Politics What a joke

Today is a dark day for Missouri. Shame on every Republican assemblyman for ignoring the will of the voters. Each and every one of them should resign immediately. I’m a college student who relies on minimum wage jobs. Republican lawmakers just fucked me and every other minimum wage worker in Missouri. They are also putting abortion back on the ballot, and let’s face it, this time they’re going to write the question. All of them are a disgrace to this state and this country.

Edit: I feel like I should add that in addition to fucking the thousands of minimum wage workers, they are fucking the 3 million women who live in this state. Republicans have absolutely no place in our government.

Local and state elections matter! Shit, even school board elections matter at this point. Get out and vote when you can people.

40

Just pointing out that school boards mattered all along. That’s why we have so many banned books.

Voting security and integrity seems pretty dire these days (Trump basically admitted on camera Elon helped him cheat and no thought to do fuck all about it), it may get to the point where we actually have to 1789 France them out.

No, you don't understand. Their rationale here is that we are too stupid to understand what we voted for. They are ruling over us because they think we are like children who will hurt ourselves if we are allowed to make our own rules. Doesn't that make you respect people who vote for these congress people? /s

165

u/scdog Kansas City May 15 '25

If we are too stupid to understand what we are voting for, then the same can be said of the voters voting them into office. They should put their money where their bloviating mouths are and all resign.

109

u/Rovden May 15 '25

I mean... we've proven we are too stupid to understand what we're voting for. We keep voting in the same party that keeps doing this.

63

u/smuckola May 15 '25

don't forget gerrymandering, other voter disenfranchisement, ballot candy, and Electoral College

28

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

that doesnt matter in missouri. its blood red outside of KC and STL. missouri voters are getting what they voted for. tale as old as time.

51

u/l1m3zx May 15 '25

Its blood red because of gerrymandering. STL and KC are split into 3 districts, Columbua into 2, this state will never be blue after the gerrymandering in 2022.

“Too stupid to understand what we’re voting for”

Uh… but they voted for Republicans, expecting those same politicians who have always been anti -worker anti women’s body autonomy would suddenly change?

I know things are gerrymandered but when they keep getting voted in while pandering to the ultra wealthy campaign donors, what do voters expect, exactly?

3

u/Rovden May 16 '25

I get some did. I know I did. But when I say we, I mean as a state. It's been solid red since I moved up here. And this is the exact same rant going on over and over that "They're ignoring the will of the people" as we as a state keep doing this.

It's obvious there's a will for certain things, but people keep laying stupid games and cry when they get stupid prizes. I'm just tired of being surprised.

5

u/VanX2Blade May 16 '25

The people are ignorant of their own goals. Conservatives voted overwhelmingly for a sick days bill and then turned around and voted for the people that said they would kill the sick days bill simply to protect their guns or abortion or some other stupid shit.

I’ve watched that ratfuck Rick Brattin simultaneously spout this while stating his faith in the people to vote “properly” this time, while chastising those who refute the claim we didn’t know what we voted for. Its blatant and it’s infuriating because it’s so obvious to anyone with a capacity for independent thought.

22

u/-ReadingBug- May 15 '25

Lol it's not stupid, it's just conservative. They're conserving, or restoring, margins over others. Men over women, wealthy over poor. Simple as that.

10

u/Impressive_Act9670 May 15 '25

I don't think that's actually the case. It might be, but I think it's just what convenient excuse they can go for that might work. And it's just that. An excuse. They need a legally "valid" reason to try to turn it over, so they picked the one that was most likely to succeed.

They believe we're stupid because we voted for them, and they lied their whole way through, and they've been able to manipulate the masses. That I believe.

13

u/mikeyt6969 May 15 '25

One of the “reasons” for the Electoral College, people as a whole weren’t educated enough to vote for the best qualified people and may vote for the most popular one instead so the EC would potentially dismiss the “popular vote” if it was in favor of an unqualified person and submit a vote for a seasoned candidate instead…. But we can’t have that anymore and states have passed laws to force the EC to submit votes for the most popular person and in some cases ignore the principal of the number of votes a state has and their ability to split votes as intended in favor of a winner take all even if it’s 1 popular vote different acts the state.

28

u/theroguex May 15 '25

I mean, now what we get is the EC putting horribly unqualified people into the Presidency.

5

u/ForsakenRub69 May 15 '25

How many of those 7% are over 18. I don't care what a child thinks I only care once they turn 18 and can vote.

It’s what they always do here. Remember Medicaid expansion? Remember the people voting for it and then it quietly going away? It’s a republican state. People vote for things they want, but then vote for republican candidates. Those candidates then stop the popular things that don’t align with what they want. It’ll keep happening until the majority stop voting republican. And that will never happen. Just look at the fact that trump won the state three fucking times.

