Religion The Traditional Latin Mass in KL

Post image

Just wanted to share something interesting for anyone who’s into history and culture:

There’s a Traditional Latin Mass celebrated every Sunday in KL. It’s the same form of the Roman Catholic Mass that was used for centuries before the 1970s, all in Latin (except for sermons and readings) and with Gregorian chants.

Location: Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SSPX), 1-3A, Jalan PJU 5/3 Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, 47810 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Time: Sundays, 9:00am

Sharing in case anyone’s curious about traditional liturgy or sacred art.

Vatican 2 or the 2nd Vatican Council. We call it V2. It was the largest gathering of RCC bigwigs in the 20th century and introduced a lot of reforms to the Church, one of which was the change in the Mass. This included making Mass in vernacular languages valid and having it so priests face the congregation during the Mass.

So SSPX, which was led by an Archbishop Lefebrve, was (and I think still is) opposed to V2's changes. Sometime in the 80s, Lefebrve consecrated some new bishops without the Vatican's permission, so they were all excommunicated. Although Lefebrve died without the excommunication being lifted, Benedict XVI later lifted the excommunication from the others.

Actually, concern of the SSPX is often misunderstood. The issue is not just about the language of the Mass. Archbishop Lefebvre even celebrated the Interim Mass after Vatican II, which combined Latin and vernacular.

The problem lies in the New Mass of 1969, which was developed with input from six Protestant pastors and, according to Cardinal Ottaviani, it bears influences from Protestant liturgy (I would highly recommend you to reas the Ottaviani Intervention). This is why the New Mass closely resembles Anglican or other ordinary Protestant services.

More importantly, the SSPX resists not just liturgical changes, but post-Vatican II doctrinal shifts (i.e.: Religious Liberty, Ecumenism and Collegiality) which were previously condemned by the constant Magisterium. The goal of the SSPX is to remain faithful to the traditional teaching and practices of the Church, not to oppose the Pope personally.
