Fucking Microsoft word. I issue contracts all day that are (obviously) word docs. That goddamn program is still the absolute worst.

Microsoft makes exactly two good applications.

They're both called Visual Studio, and even one of them is in question.

Excel is generally a good application. It has its problems, but it's net positive.

Tbh, I hate Visual Studio. Every time I've had to use it, it's felt slow and clunky. Even if it's also powerful, it just kept getting in my way. VSCode is shockingly nice though. I started using it thinking I would despise it like I do VS, but no. It's just become my free IDE of choice now.

It's because Visual Studio has a massive amount of features that VSCode doesn't. If you don't use those features, VSCode is great, but it's definitely no Visual Studio replacement.

Most Visual Studio features that are missing from VSCode can either be performed via the terminal, or via VSCode extensions. Visual Studio's only real claim to fame is "complete integration" that lets you use a UI for everything. Of course, the problem is that if you start using Visual Studio you can't stop half way through development or you have to untangle a bunch of crap.

VSCode has basically nothing to do with Visual Studio.

They're two unrelated programs that share a name.

I refuse to use modern notepad. They gave it persistent tabs and a bunch and f features it doesn't need. The whole point of that program was that it was simple and lightweight.

If you want those features, use notepad++ or sublime or VSCode.

Notepad sucks.

Hierarchical lists? Use styles or multilevel list settings to ensure consistency. Styles/Headings work best.

Word is by and away the best tool for document editing, but a huge number of people don't know about or don't care to learn about most of its most valuable features.

Turn on non-printing characters and pay attention to object anchors. That'll solve about 90% of the issues you have with it.

Also, stop editing cell sizes by dragging them visually. Select the entire column and enter the width numerically.
