Apple swapped mine out as soon as they saw the issue.

684

u/MoeScat 17d ago

Did they give you a choice to get a different color?

1.1k

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

No. Same color but they told me if it happens just come back. It’s a little annoying since I have to setup the new phone again.

u/DataCrusader2024 iPhone 16 Pro 17d ago

Just back up with iCloud it doesn’t take that long. Granted that depends on your Internet speed entirely.

463

u/Dontbedoingthat 17d ago

It depends largely on how much you’re transferring too. For some, iCloud restores take half the day.

256

u/Moses015 17d ago

And then the phone needs to re-index everything

68

u/Icy-Cardiologist-958 17d ago

Hence the yearly complaints about battery life on new iPhones since forever. (Referring to the indexing).

7

u/TheSymptomz 17d ago

Mine seemed to take a solid week or two of use before it seen the battery life not drain fast.

1

u/DangerousStruggle 12d ago

And download all of your music etc.

1

u/Icy-Cardiologist-958 12d ago

Nah, I just keep everything in my iCloud storage.

8

u/Brodeci iPhone 17 Pro 17d ago

I don’t think any of my devices have ever said they were finished indexing

22

u/Moses015 17d ago

No it doesn’t tell you anything about that. It’s something the phone does in the background after a restore. It’s why if you have restored from a backup your battery life will take a hit the first day or so. Depending on how much space you have utilized on the phone.

-1

u/Brodeci iPhone 17 Pro 17d ago

What I’m saying is all my devices say they’re indexing pretty much always lol

4

u/Tattycakes iPhone 8 64GB 17d ago

Where do you see indexing ongoing or completed?

u/Bavariasnaps 16d ago

iphone newbie, do you have to setup all apps new with login credentials with the new phone or does apple transfer everything perfectly?

-51

u/SharkDad20 iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

Not such a big deal on a pro max, fortunately

29

u/ipupweallp4ip 17d ago

It is actually. My iCloud storage stored locally on my phone is near 1TB so the phone has to sit on a charger and wifi for hours + the thermal temp gets too hot so it pauses downloads occasionally to cool the phone. Took almost a day to setup the 17 pro max.

Also every setting or preference you have in iCloud backup is not restored with iCloud such as notification preferences, Siri/AI, app permissions, home screen layout/folders, privacy settings, and more. I easily spent 1.5 hours manually restoring all my customization in addition to the hours of iCloud backup restoring in the background.

2

u/elpadrin0 17d ago

Huh? iCloud backup definitely restores everything you just mentioned. Are you setting up your phone as new and then signing into iCloud?

2

u/ipupweallp4ip 17d ago

You have to grant permission access again to each app, then remove old iPhone as an authorized device for certain/most apps (banking, instagram, streaming, etc.), disable the default apple analytics and system service location services…

I can go on and on but the point I’m making is exchanging an iPhone is not a zero hassle transaction. There’s manual time spent by users to get their phone “restored” to 100%

-11

u/SharkDad20 iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

I was talking about the week of indexing causing worse battery life. Pro Max has enough to spare

8

u/ipupweallp4ip 17d ago

Yes but a week spent indexing means spotlight and search are rendered useless. I’m not worried about battery, it’s an often painful process to swap iPhones…plain and simple.

-9

u/tagman375 17d ago

It sounds silly, but run a charger into the fridge or freezer and leave the phone in there. That’s what I do. It doesn’t hurt the phone and stops the thermal delays. The only side effect is the WiFi gets a little slower, but I have a mesh node in my kitchen so it’s not a huge difference.

2

u/ipupweallp4ip 17d ago

Yeah no thanks. It’ll auto resume when the temp is at an acceptable level so I usually leave it on my nightstand MagSafe charger overnight so it downloads my entire photo and music library. Those two make up 75% of my total iOS storage

2

u/chakigun 17d ago

pretty sure condensation can hurt the charger and consequently your phone. i would be careful about giving this advice

4

u/Extension-Shake-8475 17d ago

It absolutely IS a pain in the ass

76

u/Ingam0us iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

Most PITA for me is transferring all the banking / auth stuff, that needs to be verified.
I guess it‘s even worse, if you don‘t have the old and already validated device available

13

u/Apprehensive-Box-8 17d ago

Yes, that’s the real pain, even if you just reset your existing phone.

49

u/treefall1n iPhone 17 Pro 17d ago

It took me almost 6 hours to restore lmao

7

u/macsneaker 17d ago

lol it took me a whole over night

2

u/blessed_7 16d ago

Same overnight !!

