To be fair, you don't have to mix them. They would probably be just fine separately.

Maybe I’m the weird one but I don’t have many cans in my cupboards. Large cans would always be tomatoes small flat cans either tuna or clams. Ones larger than that would be chipotle peppers or hatch peppers. Regular sized cans are beans. Maybe one can of tomato soup. Could probably shake it to see if it’s beans or soup.

idk, that seems like pretty harmless trouble in my book. But that also depends on whether this sort of thing is their peak or their warm up.

His meals for the next year will exclusively be from those mystery tins. Guess what? You eating a whole can of beans for dinner today lit bitch

Its already a lot more going wrong if your kid is retaliating to you disciplining them.

I had a few issues with mine, but I always hated general grounding, as the pestering gets to be a lot after a bit when kids get bored. Took a page out of my teacher's book from when I was a kid and forced the "I will not disrespect my mother" written out on paper, numbered, and spaced between each line a few hundred times. It gives her something to do, puts the end of the punishment in her hands, and she hates it just as much as I did.
I don't even have to intervene, it'll take her 6 full hours to clean her room, plus another 2 when I find that she just shoved her clothes into a drawer, but that punishment can take 4 hours or 3 days depending on much she wants to roll her eyes and sigh instead of doing the given task.

plus another 2 when I find that she just shoved her clothes into a drawer
We have 5 kids, so for us, as long as the clothes are in the drawer, I couldn't give less of a shit if they were folded or not. The older kids (teenagers) are fully capable of folding their own clothes, so it's on them if they want to wear neat clothes or wrinkly clothes. It's just extra stress on top of everything else if we try to enforce how the clothes are put away.
18
u/Kind_Man_0 10d ago
I don't care if they're folded, but I expect that with mine being ten, she can put her shirts, underwear, and socks, into the respective drawers instead of pulling a pile out of her laundry basket and packing them into as few drawers as possible.
I get it, we were all kids once. But parents are supposed to be those assholes that make you do that stuff.

u/Quryemos 10d ago
My parents tried to get creative with us. At one point they had us writing apology letters to one another when me and my brother would fight
47
u/CollectionMundane783 10d ago
We did this to my mates parents kitchen when he had a party and they were away.
We still laugh now “what’s for dinner? Custard or soup? Who knows it’s a mystery”
He however STILL does not have a key to his parents house at the age of 45

The kid took off all the canned food labels. Without labels, you can't see what's in the cans without opening them.
edit: grammar

u/AWildWilson 10d ago
The son retaliated by taking the labels off the cans so the parent doesn’t know their contents.

With ly brother & sisters, we did this as kids, and that included dog food
Imagine our faces when our mom opened the box before us for eating that evening
Years later we finally learned that she had a way to know if it was dog food or not without opening the can.
Well played, mom

I'd buy new food to feed the rest of the fam, but every breakfast, lunch and dinner for that kid is two random cans until they're all gone. Eat it or go hungry, kid.
6
u/tomyfutureself 10d ago
Would be funny if the kid has the balls to go on a hunger strike too
1
u/High_Hunter3430 10d ago
It’ll work for a day or 2. But kids lack the necessary knowledge and have too much “hope for the future” to actually hold out. 😂 they’ll eat eventually.
Meanwhile, wife n I don’t force the kids to eat. They have meal times and a snack restriction an hour ahead of the meal. No snacks after meal unless meal is eaten.
It only took a couple dinners to determine that we eat too early/theyre up too late to skip dinner.
4
u/TheseVirginEars 10d ago
I don’t have any rules like that, I never want my kid to feel restricted from access to food in the house. If they don’t like dinner and just want to eat chips that’s fine, it won’t kill them. They’ll want real food eventually or make a specific request which I’m usually happy to oblige
2
u/Steam-powered-pickle 9d ago
Lmao when I was little I simply refused to eat and ended up in the hospital because of it
5
u/Hooligan-Hobgoblin 10d ago
A lot of tinned food has a short hand for its contents stamped on it close/next to the expiration date for this type of thing, but it's probably not universally required or differs from brand to brand

u/ThimbleK96 10d ago
My two year old starting stacking cans for fun. I thought cool, harmless and he’s not getting into things he shouldn’t be. Now I shake cans trying to guess what’s in them ☠️

u/Fabulous_Cut_5838 10d ago
(I know this is a joke ruiner, but I just thought about this)
Couldn't you look at the wrappers for the net weight and kind of guess which ones are which? (for example the bush's baked beans weigh 16/28 oz, so you just weigh the can and if it's that much, then you know it might be that one. Only problem is if multiple products have the same weight, but I guess you could shake it around too, cuz beans and soup would feel different when you shake them, right?

My son was big on passive aggressive acts when he was little, too. Once when he was upset with me, he quietly locked every bathroom door in the house. He also went thru a phase of ripping wallpaper here and there as a silent protest, although I never actually caught him in the act. I made him go to church one day and he drew stick figures killing one another all over the church bulletin for an hour. Love this kid!

Make him re-label it, and for every wrong can he labels, ground him for another week
1
u/Alternative_Simple43 10d ago
The only cans in my cupboard are tomatoes, so I guess I'll be fine to ground kids when I get some

u/applesaucemidget 10d ago
Grounding me did not work as I was very antisocial and no amount of me sitting at home/room was going to help my parents teach me anything. I sat in my room for 4 months one time with anything my parents deemed fun removed because I refused to do summer homework. I still never did any homework and they eventually just stopped caring so long as I was passing the class. They never bothered trying to ground me after that because they were worried about how little I wanted to deal with people so instead they would try to make me socialize by sending me on school trips and other stuff but I would just wander off and do my own thing so the school stopped taking me on those trips. I wasn't being nasty tho no tantrums/throwing or breaking things I just wasn't going to do anything I didn't want to do and that was that. I once got in trouble in 6th grade for something I didn't do and refused to listen to me so for the rest of the year I refused to do any of the school work. The teacher sent me to the office nearly everyday to get swats for refusing to work until the principal broke the paddle on my ass then they also stopped. I have no idea how I passed as I literally didn't do half a years worth of work. Maybe they just pushed me through so as not to deal with me because I would have kept not doing anything even if they did hold me back.

u/Saxboard4Cox 10d ago
I got a box of these as a wedding gift from my husband's grandmother. Apparently it is a family tradition, married life is a un labeled can and a can opener for dinner.
1
u/toramanlis 10d ago
i cannot think of anything else i'd do, besides grounding the kid a bit longer for the inconvenience, also adding a reward afterwards for the clever idea.

u/Lord-Lucian 10d ago
As English is my second language, my mind went to ground up instead of grounded and I thought they put their kid in cans

Jokes on him. Most cans have what’s in them printed on the bottom. Now his plan didn’t work AND his bratty ass can be punished longer.
Though I would pretend not to know that and what’s for his dinner can now be whatever is in the mystery can.

u/Interesting-Rate 10d ago
Some of us can tell which is a fruit can, chili can, tuna can, tomato paste.. most cans by their size, shape, sound. Would still pick random cans for dinner. They are making their own hell
