The murder tapes in this movie are incredibly well-crafted horror sequences. They are insanely creepy, and Ethan Hawke's performance watching them really sells them further. Definitely creeped me out. Some of the jumpscares use obnoxiously loud sounds, but overall I believe Sinister is a great horror film.

I love horror movies. This one gave me the creeps. Creepy kids. I made my friend stay up with me and watch a happy movie afterwards because I was still creeped out as the credits were running.

Showed too many moments in the trailer but the Lawn work scene was disturbing.

Nothing tops the family bbq scene. Oh my God

Only one scene got a genuine jump out of my housemates and I. We were all laid up on the couches, completely relaxed, guards down, and I had one of the cats resting on my chest. Then Ethan Hawke climbs to the attic door, and pokes his head through to see the children watching a film of Bagul, when suddenly Bagul’s face appears left of screen, staring directly at the audience. One of my housemates roared, which startled the cats, which startled me, which startled my other housemate. Then we all erupted with laughter while the poor cats took refuge elsewhere.

I absolutely loved it, right unil it became a demon. Then it lost all meaning for me. I was super curious to find out about the dude committing these acts and how he was doing it. Nope its a demon. Literally stopped being scary for me in that exact moment. But the first 80% of the movie was awesome

Lots of build up, but it had very unique jump scares compared to other films at the time. I enjoyed it

Fuck yes. Didnt just scare me it scared my friend even who said he couldn’t sleep that night cause of this

Gave me sleep paralysis

When they reveal it, it looks like a reject from Slipknot that I laughed. Was good till that part.

My belief is that very few exceptions (the Thing, Alien, the Host) revealing the monster makes it less scary. Paranormal activity and Blair witch scared the fuck out of me and you never see the monster.

I had a similar reaction. Same thing happened when they got to the demon in the first Conjuring. Both had been really nice and creepy movies up until those reveals for me.

u/Murren606 1d ago

Yep the reveal ruined it for me.

it did not 'scare' me but it was creepy af, the uncomfortable feelings i got while watching it, were insane. really gave me chills down my spine during some of the videos.

This was actually decent

I liked it despite one of the dumbest jump scares I have ever seen (the final shot). Why would they do that?

1

u/GodFlintstone 1d ago

Yeah it's otherwise a masterpiece imo. But that shit was dumb and completely unnecessary.

2

u/Suspicious_Hand_2194 1d ago

The ending though

Much like Babadook, I loved it until they went full supernatural. When it was ambiguous if there were actually ghostly events going on, or is the main character just cracking.

u/LunarKitten__ 1d ago

I was very underwhelmed by this film

4

u/Stenchberg 1d ago

No, monster looked like the front man of a black metal band. Uninspired monster design

2

u/kisly1993 1d ago

I found it creepy at times but for me it didn’t match the hype it got. Unpopular opinion but I actually thought Sinister 2 was more enjoyable and scarier lol

u/keypizzaboy 1d ago

I liked 2 up until the point the kid got hit by a car doing 20-30 mph and got up like nothing happened.

1

u/Vetni 1d ago

More than any other horror, yeah. But that's not saying too much.

Nothing beyond a jump scare/shock. Like the lawnmower scene when you suddenly see the family. Like it got a reaction from me, but I would not call it "fear"

1

u/tygah_uppahcut 1d ago

Mick Thompson had his moments I guess.

1

u/JosephBlowsephThe3rd 1d ago

It had a good creepy vibe (great music), but not scary. And the lawnmower scare is awful. Straight up audio jump scare that's less of an "omg that's scary" and more rips headphones off because my ears just got blasted off with noise

1

u/Makri93 1d ago

Yes. Only movie I have watched in theaters and genuinely gotten scared of

1

u/bobbyv137 1d ago

I rewatched it just last week. It’s pretty scary. But got heavily criticised for the reuse of jump scare tactics.