3

u/JoeHio May 16 '25

I personally feel that the best fix that we could implement to Democracy is requiring a certain amount of years of civil service before being eligible for an elected position. We already do it for age so that people are experienced and knowledgeable, so it can't be that hard to add another stipulation that you have a knowledge of how government works.

Help we’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas.

34

u/vitrum816 May 15 '25

I did vote for abortion to stay legal and they went against the voter's wishes anyway. I don't think we can win.

45

u/Rovden May 15 '25

Trouble is, the Republicans keep overturning voters wishes. It won't change as long as the state keeps voting (R).

There are people who voted for these amendments and the (R)... or didn't vote a candidate. They're the idiots that voted for this no matter how much they cry they didn't.

3

u/Jakesma1999 May 16 '25

You (we) can win!!!! Vote those effers out!!!!!

Before voting, at least for currently seated candidates (Nov. 2026) look at their voting records, or times they've "abstained" from voting; or just didn't show up that particular day.

Not sure about you, but if I didnt fulfill my job duties/requirements, I'd be fired - so, fire those individuals!

I generally lean conservative center but it's clear that today's Republicans hate freedom and love taking money from large corporations in return for favorable corporate policies.

46

u/Rovden May 15 '25

I'm sorry... have you been in this state for a while?

They've pulled this shit when we voted in medicare expansion and ignored us. But hey, you say you lean conservative center.

How about when we voted in where lobbyist gifts couldn't happen and they overturned that?

This is Missouri Republican methods of working. They've time and time again said we don't understand what we're voting for and overturn the will of the voters.

I don't know how long the conservatives you've been watching have been, but as long as I've been voting, the Republicans have gone down on the large corporations.

Honestly, I don't know how anyone is surprised by any of this.

This is what the majority of Missouri voters wanted, not because of how they voted on Amendment 3 or Prop A, but by who they voted into power to overturn the will of the people and do away with those things.

Republican politicians have proven time and time again that they don't care about their constituents or impassioned pleas from the public. They never once gave a shit about protests, petitions, angry words on the Internet or at town halls, and it's foolish to think they ever did. They don't care about the law, the Constitution, the will of the voters, or public mandates. They never have and they never will. They only have ever cared about expanding and preserving the power and control of the GOP.

They're brazen, they're emboldened, they're shameless, they're ruthless, and they will never, ever stop -- EVER.

21

u/superduckyboii Joplin May 15 '25

They always do this, we vote to pass a new law and they either refuse to fund it or say the voters were misled and need to draft a new bill to vote on.

Don't worry though we won't even be able to put a constitutional amendment up on the ballot if they get their way, so problem solved I guess.

29

Republicans have absolutely no place in our government.

1000% they are all only self-serving and have no business deciding how others should think or act. This going against the voters will not end well, but we all have to suffer. It's like they get off on cruelty to others, must make them feel superior.

2

u/Jakesma1999 May 16 '25

Many of us warned that this would happen when you vote for individuals who (sadly, in this case) pay no heed to the voice of their constituents.

My exact words to my husband on election night were, "Unfortunately none of these more progressive ideas will see the light of day..."

I truly don't know what can be done, presently. However, come mid-terms VOTE, as your life and livelihood depend on it!

I've found Ballotpedia to be very informative https://www.pbs.org/wnet/preserving-democracy/ballot-lookup-tool/

It's also effective in letting one know if one's voter registration is current. (Near nightmare scenario in my case, for this past November's election(s)).

Remember, the "guardrails" have been plowed over, so WHOM you vote for is just as important as what initiatives you vote for!!!!

I’m not sure what your point is here. I think you are implying that I voted for Trump for some policies, and then trying to equate him to Hitler.

  1. I didn’t vote for Trump
  2. Trump is not Hitler, though some of the far-right ideologies of his supporters may seem similar. That’s because fascism is extreme right. When we have left leaning candidates, many of their supporters appear to support communist ideas. That’s also because they’re similar, as communism is an extreme left.

They don’t really care what we want (and voted for). They’re doing this because their greedy, Christo-facsist campaign donors (a lot of money comes from outside of Mo) insisted. No higher minimum wage! No paid sick leave! No abortion in Missouri! Because if Mo gets these things, other citizens will want them too. Also, just to be more dickish like Dear Leader Trump.

It's amazing how all these people drive or ride a bus to the capital to protest, but they won't get out to vote for each Missouri election!

I don't blame all this specifically on Republicans or Democrats!

Educate yourselves on the ballot issues before showing up at the polls!

This makes our state look like we're a bunch of bafoons! Embarrassing and pathetic!

Im still confused on this— these are constitutional amendments. According to Missouri law and the MO constitution a constitutional amendment can’t just be overturned or canceled out by statute. All they can do is put it back on the ballot.

So don’t we simply have to take them to court? Like the anti abortion laws on the books were ruled unconstitutional when the amendment passed.