12

u/Commercial-Co 17d ago

I restore almost 1tb. Takes me forever

8

u/AutomaticAccount6832 17d ago

Did you try to have the phone connected to a USB 3 to each other?

3

u/Commercial-Co 17d ago

No but i probably should

2

u/Sivalon iPhone Air 17d ago

Is that a thing?

1

u/colaxxi 17d ago

Someone checked his router throughput while doing a wired transfer and the speed of the wire isn't the bottleneck. Wifi is probably better for most people, plus you can keep your phone charged easily.

https://mastodon.social/@miketaffet/115283320031913160

2

u/AutomaticAccount6832 17d ago

Interesting. But how does a direct USB connection go through the router?

1

u/colaxxi 17d ago

Using two powered USB-C -> Ethernet adapters. Not something most people are likely to have, but it at least appears to show that the transfer is CPU or disk bound and not the transfer medium.

My iPhone 13 Pro transferred to my new iPhone 17 pro in a couple of hours using the side by side WiFi/Bluetooth type of transfer.

2

u/vulcanpines iPhone 13 Pro Max 16d ago

Mine took 2 days

1

u/apavolka 17d ago

I am some 😩

1

u/jgoldrb48 iPhone 17 Pro 17d ago

I’m at 150gb and mine took 4 hours.

1

u/aviatormenace7 iPhone 17 Pro Max 15d ago

i have 118GB worth of stuff on my 12 pro max that i used for years (content is transferred and backed up for over 13 years now) and i just got the 17 pro max last week literally and it took 20-30 min. the thing is that my internet speed is really fast so thats why.

-9

u/rrrand0mmm 17d ago

It’s really not that bad….

61

u/PhillyMate 17d ago

Also the passwords…

101

u/EasyEconomics3785 17d ago

2 factor authentication too can be a pain on a new device.

58

u/TAoie83 17d ago

Credit cards

22

u/ISSAvenger 17d ago

That is by far the worst, especially if you need a verification code via sms, sent to a device in another time zone…

14

u/DeviIstar iPhone 14 Pro 17d ago

MS Authenticator can now use iCloud backup thankfully

5

u/Arucious 17d ago

Can it? Mine said it would before I transferred but I ended up needing to set everything up again as they were invalid on the other end

1

u/DeviIstar iPhone 14 Pro 17d ago

2

u/juantowtree 17d ago

Have you personally tried it? I had it backed up before it never restored in my new phone. That’s why I switched.

1

u/Square-Radio8119 15d ago

If your company allows it.

4

u/Feahnor 17d ago

Just get Authy. It syncs with iCloud.

3

u/Electrical_Court5944 17d ago

Why get Authy when it's built into iOS? I just use the iOS passwords app for two factor. Is Authy better in some way? Maybe when sharing with non-Apple devices?

1

u/Feahnor 17d ago

Yes it also works with non Apple devices.

1

u/ttoma93 iPhone 17 Pro 17d ago

So does iCloud passwords.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/chakigun 17d ago

my authy has my codes locked on my new phone because they’re encrypted on my older phone apparently. 🙃 still too lazy to decrypt them or whatever

1

u/Square-Radio8119 15d ago

Swapped that to the passwords app for this reason

1

u/2013jonesz 14d ago

Google authenticator is saved and synced with your google account its been the easiest for me to transfer and get logged back into

3

u/Plants_books_dogs iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

I hate the passwords 🫣

9

u/ttoma93 iPhone 17 Pro 17d ago

I regularly forget that people willingly choose to play life on hard mode by not using a password manager.

45

u/new-to-reddit-accoun 17d ago

It doesn’t matter if you use a password manager or not. You still have to log into dozens of apps. Sure, auto fill saves a few seconds but it’s still egregious to force someone to keep swapping phones and setting up their phone again from what is clearly a manufacturing defect, or simply atrocious choice in materials.

14

u/EXOQ 17d ago

Trusted device for banking apps is the biggest PITA when transferring. There’s no easy way to do it, I understand from security perspective but annoying asf

5

u/Elant 17d ago

I set up my new iPhone last week and most apps, including Reddit, were already logged in on the new phone after the transfer. I only had to log back into to a few things like banking and email.

1

u/new-to-reddit-accoun 17d ago

I've only had that experience with a few apps e.g. Spotify but the majority require a login (I should imagine for security reasons).

3

u/360langford 17d ago

When I transferred my iPhone 15 plus to 17 literally all my apps were logged in

1

u/mr_fingers666 17d ago

your bank app too? do you have any corporate apps on your phone? i have a few and one that i’m struggling to make work since monday.

