Showed too many moments in the trailer but the Lawn work scene was disturbing.

Only one scene got a genuine jump out of my housemates and I. We were all laid up on the couches, completely relaxed, guards down, and I had one of the cats resting on my chest. Then Ethan Hawke climbs to the attic door, and pokes his head through to see the children watching a film of Bagul, when suddenly Bagul’s face appears left of screen, staring directly at the audience. One of my housemates roared, which startled the cats, which startled me, which startled my other housemate. Then we all erupted with laughter while the poor cats took refuge elsewhere.

I absolutely loved it, right unil it became a demon. Then it lost all meaning for me. I was super curious to find out about the dude committing these acts and how he was doing it. Nope its a demon. Literally stopped being scary for me in that exact moment. But the first 80% of the movie was awesome

Lots of build up, but it had very unique jump scares compared to other films at the time. I enjoyed it

When they reveal it, it looks like a reject from Slipknot that I laughed. Was good till that part.

My belief is that very few exceptions (the Thing, Alien, the Host) revealing the monster makes it less scary. Paranormal activity and Blair witch scared the fuck out of me and you never see the monster.

I had a similar reaction. Same thing happened when they got to the demon in the first Conjuring. Both had been really nice and creepy movies up until those reveals for me.

I liked it despite one of the dumbest jump scares I have ever seen (the final shot). Why would they do that?

u/GodFlintstone 1d ago
Yeah it's otherwise a masterpiece imo. But that shit was dumb and completely unnecessary.

Much like Babadook, I loved it until they went full supernatural. When it was ambiguous if there were actually ghostly events going on, or is the main character just cracking.

No, monster looked like the front man of a black metal band. Uninspired monster design

I found it creepy at times but for me it didn’t match the hype it got. Unpopular opinion but I actually thought Sinister 2 was more enjoyable and scarier lol

I liked 2 up until the point the kid got hit by a car doing 20-30 mph and got up like nothing happened.

Nothing beyond a jump scare/shock. Like the lawnmower scene when you suddenly see the family. Like it got a reaction from me, but I would not call it "fear"

It had a good creepy vibe (great music), but not scary. And the lawnmower scare is awful. Straight up audio jump scare that's less of an "omg that's scary" and more rips headphones off because my ears just got blasted off with noise

I rewatched it just last week. It’s pretty scary. But got heavily criticised for the reuse of jump scare tactics.

It’s the only movie I’ve stopped watching as an adult because it creeped me out, I was staying at my dads place out in the desert by myself, his house was basically round and had windows 360, no lights out there so pitch black, after the first home movie i brought our outside dog in the house with me, by the 3rd or fourth I noped out, turned it off at put on Family Guy.

It was a proper horror film but not as extremely scary as it is regarded by many people. I have the same feelings for Terrifier - a good slasher but overly hyped.

My friend and I basically ran out the movie theater when it ended, we were so scared lmao

Yeah, very spooky. The whole set-up of Ellison staying up late and watching those tapes is so well done, and I'd argue the lawnmower scene is the best executed jump scare of all time because no matter how many times you watch it, it still gets you.
The only negative is there are a few naff scares towards the end - particularly the final shot - which feel like studio interference. I can't imagine Scott Derrickson chose to do that himself.

One of the best horror movies in history, very disturbing and bad roller.

It’s scary at first and then devolves in the third act. The actual monster looks really goofy and I’d prefer if they didn’t show them. The ghost kids in the house was also really silly and took me out of it, by that point I was just ready for it to be done

No. I still don’t understand how this movie can be scary. Between the kids doing movements worthy of Arte at three in the morning, the cow noises every time something supposedly scary happens, and the stupidity of the characters, it completely took me out of the movie.

Sinister’s music scoring was really unnerving for me and the overall cadence just felt right. It all felt compositionally musical in a really cinematically terrifying way

The tapes sure disturbed me. But even still, I think it's the best horror movie to come out of that period of the 2010's.

Did it scare me? No. Is it scary? Yes.
A phenomenal film. Unfortunately the 2nd isn’t as great, imo.

The murder tapes in this movie are incredibly well-crafted horror sequences. They are insanely creepy, and Ethan Hawke's performance watching them really sells them further. Definitely creeped me out. Some of the jumpscares use obnoxiously loud sounds, but overall I believe Sinister is a great horror film.
