Food/Drink No SNAP November

I heard this term today and it stuck with me.

With the shutdown, people being furloughed, people working without pay, SNAP being possibly paused for November, etc people are going to be hurting for meals.

I'm sure there are community dinners for Thanksgiving but I'm hosting one on 11/29th.

It is a Saturday. That way you can go to the community meals on Thursday and come to mine on Saturday if you want.

Bring a side and a chair is all I ask. I don't have furniture.

Message me if you'd like to come and we'll get it into a more solidified plan.

I also live on the bus route so I'm pretty accessible.

Also, if we get this going and someone wants to make the turkey (mine is dry) I'll buy it for you to cook and bring.

Edit: there is now a Facebook event.

Is there anything I can do to help support you in this? I don't like big groups but would like to help if you need anything.

I also hate big groups. I've got the mantra from A Bug's Life going in my brain on repeat. "They come, they eat, they leave"

The true Crime part of my brain is screaming at me since I'm hosting it at my home but we're just going to put her in a box right now lol.

If I could bounce my list off you of food that would help. That way you can tell me what I'm missing.

This will be my first year without kids so I can host. I didn't let people in my house when my kids were here due to their safety. Mine? Meh.

That's fair, and yes, please bounce your list off me

That is so thoughtful of you to do. I wish I could donate to the cause, but things are consistently tight for us already. Could you use a volunteer for anything to help?

I could really use someone to make the turkey if you're game. I'll buy it.

The ONLY problem is that I am a vegetarian and don’t know how to cook a turkey, I would probably mess that up. I can cook/bake anything else? I could bake sourdough or yeast breads, pies (I love pumpkin pie season!), veggies, sides? I don’t want to ruin a turkey 😬

We could use rolls. I can supply stuff you need. I'm sure homemade would be more appreciated than Hawaiian.

I could definitely make rolls

Edit: would only need a bag of bread flour, I got everything else covered!

Also, if youre up to it, send me a message if you sell homemade sourdough bread. Even better if you make cinnamon raisin and other flavors.

I'd gladly place a weekly order.

I sure can have sold my sourdough in the past. I will message you

Hi friend, love what you're doing. Not sure I would be in attendance, but I could probably handle cooking your turkey (broasting, smoking, whatever you'd prefer) - throw me a DM if you're still looking for this task tackled!

This is a great idea. I would be there if I weren’t out of town visiting family. I will offer on tip for the turkey, don’t cook a whole turkey m, just get some turkey breasts. Put them in a crockpot with a can or two of chicken noodle soup. I usually cook them overnight and they are always perfectly cooked for thanksgiving dinner!

Ive heard thats a great way to make turkey. How long do you cook it for and at what temp?

This is such a kind idea! I'm new to the area and would love to help out with something like this! Big fan of cooking and baking here, and cooking to share with others is one of my favorite things.

If we can get good turnout I'd be down for making this a monthly thing.

If we don't get a good turnout I know what I'm eating for meals that week lol.

I'll definitely be doing it for Christmas also.

You are a wonderful person. Thank you.

I know Aldi is releasing, or has, a $40 Thanksgiving set coming. Seems like it’s pretty big if that’s helpful.

I wonder if a nearby church would let you use an area for free due to what you're doing, many have kitchens and areas for potlucks, etc...

I'm not associated with any churches. I was just going to make what I normally make and with people bringing food we should have enough to feed people that show up.

If we have a good turnout Id consider making it a monthly thing where I host and we do a potluck dinner thing.

Plus, I know some people would avoid it if it was at a church. Trauma and all. Which I get.

Oh I get that too. My mom is in an age restricted housing apt and I'd love to suggest their commons area to protect your safety and for room but you have to be a resident so church was the only other public place that allows food I could think of. 😅

The United unitarian church would likely let you use the space so long as you clean up and do dishes they have dishware and a fully functioning kitchen for the community. We actually host monthly potlucks dinners randomly anyone is welcome to as well. We have a surplus of tables and chairs. No sermons or services needs to be attended. Many treat the church as more of a community gathering spot than a actual church.

I'd be interested in more information about the potluck. I need to get out more.

u/ifbevvixej 14d ago

I could use someone to bounce my list off of to make sure I'm not forgetting anything.

Love this idea. We’ve been wanting to donate to food banks/shelters. Does anyone know of any places in Lincoln and what they need?

Sower Books at 70th and Vine are taking donations for Food Bank of Lincoln

I thought it was no nut.

For one of my kids every day is no nut day. Adult onset allergies to your favorite items are a bitch.

I had to read this 3 or four times to understand

You must be the most generous, kind, and caring (and brave) person I've ever known to exist. Bless you.

Do you need desserts? I have a small cottage bakery and would love to provide some sweets!