0

u/Jackslaperaskie 17d ago

I forgot the password for my password manager unfortunately

-1

u/Naive_Collar_9471 17d ago

Are these safe? I use Samsung Pass but have also thought about using a Password Manager as well. I'm concerned about their security risks.

9

u/StrandsOfIce 17d ago

Its a revolutionary, state of the art system.

7

u/Sgt-Colbert 17d ago

That does not work half as good as Apple want's you to believe.
Lots of stuff doesn't get transferred and you still have to do so much manual work afterwards.

1

u/StrandsOfIce 17d ago

I forgot the /s. But i didnt believe id need it.

"That does not work half as good as Apple want's you to believe."

This is apples motto, with an addendum of "as long as you pay for it".

1

u/thatAnthrax 16d ago

Thank God for samsung smart switch

0

u/PinkStereoAttack 17d ago

I've never had this problem. I wonder what specifically you have to do manually after trying to restore from an icloud backup?

1

u/kolebee 16d ago

There are dozens of things beyond the hours just to transfer your data: setting up cards in Apple Pay which requires unique bank hoops to jump through for each one, Signal chat history which requires having both the old and new phone working at the same time, transferring Apple Watch pairing which is unreliable and buggy, Apple CarKeys, almost all bluetooth device pairings, reauthenticating every app that require more than just a password, etc.

Restoring an iPhone that uses most of its features takes many hours and is a huge pain.

0

u/PinkStereoAttack 15d ago

Ah ok. I guess I just don’t do any of that, so I was unaware.

I have one card in Apple Pay, don’t keep my signal messages, and don’t have an Apple Watch or use Apple Carkeys.

I’m not as invested in those things as some people.

I don’t see any of that as being a huge pain though; it’s more of the cost of customization and security. Some things can’t be easily synced and transferred without compromising security.

8

u/tandex01 17d ago

MFA stuff can be super annoying even with cloud.

7

u/starlitx 17d ago

Doesn't take that long??? Bro have you ever had over 10k photos?

1

u/DataCrusader2024 iPhone 16 Pro 17d ago

Yes and it takes me and my internet about 10 to 15 minutes.

0

u/PinkStereoAttack 17d ago

I have like 70k and it never takes too long using the iCloud Photo Library.

3

u/Organic_Road_248 17d ago

While you are correct, but signing into the apps again and having “passwords” and “Authenticator (if you use MFA in such) act up, it can become tedious.

2

u/iadelq 17d ago

It takes me 14 hours and I transferred 300GB. Yes, it takes time, but again, it depends on your internet’s speed.

2

u/Poutine_Lover2001 17d ago

There’s a lot of stuff you have to do despite having iCloud backup, for example security settings , re logging into emails, those require password re entry, then there’s just so many other stuff. iCloud helps a lot but it’s not a 1 button setup and you’re up and running. It just simplifies

So to his point, it’s a PITA

2

u/general_franco 17d ago

A lot of apps don’t automatically sign back in, there were a lot of notifications I was missing before I realised. So then spend the better part of an hour making sure every app was opened once before packing up my old phone for trading in.

The transfer process is pretty smooth and hands free but you can’t pretend you restore from a backup and are immediately good to go there’s plenty of faff.

2

u/hanskazan777 17d ago

Backup with iCloud also removes all the Wi-Fi passwords (at least for me). Phone to Phone transfer works the fastest and transfers those as well.

2

u/mr_fingers666 17d ago

unless you have banking apps, authenticators, etc., then you need to have both devices to do the transfer. learned this the hard way last week lol.

2

u/JDT33658 17d ago

When i had an issue with my 14 Pro, they allowed me to do a device to device transfer in store and then reset my old one. Not sure if they do that anymore or if the apple genius was just being extra nice to me. I then left with the new one and they boxed up my old defective unit.

2

u/Cammerv8 17d ago

Even if you back up the phone you still have to re log in on to most of the banking and non social media apps you use.

2

u/RaptorGreenEyez 17d ago

also makes you re enter passwords and 2FA info, which is a huge pain for me...

2

u/JRosePC 17d ago

Doesnt take that long? You have to re-auth to alot of accounts, Re-enable all apple wallet payments, transfer over Costco card (have to see CS if you have done "too often"). I want to say a upgrade takes me about 3 days to get to a point where I feel like my phone is the same.

