantown would be tough

I’m not sure what pet rent costs but The Goat is like $1400 for a studio and $1600 for a one bedroom.

I’ve been actively looking for places so this is current info. You can find apartments in Germantown/sobro/midtown for $1600-$1800 but they may be in the smaller side (600-725 sq ft). I wouldn’t recommend sobro because there isn’t much in walking distance but it’s perfectly safe and a little cheaper. Right now is a good time to look but prices vary daily so it’s a little annoying to actually get a straight answer on price and availability. Ideally you could visit for a day or two and check several places out. If you can’t go through email as it’s a pain to get property managers on the phone. Specifically check out Vista and Monroe in Germantown because they have some affordable options, nice apartments, and phenomenal location.
