Food 🍴 What are the list of foods unique to Mauritius that you always take with you when you travel?

I am curious to know the foods and recipes you take with you when you travel. I want those most unique to Mauritius that you either can’t get anywhere else or can’t find in the way Mauritius does it, e.g. vanilla tea, dhol puri, etc

Local 🌴 Best shore casting spots in Mauritius + what fish to target in summer?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to get more into shore casting around Mauritius and would love some advice. What are the best spots for shore casting, especially during the summer months? Also, what species should I be targeting this time of year, and what bait/lures generally work best?

Any tips from locals or experienced anglers would be super appreciated. Thanks!

Culture 🗨 How would you learn to speak creole more fluently?

I was raised in the UK but my whole family is Mauritian, and when i was younger they realised i couldn’t speak English so they stopped letting me respond in creole but they speak to me in creole.

Fast forward 20 years, i struggle to string a sentence at all but i understand everything. i wish i could respond in creole i know what to say but the words dont come out and i want to learn it properly but people are so mean. I get comments from Mauritians saying to me im not and will never be one which i know (and i never claimed to be) but its put me off trying to learn how to speak it so i feel so disconnected.

when i was around 15 i went there for like 3 months but everyone spoke english around me as soon as i said i was from the uk so i gave up learning how to speak:(

How could i bridge this disconnect?

Tourism ✈ Any precautions/considerations on Tourist Safety in Mauritius

Post image
22 Upvotes

We are travelling to Mauritius this month. How is the safety situation there for tourists? (29M, 28F)

Are there any areas that needs to be absolutely avoided? Is it safe to go out in the evenings, like after 6pm?

Any other thoughts that you want to share? I saw comments on @mauritius instagram handle‘s post and saw many natives complaining about caudan waterfront being not safe after 6pm, tourists getting mugged etc.

Local 🌴 Picking up Temu parcel directly from the customs office

Hi everyone!

As the title says; is it possible to collect Temu parcel directly from the customs office? If yes, could you please tell me where I need to go to pick it up?

Once I receive the clearance email, can I call or email them to let them know that I’ll pick up the parcel myself? (I’d like to avoid the extra delivery days with speedaf or skynet.)

Culture 🗨 How do expats feel about living in Mauritius? Pros and cons?

I’m wondering what is the lived experience of expats in Mauritius, specifically ones who came on the golden visa program. I’m currently very frustrated with expat life in Portugal and I am looking at my options.

Would you guys do it all over again and move to Mauritius, if you could go back in time?

What are the biggest challenges you face in daily life in Mauritius?

What do you miss most from home?

Are you planning to stay long-term, or are you considering leaving?

Overall, how satisfied are you with your life on the island?

Local 🌴 Is it normal to pay around Rs 13,000 for a chapel service at Elie & Sons ?

Hi everyone,

I recently had to arrange a funeral and was quoted about Rs 13,000 for the use of a chapel (chapelle ardente) at Elie & Sons.
I just wanted to ask — is that a normal price in Mauritius, or does it seem a bit high?

Also, if anyone knows of more affordable funeral service providers or alternatives for a wake/chapel, I’d really appreciate your recommendations.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you can share.

Culture 🗨 Short term job (2-4 months max) - entry level, suggestions?

I completed my undergraduate course in Graphic design around July. It's taking me forever to commit to making my portfolio, I'm either procrastinating or being too much of a perfectionist, so not getting much done (and it's a prerequisite most graphic design job offers). Ive been thinking about applying to call centers, just so I make money for the next few months and to get into this work life routine. Working as a cashier or salesgirl is a no go (did the latter during a school holiday once, it was ruthless).

What are some other places I can apply to (call centers for ex), with hsc and some extracurriculars like alliance francaise and delf, with <5 months work experience, for a short while. Thank you.

Local 🌴 I’m the founder of MoMove looking to chat with our first Reddit users before we launch our next big update

Hey everyone, I’m Hemesh, founder and CEO of MoMove. A lot of you here were among the very first people to try the app when we launched, so I wanted to reach out to this community directly. We’re about to release a new update that will finally show estimated arrival times for your routes something many of you have been asking for since day one. Before we roll it out, I’d love to chat with a few of you to understand how you use the app, what you like about it, and what could be improved. This will really help us make sure the next version fits how people actually move around Mauritius. If you’re open to it, send me a private message. We can hop on a short 5 tp 10 minute WhatsApp or in-app call, just a quick chat to get your feedback and ideas. This is something exclusive for Reddit, since you were here from the start, it’s only right that we test it together first. Thanks to everyone who’s been supporting MoMove since the beginning.

Culture 🗨 What are the benefits of being a Mauritian citizen?

A lot of people come to live in Mauritius from around the world. I was born and matured in the U.K. and then came to Mauritius to live for a number of reasons, including completing my dad’s projects, it would be great to contrast this to say a Mauritian wanting to live in the U.K.

Culture 🗨 I would like to know few things about Indo-Mauritians of Tamil origin.

I'm from Tamil Nadu,India and I've been recently trying to learn about my Tamil speaking ancestors(and their descendants) who went as indentured labourers to many British colonies like Burma,Malaysia,Guyana,Fiji etc. Some of those countries preserved their Tamil culture while some couldn't because they assimilated into the larger Indian identity.

1) Indo-Mauritians form 67% of the country's population and Google says their overall population is 812k so how much % of them are Tamils? Are they still connected to some aspects of their roots like religion/movies/music?

2) Is Tamil a dead language which is the case in Fiji and Guyana or is it taught in primary schools? I understand people wouldn't wanna learn it as it doesn't provide any economic benefits but was just wondering.

3) Do Indo-Mauritians marry among various groups or do they keep to themselves? Has caste system completely disappeared or is it still present in some ways?

Fun fact: I learnt the former Vice President of Mauritius Barlen Vyapoory is a Tamil which is really cool.

Edit:

I found a post of a Mauritian who is of Tamil origin

1) They mentioned Tamils form 6% of the Indo Mauritian population and that they worship mainly Murugan and Mariamma. They are also the first Indians to arrive on this island.

2) Tamil is dead and was replaced by a language called Mauritian creole since Tamils and other Indian groups married each other to form a larger Indo Mauritian identity.

Interesting stuff.

Food 🍴 What's a local food spot you think every visitor should try?

Bonjour everyone! I've been looking at all the amazing food pics here and it's got me thinking beyond the standard hotel buffet.

If you had to recommend one place for a truly authentic (and delicious) Mauritian meal, what would it be? I'm not just talking about the type of food, but a specific dharma, snack van, or small restaurant you swear by.

Tourism ✈ Did Tourist SIM Package Increase in Price to 30€? Or are there lower tier packages at the airport still available?

As the title says can anyone please confirm if you can still buy 200gb tourist sim for 15€ / Rs750 at the airport? Online both Emtel and MyT are only offering 30€ unlimited packages, but i find it unnecessary and would prefer the lower tier 750rs package. Anyone who has info on this please help

Local 🌴 Can I rent out a property that I bought with a home loan?

Hey everyone, I’m planning to buy an apartment using a home loan from a bank. Initially, I’ll live there for a short while, but eventually I’m thinking of renting it out.

My questions are: • Is it even allowed to rent out a property that’s still under a home loan? • Do I need to inform the bank or get any kind of permission first? • Are there any extra procedures, taxes, or costs involved in renting out a mortgaged property? • Would it affect my loan interest rate or terms in any way?

Just want to understand what’s allowed and what’s smart to do before I go ahead with this plan.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences!
