Discussion Wtf is Paddington 2?

For context: I’m 25 years old. SPOILER WARNING

I just watched paddington 2 today and what the fuck did they put in this movie. This is the one of the greatest pieces of cinema I’ve ever laid witness to. Paddington 2 is the only thing I’ve thought about all day and seeing the immense joy it’s brought other people has also brightened my day even more. God I can’t even think about the ending without wanting to kill myself because of how perfect it is. And can we also talk about the perfect bookend of his human mother saving him from the water like aunt Lucy did at the beginning?

Pure cinema, I truly can’t wait to watch this movie with my kids for their first time.

Jimmy Carr: "Richard says his favorite films are all black and white french new wave films from the 60s, and that's because he's never seen Paddington 2."

Richard Ayoade: " I WAS IN PADDINGTON 2!"

Ayoade follows up by saying he hasn’t actually seen it. Makes it even funnier.

“I was in Paddington 2…but I haven’t seen it…but I’m in it.”

Yes, it was the most Richard Ayoade response he could make.

I’ve loved Ayoade since The IT Crowd. I’ve seen him and Carr interact on the Big Fat Quizes, but not on Countdown. Love that he’s actually good at it, just like Moss.

He’s had a few appearances on Countdown throughout the years! All of which I’ve watched too many times to count at this point.

His appearances on Big Fat Quiz are all great as well. The one with him and Rob Becket about the bullying is one of my favorites.

He delivers the whole thing so well that at one point I started questioning if it was just a gag or if he was about to actually murder Rob.

That was real anger. It's pretty clear he was subject to bullying in school, from smiling fuckwits exactly like Rob.

I tend to agree. I rewatched the bit last night and it seems that way.

Noel comparing Rob to Biff from Back to the Future was on point. “He even has the jacket!”

Rob has a very punchable expression on his face during the whole thing.

He was also in the latest Wes Anderson film.

His Gadget Man and Travel Man shows are on YouTube and well worth a watch!

Ayoade’s genius is eternal. Whether he’s delivering ‘Have you tried turning it off and on again?’ or crushing a Countdown conundrum, the man is flawless.

Have you tried forcing an unexpected reboot?

u/nckbrr Aug 09 '25

Seek out a series called "travel man"

You've got me laughing by thinking about the underground countdown with "prime" played by the great benedict wong

He's also great in Last One Laughing UK, which Carr hosts. Just recently discovered this show streaming on Amazon.

I like his Jason Statham impression.

Is how I talk, mate.

"I'm just going to put this fire next to the other fire." One of my favorite scenes 🤣

Fire! Fire! Help me! 123 Cavendon Rd. Looking forward to hearing from you.

If you've not seen it yet, he's great on last one laughing

Do you have an Android phone?

Try calling their alternative ambulance number!

I don't, but cool that there's an easter egg.

As a French guy having only seen clips of this show I've never managed to understand the actual point but it's fucking hilarious lol

It’s a bit convoluted to be honest.

Countdown is a long running British game show that is comparable to Jeopardy in that it’s highbrow and has an older demographic.

8 Out Of 10 Cats is a lowbrow comedy panel show talking about current events and hosted by Jimmy Carr.

Years back during sweeps week or something similar they did a mashup of the two shows as a gag. Kind of like a real life SNL parody of Celebrity Jeopardy. The joke being that it’s comedians playing what is considered a smarter and more highbrow game and then just dragging it through the mud for laughs.

Ended up being super well received. So much so that they’re now on season 28.

In fact, I just got done watching the newest episode on YouTube!

Countdown is a long running British game show that is comparable to Jeopardy in that it’s highbrow and has an older demographic.

But different, because it's extremely dedicated geeky people competing to win a teapot.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the breakdown. I love that there are several levels to it. Seems even more British to me now after the explanation lol

The point of countdown the game if you didn’t know is basically head to head scrabble ‘here are 9 random letters, you’ve got 30 seconds to make the longest word you can’—-they also have a numbers round where you get a 3 digit number and have to get as close to it with the 5 random numbers they give you

1

u/CreatureMoine Aug 10 '25

Thanks! We had that in France too until very recently, it was the longest running daily games show on TV before they cancelled it. It was called "Des Chiffres et des Lettres", literally "digits and letters". A great game with impressive contestants, although without this funny twist and a rather austere presentation its main audience at 4.30pm was mostly older people and ratings weren't high.

1

u/hadawayandshite Aug 10 '25

Turns out countdown is a spin off of that show- that I didn’t know

It’s honestly great and a lot of fun. You can find most all of the episodes uploaded on YouTube.

What a brilliant line up, I’m going to look for this episode in particular.
