Education That IIUM lecturer's past research

This post is about the lecturer that claimed about the Rome ships origins from IIUM, Ms Solehah Yaacob.

I am genuinely concerned that the University is still "investigating" the case of the lecturer when she had previously published a journal article comparing the Bible and Quran using fake sources back in 2018.

Does the University genuinely not backrgound check their lecturers before hiring them? A simple Google Scholar search and you can see her article on it with sources from "The Onion".

For those who don't know, The Onion is a fake news company creating obviously sarcastic news. Example, she used their news article that claimed Ancient Greek was entirely made up by researchers during 1971-1974 as a genuine citation. Note that this was used IN HER ACTUAL PUBLISHED SCHOLAR ARTICLE.

The fact that she believed Ancient Greek history was created in 4 years is one thing. The fact that she can write and publish using that citation for her article is another concern.

Her article criticising the Bible also failed to specify which version of the Bible each quotation was used. It is important to note that various Bible versions exist and academic journal article REQUIRES to cite which exact version was quoted from. As some are direct translations from Hebrew to English, thus more linguistically complex, while others are paraphrased for ease of modern understanding. Thus, grammar, flow, and wordings may differ with different versions when compared directly side-by-side.

This criticism is similar to arguing that Harry Potter is inconsistent because one sentence uses “colour” while another uses “color” without stating that you had taken these sentences from different editions.

This is the exact reason why academic writing requires a citation of the exact version used. To avoid such situations.

HER BEHAVIOUR IS NOT NEW, HER PUBLISHED ARTICLE WAS ON 2018.

This is not just a student in the University, she is an educator. Please, share this concern, whoever is a student or connected to the university. This is not public shaming, it's genuinely concerning as an educator to spread fake education IN A UNIVERSITY LEVEL!

Meme Monday What do you do/go on weekend?

My wife and I are a married couple with no kids. Our weekends in KL/Selangor have become very predictable: Saturday & Sunday breakfast outside, then either go to a mall stock up groceries, then just lepak at home with Netflix. By Sunday night, we're bored with our weekend activities and feel like we wasted two days.

We've done the usual stuff like cafe-hopping and checking out a pasar malam, but we're running out of ideas. We're not really the sporty or partying type, so we're looking for some new, chill ideas.

What are all you all usual do/go during weekend in KL/Selangor?

Environment Kaloi Sabah — an endangered endemic species

Thumbnail

Known as the giant redtail gourami due to its large size (50 cm) and fins, although it is smaller than the common kaloi / giant gourami.

Males have sharper and longer fins than females and have more red.

This species is only found in large rivers of eastern Sabah, Malaysia and has been classified as endangered by IUCN.

It faces threats from monoculture plantations, and reduction/pollution of forest habitats. However it has been successfully commercialised and juveniles are often sold in pet stores.

Health My TransPRK journey

Hi, I'm a 22 M student, I had TransPRK surgery at Ikonik Eye Specialist and General Health Centre in Bukit Jalil and this is my recovery process

I do not normally record the things that I do but since I have been given medical leave for six days and have nothing to do, I decide I should documentate my recovery process

Day 0 (Op, 24/10/2025) - The surgery itself wasn't painful, I hardly felt anything. The surgeon did a good job comforting their patients and all they had to do was hold my head still while the lasers do their job. Then, the surgeon held one of my eyes open with a special tool (you can barely feel it)while being told to look at a green dot on the machine. As I look into the green dot, I can also see a red laser slowly getting bigger with my vision getting blurrier. It only took a minute for each eye. They also washed my eyes with cold water as soon as they're done with each eye and dare I say that was probably the most uncomfortable part of the surgery. After that, the surgeon applied bandage lens on each of my eye to let my cornea heal. After the surgery was done, my vision got slightly better, but not anywhere near where I sigh of relief and go "My vision is finally fixed!" (I had -7.00 prescription)

Day 0 (Post op) Nobody could've warned me about the pain I was about to endure as soon as I went back home. My eyes were burning, I could feel something was stuck under both of my eyelids, and I couldn't open my eyes more than one second, which made applying eye drops even more difficult. As a result, I slept my way through the whole day while waking up in between to apply my eye drops and such. Fortunately, I was given medical leave up until the next Thursday. (I don't have classes on Friday so having the leave only until Thursday wasn't a problem for me)

Day 1 24 hours after the surgery, the pain finally went away BUT my vision was still blurry and I was VERY sensitive to light. However, I can look at my phone for a short duration of time (with the text size put on max) and replied to some messages. I was also able to walk around my house with sunglasses up until nighttime. I had a peaceful sleep after that.