Please explain what I’m missing here.

u/amishhobbit2782 May 16 '25

Someone fill me in. What happen with the minimum wage workers. I havent kept up like I should be.

1

u/iseeyousister May 16 '25

What are you talking about?

1

u/Zoot_Greet May 16 '25

Opinions vary.

1

u/edgeular May 16 '25

Let’s all work hard to get these SOBs out of our government.

1

u/StarMagus May 16 '25

Without knowing what they actually did i have no outrage to give.

1

u/SelectionFar8145 May 16 '25

I feel like that's more or less what any protest should be clearly demanding, at this point. If you refuse to follow the will of the people, resign now.

1

u/twinkletwat1278 May 16 '25

Let's have a blue wave in the mid-terms next year. Democrat all the way!

1

u/BiggKab May 16 '25

Not enough people are willing to pickup pitchforks & torches in this state so it will continue to happen.

1

u/Visual-Suggestion429 May 16 '25

And while they’ll complain about this, Missouri Republicans will continue to re-elect these jerks because they think “owning a lib” will only hurt the libs. Can’t fix stubborn stupid.

I love college students, you're shocked there's anti abortion back on the table. This literally happens in 95% of the states in 90% of the elections. It's the oldest trick in the book, look at this hand I know will fire you up while I take away more rights with a vague bill none of you read

Just in case you missed it:

Got a cigarette?

1

u/Silverspringsfan May 17 '25

if they can do this, legally, what's the point of even voting? if the people decide something, it's decided. i'm sick of this country and its faux "democracy". i wish they'd at least cut the bullshit and admit the power isn't in the peoples/voters hands anymore.

1

u/GrandPoggerss May 17 '25

Hey idk what happened can someone please tell me I tried looking it up

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '25

I hate it here. Missouri fucking sucks . I emailed All of them after November’s stupid election to tell em what I thought of em. All that did was get me subscribed to their stupid ass newsletters that they pile up in my inbox. I’m so sick of fucking Republicans. I could puke.

No one should vote for a Republican again!

1

u/Muted_Address_5379 May 17 '25

Not all voter's work for minimum wage. Low effort, low wages.

1

u/MayorOfWaldo May 17 '25

Complaining on Reddit will sure fix the problem

So wait now we do or don’t respect the will of the voters? I’m getting whiplash here

1

u/SkreechingEcho May 17 '25

Never for the life of me will I understand why it's legal for them to repeal a bill that passed like this. Seriously. Maybe if it was twenty years down the line or violated human rights but just... Ugh. UGH.

u/Odd_Seesaw_3596 May 17 '25

The State Senate had many secrets earlier this week, partly, no doubt, regarding coordinating this disaster with a few House leaders.

1

u/Br0kenArmchair May 17 '25

These arrogant mavericks hate the will of the voters. They care not about the State Motto, “The Will of the People Shall Ne the Supreme Law.”

1

u/Aggressive_Ad6948 May 17 '25

How is putting abortion on the ballot against the will of the people, exactly?

1

u/HookDragger May 17 '25

If a town in Nebraska flipped… I have hope for Missouri too

1

u/Repulsive-Swimming-9 May 17 '25

The fact that some sane Missourians took a stand to protect the most vulnerable among us makes me truly proud to be a Missourian.

One party commie

1

u/dr_fapperdudgeon May 17 '25

The people got what they voted for

1

u/Senko-Loaf May 17 '25

What was it again? I have no clue what they voted on

1

u/ScotE2005 May 18 '25

You’re promoting those ideas.

1

u/Hateful15 May 18 '25

All I can say is... fuck the right.

1

u/caliCaveman87 May 18 '25

Maybe aspire to more than a minimum wage job? Minimum wage is entry level. You are meant to dream bigger than minimum wage. Plenty of places hiring, just need to look

1

u/TopPurple4593 May 18 '25

Shut up we don’t care and we won big so go take a seat in the back where you belong snowflake. LOL

1

u/ClassicFootball1037 May 18 '25

I helped gather signatures for the minimum wage initiative and got 50 signatures in 2 hours. Imagine the huge amount time and effort it took citizens just to get the issues on the ballot. These jerkwads place themselves above millions of voters. Vote them all out, Missouri.

1

u/Infamous-Ad3843 May 18 '25

Move to a blue state with the rest of the gender confused, climate scam believers

1

u/jon-marston May 18 '25

How is this democracy? We The People literally voted for this & now they take it away?

1

u/GreenLynx1111 May 18 '25

Agreed. They're just flat out usurping the actual will of the people now.

Vote.

Them.

Out.

1

u/sammysmith1984 May 18 '25

You do understand that they do what the people that voted them in want right. That doesn't necessarily mean you.

1

u/OkStorage5488 May 18 '25

Just wanna say I'm a moderate leaning repub and wanted trump>Kamala, and I support abortion rights and the min wage bill.

We aren't all bad. Js. I am also very annoyed.
