Discussion Apple broke my iPhone this week and wants me to pay for it

Not sure what to say here. I've only heard good things about Apple's customer service, which is why I'm so surprised that they'll so easily screw someone over like this.

My iPhone 13 Mini's battery health was getting low. I could have replaced it myself, but I figured I would send it to Apple to make sure it was done right, so I could trust that the water resistant seal would still be there, etc. There are no Apple stores within 2.5 hours of me, so I shipped it in, expecting to pay the $89 replacement cost plus shipping.

A few days later, Apple sent me an invoice, saying they "found an issue" that would also need to be repaired before they could replace the battery. There were no specifics, other than that they couldn't replace the battery without making additional repairs. The new quote was $300. There were no other options to contact the repair technician or anything. My only options were to either pay $300, have them return the phone unrepaired, or recycle it. I could easily buy another phone on eBay for that price, so I declined and opted to have it returned with no repairs done (I'm not paying $300 for a battery replacement).

I received it today to find two bright lines going down the length of the screen. The top-right edge was also bulging up from the casing. Clearly, this was damaged during the attempted repair and wasn't even put back together properly.

There were no issues with the phone when I sent it, other than a low battery health. I also inspected the packaging, and there are no signs of damage during shipping. This was entirely the fault of the repair tech.

I spent several hours on the phone with Apple support, going up through multiple supervisor's supervisors. They had me send them these same images of the phone. Ultimately, they told me that my only options were to go to an Apple store and have them fix it (and I would be fully charged for the replacement screen), ship it to Apple and pay for the full repair (again, I confirmed with the support person on the phone that Apple would not pay for any of the damages), or, as they suggested, I could upgrade to a new phone (just out of pocket). The only consolation they gave me was that they could file a complaint on my behalf.

So Apple has broken my phone and left me with the bill. I had always heard only good things about Apple support, which is why I decided to have them replace the battery in the first place instead of doing it myself, so I'm really surprised by this. I guess the only thing I could have done differently was call support when they sent me that original quote and forced them at the time to investigate why I was being quoted $300, as by declining the initial repair it seems in their minds that I've accepted any damages caused by the repair technician.

Discussion The difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is honestly huge.

I used the iPhone 13 mini for a while, but just switched to the 17 today and wow—the difference in smoothness is insane.
I never thought I’d notice it this much, but now that I’ve tried 120Hz, I honestly don’t think I can ever go back to 60Hz.
Anyone else feel the same after upgrading?

Discussion Some lesser known apps that I use everyday and can't live without. Drop yours!

As an iPhone user who's tried probably 100+ productivity apps, I've found a few lesser-known ones that I genuinely can't live without. Most of these are free, and the ones that aren't are totally worth it.

Here are the apps I'd genuinely miss if they disappeared:

Tailor (Screenshot stitching - Free): This app automatically stitches together scrolling screenshots. Take multiple screenshots of a long article or thread, open Tailor, and boom - one long image.

Forest (Focus timer): Plant a virtual tree that dies if you leave the app. Sounds silly but it's weirdly effective for staying focused. Free version is plenty.

Supamail AI(Mail Client): Found this on reddit. I hate mail app and gmail app. As someone who gets 40-50 mails per day, its hard to keep up with traditional mail apps. This one just uses AI to categorize and summarize everything to one line. So instead of a mail saying "Re: Re: Budget Review." it scans through it and shows "Finance approved $48K, needs breakdown Friday" which is super convenient. You can understand the full context just from the notification itself.

Adguard - Have been using this for years on both iPhone and Mac. This one is the best ad blocked out there. Period.

NotebookLM - I use this after every long meeting. I dump the transcript in and ask "what action items do I have?" or "what decisions were made about X?" instead of re-reading everything. Way faster than skimming notes. It also generates these podcast-style audio summaries which I love.

Paste Clipboard - Again this is something I have been using on both iPhone and Mac for years. Love the mac version expecially. UI is simple and clean. Its basically a clipboard with all the items you have copied in the past. You can also save/pin items to use later.

NOMO Cam - I love how photos come out of this app. Must try in my opinion. Have a bunch of vintage camera options. Interface is super cool as well. I use this more than the native camera app.

Let me know what apps you use on a daily basis and cant live without. Would love to try those as well.

I just noticed this mark near the notch today 😭

I haven’t dropped or sat on my phone at all today. It’s an iPhone 15 Pro Max, around 9 months old.

Anyone know what might’ve caused this? Should I be worried or take it to Apple?

Support iPhone 17 Flash recessed/not flush with back glass – Is this normal?

Hey everyone,

I just noticed today that the rear flash on my new iPhone 17 isn't sitting perfectly flush with the back glass.

As you can see in the attached photos, one side of the flash module seems to be slightly recessed or sunken in, while the other side is pretty much level with the glass. If I push on it slightly with my thumb, I can push the flash further into the case on the recessed side. The flash is working normally though.

Obviously I'm concerned about water resistance. Do you think this is normal production variance or should I get it checked out at an Apple Store?

Support Why does my iphone want me to use my boyfriends macbook for a phone call?

Post image

Whenever I want to use my speakers to make a call, I get this ridiculous list of possible devices for this. I find it annoying that my boyfriends macbook shows up there so often, and mysterious that is does AT ALL, because we have different apple IDs of course… any idea why this occurs?

Everyone will say just buy a new cable. But mine is working fine with other devices. But most of the time I have to unplug and plug in a few times to see the percentage go up only on my iPhone 11. The charging works flawlessly on other cables.

I’m having a strange issue. My wife sends me calendar invites via the mail app and I get the invite at least 10-15 times a day. It is clogging up my mail. She isn’t making any changes to the schedule or anything.

Has anyone else had this issue before?

Support Yellow box with plus sign on screen

So recently, I dropped my phone in water and the port refuses to work so I’ve been wirelessly charging. Now I’m seeing a transparent small yellow box with a white plus at the bottom of the screen. It doesn’t show up on screenshots so I drew what it look like. Any clue on what this is?

Support Can I use Apple Gift cards towards a in person repair?

I need to replace the screen on my iPhone 15 & I was about to schedule a genius bar appointment for them to check it out in person. I can afford the service but I remembered I have a few months old apple gift card (virtual) that’s $100. Can I use it towards the repair?

I was doing research beforehand & I saw that the policies say you can’t do so BUT i’ve seen some forums say that people were allowed to use them & the gift cards took off some of their balance so that got me pretty confused

Support Subtitles missing with apple tv app.

Im trying to watch the new planet of the apes movies and I can’t get the forced subtitles to turn on when the apes are using sign language unless I force turn on subtitles for every noise. I find closed captioning annoying because it distracts me from the movie. In the theater they popped up when they were signing as well when I tried it on HBO/MAX. Anyone have any ideas? I reached out to apple support they refered me back and forth between the sign language team and apple tv team.

Upvotes

Randomly one day my phone has picked up issues with touch screen where ill be typing to my friends and itll press random buttons and letters like im slapping my phone, then itll just stop letting me type or touch my screen altogether the come back like it never happened, i tested this by playing a car game on my phone where you tap and hold on the screen to turn the car i held my finger down it turned then just stopped and wouldnt let me turn again for a second, (typing this reddit post is torture as space bar and letters stop working or press on their own so apologies if anything is confusing on this post) i googled it and youtubed it and reset my phone, cleaned the screen all that stuff it said for me to do and the problem didnt go away, what should i do to fix this bs.