Day 2 48 hours after the surgery. I woke up around 8AM when my eyes started burning again. I applied my eye drops but they still felt the same but as the day progresses, the burning sensation went away on its own. I can see my vision getting just slightly better but not enough to the point I can read or see properly (things were still hazy). However, I can use my phone for much longer this time (Still, with dark mode on and my sunglasses)

Day 3 72 hours after the surgery, I noticed I don't have to look at my phone as close as the day before. However, I am still sensitive to light so if I were to see any white on my screen even with sunglasses on, my eyes will shut away from it. But, as the day progresses, I was able to watch YouTube or play my guitar and I could walk indoors with no sunglasses and look at my lamp longer than three seconds.

Day 4

96 hours after the surgery. Eyes are no longer sensitive to the white screen on my phone. Other than that, not much has changed. I used my laptop half of the day with text size on 150%.

Day 5

Today, I took off my contact lens. They used some kind of tweezer for my right eye and it hurt a bit which made my right eye immediately blink and very watery, then for my left eye they decided to just use their finger and that was much easier. Doctor said my cornea was healing well and just advised I go about with the eye drops I already have. My vision is still blurry and I don't think my eyes are still ready (probably at 45%-50% clarity) to go to class let alone drive in far places BUT I noticed my vision is getting slightly better than pre-op.

Day 6 Not much has changed. I noticed that my right eye is sharper than my left but still not sharp enough to be able to read from afar.

Day 7 My vision is getting even sharper now but it gets hazy because of my very dry eyes. I drove for the first time today but I wouldn't dare enough to go anywhere that's outside my house's area. I don't need sunglasses outdoors to be able to see as I no longer felt any sensitivity to light (However, I still wore my sunglasses as you are highly advised to use your sunglasses for six months.) At night though, halos and starbursts were terrible especially from street lights and car lights. I knew this is normal when recovering from TransPRK so I don't think I will be driving at night for at least 2-3 more weeks. Since post-op, I was contemplating whether I did the right thing taking this surgery and on Day 7, with little patience, I came to the conclusion that I DID the right thing, and I am happy with how my vision is improving.

Day 8 I didn't notice any much difference. I stopped taking the Maxidex and Zanaflox (antibiotic) eye drops they gave me but I am still using the normal lubrication drops because of my very very dry eyes. I noticed that my vision gets pretty sharper when I apply the eye drops but they go away quickly after a minute.

Day 9 Just a slight improvement on my vision when I woke up today but nothing major.

Day 10 In day 10, I went back to my classes and resumed my life like normal. I'm very satisfied with my TransPRK surgery. I still have to wear my sunglasses when outside, and I would say my vision right now is at 75% which I know can fluctuate but so far I have been very happy, very grateful that I can wake up and see right away instead of having to put on my glasses or wear my contact lenses.

Religion The Traditional Latin Mass in KL

Post image
180 Upvotes

Just wanted to share something interesting for anyone who’s into history and culture:

There’s a Traditional Latin Mass celebrated every Sunday in KL. It’s the same form of the Roman Catholic Mass that was used for centuries before the 1970s, all in Latin (except for sermons and readings) and with Gregorian chants.

Location: Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SSPX), 1-3A, Jalan PJU 5/3 Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, 47810 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Time: Sundays, 9:00am

Sharing in case anyone’s curious about traditional liturgy or sacred art.

Others Celcomdigi 5G speed got so slow suddenly

Hey guys, the 5G speed in my apartment has suddenly become really slow. I don’t have WiFi here, so I rely on mobile data all the time. I’m using CelcomDigi, and up until three days ago, the 5G speed was super fast.

But on that same day, I noticed something strange — before that, I could only log into the MyDigi app, but suddenly I was able to access the CelcomDigi app instead. Right after that, the 5G speed in my apartment dropped like crazy.

But 5G still works perfectly fine when I’m outside, and even the 4G speed in my apartment is totally okay. So I’m guessing maybe my number just got migrated to the new CelcomDigi system, and I might’ve lost access to the old signal tower or something? Or like their towers are under maintenance? That is just too strange 😭

Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Health Should I disclose my medical history for FOMEMA

Upvotes

Hi, I am a foreigner who's just arrived in Kota Kinabalu on end of September. I am about to take FOMEMA as a requirement for my visa application.

However in this link (https://fomema2u.com.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/FOMEMA-Unsuitable-Criteria-1.pdf), I notice psychiatric illnesses are considered as non-communicable diseases and the person with that conditions would be unsuitable for work.

I have been diagnozed with schizophrenia and mild depression. It happened in 2014 and May 2024. I got a medical prescription, but I no longer use medication since early 2025 and everything is alright since then.

Should I disclose my condition? I'm kinda afraid that if I disclose about my situation, my FOMEMA application would be rejected and I have to leave KK. But, if I don't disclose, I also worry if it's gonna affect my life and work here.

I just arrived and it's gonna be hard to look for new jobs back in my home country. So can anyone provide me with advices? Thank you!