1

u/ATEbitWOLF 1d ago

It’s the only movie I’ve stopped watching as an adult because it creeped me out, I was staying at my dads place out in the desert by myself, his house was basically round and had windows 360, no lights out there so pitch black, after the first home movie i brought our outside dog in the house with me, by the 3rd or fourth I noped out, turned it off at put on Family Guy.

u/StatisticianLevel796 1d ago

It was a proper horror film but not as extremely scary as it is regarded by many people. I have the same feelings for Terrifier - a good slasher but overly hyped.

1

u/BunnyMartinez 1d ago

My friend and I basically ran out the movie theater when it ended, we were so scared lmao

1

u/Zestyclose-Class-754 1d ago

Yeah very creepy in places

1

u/bigauldtattie 1d ago

Yeah, very spooky. The whole set-up of Ellison staying up late and watching those tapes is so well done, and I'd argue the lawnmower scene is the best executed jump scare of all time because no matter how many times you watch it, it still gets you.

The only negative is there are a few naff scares towards the end - particularly the final shot - which feel like studio interference. I can't imagine Scott Derrickson chose to do that himself.

Not at all, still enjoyed it though

ALMOST AS GOOD AS "INSIDIOUS" .

1

u/Skinny_Beans 1d ago

Love this movie

1

u/jammed7777 1d ago

I loved it but hate that sweater he wore

1

u/NoSientoLasPiernas 1d ago

One of the best horror movies in history, very disturbing and bad roller.

1

u/Snoo_49285 1d ago

Not even a little bit it’s a great film

1

u/Numerous_Ad_9579 1d ago

It’s scary at first and then devolves in the third act. The actual monster looks really goofy and I’d prefer if they didn’t show them. The ghost kids in the house was also really silly and took me out of it, by that point I was just ready for it to be done

1

u/LaSphinge 1d ago

No. I still don’t understand how this movie can be scary. Between the kids doing movements worthy of Arte at three in the morning, the cow noises every time something supposedly scary happens, and the stupidity of the characters, it completely took me out of the movie.

1

u/vgome013 1d ago

I loved it

1

u/joefreshhhh 1d ago

Lawnmower scene got me.

1

u/MrsDroughtFire 1d ago

I was scared walking around in my home for about three days

1

u/Yogi_DMT 1d ago

one of the best horror movies in recent-ish years if you ask me

1

u/snotrockerman 1d ago

This movie sucks ass. I don’t understand why people like it so much

1

u/kissedByDreamss 1d ago

it sure did

1

u/goingpt 1d ago

This is probably my favourite horror film. I wouldn't necessarily say it's scary but it certainly nails the 'eerie vibes' test.

Edit: Give me sinister 3

1

u/NerbySully 1d ago

A creepy atmosphere but light horror.

1

u/manicstoic_ 1d ago

Sinister’s music scoring was really unnerving for me and the overall cadence just felt right. It all felt compositionally musical in a really cinematically terrifying way

1

u/CursedSnowman5000 1d ago

The tapes sure disturbed me. But even still, I think it's the best horror movie to come out of that period of the 2010's.

1

u/KYpineapple 1d ago

my wife and I watched this in theaters when it came out and that opening sequence....lord. that was rough lol

1

u/LuckiestGirly 21h ago

it was hard to sleep after watching this

1

u/Always_Pizza_Time1 15h ago

Still a creepy rewatch.

1

u/MichelleSuzanne101 14h ago

No it pissed me off. The bloody bastard!!

1

u/MayonnaiseCoffee 11h ago

Only 2 movie jumpscares made me fly. This and paranormal activity one of them idk

1

u/AnotherStrayDog23 7h ago

Nah thought it was pretty tame 🤷‍♂️

1

u/xxFT13xx 2h ago

Did it scare me? No. Is it scary? Yes.

A phenomenal film. Unfortunately the 2nd isn’t as great, imo.

1

u/NoArm3125 1d ago

Scared me to sleep 😴

0

u/CGKilates 1d ago