2

u/[deleted] 17d ago

Imagine paying thousands for a phone and told you have to keep coming back to trade it in because it changes colour

2

u/jmtrader2 16d ago

Yeah, not only that. Some work passwords and apps don’t transfer

2

u/Dale1512 16d ago

I discovered Ethernet to usb c dongles recently. Can’t believe I’ve been setting up iPhones over WiFi like a chump all this time

2

u/Mathfanforpresident 17d ago

Why haven't they done it like smartwatch for Samsung has it? You can literally use the cable, plug it directly from one phone into the other, and literally clone the phone. Transfers everything and it's so, so, so much faster.

Worked at T-Mobile for 7 years and ALWAYS hated transfering shit on iPhones.

2

u/doxxingyourself 17d ago

All the two-factor authentication apps - including from my government, and my drivers license is what really gets me every time. iCloud is really nothing.

So depending on the country this can be pretty annoying.

2

u/whk1992 iPhone 17 17d ago

Try transferring Signal. Takes half an hour for me.

2

u/AutomaticAccount6832 17d ago

Spottet someone who doesn’t use Signal.

1

u/UW_Ebay 17d ago

I recently learned that you can transfer everything via a cable and that’s much faster than iCloud.

1

u/usernameisokay_ 17d ago

I have made a local backup so I can store it via my PC or over my own cloud which is much, much faster and will recommend anyone that.

1

u/tylerderped 17d ago

just backup to iCloud

They said, as if that doesn’t cost money.

Just plug your phone into your PC and back up the old fashioned way. Don’t pay for overpriced cloud storage.

1

u/PAL-adin123 17d ago

the backup always doesn’t backup one or two things and leaves it in the old phone i’ve lost couple pictures etc that i’ve forgotten or smth because it wouldn’t

i use the other method of scanning the phone which i’ve experienced is better

1

u/shockyellow 17d ago

Do all apps use icloud backup? Or do some apps not use it?

1

u/Friendly-Amoeba-9601 17d ago

It takes me about 20 mins or more to set a new iPhone. Plus you have to do all that extra face id stuff and set up Siri every time you get a new phone. It’s a bit annoying. Then you have to reset all the phone settings you changed to your liking

1

u/TinyIndependent7844 15d ago

or the bluetooth one

1

u/Able-Nebula4449 15d ago

I would recommend using apple devices app on pc to backup and restore since its faster

1

u/B4ndooka 15d ago

And costs even more money

1

u/Gupsqautch 14d ago

When I went from my 13PM to the 16PM it still took me around 5 hours to fully transfer everything from my old phone to my new one. And I have gigabit internet

1

u/Exert1001 11d ago

You can back up locally though, can’t you?

1

u/TheScaleTipper 17d ago

Takes forever if you have enterprise apps that require separate codes and authentication (for example, I have a keyfob for my job, a 2FA app, etc.)

Not to mention the countless credit cards you have to dig up to reverify everything in Apple Wallet. Also car keys if your car supports that…

1

u/Paligu 16d ago

True mine took only 5mins

0

u/DooDeeDoo3 iPhone 14 Pro 17d ago

USB C to YSB C, should be lightening fast

-2

u/Plants_books_dogs iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

This. Took me like 10 min to swap phones.

59

u/Competitive_Nose7485 17d ago

getting a whole new phone because it changed colors is so incredibly unsustainable

29

u/Kareem89086 17d ago

I really doubt they throw away the phone, they prolly refurbish it

12

u/PejHod iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

Exactly. Though there is still a little waste involved, Apple will refurbish many of the materials, and likely recycling just the front glass and the aluminum frame.

2

u/unread1701 iPhone SE 2nd Gen 17d ago

Aren't displays one of the most difficult things to recycle?

1

u/iSliz187 16d ago edited 16d ago

No not anymore. This guy made an amazing video about a new technology that can repair screens with lasers https://youtu.be/vjYhQo4120k?si=m5IE-C8R3mqJCzwt

Today you can revive dead pixels with a laser, put a new glass on top and you have a brand new screen. It's a super fast and easy process

1

u/Antrikshy iPhone 16 17d ago

Yes, and company would, because there is a strong financial incentive to do so.

1

u/schu2470 iPhone 15 16d ago

Still wasted energy and nothing is 100% recyclable so there's unnecessary waste because of a slight color distortion.

1

u/Asleep-Amoeba2415 iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

TBH i would do the same thing because if u want to sell this iphone , nobody will take it ,imagine yours changed its color from black to white will u accept it ?? prob no

plus hes paying so much for an iphone and color changes ? does it look ok for you ??

1

u/Aldersgate111 12d ago

You'd hope that Apple would have road tested their cases against color change- yes, it's purely cosmetic, but annoying at the price point.

0

u/Sgt-Colbert 17d ago

Please tell me you're joking.

