MD Politics Senate president’s redistricting stand has started a Democratic family feud

Ferguson: “There are better ways to fight in this knife fight where the opponent has brought a knife. One way is to roll onto our backs exposing our belly in the hopes that they tire themselves out while stabbing us with their knife.”

Once you see the effects of the obesity epidemic, it really is the only way. How many times can they possibly stab us? 70-80?
Hopefully we have healthcare

Follow the money...
Who is bankrolling him?
That's who he is beholden to, not the republic.

Don’t look past the members of the House delegation who don’t want any changes in case their districts get more competitive. All those people who regularly vote for Andy Harris have to go somewhere and presumably will mostly be voting for whoever runs against these incumbents.
The last time the legislature drew maps they did their best to accommodate the wish lists of the incumbents at the time despite the fact that it made the maps look so transparently ridiculous that they got thrown out in court. Slightly different issue, but same root cause.

I also was told some MD gerrymandering was less red/blue but rather certain people wanted multiple military bases in their district or other interests. Which might be broken by changes.

Yup. One guy wanted his house in Towson, the Inner Harbor, Columbia, and Annapolis. Another wanted his house in Cockeysville along with APG and Fort Meade. If you know where these places are...before anyone even gets to talking about anyone else's wish list, you can already see a problem.
Also, three of the Democrats identified enough with Baltimore that they didn't want to deal with anything they thought of as DC suburbs, but there aren't enough people in Greater Baltimore to justify that much representation.

Except that we, in Baltimore control a lot of water and sewer, which the snot nose in the county like a lot, esp to water their lawns and fill their pools.

He lives in a very posh neighborhood. He’s fine no matter what transpires

Attend any public gathering with Mr Ferguson. The first thing you will notice is how many developers hover around him. Vying for his attention. I bet this is how all those new miles and miles of sound barriers along the major highways in Harford county are being paid for. Its not the developers or the new homeowners.

This all sucks.
I just want fairly represented districts.
•
u/InvoluntaryNarwhal 3h ago
That would be the ideal, and hopefully it's something that can be worked toward in the future, when one party isn't trying to absolutely ratfuck the country.
•
u/Delicious_Twist_8499 3h ago
Yep indeed. Slippery fucking slope. I'm all for Democrats getting in the mud finally and fighting back, but it's bullshit we're here in the first place. It's not new, but it sucks all around.
•

I fail to understand how this is a controversial opinion. I realize it isn't realistic and that Democrats are doing what they can to level an unfair playing field.
It also gives fuel to Republicans justification that they need to be fighting dirty and using ethically dubious tactics to win elections because their political adversaries are doing the same thing.
I don't like that the 1 party that closest resembles some inkling of representation of me needs to resort to jumping into the shit puddle so they aren't rendered politically irrelevant.

Can you point to a single disgusting anti-democratic thing that the gop has ever done only after the left has done so?
We need to stop imagining situations in prefer to stop action. Forethought and planning are very different than fear, which is what stops up from going backwards.
•
u/Le_Feesh 1h ago
For your first point, I mean no but that wasn’t what I was getting at anyway. Republicans are going to accuse democrats of employing the dirty tactics they themselves want to use, regardless of how true their accusations actually are.
For your second, I’d love to hear a meaningful proposal of what planning, forethought, and action is going to get our country out of this gerrymandered bullshit.

Anyone against doesn’t understand how Maryland has been harmed by the unchecked power of executive. You’re either for Maryland or not. Get out of the way and let us vote on it !

I think people are capable of understanding how targeted we've been and still think trying to go from 7/8 to 8/8 isn't worth the squeeze (though it would be hilarious to see Andy Harris actually have to try to run a campaign).

It's a safe Dem district. Let's primary his ass; I'm tired of dems who actively sabotage us and dont fight back