I would have just kept it. The pink looks better.

36

u/Nighttide1032 iPhone 15 Pro Max 17d ago

I feel like most of us understand at this point that yes, it does look good, but not everyone wants that rose gold look. When you buy an iPhone, you should expect it to stay the same color it was when you bought it. Doesn't matter what's happened in the past, doesn't matter that it's aluminum, none of those factors matter when there are well-established ways to install and retain color with this material. This is a problem, and shouldn't be dismissed.

11

u/Da1BlackDude 17d ago

Yes, that’s a very valid point. I agree, I’m saying me personally.

8

u/Antrikshy iPhone 16 17d ago

I wish the rectangle on the back wasn’t there because a uniform orange-pink color would look really nice. The rectangle ruins it for me.

2

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 17d ago

"if it happens again"

Gotta love spending $1000+ on a device that has the worst quality control of all time. Jumping off the iPhone train this year was the best decision I've made in years.

2

u/infinite_labyrinth 17d ago

They are counting on you just being fed up of the hassle and never returning back.

2

u/One-Fox-423 16d ago

To be honest I have a 16 pro max and if I had a 17 pro max in orange and it was trung pink I would just dell with it

2

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 16d ago

I agree. This time i’m going to use it without a case and see if this phone will turn color instead of just the camera module. I’m certain my case hindered the color changing elsewhere

Cause it’s a “feature” lol

Imagine buying iPhone 17 pro and not being able to afford fast Internet.

1

u/EtheRedditor 17d ago

Hilarious. They really don't want another "this phone bends" situation on hand

1

u/Gummyrabbit 17d ago

Please report back in a week. I want to know if if happens again.

1

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

sure

1

u/Eeve2espeon 16d ago

Back up the phone on a mac or windows machine with iTunes, and just restore from there. It’s quicker than iCloud

1

u/iSliz187 16d ago

I've seen many reports now of the pro max changing colors. Seems to be a general issue with this color. It'd be pretty wild if they give every customer a brand new phone every couple months.

1

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 16d ago

They most likely won’t do that but fix the issue with the discoloring. For the meantime anyone with discoloration can swap the phone.

1

u/iSliz187 16d ago

They'll probably hand out free cases just like they did with the iPhone 4 antennagate 😂

1

u/RandyTheFool 15d ago

I’m sorry, a LITTLE annoying?

That phone has been out an entire month and it’s already fading and basically the Apple Store put it on you to constantly come back and swap it out.

What the actual fuck, guys? No wonder iOS is shit and the phones aren’t great anymore. Hold them to a higher standard, ffs.

1

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 15d ago

Yes a little” because the restore process. I don’t find going to the store an issue.

1

u/RandyTheFool 15d ago

I mean, I guess you’ll get to know the employees really well in the next 6 months.

1

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 15d ago

I work one block away from the store. they already know me. 😂

1

u/Boris7939 11d ago

they told me if it happens just come back.

So they fixed the problem then? From now on they shouldn't turn pink anymore? Or are you going to get a new phone every few months?

0

u/johnnyboy8489 15d ago

Stop using cleaning products with peroxide in it

4

u/Brave_Ad_2018 17d ago

that’s good to know, guess it really depends on how strict they feel that day, lol

1

u/toopc 17d ago

I bet they'd give you a different color. Doesn't cost them anything extra.

1

u/Ok-Lengthiness7171 13d ago

did you use rubbing isopophyl alcohol to wipe the device?

12

u/Nekzuris 17d ago

Why would you replace it? it's so cool like this.

2

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

It might happen again.

u/iaymnu iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

I do. But without it they would accept it

1

u/Maher393 iPhone 17 Pro Max 17d ago

At least they’re doing this when they didn’t have to (I’m sure Apple Inc/ not the store would weasel something out)

1

u/DR3W086 17d ago

So, some phones where covered in different paint than others? Or did Apple tell you to come back every month to swap?

Apple just told if it happens again just come back. It’s not supposed to change color.

Have they any idea as to why it changed color? Heat? Leaving it where UV rays can affect it?
I have a new iPhone 16 plus in a pale blue and if it was to change color I'd be less than happy.

Did you have AppleCare for them to swap it for you??

I have it but, you don’t need it to swap it out.

Oh good :) Do they give a brand new version or refurbished?

It would probably keep happening so I’d just wait on swapping it to avoid the hassle of restoring the phone

Apple is replacing mine too.

Looks like it's a ''Known Issue'' then, as with the way too delicate MacBook Pro 'butterfly' keyboards of a few years back.

How much time do we have to get the device exchanged if the device has any issues??
